    Cinnamon roll

I was excited to try this place because it had been recommended to me by some friends about their brown butter latte. I got it with whole milk and it wasn't too bad. I'd say mine was a little milky and that's mostly the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars because of the latte. It also had like a sort of almost sour taste- not sure if it was supposed to taste like that. The cinnamon roll I got was super good tho, I'd definitely recommend! It was packed but very homey.

Had lunch with Bambie and the 3 Labrador retrievers. Sat at a sidewalk table. Weather was perfect. So was the food. We each had a sandwich and a pastry. Scrumptious. Fresh and alive flavors. My favorite brunch place in Auburn.

I learned about this bakery gem at the 2025 Terra Madre Americas event, where I got to sample various breads from their vendor booth. It was no wonder why their meyer lemon rosemary sourdough loaf was flying and selling like crazy! I'm so glad I got a loaf to enjoy at home. It is delicious all on its own or dipped in olive oil! The staff is friendly and high energy, and they answered all of my questions, which is important for me since I have stomach sensitivities to many bread ingredients out there. They use simple, healthy ingredients for the win! The only down side is they are a bit far away from where I live, so next time I make a trip to Auburn, I must stop by to buy another loaf and try their other products!

Thai Rice salad and gluten-free cornbread. Yum

First visit, quite liked it. Quite bust midweek late lunch but impressed with service, quality and the food itself. I got the Thai Rice salad with gf cornbread (salty and yummy) -- generous portions. Salad was delicious but I wished it had more lettuce and less rice. My friend had avocado toast with egg and she was happy with it. Hopping busy but we could hear ourselves talk at indoor table so it was fine. Love how big their loaf slices are! I watched worker cut pieces and was amazed how she made sure every cut was the same size (knife width). Great place.

We decided to stop here on the way up to Tahoe to grab breakfast and lunch to bring to the mountain. The gentleman, Ken, who runs the shop with his son, was super friendly and accommodating to my special requests. My husband ordered the breakfast sandwich...it was super tasty with onions caramelized to perfection. We both ordered a turkey sandwich to go...the bread was so fresh and delicious and made with quality ingredients and I might add that they were not stingy with the amount of avocado they loaded on the sandwich! We also bought a loaf of Meyer lemon Rosemary sourdough to go, which I highly recommended. You can tell by the great customer service and goods baked to perfection, that this bakery takes a lot of pride in the work they do! I will definitely be back to try more!

Amazing place to eat, always packed. I get the avocado toast each time and it's delicious. A little smaller than the usual bread they use but still good. The latte was decent and well brewed. The egg nog cake isn't something I usually try but it was DELICIOUS. Cinnamon and cake made a baby with egg nog. Definitely coming back here again a thousand times over. I believe this right here is my 5-6th visit. I recommend very strongly, never a miss, only a hit.

toast with bacon, potatoes, pickled red onion and greens

The staff is so nice! My lavender latte was tasty. I am just so confused by the food. Brown butter pumpkin muffin had a very nice texture but it was so bland. Almond croissant was doughy/dry and not pastry flaky. The filling was~ watery and thin. I also tried the toast with avocado, bacon, potatoes cheese, pickled red onion and greens.. the potatoes were still crunchy and undercooked. I understand items with cooking times can be difficult during the rush, might want to skip that part. I ordered everything to go as it was busy, and on the way out I noticed an empty table being "saved" by some Stanley cups and a pair of sunglasses. Do better patrons, a small business shouldn't have to tell you "please order before selecting a table". I could have sat down, finished my snack and left before you had even made it to the counter to order as the line was to the door. Such a bummer, this was a planned special visit for me and I ended up sitting on my truck tailgate with my snacks.

I was introduced to this place at the Terre Madre Festival and since I went up to Auburn for the day I decided to stop by and so glad I did. The meyer lemon rosemary sourdough is PHENOMENAL! And I also got a cinnamon roll which was delicious. There was a long line, but they worked pretty quickly. It's cozy and cute inside as well. Will definitely be back to try more things and get more bread! Thank you!

Sweet Croissant and Brown Butter latte with oat milk IM

This was my first time at the Baker and the Cake Maker. My grandpa recommended I try the brown butter latte, and it did not disappoint. It was perfectly smooth and not too sweet. What takes the cake though, was the sweet fruit croissant. The crisp, airy freshness of the croissant paired with perfect balance of tartness from the lemon and cream cheese filling with the sweetness of the fruit and the brown sugar was perfection. I debated going back in to try more pastries, but I will definitely be back!

Popular local spot but just ok baked goods with limited breakfast and lunch menu. Croissants are very bready (vs flaky crusty), and bread doesn't have the chewy light crumb I like. - Cinnamon Roll: probably the best item. But very sweet. - chocolate croissant: I liked how chocolatey and gooey this was but did not like the croissant which was like bread in the shape of a croissant - avocado toast: Very aesthetic. too many seeds and wasn't a fan of the pickled vegetables on top. Ordered with soft boiled egg which was done well but expensive (~$3) - breakfast sandwich: Was ok. The eggs were baked with cheese and very unusual. - sourdough Pullman: too sour, and bread was too brioche/bready as you can see. - mocha: too sweet. - coffee: average. Maybe good for cakes, but would not return.

After making a random and unexpected drive to Auburn (which is the county seat of Placer County), I decided to check out one of their most well-known bakeries/coffeeshops, "The Baker and the Cakemaker". Located directly on Lincoln Way and tucked in between of High St. and State Highway 49 in the heart of downtown Auburn, this place has been serving up delicious baked goods and coffee beverages dating back to 2019. Hours of operation are Tue-Fri from 6am-4pm, Sat from 7am-4pm, and closed Sun/Mon. I came here during the afternoon of Saturday 9/21/2024 at around 2:30pm as I was on the hunt for an iced coffee drink with a muffin. Since this was well after the morning rush, it wasn't that busy at all. As far as the interior layout/setup, everything is laid out very well complete with ample seating and a cozy atmosphere. They offer several fresh loaves of bread as well as many of the popular fresh baked goods; muffins, croissants, cakes, and cookies. They even offer popular breakfast/lunch options including toasts, sandwiches, and salads. I ended up ordering one of their gluten-free blueberry muffins complete with an iced vanilla latte. Total price for everything was around $8 + tax. I then proceeded to their outdoor patio area and all I have to say is that this is one of the more peaceful/tranquil places to relax and chill no matter what time of day it is. The muffin was absolutely delicious as you wouldn't have the slightest hint that it was gluten-free. The latte was also above average but just a little too watered-down as I wasn't able to taste a lot of the espresso. No big deal as it was still served in a large glass cup. All in all, "The Baker and the Cakemaker" is one of the better family owned-and-operated businesses in Auburn as it offers more of that relaxed vibe that you don't find in nearby Roseville or Rocklin. With competitive prices, respectable hours, above average customer service, and delicious fresh food, I am giving them four stars.

Sourdough cinnamon roll was sooo good!!! Not overly sweet, just right!!!

There is a bathroom that you must ask for a key to. Once 1:30 rolled around, I was excited to try my sandwich given the great reviews, then came 1:40, then 1:50, and I did not have my sandwich until around 1:55. I worked in a sandwich shop for 3 years, so I know sometimes a wait is unavoidable and can recall dealing with rude customers, so I did not approach the staff regarding the wait. They were trying their best to accommodate the orders. However-- 35 minutes for 2 sandwiches, I think, is a little excessive. In the end, my sandwiches were spectacular, genuinely well crafted, and met (maybe even surpassed) my expectations. When I got back to my car, I noticed the worker (owner?) gave me a full sandwich despite me ordering half. I wasn't sure if this was purposeful as means of saying "our bad", or just a mistake, but I will say it left me in better spirits. If you have some extra time to kill, with friends etc., this is a must try. However, if you are on ANY sort of time restriction, I would not recommend stopping here. I'm sure this is not always the case, but as a stop on a long drive, I did not consider an extra 45 minutes for a sandwich. If the owners are reading this, I truly mean well and hope you know a long wait is a sign of success. Growth is inevitable!

The day before the race, I arrived in Auburn (my first time ever) to pick up my race bib and to look around to take in the local culture. Nectar Cafe was at the top of the search results. As luck would have it, Nectar Cafe was just a short walk from where I parked my car, and just a short walk from the Start/Finish line of the race. Man... I am so glad this restaurant exists. The food and the service were great. I had the Southwestern Wrap and a brownie. I was so happy with this place that I knew I had to go back the following day after my race. And that's exactly what I did. The following day I had a BBQ Burger with their own house made patty. And this time I had even more dessert. All the desserts are vegan, and they are awesome! I tried all of them. The chocolate chip cookie, the brownie, and the chocolate mousse were delicious. Maybe on the pricey side but I think it was very fair for the quality they serve. On a Sunday afternoon it was a constant stream of customers, but they have some indoor seating and plenty of covered outdoor seating with misters. Ketchup and water dispenser available along with packaged condiments like more ketchup, mustard, mayo, and even malt vinegar. Names are called on the speaker and they have several windows to pick up at. Orders are placed inside or outside at the window. It's pretty neat and makes for a perfect blend of updated/nice with great old school charm. I ordered the Guido (pastrami burger), halfsies (family size of fries and onion rings, opted for waffle fries), and a vanilla twisty with heath bar. The Guido is excellent, but you have to know what you're in for. With the pastrami and the deli mustard, it tastes overwhelmingly like a pastrami sandwich and less like a burger. But the patty, cheese, and veggies do add something to it. It's also very messy, but it was delicious. The onion rings were excellent. They have that smooth batter style, sorta kinda like tempura. My wife prefers the panko style so she was more into the fries. For the fries, they were good but I'd probably opt for normal fries next time instead of waffle fries. I was expecting something somewhat similar to chick fil a, but these were a little on the thicker side and almost had the texture of potato wedges. I'm also not a big fry seasoning guy, and these were well seasoned. But that's a me thing. We still ate them all and you know when I come back I'm not leaving here without fries. The twisty was really good. I might be the only one, but I'm such a sucker for heath bar when I saw it on the menu I had to order it. The ice cream was really good quality. Had a great texture and taste. They were generous with the heath bar. I'm aware I took down a disgusting amount of food, but I think if I could change one thing I'd get the larger size of the twisty next time. It was really good. Wish they had a location closer than 30 mins up the hill, but that won't stop me. Note that my wife asked about the black bean patty and it has cheese in it so it is vegetarian but not dairy free or vegan. So if you go that way, there's that. Not much for you besides fries and dole whip.

A Great Burger, a Little Nostalgia, and a 20-Minute Test of Patience…read more I've been bringing my family to this location for years--back when it was a Foster Freeze. This place has some history for me. Many a Friday night, when I was the Defensive Coordinator for Lincoln High School, I'd find myself here. And on those hot summer days, my wife and I would stop in with our son Jonathan before heading off to watch Lincoln play Nevada City. So, yes... I have a little emotional investment in this place. Fast-forward to today, and I'm happy to report that the burgers are still worth talking about. The buns were soft, the meat was flavorful, and the whole burger experience hit the spot. And, of course, my family gave the milkshakes their official seal of approval--which, in my household, is basically a Michelin star. The menu has plenty of good options, there's outdoor seating, and the staff is genuinely working hard. They're multitasking like their lives depend on it, so every once in a while you may need to repeat your order. But honestly, I'd rather see people working hard and trying to take care of everyone than standing around looking bored. Parking can be a bit challenging, too. Consider it part of the dining experience--your appetizer is finding a parking space. So why only four stars? The wait. We waited about 20 minutes for our food. It wasn't terrible, but when you're hungry enough to start considering whether ketchup packets are technically a meal, 20 minutes feels like a lifetime. That said, the food was really good, the staff was friendly, and there's a genuine sense that people are working hard to make this place successful. Bottom line: Great burgers, excellent milkshakes, a solid menu, friendly people, and a little nostalgia thrown in for free. I'd absolutely recommend giving this place a try. Just remember: bring your appetite, a little patience, and maybe say your order twice. Four stars--and I'll definitely be back.
