I don't know if Delivery is different from dining in...but was VERY dissappointed with the order. Paid $40 for very small portions...and hate to be so basic in my vocabulary but Gross really was the best word to describe it! The baby back ribs I paid extra for were decent. The spare ribs did not taste like BBQ but rather had a heavy emphasis on cumin so felt like I was eating an indian spiced meat (I like indian but in this case was in the mood for BBQ so that didn't work for me)...the mashed potatoes were so runny and had absolutely ZERO garlic flavor! (Menu clearly says "Garlicky Mashed Potatoes"). The stuffing tasted and had the texture of someone dunking small pieces of bread in some kind of weird soup and sloshing it together on the plate. Finally, one of the styrofoam plates had a hole at the bottom of if due to the chicken being so hot I am assuming...unless they had it sitting on something hot because the other styrofoam container with the same order did not have a hole in it! All in all, NEVER ordering from here OR visiting in person either! read more

I had the pleasure of visiting this hidden golden nugget in Riverdale. It is like going to a family member's home with its warm feel and wonderfully comforting food. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, which were all finger licking good, lol. The crispy roast pork ribs, sweet potatoes, fried chicken, samosas both vegetarian and meat, as well as Mediterranean grilled shrimp Greek salad, wow was all wonderful. I've been going here for years and I like their food a lot. I've gotten pies a few times for Thanksgiving and love the pecan. But this year I was very disappointed by the sweet potato pie. I threw it in the trash. The crust was some kind of crumb crust, which I have NEVER seen used with this kind of pie, and it was burnt to a crisp. It was so black and burnt on the bottom I don't see how they could have not smelled it burning when they baked it. The filling was horrible. I know what it is supposed be be like and this was bad, just awful. Instead of the dark, wonderful, rich, creamy, orange colored filling it should be, it was kind rubbery and seemed to be a beige, cement color. I don't know what you would have to do to sweet potatoes to get them that color. I have been debating whether or not to go in and speak to the owner about it. but thus far have chickened out because I really like her. I wish I had kept the pie so I could have shown her the crust but I was just so mad I tossed it. read more

My family and I had the sincere pleasure of ordering out from the Barbecue Pit, last evening, and we were not disappointed. What a treat! We ordered chicken, baby back ribs, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, pork samosas,(with tasty and perfectly cooked sauces and dips) homemade french fries, and some desserts. The chicken was moist and flavorful, and the ribs were superb! The ribs were tender and delicious, and not gloppy with sauce. My usually picky 8-year-old ate every piece of his chicken and french fries. I truly enjoyed the brownie and pecan pie--yum! The service was quick and personable. Ronnie ( the owner) was attentive and courteous. The prices were just right! This is another gem of our neighborhood. Delicious, home-cooked food. You can count on it to be well prepared. It is not thrown together like other delivery-foods are. Sometimes delivery can be a little slow, but remember the food is carefully prepared and that takes a few minutes more than some deliveries where speed rather than quality is the standard. read more

Love, Love Love! I just started a new job so have been too tired to cook lately so have been ordering ALOT. This place is hands down my favorite place in Riverdale! Great fresh food at reasonable rates! They know what customer service is too! last night they called me to confirm something that i put on grub hub and i quote the woman said "I just wanted to call and confirm you knew which sauce you were getting... i want to make sure you enjoy your meal". tonight i called to see if my order was en route the gentleman on the other end said "I'm so sorry, we got a bit backed up tonight but we sent your food out and i promise it will still be hot! Thank you for your business"! two minutes later there was a ring on my doorbell. Favorite meals: Mediterranean grilled shrimp, mini veggie burgers and the catfish sandwich. read more

I disagree with Tom A.'s review of the ribs. We just had them for the first time. Seasoning or rub is charred to the meat, but the ribs were not burned. Quite the opposite, they were thick, moist, and uniquely delicious! I was pleasantly surprised with the spinach and mashed potatoes too. The Bronx has BBQ that I didn't know NYC had! So as you probably know Riverdale isn't known for it's food Green space, decent rents and good prices on co-ops and condos, these you will find pretty easily in Riverdale. Great food no so much. The Barbecue Pit is a notable exception to the general eh dining around here. I've been eating here for years and the food is always fresh and well prepared. It isn't fancy but it is tasty. The barbecue ribs are good and I really love the rib tips. I'm also partial to the turkey chili and the turkey meatloaf. If your in the mood for something leafy and green the greek salad is a good choice. This is a friendly neighborhood joint, cozy and relaxed. Service is low key and efficient. Prices are reasonable and portons are generous. I appreciate being offered chips and salsa before ordering and I have to say I love the chips. The salsa is your basic jared stuff. Considering how well the owner and her staff prepare everything else I would love them to use their own homemade salsa or other dip. Oh well no-place is perfect. On the other hand the homemade pies from here are AWESOME. If you're in the neighborhood the Barbecue Pit is a good place to get a bite. You won't feel rushed and you will enjoy the food. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Riverdale. I would go more often, but I know that it isn't the healthiest fare. Ronnie, the chef is a real pro, and has her own style of cooking, making generous use of cumin, and other Indian spices. While her ribs and barbecue chicken are uniformly excellent, my favorites include the samosas (with homemade chutney!), the Mediterranean platter with shrimp, and the vegetable biryani. These are generous portions, and truly a feast for the taste buds. Don't get fooled by the casual ambience. This place is not for one looking for cheap eats ... but it is well worth it! read more

I drive up here from Harlem for there Southern fried chicken, mashed sweet potato and mac'n cheese and their home made sweet tea. Oh and let's not forget about their home made pies!! First of all, I just want to inform you all that the service is horrible. The waitress was so rude and was rolling her eyes and yelling at my party the entire time I was at the Barbecue pit. When I asked questions about the menu she got annoyed and raised her voice at me. By the Ike I finished ordering I felt scared of asking any questions. When we finally got our food it looked like a Lean Cuisine meal that was expired. When I started to eat my meatloaf it tasted burnt and artificial. The Mac and cheese tasted and looked like Kraft. Everything about my plate tasted disgusting. The food made me so sick I had to rush home. When we were in the process of paying and another couple walked in she turned on the lights after we ate our whole meal in the dark. I am not sure if she was racist but it seemed as though she felt we did not deserve kind service and light to eat, but the white couple did. Lastly, the cook does not wear gloves or a mask, he doesn't even cook the food. I saw him popping food out of containers onto plates and into the microwave. I am astonished and upset that I spent my hard earned money on disgusting Lean Cuisine food! Do not come to this horrible establishment! Had a hankering for Barbecue and decided to come here after enjoying a take out meal a few months back. Small, spare place that reminded me of places in Texas. Everything is prepared by Ronnie, the owner, and her team and the home made flavors come shining through. What sets this place a part is the nod to India through the incorporation of spices in some side dishes. I stumbled upon Barbecue Pit a few years ago and am so pleased I did. I'm a big fan of customer service, and it's top notch for a cozy spot like this. You don't need a special palate to enjoy barbecue pit, just a person who loves good comfy food and they nail it every time. The owner is fantastic. She goes above and beyond. And i love that their kitchen is completely open to the guest, you can see all the care and attention she puts into the meals. I was really a big fan of the baby back ribs but i tried the fried chicken and was hooked.
