This was my favorite Bagel Bakery in the 831 (there's one in Sand City, Monterey and Salinas too) but the other day my Mom picked up a bag of bagels and some spread. She was handed a 4oz container of what looked like the Walnut Cream Cheese (Date & Walnut I think it is, semi sweet kind of odd but good on a plain or savory bagel... I think). I love cream cheese and I was too impatient to cut it properly and spread the creamy love so instead I ripped a nice small chunk out of my plain bagel and I topped it like it was whipped cream on a sundae... I went ape shit and took a nice bite. NOT LOVELY. The cream cheese must have been left out for a while and placed back where customers could purchase it, it was borderline rancid and it tasted like yeasty Camembert (which is a cross between blue cheese and brie). I dropped it and thought I had lost my senses. I took a whiff of the container (as did my Mom and sisters) and sure enough it didn't smell like cream cheese or have the nice nose of honey or anything slightly sweet or cream cheese-like. I was shocked that they would have sold this to my Mom. Super bummed, all these bagels and no cream cheese. I really hope this was a one time bad experience. read more

Tip: avoid the breakfast bagels with egg. They put an egg or egg substitute in a thin 'disposable ' plastic container and MICROWAVE it. We all know by now how toxic that it. The bathroom is filthy. I wonder about the food prep area behind the swinging doors. I've also noticed that they mix the older foods piled on top of the fresh. Like yesterday's leftover chicken salad on top of the fresh. This is bad food handling practice. There are dead flies on top of a layer of dust on the windowsills and cobwebs underneath the windowsills that line the dining area. This was my favorite place when I wanted to eat bagels , today I went with my daughter and when I was checking the menu , my daughter ask me to see inside where they have all the bagels , there was flys "jumping" flying from one kind of bagels to another one I told the guy what they have inside , with his hand he was trying to scare the flys ! And then he asked me what kind of bagel I was going to get ? It seems that he didn't understand what I was telling him , he call another guy who was working with him , I told him... there's flys on the bagels ! He saw me like if I was making a big scene , he's answer was amazing ! THERE ARE FLYS BECAUSE IT IS SUMMER ! I almost laugh when he said that ! I wouldn't say we would never come here again, I'm sure other things would be better, but the sandwiches we ordered were not great. My husband ordered the Sunrise (egg/bacon/cheese) without cheese, on a poppyseed bagel. I ordered the egg salad, and added avocado, to the everything bagel. I would not suggest the egg salad to anyone that typically likes egg salad at bagel shops. Usually it is just egg, maybe a little celery or tad onion. I too had many fond memories of The Bagel Bakery in Carmel from my childhood. The Bagels used to be SO good that I had my parents bring them to me while I was away at college. Sasha K. pretty much described my recent disappointing experience. The bagels are OK but the spreads are nothing like they used to be. There is less variety and lower quality overall. The service is faster but mostly because no one stands in line here anymore. I remember when the line was out the door on any given day. Now the restaurant is almost completely empty. It is starting to look run-down and it is not as clean as it should be. I walked away sad that The Bagel Bakery as I remember it is no more. I went to the location in PG and it was better. Soooo it is a chain bagel shop. It also offers Boba which make the location more unique. The customer service is direct and near immediate which is great, but not warm or inviting. The quality of the bagels were excellent. The ingredients for the bagel sandwiches was mediocre but does the job. If you are on-the-go or heading to Big Sur for a hike, this a great stop for breakfast and travel food. However, this is not the place for morning brunch. read more

I used to really love coming to The Bagel Bakery but on a recent stop in I bought 3 bagels. All of the bagels had pieces of hair in them. This is unacceptable and a complete turn off. I'll be hesitant to return to this shop in the future. read more

I am a longtime resident of Monterey Peninsula. I have been a customer at all of the Bagel Bakeries in the Monterey area. I have steadily watched the prices go up as the quality went down. You used to be able to rely on always getting a yummy sandwich on a bagel here, but no more. Yesterday, I had a bagel sandwich at the Carmel store, near the Barnyard and the bagel was stale. Definitely NOT baked that morning. It was the worst sandwich ever! I hope everyone votes with their feet and stop patronizing this place, if they think they can pass off day-old bagels to their customers at full price... the nerve! The line at Subway was out the door so we decided to give The Bagel Bakery a try. I am sorry to say the bagels were stale. In addition to being old and dry they were also miniature in size. I don't get it, it's called the Bagel Bakery but they serve up bad bagels. I had a tomato and onion sandwich on a toasted sesame seed bagel. It was actually difficult to bite through. My wife had the 'Andreas Fault' sandwich that featured egg, feta, sun dried tomato and avocado on a toasted onion bagel. She ate half and tossed the remainder. The people that work here are a bit odd - like haven't you seen a non white person before?! I always feel so out of place when coming home but I wish people would be less obvious about it. I found this place on yelp & there's another one close by with better reviews. I decided to go to this one since it was closer. ATM machine was broken, luckily I had cash. They do not have sourdough bagels so I chose the salted bagel instead. It was pretty good with lox salmon, onion, cream cheese, & capers. For $5.90 I thought was cheap but after looking at how small the initial bagel was it would be expensive. Ate my whole bagel & am still hungry! :( Maybe why all the poor reviews? Next time I'll go to a nicer place, pay more, & have better quality. I put 2 stars instead of 1 because the bagel itself (salted bagel) was pretty tasty. read more

Bagels are great, the menu has a lot of options, and service is wonderful. The new renovation provides a very clean, open, well-lit dining space. The bathroom is also very well kept. The bagels are very yummy and flavorful. I always get a toasted blueberry bagel with extra cream cheese and every time my meal has been delicious. They also offer a variety of breakfast sandwiches for both bacon-lovers and vegetarians. There are also many drink options including coffee, sodas, smoothies, and iced boba. If your bagel is not toasted to your liking, it only takes a few seconds to ask them to run the bagel through the toaster one more time or turn up the heat. The same goes for cream cheese, if there is not enough, ask for more. The staff is incredibly nice and are more than willing to make sure your bagel is perfect. This spot is also great for kids and families! In fact, it is "the spot" for students at the local middle school to hang out at after school. If you come anytime after 2:30, it is typically full of kids. The staff does a great job handling this after school rush and always makes an extra effort to make sure you get what you order. The staff always make an effort to ask me how I am doing. They are polite, quick, and the bagels are delicious! read more

This place is the only bagel place in town so I always give it chance after chance. Alas, it always lets me down. I really think they just dont understand how to make bagels. I went there at 7:45 Saturday morning and not only were the bagels not warm, they were hard. I genuinely think they were from the day before. Whats more, the lox I order was outrageously expensive and came in "packet" servings not by the pound. It also smelled fishy. I'm not a big bagel fan but I enjoy the Super Turkey, which is lots of turkey, tomato, sprouts, cranberry sauce on a choice of bagels. I always ask for cream cheese also. It's pricey but very tasty and a healthier choice than something with beef or pork. Their coffee is pricey too but it is pretty good. Service is very fast and friendly. Only complaint so far is a lack of Splenda for the coffee. I actually prefer Truvia and try to carry a few packets with me. read more

This is a regional chain in California that offers up bagels and bagel sandwiches primarily. Living in New York city, I was definitely skeptical. There was no way these bagels were going to compare to Murray's. And I was right on that point, the bagels themselves can't stand up to the scrutiny. These bagels are noticeably smaller and softer and their flavor is very slight. They are better than the nationwide chain bagels, but fall well short of a classic NY bagel. But that isn't all that important, because they still offer up some amazing sandwiches on said bagels. I had the "hunger buster" which included two servings of pastrami, Greek peppers, cheese, spicy mustard, and bean sprouts which I took on a poppyseed bagel. This was a fantastic sandwich! Delicately assembled, aesthetically interesting, and the flavors were great. I couldn't believe it, with the fresh clean flavors and the healthy addition of sprouts that they managed to convert a pastrami sandwich into a seemingly healthy dish -- only in California. And this entire west coast take on a pastrami sandwich was just lovely. It is totally different than any other pastrami sandwich I have ever had, and it was so very good. What a disappointment! The bagels were dry and stale. BLT sandwich was made with old, dry, and tasteless turkey bacon, little slice of tomato and a small leaf of some dark green dry leaf. The sandwich went right to the trash can. The tuna salad sandwich was no better. It tasted like mayo and nothing else. My husband was starving so he ate the most of it. Today I am mourning the loss of my bagel-induced childhood. I was raised in this area and have many memories of the Bagel Bakery and how many times we ate there as a family. Now I live in Oakland, and I visited the BB today for the first time in 5 years.....problems ensued First of all, I dragged my husband there, telling him that he "wouldn't believe how good their bagels and spreads are." We got there at 12, and immediately I noticed something was wrong. Where was the line out the door? The cream cheese and peach baked delicacies? The intoxicating smell of the herb cream cheese? Hmm...nothing to do by TRY THE BAGELS! I got my old standby - sesame seed toasted with herb cream cheese, and my husband got a sesame bagel with cream cheese and lox. When they gave me the bagels, and we sat down, my first thought was "where are the herbs? They must have messed up my order and given me plain cream cheese." Then I noticed the tiny green specks, there must have been four of them. Whose been messin with the recipe? The taste was soooo bland, like someone had just shaken some dried chives in. The herb cream cheese of my childhood actually had some flavor - garlic, onion, fresh herbs, it was SO GOOD. And SO GONE ): The bagels also seemed smaller than what they once were. Disappointed... Bagels were not toasted and one of the four bagels we ordered was not even cooked all the way (a bit doughy). We saw the worker put the bagel in the toaster but it was not toasted at all all, the bagels tasted like they were just cut without being toasted at all. Either their toaster is broken or they don't know how to use it. The coffee tasted fine but poured what stated was a vanilla nut flavor and it was certainly not vanilla; it was just a medium roast coffee. They might have brewed the wrong coffee. read more

Bagel Bakery has never failed me. I almost always get a vegetarian on a toasted superseed with cheddar cheese, light on the mayo and mustard. SO PERFCT. I also like the new yorker, the california nosh, the super turkey, the kupermans delight with cream cheese instead of jack, and the sunrise breakfast bagel. The workers always remember me, even if its been a year or two since I was in Carmel. They are also very generous and once they know you will let you have a small tab if your short. Great place, great service, awesome bagels. read more
