My wife and I ate here this week and would like to know if you hired a new chef? The food that we normally order every other time has gone downhill. The main course entrees were mediocre but the worst was the desserts. The Creme Brulee tasted like vanilla pudding and the top that is normally crusted nicely wasn't. The cheesecake was crumbly and sunken in and had no taste whatsoever. My mistake was not buying your cookies which are usually out of this world. This is constructive criticism and unfortunately probably will not return. Still upset spending $70.00 with tip on this meal. read more

We loved our lunch! We had the garlic beef sandwich, the veggie sandwich, the grilled shrimp salad, and the fish taco bowl. All were excellent. Pleasant modern decor and funny signs hanging in the bathroom. The restaurant was surprisingly full for a random Thursday afternoon. This was my first visit but I know Ami from The Vintage Cafe in Milton. The veggie slaw was great and the roasted vegetable sandwich was also very good. Bill had the fried fish sandwich (Mahi) and loved it. Great location on Rt. 16 in Milton with easy access and lots of parking. This will be a frequent place for us. Everything was incredible, what a treat! Our party got a mixture of brunch items, including avocado fries (mwah!), a cinnamon bun, egg sandwiches, potatoes and gravy (The Dude, to be exact), and a crab cake. The food was delicious AND interesting, and they had a great selection of beers and drinks to pair with it. My dad said his crab cake was a bit salty, taking it out of competition for top crab cake on this trip, but good nonetheless. I also loved the atmosphere. We come here every year for vacation. A nice little family oriented restaurant. They have a small menu that covers most varieties. The kids menu is small but has the standard Mac n cheese (amazing), chicken tenders (fried or grilled), quesadilla and a burger. The only downside is the lack of high chairs. No fault of the restaurant. It is small and I wouldn't expect them to carry more than three. They have a nice area outdoors for dining as well. When it gets packed, the service slows down a bit due to bar tending duties. The staff is super friendly. If you come to Milton, check this place out! read more

Had such amazing dinner here! From start to finish it was such an awesome meal. I am down in the area vacationing with my family and we decided to stop in for a bite to eat. There was no wait at all and our food was prepared very quickly. We started with chips and guacamole and avocado fries, both were fantastic. For the main course I had the bbq chicken which was so delicious and flavorful, with zucchini and slaw. My meal was the best thing I ate on the whole vacation (and we ate a lot). I stole a few fries from my family members and they were out of this world! The portion sizes here are quite large considering how reasonable their prices were. The wait staff was attentive and very nice! I will absolutely be back next time I am in the area. read more

I ate at the Backyard for the first time right after they opened, I have been there two more times since then, each time for dinner. The food was excellent, I really like the menu options. I had a difficult time picking meals each time, even though I got something different every time. Waitress seemed new the first time I went, but the service was still great. I thoroughly enjoyed the set-up inside the restaurant and the overall atmosphere. I look forward to outside seating when it gets a little warmer. Nice addition to the restaurant scene! read more

We stopped in for an early dinner. The restaurant is charming and well-decorated...looks like it would be a great place to eat, but the food is mediocre at best. My husband had the bbq chicken plate, which was nothing special. Just dry baked chicken with bbq sauce, barely dressed slaw, and okay beans. I had the pressed Italian, which was just cold cuts and balsamic, again, nothing special. Some reviewers have suggested this is a great locals spot, and I would agree. This is a quaint place. The food is really good, but the service could use some improvement. As appetizers we had the goat cheese fritters and calamari..I was very sad when the cheese fritters were gone. This is a must try! The jam they served with it was a nice compliment. Dinner was the pork chop with gouda grits...yum! I had the steak salad. This was ok, streak was good, but the salad was on the plain side. This is were the service came in. Nobody saw the empty glass in front of me because nobody came back to check on us after the meal was delivered. We would have gotten dessert, but waited too long to see the server...I do believe I will return in hopes that the service is better at anticipating the needs of the customer as the food was really good. read more

We were staying in Dewey Beach for a long Easter Weekend and stopped by to see a friend who has an auto shop in Milton and noticed The Backyard and decided to stop in for lunch. First off, the decor is perfect for the area, welcoming with subtle beach undertones. The staff is all incredibly nice and they all work together to make the guest's experience wonderful from start to finish. Our server was Nicole and she went above and beyond, checking back on us multiple times to make sure we were happy and to see if we needed anything (the polar opposite of the server we had elsewhere on Easter). Hubby and I weren't terribly hungry so we shared The Dip Sandwich and the roast beef was both tender and very flavorful (I'm a salt-a-holic and I never touched the shaker). We also got a side salad which was filled with fresh vegetables and the ranch dressing was to die for and also a side order of Mac and Cheese which hubby snacked on for the rest of the day back at the hotel was creamy and yummy, even after reheating it was the same as when we were served it in the restaurant. The little bowls they serve the sides in are quite deceiving because they certainly hold large portions. There's a small bar and outside seating area with games for the kids which we'll be sure to take advantage of when we head back down in 2 weeks. We stopped by 2 days later to pick up a muffin and some cookies for a friend who was celebrating her birthday and they were not only the best cookies and muffins I have ever had but an awesome deal. I got the Coconut Key Lime and it melted in my mouth. We loved everything about this place and hope to enjoy dinner next time. It may be a little bit off the beaten path if you're staying at the beach but trust me, it is well worth the drive (about 20 minutes from Rehoboth). And be sure to ask for Nicole, she has personality plus and really takes care of her customers, one of the best servers I have ever had. read more

This place was great! I was travelling and staying here on the Eastern Shore in Delaware, and as it turns out, there isn't a lot of restaurant activity in the Broadkill area. I stumbled on this place while looking for something else, and I went twice that weekend. Neither time was I disappointed. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious and made with love. What a find! This modern diner is perfectly situated on the long ride to the Delaware beaches, and it's open early for breakfast. The food is fantastic here! Real potatoes, huge omelets, fresh jams, and good coffee. There isn't much more to ask for in a breakfast joint that's adjacent to a farm. The Backyard is one of those places I went to solely based on Yelp reviews. This restaurant is flanked by a low end diner, a car wash, a laundry mat, and a dollar store. The surrounding residential area is mostly low income. So I never sought out The Backyard based on its location. The Backyard seems to cater to the implant demographic of Milton, tourists, and higher end restaurant goers. While not truly high end, The Backyard is a little pricey for the middle class and low income residents of Milton. While on the higher end of pricing though, The Backyard is worth every penny when it comes to quality and quantity. The food is absolutely fantastic. The meat is high quality, the vegetables are fresh, and the recipe combinations make fantastic flavors. We ordered a crab fries which had a fantastic cheese sauce poured on the fries. I had a steak salad which was affordable on the cheaper end but filling and absolutely fabulous flavors. The wife had a steak and shrimp which came with a huge, grade A, portion of steak and good shrimp. The Backyard both excels and suffers from service and presentation. The restaurant is nicely done on the inside with comfortable chairs and a relaxing atmosphere. The service is fast, friendly, and engaging. But if I were to nitpick this is where I would do it. I ordered a craft beer and it was served in a bottle. I understand there is a portion of the craft beer elites that believes in the quality of the labels. But high quality beer needs to be served in a glass for full aroma and flavor to surface. They have a full bar so I had no problem getting a glass, but in such a nice restaurant serving a craft beer like it was a Coors was a little low class. Also, the crab meat in the crab fries was refrigerator cold when served which gave it a negative contrast to the hot fries. The crab was also covered in way too much old bay which took away from the taste. Fortunately the fries were good enough on their own to compensate, but it's such a waste of crab meat. Lastly, my wife's steak was served with a huge piece of fat attached. The steak itself was so large the their was more than enough served. But the fat could have been cut off in preparation before the food when out. In the end I don't think The Backyard is something that we're going to add to our monthly rotation. After we left I went across the street to the liquor store where I could have gotten a $13 6-pack of that $6 bottle of craft beer. The Backyard certainly fills a niche for the area but there are better high end restaurants just down the road in Rehoboth which are slightly nicer and even a bit cheaper. I am willing to return to The Backyard during the off-season to see if they cater more to the farm community base or if they hold out and stay the same. read more

Such a perfect place!! So happy we came off route 1 to have lunch here. The decor is so cute, there's a little bar with a great wine list and beers on tap. Theres also an outside courtyard for dining in the sun on a nice day. We got sandwiches: the garden box and a blackened chicken sandwich. Both were amazing. The sweet potato waffle fries are maybe the best we've ever tasted! The bakery boasted a great selection of cookies and muffins, we got some to go, and those did not disappoint either.
