This bakery blew my frickin brain out of my ears, baked it just right, and returned it to me in far better working condition. Them bagels will get you swoll. The coffee is so strong and black the dinosaurs would cower in fear of it destroying the sun. And don't get me started on lovely goddamned staff. I waited in line for 10 minutes and finally left before I was asked if I'd like to order anything. Things I noted while waiting in line: Food prep staff has greasy loose hair. One woman with blue hair was ranting about a customer who'd just left to customers in line. Dunno circumstances. This place was very lovely from the outside. But upon going inside, it was...okay. After I purchased my pastry I then noticed the many flies and gnats inside the case WITH the pastries! I tried to wait for all the customers to leave before I said something but ended up leaving and calling them to let them know I would NOT be eating this pastry because the place wasn't sanitary. The guy said I could come and get my money back. When I did, there was no apology or explanation. I appreciate and love to support small businesses. But not at the expense of my health. I haven't been to the bakery in a few years because I felt that the prices were too high,and the quality was not, and I was repeatedly disappointed by the stale cakes. I returned recently for lunch and again was disappointed. The chicken was very dry and the side salad tiny. My husband had a tiny piece of quiche with a side salad. I agree with all of the negative reviews, and some of the more positive ones. For the price of the cakes, pastries, and other baked goods, one would expect something other than cardboard. Unfortunately, we have no other bakery in the entire town; hence, the need for those of us who live here in the summer and weekends to go to Stop and Shop for better baked goods - really. The sandwiches are good, but the wait and the staff make going there a hassle. It is so small that one has to constantly move further down the aisle. That has never bothered me if the food is amazing, but it is not. The good things are the sandwiches (if you have lots of time) and the outdoor seating. I really wanted to like this place! My visit started off well, too - nice-looking shop, good range, good service, promisingly busy - but things went downhill very fast once once I actually ate what I bought. The black and white would have been good except it was so overbaked the edges were crunchy. So wrong. And the brownie...this was the first time in my life I've ever thrown out a brownie half-eaten. Dry, cakey, weird aftertaste, and the only chocolate involved in making it seemed to have been a very scant amount of cocoa. Sad. read more

I remember when the Bakery was in its old building which could only fit 5 customers and the line would be out the door and half-way to the sidewalk before holidays. I will always have some favorites here that will hold a dear place in my heart - Finger cookies, hand cookies, those lacy chocolate sandwich cookies, and croissants. However, I am sad to say that I find that The Bakery's quality has gone downhill. Skip the inauthentic knishes and the bagels that don't deserve to be bagels. Stick to cookies, the challah, and the awesome apple cake. A great place to hang out when it's nice enough to sit outside. Memo to the Bakery: Please clean your rugs. It' getting kinda stinky upstairs. I just don't understand how a place that's been a landmark in New Paltz and obviously turns a profit could not think about giving its interior dining area a facelift. Not only are the rugs stinky and smelly, but the paint is peeling in numerous places. Yeck! How can New Paltzers stand this. I only get cake and coffee here - can't comment on the savory side of the menu. Sometimes the counter staff does seem a bit off, but I find their sweets consistently good. I also like the atmosphere, either sitting inside our out. As in previous visits with different items to eat and drink, my iced coffee and raspberry almond tart and my husband's regulach were exactly what we were looking for as a mid afternoon break. Sitting under the shade trees next to the fountain added to our good experience. I don't think they're too expensively priced - baked goods are not cheap to make. read more

I wish it were cleaner as I have been there and have witnessed the owner stepping over the garbage overspill from the cans . The baked goods are definitely the highlight, just be prepared for a potentially LONG wait at the counter (no table service). You often only have two people trying to fill orders, make sandwiches, etc. I guess their main priority is the baking staff in the kitchen. So do not wait until you are hungry to go... Been a fan for years but for the life of me, I just can't get a good hot cup of coffee here. It's usually tepid and weak. So I won't try it again. Frustrating, because this is a bakery and I boycott the chain two blocks away so that I can support local business. Sometimes they serve you day or two-day old salads from the deli case so you have to ask which was made today. The baked goods and sandwiches are always fantastic, however. And the servers are sweet. So you just need to be selective, skip the coffee and go for drinks in the case. read more

i have visited this place many times, and generally its positive. the pastries are very good and i feel like they are not heavy handed with sugar on them, which is nice. i like how they have healthier options with their sweets and they seem to make their regular stuff sightly more healthier. honestly i never had any of savory items, but am willing to try them in the future, since i love this place more as sweet treat retreat. i had a strawberry short cake cup today and it was great, the cream and the cake was good and moist and not overly sugar. i was disappointing the chopped local strawberries, was sightly frozen. rather then being soggy, which would be easier to eat. their cookies are good and not dried out, i had a raspberry tart before and it was sweet and crispy. other then that, i love the second floor sitting with the large windows, where you can get a nice view of the streets and just people watch. outside sitting looks nice, but it seems crowded since most people do it. the servers their are polite and respectful and never seemed bothered to be asked questions on the items and whats in them. read more

Tried out some peanut butter brownies--way too sweet and had a giant layer of frosting (about 1/3 of height) that made my teeth ache. The chocolate croissant was ok, but overpriced. It was not crisp and the filling was grainy. The bread here is excellent, and pretty much the only reason I still come. I like the challah the best, but it seems like they rarely have it anymore.. On the last 5 visits, I'd say they had it twice. This time, there wasn't even a label for the empty shelf. I got country white instead. Because of the plethora of bakeries in New Paltz and the surrounding area, I'll probably be replacing the Bakery with another. read more

I came to the Bakery for breakfast every day during my college years. After college I went away and started a family. When my kid was born I returned to town and a daily ritual was renewed. The Bakery was once again a dependable daily for at the very least great coffee and fresh service. Over nearly another decade I continued to trust this spot on the daily. Now the allure of the Bakery has been passed on to my 8 year old who looks forward to her cookies and croissants. The staff treat everyone like a good friend. I've been going to the Bakery for about 10 years, ever since I was a student at SUNY New Paltz. It's a quaint little place that has it's highs and not-so-highs, most of which are a byproduct of being a business in a small town. But it does the job and there are a few things that they do well The Pros- a) Coffee is rather delicious, including a daily flavored option tickles my palate - like pumpkin, creme brule, etc b) Frequent organic house made savory options, including vegetarian noodles, vegan options, spinach and feta cheese croissants (which I love love love), knishes, stuffed pretzels, etc c) Daily made bread, scones, muffins, bagels with homemade cream cheeses with a variety of options (including a bacon chipotle which is pretty damn good) d) The baked goods actually made on the premises are pretty decent, including the coconut raspberry bars and their almond cookies. Some are a little heavy (peanut butter brownies) but overall not winning any awards. It's a good tasty treat if that's what you are looking for. e) Friendly staff - everyone in this place is helpful and always in a positive mood, which helps diffuse a lot of the rush rush rush mentality of some of the out-of-towners The Cons- A) Again, this is a small town with an early rising crowd so sauntering in at 1pm on a full foliage weekend will find most of the stash wiped out as some reviewers have griped about. b) In good weather during busy times, you could wait as long as 20 minutes for a cup of coffee. I wish they'd have a 'coffee only' line so you don't have to wait for the few families of four in front of you to order individual specific items that need to be prepared. c) The seating upstairs is a little cramped, not cleaned thoroughly (my table is frequently riddled with crumbs) and a bit loud. Overall, I prefer this place over most of the other options in NP, especially on a Main Street where the only alternative for a quick cup of coffee and bite to eat is Starbucks. What's preventing a higher rating is the cramped ordering line and the lack of better management of the line during busy times. read more

The food itself isn't BAD, but when you're expecting customer to pay top dollar for your items, they have to be WORTH top dollar. I come here quite often for coffee and baked goods in the morning. Although I've never had any lunch items at The Bakery, they always look tasty and fresh. I really like this place, the staff is always friendly, which I think says a lot for the management too. Thanks for being awesome! One suggestion - you should have a Facebook page! I lived in a small town in Maine last year, similar in size and culture to New Paltz...their local coffee shop had a Facebook page, and updated it often to let people know what specials they had. It was very creative and funny - I still read their comments today even though I live 8 hours away :) Just a thought! read more

I've been going to the bakery for years. I love the staff - they are always friendly and helpful. They are very knowledgeable in regards to everything they have and if they don't know something - they know who to ask. The food is excellent. All their baked goods are just too yummy - they are probably to blame for a few pounds I've gained over the years. Also, their lunch sandwiches are quite tasty. The ground level is small but there is a large upstairs area with many tables and is a great local meeting place. Can't imagine New Paltz without The Bakery. read more

I just ordered pastries from this bakery a few days ago. When I arrived to pick them up I about fell over when the girl told me how much they were. WAY too expensive and they weren't even that good! There was little to no customer service. Both girls behind the counter openly started discussing that they had no idea what "order" I had placed until finally one of them remembered and went and got it. I left and will not be coming back. I really want to like The Bakery and give it a great review, however, the best descriptor word I can come up with for this establishment is inconsistent. The baked goods are very good, as are the soups, bagels, and pre-made dishes (tortellini with pesto, salads, etc.). The counter help ranges from pleasantly friendly and helpful to downright rude, and this is reflected in some of the offerings, such as the sandwiches, wraps, and coffee drinks. I find some of the other customers to be extremely pushy, rude and inconsiderate. While I am aware that the actions of some of the patrons have nothing to do with the people who work at the Bakery, I have to say I really do not appreciate someone pushing ahead of me in line (or allowing their children to cut in line), then having this person be waited on "out of turn" after waiting patiently. It is easy for people to push in front of others here, and children often (understandably) are excited by the cookies in the case, and run ahead of other customers to take a look, but it is rather frustrating when their parents act the same and push in front of others who have been waiting 10 or so minutes when it's busy, and show no consideration for the other customers. Maybe a number system can be utilized to make sure everyone is helped in the order they are waiting? Maybe I'm super sensitive to folks who don't have manners and cut in line, something we all (presumably) learned not to do in grade school? (Although I highly doubt I'm the only one who is bothered by other adults' bad manners).
