The stylist then started to shame my daughter for wanting short hair and said young girls should have long hair and no bangs. The haircut itself was fine. We'll need to get it fixed somewhere else. Although this isn't the worst salon, it is far from the best. I was given two gift certificates to this salon, and I badly needed a haircut so I made an appointment with Margaret in April. I had about 8 inches cut off at that time into a short stacked bob. The style was fine, unfortunately the back came out uneven, and Margaret cut the front for a center part ( which I assumed was a misunderstanding) so I had a lot if shorter hair on the side opposite my part. I had to wait three months for another cut to allow the problems to grow out. Appointment 2 was in July, and I asked Margaret to cut a straight bob with a side part. I showed her the uneven ends and explained that I didn't want it that way. Nevertheless she cut my hair with a center part, and she cut the back very unevenly. I only give two chances. She matched my previous balayage perfectly after about 7 or 8 months (I know, a long time!) and was able to warm it up a bit. Living close to this salon, it was always convenient for me to go to, especially when I didn't have a car. Now that I've branched out to other places in the city (with the help of Yelp), I've realized there is much better. I'd been going here for about ten years and not once did I leave feeling happy with my hair. Satisfied, yes, happy, no. For the price, I would expect much more. Margaret is wonderful as a person and the salon is beautiful, but I wanted to have my pin-straight hair cut into layers before and the girl butchered it! They were choppy and, I have very thick hair, so the layers made it all poofy and impossible to work with. Another time I tried to go shorter like a bob, and I ended up looking like Johnny Depp in Willy Wonka! She didn't angle the hair or anything and just left it at a blunt cut and it looked terrible. My mom came here too and no matter what she would tell them to do, she always left with the same haircut she had the last time, even after asking for something different. I've also had up-dos done here and they were mediocre for the price we paid. I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for, but this doesn't make the cut. If you are going to see someone here, see Margaret who is the manager. Any of the other girls are very below her skill level. Needless to say, we won't be coming back here. Again, as a newbie to Jefferson Park, I was looking for a hair cut joint in the 'hood. As a mom of 2 little ones, convenience is key and cost is important. Walked by on Friday and set up a Sat afternoon appointment for the next day. I had heard some friend-of-a-friend notes that this place was pretty good. Kinda trendy for the neighborhood, at least in comparison with the other $5-7-10 places out there. Decent decor and some Erasure playing over the speakers. (Yeah, that sadly means "trendy" to this non-hip 40 year old mom....) "Agnes" (a shortened version of her full Polish name) was my stylist and wasn't overly friendly. I got one "So do you have plans for weekend?" comment and monosyllabic answers to my questions about the 'hood and such. But bottom line, she gave a great cut & style. Cuts range from $30 for short, $35 for medium and $40 for long hair. Same great haircut in my old Lakeview salon would have been $55, so I'll happily save $20 and get a good if not better cut in a convenient locale. Supposedly XOX also does facials, pedicures/manicures, and massages, as well, tho didn't get the deets on those services. So - not fancy, but nice, not cheap but not pricey and again, bottom line - a good cut! read more

I've been getting my haircut here since I was a little girl and it was a tiny little salon squished next to the Lucky Grill. Margaret is a fantastic stylist and a wonderfully charming person as well, it's always a joy to get my hair cut and chat with her. She will always talk with you to help you figure out the best cut and style for your hair, she'll even show you some hair magazines to inspire ideas if you're unsure, and you can always bring in reference photos for what you want; but half the time I feel like she can just read my mind! I've also had manicures done here and the nail techs Kasia and Olena are always pleasant and thorough. I've had my makeup done for a dance when I was in high school and Kateryna did a fantastic job! Agnes has cut my hair a few times when Margaret wasn't available and she is very sweet and an excellent stylist as well. XOX was also a spa for many years but they recently reduced their shop back down to just a salon, it's very stylish and comfortable. They also offer water, coffee or tea to their guests. All in all, the staff at XOX will take good care of you and make sure you leave the studio happy with how you look. They might be a little more expensive than most other places but the outstanding service they provide is well worth the money. read more

I had a facial here recently based off the wonderful reviews here on Yelp. While the service was VERY good and the tech was a very kind lady...I was very disappointed that I was booked for the WRONG facial. At least..I think I was?? I had requested the standard 60 minute facial (per the website is $60) when I called, but when I got to the front desk after the service (and glanced at the time and went, oh wow..a 90 minute facial! cool!) and was told the total was $90...I was shocked! Of course, the push to buy products came on pretty strong too, so I purchased a cleanser bringing my total far beyond what I had budgeted for. Ummm.....what's a girl to do?! I didn't say anything at the time as I am of thought that I didn't want to be rude or that one customer that complains especially as my first time there. So I went home and checked the website and yup, sure thing..I paid for a facial I didn't even request. I'm not sure what the breakdown in communication was, but I will contact the salon and see what they say. It's a cute place, nice spa area in back. The couches are a tad old and ratty in the seating area, and lots of merchandise everywhere. I don't think Tabitha would be here in a heart beat lol, but it could use some updating. read more

I needed a wax before heading out of town on vacation and they were able to fit me in last minute. I had driven by 1000 times, but never been inside. I was pleasantly surprised by how well appointed the salon and the treatment rooms were. They did a great job, better than I have had downtown and much "nicer" salons and spas. Portage Park newbie, wanted to find a local plAce. I had my brows done there and they did a decent job, plus I had heard good reviews, so I went for a haircut. Big mistake. It was unpleasant from start to finish. Stylist was curt, got shampoo in my ears, didn't use conditioner in my long hair (really??) and ripped her comb through the tangles. Sprayed hairspray in my face, scratched me with her scissors, pretty much sucked all around. Then, of course, she gave me the worst haircut of my life. I don't even know how it's possible for my hair to look less healthy after a haircut. She took off 3 inches instead of the 1 I requested. The ends look like the bottom of a paintbrush. I told her what I didn't like about it but she wasn't really willing/able to attempt to fix it a little. Ill never go back there, which makes me sad because it is conveniently located and the owner is really nice. Skip it. I've gotten much better haircuts at Super Cuts. read more

I was looking for a local salon with a good reputation, and I heard good things about XOX. I knew when I booked an appointment that it was not a high-end salon, but I did expect it to be professional. Big mistake. When I arrived a few minutes before my 9am appointment, I was told my stylist needed a few minutes to finish up a color job. I said I did not have a lot of extra time that morning, but sat down to wait. 20 minutes later, and no one had checked in with me, and the stylist was nowhere near ready for me. How in the world can you be over 20 minutes behind that early in the morning when you don't even open until 9am? Clearly, they have problems with their booking and/or time management -- in addition to their etiquette. I didn't even get an apology. I can't believe how unprofessional they were. And while I was waiting, I was looking for a hair style magazine or book to flip through. The most recent one I could find had a feature on the TV show "Hope and Faith". Remember that show? Went here for a cut and my first official color. I had never been here before, but I was heading out of town and didn't have time to get too nervous about it. Gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised! They got me in on a Friday at 5pm and I had just called that early afternoon. I was a little nervous when she started cutting, but everything turned out great! The cut was flattering, but totally easy to maintain (I pretty much just wash and go), I was so happy to get rid of all my gray hair, and the price was, in my opinion, reasonable. I moved to this area almost 5 years ago, and I'm kind of kicking myself for not trying XOX out earlier! Margaret, the owner, is a great stylist. I've gone to XOX for 6 years now. I've gone through different colors and highlights and cuts and they have all looked great. It's so nice to be able to RELAX and know the stylist will give me what I want. The only drawback is the price. I have to go a bit longer between cuts in order to save up that much. But I always get so many compliments on my hair that I immediately start to save up again. read more

She's been with me through short and long, brunette, blonde and everything in-between. I've been coming here for a few years now. Recently, I decided to let my gray grow out. The process has been hard but it looks amazing now. I get so many compliments on my hair now. I appreciate that they did this over a few month period so not to ruin my hair. The lightening and taking color out can really damage hair. It definitely had an effect on my hair but not too bad, I still have my length as well. Love my hair and the girls at the salon are always so nice, professional and kind. read more

I love this place. Like the other reviews have mentioned, I think this place has a very trendy ambience. My favorite part of the decor is the front desk - very neat decor. I have to say it is one of the cleanest salons I have seen. Margaret, the owner, is very friendly and likes to get to know her customers. She even throws a holiday party for her regulars... I have had my hair cut by her and she does a great job. I have had both long and short cuts, and my short cuts are very trendy. She really listens to what I want and doesn't over or under cut/ style. I've also had my eyebrows threaded and some facial waxing. I have also had a massage and the private massage rooms are very relaxing. Overall, I think this place is great and is easy on the wallet. Lived in Jefferson Park for 3 years and always came here--never got a bad cut. Magda was my stylist 99% of the time (I think it was because our schedules just happened to line up; I didn't specifically request her but was always happy to get her), and she did a great job with my fine hair. I always left the salon feeling like I had shampoo model hair. The place is affordable, too--under $40 per cut. I've never been to a super swanky salon, so I don't know if this is a 5 star "as good as it gets" type place, but I have been to other salons of comparable price range and this one is at the top of the list. I went there consistently, until the day that my stylist (Tsoma) literally walked away from me to start speaking with someone else, and never came back. I go here sometimes and I'm not exactly happy with my last visit. I'm not naming the stylist, but I was very unhappy with the results. I was supposed to get my roots done and tone it to a more lighter blonde. I basically asked her to do the same ash blonde she did last time because it was good, but to make it a little more lighter. So after she finished coloring my hair , i thought it was kinda yellow on the top of my hair. The lighting in the place was bad so I couldn't tell. I left and my family and my friends told me I had some GREEN strands of hair on the top of my head! I'm very disappointed and I came here mainly because the price isn't that bad. This isn't the first time also. I know ppl who had a similar problem at this exact same location. Now I'm going somewhere else and would rather pay more for quality. I have been going to XOX on and off for almost 8 years. Margaret the owner is very nice and does a great job with cut and color, I've gone from long to short to long to medium, lots of highlights and all over color. and always happy with the cut. I started getting mani-pedi's there a few years ago and recommend it very much. so clean and peaceful. Kasha is the best. they have a great selection of colors. Yesterday(weds) I was thinking I would get my nails done while I had some time to kill in Wicker Park on Friday and started looking on line for a good salon. After about 5 minutes of reading reviews, I realized that I already know a GREAT salon, so I called XOX and today(Thursday) I got my nails done, my brows waxed and at the last minute decided to get a haircut, which they squeezed me in for. all of that and my total was $102. Katarina cut my hair today and I have to say it is one of the best cuts I've ever had They sell a full range of aveda products and have gorgeous jewelry for sale as well. The atmosphere in the salon is very comfortable and Margaret has a great eye for decor. It's a total treat to go into XOX read more

After having back to back children I needed to cover gray (first time having my hair colored) and decided to change my hairstyle drastically. I found XOX on yelp and selected Margaret for my first appointment. The salon is clean and full of friendly people. I am not scared of change but most hair stylists I have been to are and in the past have tried to talk me out of changing my hair. Margaret was enthusiastic about changing my hair color from dark blond to dark copper/brown. I wanted to try bangs for the first time ever and change the shape of my hair overall. I have always looked fantastic after leaving this salon and receive constant compliments on my new overall look. Margaret understands hair texture, especially for new moms (our hair has a lot going on) and has great suggestions. Best of all, when I get home I can easily style my own hair to look just as good as when I leave the salon. I always go on Saturday and there is usually a little wait for my appointment unless I have an early morning appointment but it's a relaxing place to sit and read a magazine and it's worth the wait. I can't speak for the other hair dressers personally but they all have a steady stream of regulars. I can finally stop trying new hair stylists! read more
