What an absolute scumbag response and straight up lie to try to save face on a bad review. How can you respond weeks/months later and magically "remember" this situation like you even know who I am? I was one of 15+ customers in one of your morning rushes. There was no scene because everyone knows it's not worth calling someone like that out at the risk of getting spit all over, while being told Covid is a hoax. I could see it in everyone's eyes, though... just waiting for the owner to say something and contemplating just leaving. He had every chance to say something, but he didn't. I've only been to New York once. So if you're looking for comparisons to independent bagel shops back east, you're barking up the wrong review. That said, it sure seems like plenty of Yelp reviewers (and even the Phoenix New Times) are willing to stick their necks out and declare this valley bagel shop worthy of New York style buzz. I like bagels. I'm not devoted to bagels, but I like them. So on a Saturday morning around 8am, I figured I'd stop by and see what all the fuss was all about. Owner Kal Salih's The Bagel Man can be found on the southwest corner of 51st Street and Elliot in Ahwatukee, just a stone's throw west of the I-10 freeway. This is actually the second location for The Bagel Man (the original is run by Kal's brother just outside NYC). So this place at least on paper brings the east coast bagel credentials to the table. Arriving at 8am, the place was packed with 12 patrons in line in front of me. The lines can certainly be attributed to their popularity, but also to its tiny size (with seating for 15 only), and to a bit of disorganization (more on that in a bit). After waiting my turn for about 15 minutes, I stepped up to give my order. There are at least a dozen different types of bagels to choose from at any one time, with Kal's crew visible in the back making new ones as fast as they can crank them out. You've got your plain, sesame, poppy, onion, garlic, salt, egg, honey wheat, pumpernickel rye, blueberry, cheese, and even your "everything" bagel. But for my first foray, I got one of their Cinnamon Raisin bagels. I opted to go with a breakfast sandwich in fact. Sausage, egg, and cheese on a toasted cinnamon bagel to be exact. Total cost? $5. Now here's where they lose me a little bit, and perhaps where The Bagel Man might be a victim of its own success. Before, during and after I ordered, the front crew were kind of a mess. They mixed up a number of orders, they forgot mine for a brief period, and there wasn't a consistent flow of responsibilities. At times the crew stopped everything, huddled in a group for something they were confused about and left us hanging. In fact the gal at the front register walked away to fix a coffee issue right in the middle of me telling her my order. I'm not sure if today's front crew was less experienced or just not on their A game, but a more efficient operation would've kept the line moving at a much faster clip. There, now that we've gotten that out of the way, how's the bagel (and more specifically the bagel sandwich I got)? Divine. The bagel is a perfect mix of crispy and chewy. The cinnamon and raisins don't overpower the dough flavor as other bagel shops often do and its the perfect vehicle for all those breakfast fixins. Most of the patrons in line this morning were ordering bagels by the dozens (one guy ordered 4 dozen). Given how my bagel tasted, I get why. So to sum up the verdict, yes I do buy the hype around the bagels themselves. Fresh made, done right, and priced right. The service at the counter left something to be desired, though clearly the long line suggests they have regulars ready and willing to accept a little inconvenience. Seating is limited (I found one, but I got lucky), so chances are you'll be coming here for take out only. New Yorkers, feel free to judge for yourself. But locals are clearly going nuts for these bagels, and rightfully so. read more

Born and raised in New Jersey, The Bagel Man is the only shop in Arizona I will buy bagels from. Luckily for me they are right down the street from my home. If you have not had a Taylor ham, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich, do yourself a favor and get one ASAP. I have to be honest, this place isn't the most efficient at taking orders, there's almost no room to stand inside once you've placed the order, and there is typically a line out the door to place orders. I used to come here when I had my Fiat and was getting it serviced at Bill Luke years ago. I wrecked the Fiat and had no need to go to Tempe and forgot about the bagels. Ok backstory, anyway, I'm from NY, yadda yadda, I love bagels, of course, so enough with the qualifying, just do you have taste buds, because these bagels are sooooo good. BUT NO, theres GOOD bagel shop bagels and these are darn GOOD. $12 for a bakers dozen is a deal hard to beat for fresh bagels. Crunch on the outside, fluffy on the inside. KThis is a good store to go to for bagels. I had a Jalapeno bagel with cream cheese and it was delicious. It would have been nice if I could have stayed a little longer and read the paper but the seating was fairly Limited. There are three tables outside and for small tables inside. Putting a few additional tables outside certainly would not hurt this business. There are plenty of options on the menu and you can see that they are making the bagels fresh in the back. There's also a good selection of deli meats displayed at the front counter. I would say this is a great place to pick up a dozen bagels for the office. I read all these wonderful reviews about this place. My family was so excited to try this place. We arrived at 10am on a Saturday. It opened at 6am and closed at 2pm. Apparently, they can close earlier if they sell out. When we arrived, there was already a line out the door. It was a tiny little cafe. A lot of people were ordering their food to go. We stood in line for about 25 min before we could order. When we got up to order, half of their bagels were already sold out. The plain bagels were even gone. We ordered 5 bagels and 1 bagel sandwich. My husband ordered The Sexy sandwich. It had Turkey and roasted peppers in it. He said it was ok. The Turkey tasted fresh, but the sesame bagel had an overpowering taste though. They were all out of plain bagels. The other bagels were humongous. They were quite chewy and flavorful. The Raisin Walnut Cream cheese was delicious. They had many topping options for bagels, such as various cream cheese and jelly. So just make sure that you get there early to get first choice on foods. The bathrooms were clean and well kept. read more

I mean, that creamy goodness was just overflowing out of my bagel with every bite... However, the walnuts (or walnut taste?) advertised in the name were nowhere to be found. It's alright though, it was still sweet & crunchy. Reviews of folks saying this place has the best bagel they've ever had is an exaggeration. They are good ... but certainly not the best. I stopped in for breakfast with intentions on getting a bacon, egg and cheese bagel on honey wheat but I didn't like the way the eggs looked. They looked as if they were liquid eggs ... I'm not sure. I decided to keep it simple and ordered a toasted cinnamon raisin bagel with the honey, walnut and raisin cream cheese. It was good but to me the bagel didn't' taste any better than a grocery store bakery. Just as an FYI, Basha's bakery is the bomb.com! This is quite simply one of the best places that I have ever been to. The bagels here are better than any that we have been able to find in New York. You could fill these with a shoe sole and they would be great but fortunately what they put in the inside is just as good as the outside. My absolute favorite is the lox with egg and cream cheese on everything and add bacon with the next one being sausage egg and cheese on sesame again add bacon. You can't go wrong though and their lunch sandwiches are also amazing. And then the Bagel Man himself. What a happy and great guy and the beat bagel maker in the world to boot. This place used to be absolutely fantastic. Now it's just a solid bagel shop. I had not gone here since 2015 . But remembered going here many years ago when it was thriving. I'm guessing that Covid dramatically negatively impact this business. Because they don't do nearly the volume they used to, things don't seem quite as fresh. These are my kinda bagels, man! A no funny bussiness kinda establishment. Just great food and sweet staff. My experience here brought me back to a trip to New York. I grabbed a lox with chive cream cheese on a toasted everything bagel to go. The sandwhich was huge and smelled fantastic! They make their own spreads and the flavor proves it. The bagel itself was fluffy and had that nice subtle salty flavor a good bagel should have. Service was quick and the staff were friendly. Will be back to try more! read more

First time visiting The Bagel Man, and we will definitely be back. No photos because we are our bagels (sesame bagel and cream cheese and everything bagel ham/egg/cheese sandwich) so quickly. We bought a dozen donuts to take home. I lived on the east coast for years, and there is nothing like a NY (or NJ) bagel! These hit the mark. Lovely boiled bagel with a perfect outside crust and delightfully chewy center. We found the owner to be kind and personable. The store was busy, with a lot of regulars who clearly know the drill, but he walked us through the menu, shared a little bit about himself (he's from Jersey exit 8 on the turnpike-by way of Egypt), has been making bagels since he was in his early 20's and gets up everyday at 3 am to make his delicious bagels! He even made us fresh coffee. I'm a little perplexed by the reviewers who are complaining about the store selling out? This is a small family-owned business. We went maybe about 45 minutes before close and they still had plenty of bagel options to choose from.
