Baked Bear makes their icecream offsite but it's their own creations. It is not bought from a third party like BlueBell. Their flavors are unique. Great variety for the cookie icecream sandwiches. A bonus is they have gluten free cookies for those with gluten issues. The cookies were thinner and smaller which was the only downer. Price wise: it's about $10 a cookie sandwich. That adds up quickly to a family. Shilled out over $30 for 3 sandwiches. That's equivalent to 5 gallons of icecream at the grocery store. Quite expensive and overly sweet. I'm so glad that they opened up a Baked Bear on South Padre, it's the perfect treat after a long day at the beach. Their ice cream and cookies are all homemade which sets them apart from many of the other dessert shops. I came here with my family after eating dinner around 7 pm and it was packed! The interior is on the smaller side, but they do have a decent amount of free parking spots in the surrounding area. Another thing that sets Baked Bear apart is that the employees here are super friendly and take the time to explain the menu to you and let you sample some of the ice creams. I ended up going with the ice cream cookie sandwich with a Cookie Monster cookie on top and a gooey butter cake cookie on the bottom. It's unique that they let you have full customization options on the cookie and ice cream which makes it an enjoyable experience every time. The ice cream was a tough decision but after much deliberation, I ended up choosing the bear batter which was a blue version of cake batter! Big bear was pretty good! It fell just short of 5 stars as the sandwiches are quite pricey at ~$10 (our 4 sandwiches cost $40 before tax and tip) and the ratio of the sandwiches is a little odd. On the other hand, the portions were huge so that does somewhat justify the price. As mentioned above, I felt the ratio of cookie/brownie to ice cream was pretty low as in there was a ton of ice cream. If you have kids, have them split one and maybe they will finish. I finished my sandwich but my wife couldn't. Taste wise and service it was a really good experience with a cool feel to the restaurant.
