We initially decided to try a different bagel shop this weekend because we heard through the grapevine that The Bagel Shoppe makes a good French Toast bagel. Sadly, it did not live up to our hopes and fantasies (that honor is still reserved for the best French Toast bagel in the universe at JT's Bagel Hut in Forked River, NJ). The Bagel Shoppe's French Toast bagel is a slightly sweet bagel dusted with cake crumbs (?) WTF? I was expecting a sweetened, cinnamon swirled, lightly coated with maple syrup and dusted with powder sugar mouth orgy......well, that didn't happen. Skip the french toast bagel. However.....all the other bagels we tried were very, very good as other reviewers have noted. The real surprise this weekend was the Flagel and Bialy. Flagel= flattened bagel. For all you carb conscioius dieters, don't get excited. It may appear smaller but, in reality, it has merely been flattened prior to baking. Flagel sightings are not very common, and my husband loves these mutant bagels. Bialy= a chewy, yeast roll that is similar to a bagel. Bialys are not boiled prior to baking (like bagels are) and are flatter and denser. They don't have a hole in the center but a cute dent and the tops of Bialys are sprinkled with diced onions and poppyseeds. Both the flagel and bialy at The Bagel Shoppe are superb! I just love a good bialy. For a little backround on the bialy...they originated in Bialystock, Poland (cue Mel Brooks in The Producers) and were introduced to the United States by immigrating Eastern European Jews. Well, let me tell you.......this Polish shiksa loves bialys and The Bagel Shoppe makes some really tasty ones. Who says you can't get a good bialy outside of the Lower East SIde? Don't believe the New York food snobs...............no need to schlepp to NYC when you can get a great bialy in NJ. read more

HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Bagels are made everyday FRESH in the early morning, for someone who lives nearby it's an amazing smell to wake up to. Staff is great and extremely friendly. Next time you go, ask for Nasimeh, shes definitely the best and most experienced of all. BUT THEY'RE ALL GREAT. Food is of amazing quality and is yet to disappoint me. I try to be there as often as I can because other bagel shoppes, like "Simon's" on Essex St. really do not deserve my money as much as this one. If you ever get the chance, stop by and get a Hazelnut Iced Coffee (extremely refreshing and YUMMY) and a flagel (flat bagel!!! Only place around that sells them and they're PERFECT for people like me who can't stand thick bread) egg and cheese. The menu is plentiful but not intimidating. It has something for everyone to enjoy. To sum it up: extremely friendly staff, great quality FRESH food, extreme variety and CLOSE BY. Not to mention there are about 10 people behind the counter in an unorganized mess forgetting orders and scrambling around one another. Sat in traffic and came all this way only to get here and find out they're out of plain bagels!!??? This place was not worth it. I only went here because of the reviews and I'm pissed I wasted 7 dollars on shitty bagels and an egg and cheese. It's really not that hard to make a good sandwich- actually it's rather hard to make a bad one but by they succeeded. First of all they didn't have a breaded chicken cutlet....so I opted for a simple egg and cheese on a plain bagel. The bagel was not heated and hard- probably at least 3 days old and the cheese was not melted...like seriously. I could've made a better one at home. When I ask for something and I'm paying for it I expect the person to listen. There was barely any filling - it was all bread. First time coming here and they didn't have any bagel that I wanted. Then when I ended up with my last option, that didn't come out good at all. All the cream cheese was just on ONE side of the bagel.... my bagel wasn't scooped after I asked numerous times to make sure it was scooped and when I gladly showed them the bagel they were convinced it was scooped. Best bagel with Taylor ham in NJ hands down! Taylor ham is sliced thin and cooked to perfection... the right amount of crisp. The ratio of Taylor ham, egg and cheese is just perfect. Every time is consistent you are never disappointed. Doesn't matter if the place has a line out the door or if you are the only one there the quality is never compromised. So finally after three years I came back to this place last weekend and I dragged my boyfriend with me as well with promises that this place has the best bagels I ever had. Now I am aware that I havent had what seems to be the privilege to eat at Ess- A Bagel and some of the other highly rated bagel places in NYC but I still believe that this place is amazing. The bagels feel so fresh and soft, they put just the right amount of cream cheese and the price for my plain bagel (with cream cheese and tomato, I dont think they charge much or anything for the tomato) came out to 1.70 something. I would say not bad at all. My boyfriend had the everything bagel with cream cheese toasted. He said they put just the right amount of everything on it, what most places according to him fail to do . So what do we have here? Bagel- soft, fresh, good amount of cream cheese Price- more than decent and also the tea there is awesome ( I got cranberry apple I believe), so is the coffee In conclusion- still highly recommended, and I am eagerly planning my return!! read more

It's an average deli. Their bagels are average size and average flavor. I've tried their poppy seed, everything, garlic, wheat, and sesame varieties. They carry a standard selection of beverage choices. Thumann's is their deli meat of choice. And they have a $10 minimum for credit/debit cards. They offer up to 8 different cream cheese toppings. There are no tables or counter top seating. I've been here enough times to know that you're not going to be wowed, but that also means that you're not going to be disappointed either. read more

The French toast bagel is to die for, not too sweet but just right. It can get pretty busy early in the morning and on the weekends but the staff is very nice and can always handle a crowd. I have been in living in the area for over 10 years, this place has steadily gone down hill enough so that I returned food today for a refund, nothing is fresh nothing is made correctly, and to be extremely blunt the place is looking worn down and unkept. The young kids that are employed are not trained so there is no consistent product being offered. 10 years ago maybe a 3 star revue but now I would tell everyone to go to Goldberg's on route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights everything is better there it's not even a close. read more

Great bagels here. This is a small store but there are lots of bagels to choose from and the staff is very friendly. During pumpkin spice season, I highly recommend picking up pumpkin bagels here and pairing with Philadelphia pumpkin spice cream cheese. read more

Not bad bagels...much better then the average

Was looking for a bagel store near Hackensack hospital and came across the bagel Shoppe. I ordered a sesame bagel scooped out toasted with butter. Even though they were pretty crowded the service was fast and I thought the price was fair. Unfortunately the way the bagel was wrapped caused it to leak all out of the wrapping, through the bag, staining my car. The taste of the actual bagel was ok but it caused a mess. read more

Stopped in here for a quick breakfast this morning with a group of 4. The bagels are delicious and the menu is fairly large for somewhere with just counter ordering. I had the french toast bagel with butter. The girl who helped me went REALLY heavy on the butter. Like enough butter that half my bagel ended up soggy. The flavor of the bagel was great though but definitely would have been better with less butter. My husband had the egg bagel with eggs and cheese on it. He said it was really good. Not really sure why the reviews for this place are so great. I'm not a fan of the bagels because I find them to taste stale and hard every time I've gone. The amount of egg cheese and meat they give in a breakfast sandwich is a joke. They over fry the eggs til they are just burnt and gross.
