I used to love this coffee spot. I support local businesses in Salinas and when I saw a cute coffee spot with great coffee and pastries open, I couldn't stop going. My mom and I would frequently study here and hangout. It became our go-to place. However, since the pandemic, our views have changed. We no longer go here or support this business because they don't require masks to be worn. None of the staff wears masks and customers aren't required to wear one (however those with actual common sense and decency wear one without having to be told). It's not political anymore. Just wear a mask to protect others and yourself. It's not that hard. Stop supporting businesses when they (and many others) are the reason we're still in a pandemic and covid cases are increasing again. I'm ashamed of this fine establishment due to the poor choices they've made. read more

I've followed The Beerded Bean story for a number of years. The owner would come to the Marina farmers market after Hidden Fortress decided they weren't making enough money there. I would buy his coffee beans (because they are quite good) and he would talk about how he wanted to open a cafe that served beer and coffee. Hey, I love places that serve beer and coffee. When I'm traveling in random cities, I am so excited to find them. So wishes come true, and Salinas has its coffee shop with beer on tap. Because the beer is somewhat secondary. The times I've been in (various points in the day and night), I've only seen one person drinking a beer, and that was me. The beer is Alvarado and Firestone. Good choices overall. The interior is nice. Yes, yes, Rollicks; we all have to bring up Rollicks. There's a reason Rollicks closed, and I'm glad the space has been remodeled into something much nicer. There are a lot of choices for seating and the space feels homey and modern. Wifi is acceptable. Bathroom is (there are two, but one is perpetually out of order) typically clean. Baristas are typically quick. Coffee is pricey, but it's not that much more than Rollicks was and is way better. It's perpetually crowded. I was at Farmers Union across the street one night, and needed to do a quick conference call. I came over thinking it would be quieter here, but it was actually noisier than that high-ceiling, brick-walled bar. It's become a local meeting spot and, as a result, it shouldn't be surprising to find no tables available if you come in on a random day. Generally, there's something, but you may be disappointed and are left having to go to Rollicks slightly more-together cousin, Cherry Bean. read more

Love the spot and atmosphere but the service was terrible. The cashier was unfriendly, didn't even greet me just stood there until I said hi. I ordered a white mocha cold, with no ice and received an iced white mocha. Upon informing her that there had been mistake there was no apology and she simply turned to her coworker and asked her if she could make it again. I went back to wait and when she called my name again I picked it up from the counter and said thank you to which there was no response. Today was my first time and talk about a wonderful first impression. My friends and I came here for a study session. We were greeted as we walked in. We sat down and put our things down at a table and went to order. They were more than happy to explain and going over their options as it was our first time there. They saw that my friends and I were studying so the two workers brought us our drinks to the table!!! This was the best customer service I have ever received at a coffee shop! The Beerded Bean took over the space where Rollicks, a longtime downtown favorite, used to be. They have done wonders with the space, adding modern touches and giving the space a much needed makeover. While the decor, branding, and live music are all great, the coffee itself is simply ok. For a small town, Salinas has a lot of coffeeshops and it's hard not think of other places that do it better in town. Their procedures and customer service could use some help too. I've been here 4 times and each time something was wrong. The first time I went (in their defense, it was during opening) they forgot about my drink altogether. The second time I went with coworkers. I ordered a black coffee, the Chiapas blend. It was meh. My coworkers ordered lattes which were equally middle of the road. The third time I went with my boyfriend and they forgot his order. I don't know how since we ordered together and I got mine. The fourth time I ordered a pastry and then just didn't get it. When I told the cashier she gave me a puzzled look, like I was stealing. This is definitely the best coffee shop in Salinas. The atmosphere is great and inviting. The Beerded Bean also keeps the classic old town feel. I ordered an iced mexican mocha, which was delicious. My friend ordered the same as well as a scone. To be honest the scone was a bit dry but overall this coffee shop is great and would recommend anyone in the area to try it out. read more

When someone asks for specialty milk, one would presume it's not flavored. Why is the almond milk Vanilla flavored?!?! With that being said, I did not order a vanilla almond milk latte, but that what the almond milk turned it into. Suggestion: have ORIGINAL Almond Milk at the bar. Cheers. Love the fact that they are dog friendly! I came in with my dog over the weekend while my boyfriend got a haircut. The young girl that helped me out offered a "puppuccino" for my girl-- that was a big plus for me! So, 4 stars based on that experience and this business being dog friendly. But I have to dock a star because of my drink. I don't like my lattes, mochas, you name it, to be too sweet which I mentioned, and the girl suggested opting for a medium size which would come with extra espresso so it won't be as sweet (I ordered a white mocha). But it turned out to be too sweet. Even my boyfriend, who likes white mochas and doesn't like strong coffee, said it was way too sweet. I probably could've asked them to make it again with less white mocha sauce/syrup, but I feel bad being one of those people. I'm not totally turned off by this place though, I would come again when im in the area and want "good coffee" rather than resort to the chains like Starbucks. read more

This "coffee shop" only sells a small for a pour over coffee. In shock I asked why. Was told "It's our recipe". Ummm there's no special recipe for pour over coffee. Small is small amount of ground coffee beans and a small amount of water. Large is a LARGE amount of coffee beans and a LARGER amount of water...I make it every morning. I gave 2 stars for benefit of the doubt since I haven't actually had anything there. As well for the young gal at the counter, she was sweet and it's not her fault the owners do what they do. The ambience is inviting. Very chill with cool string lights. The friendly barista Brianna was knowledgeable about her coffees. I ended up ordering the Guatemala on the French press. As it got busy and she was taking orders, she forgot about my coffee sitting there in the French press. I probably waited 5-10 minutes. I got the attention of one of the gentlemen's that worked here, James, he was very nice and apologized. Anyhow, he did comment he would make it again if it didn't taste good and apologized again. My review would have been 5 star if my coffee was timely. The French press is great if you decide to do it, extra cost but is smooth and you can taste the quality of the coffee. read more

This is about the Carmel Valley location, but couldn't seem to find them here. The whole place has a very cool vibe, but WHAT is up with the attitude? When I walked in and said hello, neither of the guys bothered to even look up and greet me (the place was empty). Then I told them it was my first time in there, and how great the place had turned out. Not one single word (let alone a smile...god forbid!) from either guy. So arrogant & unwelcoming. I would return again if my latte had excelled enough to make me forget the obvious bad service, but unfortunately it tasted like warmed oat milk with a drop of coffee. Employees with attitude? I am somewhat a regular here, I used to come more before the pandemic. They're iced coffee is really good and I like how they mix the syrup with the iced coffee. The lattes are ok, I feel it depends who makes them -- sometimes the espresso tastes dead. They have a lot of newer staff and a few of the OGs have pervious barista experience at Starbucks or other shops so it's understandable that they'd make even better drinks. By far the best coffee shop; from the overall vibe and atmosphere, to the amazing baristas and customer service, and their consistently impeccably made drinks! I've been on a iced vanilla latte kick since they opened, and switched to their peppermint white mocha over the holidays, and have since been on a caramel macchiato preference, while trying other drinks here and their. Seriously, can't go wrong! Everything is delicious! While it does take a minute to craft such perfection, they're very good about being fast and efficient. Also love the location as it's easy walking distance from the Salinas Court House, and great food places to grab lunch (Burrito King, Portobello's, Villa Azteca, First Awakenings, etc).
