I was browsing Yelp for a different BBQ spot in the Bronx and found the Barbecue Pit. This past weekend, my girlfriend and I decided to check the place out and we were so glad we did. I can't believe this place has been in the Bronx for 19 years and I've never had the pleasure of dining here. First off, Rani (the owner) was great. She came to our table and spoke to us and was very attentive. My girlfriend and I both had the chicken and rib combo. the meat was fantastic. You can tell that the BBQ sauce was house made. Also, the mac and cheese was good, but what really sold me was that you can taste the freshness. The portions were decent. We ended up taking a doggy bag home along with a slice of Key Lime Pie. I've been ordering in from here weekly since I moved to Riverdale last year. The food is evenly excellent - tasty and well-portioned. I am a big fan. Particular favorites for me are the beef quesadilla and fried chicken dinner but I also enjoy the burger: ask for it with fried onions and cheese. I love the atmosphere and the setting. It's small and quaint and has really good ribs that's not from applebees or from dallas bbq. I went here with 5 people and almost tried everything on the menu lol. The samosas are delicious, good filling not flimsy and not greasy at all, best with the mango chutney yummm. The wings are delicious, crispy, and saucy and I know they have some football deal going on some day with deals on the wings. The vegetarian burger is homemade and delicious, I'm craving one now actually. I prefer the vegetarian burger here than a regular burger any day. A lot of flavor and not just a mush full of vegetables. Also the vegetarian biryani was really good too, my cousin ordered this and I couldn't stop stealing some off her plate. The rice was flavored well with good spices and it was a good balance with that and some bbq. And ribs, I really enjoyed them here. Fall off the bone but still had some char to it, with some sweet bbq sauce, more vinegar based but I can put that sauce on everything. So my boyfriend ordered food here while I'm at work. His first words were winner winner chicken dinner haha, he said the wings here were by far the best he's had here in NYC. I can't tell you how happy I am I've finally found a decent barbecue place within 12 minutes of my house. Barbecue Pit is terrific. I've eaten here three times and the meals have been consistently delicious. Two remarkable things: 1) The chef (who is a fabulous woman) seasons all the barbecue items with a HINT of something distinctly Indian. This gives a very unique flavor, remarkable but not overwhelming, ultimately deferring to the barbecue flavor as the primary taste. 2) A full compliment of Vegetarian dishes. There might be better BBQ city-side but none of those places are veg friendly. HHtDL could sit down to a traditional briyani while you coat your lips in barbecue sauce and flecks of meat. Unlikely, but possible! The quality of the food is complimented by terrific service. The Chef herself will come out and check up on diners. She is a thoughtful cook and dotes over the food with a Bubbe's intensity. Baby back ribs are the meatier, tastier choice. Fries are non greasy, almost baked. House veggie burger was mad-good. Had the chicken and ribs with spinach and cornbread to take out. it seemed like a very comfortable place to eat and converse with patio style storefront. Seems most people order out cuz no one was in sight i went around lunch may be a different story in the evening. Ribs were amazing tender and juicy ...meat fell right off the bone. I really want to like this place, as it's local and offers fare not easily found in this neighborhood. Sadly, however, I keep wrestling with the prices and the fact that it's not in any way *real* BBQ. Alternative/Indian dishes like the veggie Biryani are yummy, and I think the chef is a good cook. The problem is that the BBQ dishes have no real smokiness and are cooked in an oven, producing lackluster results. A real smoker and a real tandoor would elevate this place to the point of justifying its asking prices. Sure the family meal is quite reasonable, but to pay 15 bucks for rice and veggies, just for example, is simply too much given the location and the ambience. My suggestion: if you're going to do Indian/BBQ cross-over food, do it more adventurously, make something new, and invest in some kind of real smoking tech. That or just make nice Indian food, something lacking in Riverdale, that Johnson ave MSG meltdown notwithstanding. Drop the cheap Magi bouillon bases for sauces that are traditionally loaded with DSG/MSG, and put a little more into the home cooking dimension of your formula and then feel good about asking what you do for plates. As it stands, this isn't bad for the occasional roast chicken with greens and sweet potatoes, but it certainly isn't a place you'd want to order from regularly. I really have no idea why this place even has customers. I'm disgusted after ordering delivery for the first time. I ordered the Honey BBQ Pork Empanadas and Pulled Pork Quesadilla. The Quesadilla was a HALF Quesadilla and was impossible to eat with my hands. It was full of bland beans and bland cheese, with very little pork. The entire thing was (you guessed it) bland, and the portion was child-sized. I also ordered the empanadas, not empanada singular, and it arrived burned and cold all at the same time. The filling was barely recognizable as pork, and reminded me of wet dog food. In my experience, I spent more than 20 dollars for extremely lackluster food, miniature portions, and a terrible experience. I would've had a more enjoyable time watching a 20 dollar bill burn right in front of my eyes, because at least it wouldn't go to the crooks that call this a restaurant... I love that others have been here and really love it! It's hard not to have really good feelings about a family place in the Bronx that serves up some really good food. There's quite a bit more going on than just ribs, and if you are really thinking Barbecue Pit=something like Dinosaur, you're going to be disappointed, because that's not really what it's all about. The baby back ribs were perfect with a nice BBQ crust and a juicy fall off the bone tenderness and full of flavor! A full rack of ribs for 20!!! With two sides included. The mashed potatoes n gravy...perfect, cole slaw....perfect. The service was warm and hospitable. The few cold reviews I read were from delivery customers. So. Sorely disappointed with this place! Was looking for a good BBQ spot in the Bronx and this location showed up as 4 stars but in reality it was worth 1 star. I should have known better when there was no delicious smells coming from the "pit" and there were no seated customers. I am not sure why this place is highly rated. It's an embarrassment to BBQ food. The BBQ chicken was bland and the sauce is from some generic brand you can buy in your local supermarket. The Mac and cheese was terrible with absolutely no flavor. And again it tasted from something you can buy at the supermarket. I gave the rest to my dog who enjoyed it. Don't waste your time, stomach or money at this place. Most of the food is pretty incredible. If when you hear "barbecue" you're thinking Souther-style barbecue joint, it's not that. BUT, it is barbecue grilled food that is of great quality. Good meats, good seasoning, just good tasting. HOWEVER... the fries are terrible and cardboardy and the prices are absolutely outrageous. I'm not poor. So I'm not saying that in a "I'm 13 years old and had to spend my whole allowance on this" or like "I had to work 2 weeks to get some ribs" way. I mean in general, the prices make absolutely no sense. Her profit margins must be insanity. Seriously. I would love to see the formulas they use in managing the revenue there. Just go get some meats and buns from the grocery store and grill stuff yourself for a fraction of the cost. You're probably better off. Also, not a sit down place. Must take out/deliver. Decent BBQ, but needs improvement. We ordered buffalo wings, fried chicken with a side of stuffing and spinach, and ribs with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese for the sides. Agree with a previous reviewer that everything has a hint of Indian spice so everything has a unique, distinct flavor which I liked. The wings were cooked well and flavorful, but the blue cheese dip was too watery and too sour. The fried chicken, ribs and spinach were overcooked. I like a bit of chargrilled flavor with my barbecue but there were ribs that were so hard and black that they were inedible. Two pieces of the fried chicken were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, but the third piece was overcooked, dry and blackened to the point where pieces needed to be taken off and discarded. The mashed potatoes were a bit bland, but the gravy made up for it. Stuffing and Mac and cheese were good. I would definitely give this place another try because what was cooked properly was delicious so I can see potential. read more

Good BBQ, inexpensive with good portions. The Rib Tips are great. One of those times that cheap rent allows better food value. On a nice street in between a few Irish bar restaurants but it gets lost as a small storefront in the middle of the block. Surprise, surprise! I came across this as a Grub Hub rec and thought the menu looked good and different -- BBQ and Eastern Fusion -- what?! We ordered the food and the people were super nice on the phone -- and I was really surprised at the quality of the food. We tried a little of as much as we could, since it was a new place -- like others, I docked a star because portions were a little small for the price -- but not too bad. I had the fish and chips, which was catfish and it was still crunchy when it came. The fries are thin and though soggy (mostly from takeout, probably) taste substantial, as they're thin cut with the skin on. The mac and cheese didn't look good, but then I tasted it and realized it was as good as mom's home cooking. The hamburger was like one you would make at home -- I feel like the food here is home cooking and not a lot of trucked in stuff and preservatives. I could be wrong, but it seems like this stuff was *made.* We had the pork samosas, which were good -- but I got a cranberry and mango chutney and I really wanted cilantro.
