I was debating between 3-4 stars for this review but decided to go for the 3. I was very intrigued by this hotel mostly because of the age of it, seems like a creepy old hotel and it is. Also it is right on the main street of downtown PT so that helped talk my boyfriend into agreeing. When we arrived we discovered there is no lobby which is odd, we found a woman in the restaurant and she went to the hostess stand and checked us in. She was friendly and explained how to get to our room and where to return the keys when we left. Essentially there isn't anyone around if you should need anything when the restaurant isn't open - which it wasn't at that time. So it is very different but we never needed anything we couldn't get ourselves. The rooms are above the restaurant and you access them by the door next to the entrance. As soon as you enter there are two flights of stairs to the rooms and the landing at the top feels like these were apartments they enclosed and carpeted 100 years ago. This added to the charm for me, not so much anyone else. The rest of the intricacies were a complete hit and miss for us, I think the only aspect we agreed on liking was the huge comfy bed. Other than that the door frame was very shabby and even when closed you could see into the room along the edge. The carpet was very thin and the wallpaper was peeling. There were two glass 'balcony' doors that opened up just a little bit that were in as bad shape as the front one. There is no balcony so we just opened them to have the breeze and sound of the water come in. Overall I felt all these oddities added to the experience, yes it could be better but I found it charming for the most part and we had a nice comfortable night. I just would've liked to feel safer about that door. read more

Have eaten here many times in the past and always had an excellent meal. While it has been about three years since our last visit much had changed. First went to their website to see the menu. Seems the menu has been drastically changed since what they show on line. Not one scallop dish on the menu and why not?? Not like they are land locked. Very disappointed that my favorite dish is gone. We ordered the salmon dinner with Dungeness crab and a lobster sauce. The salmon was way over cooked and the lobster sauce, well I guess we will just have to believe that is what it was. The Belmont used to be one of our favorites but not any more. I think that what you order may account for the wildly varying reviews for this restaurant. I would rate the service and location/view a 5. Having dinner while facing out on the bay was wonderful and our server, Berkeley, was very kind, helpful, and attentive. However, I think the view may be similar anywhere along the beach and may be worth looking in to if you want to enjoy the food as well. I'd rate the food a 2. I think any restaurant where you're paying over $20 a plate, the food should be AT LEAST as good as food that you can make at home. We got double veggies and skipped the potatoes, and they looked like they came from a mixed bag of frozen veggies from Costco that had been in and out of the freezer too many times and then overcooked. The steak was hard to cut... so you can imagine how chewy it was to eat, and there were some pieces I couldn't finish chewing or stomach... The prawns were good though, I'm not too picky about shrimp! And the sauce was unremarkable, which I suppose was a good thing. The drinks weren't bad either, again not super picky about wine, but there was no list and no red blends (our go-to fave 'variety'), so we just had to ask for a "Pinot Grigio" and a "Cab" and hope for the best. I'm truly SHOCKED by the 3-star rating for this place! I'm in the industry, and took a group of 4 here. Every one of us LOVED it. I see a few haters gave it 1-star, and I think that's unfortunately pulling the rating down. The service was incredible. Berkeley, our server, was so polite and responsive, and an absolutely delightful young man. The owner, Rick, came by several times during our 2 visits to chat. He pulled out a bottle of his secret wine stash to show us, and we were impressed! I ordered the last few drops of a 1952 port from the menu, and the bottle will make a great little cheese tray when my glassmaker friend is done with it. There was another gentleman who's name I didn't catch; he wasn't our server, but was very friendly to everyone on the patio. The fresh oysters were wonderful - sweet and very fresh. We all enjoyed our filet mignon, done perfectly and you could cut with a fork. Two of us enjoyed the crab cakes, which were mostly crab! This place serves a wonderful breakfast - just a Bloody Mary almost as good as mine, making it one of the best on the planet. I'd have loved to see another vegetable choice with the filet; the potatoes were the only disappointment. Not bad - just mediocre. I'll go back to this place any time I'm in Port Townsend - it's a "can't miss". Great building - such a cool space right on the water. My family and I stopped by The Belmont last week for drinks and a few appetizers. I've eaten here a few times and the food has been consistently mediocre and overpriced in my opinion. That said, the deck is nice and the views are beautiful if you just want to grab a drink on a warm day. My low rating has to do with the three tap beers ordered. All three beers were different and all three had sludge in them, because they hadn't cleaned the hoses. Considering the amount of sludge in each glass, they hadn't cleaned the hoses in a while. The manager blamed the beer guy and really didn't say anything more than that. He replaced the three beers with bottles but there was no 'above and beyond' effort on their part...not even an apology. So, that's a fail on customer service, price, quality of food and cleanliness. There are better places to eat in PT, so next time we'll head elsewhere. read more

We just had lunch at the Belmont, ignoring the 3-star rating. MY, how that understates our impression. We both had wonderful lunches at reasonable prices with spectacular views in this 1880 era building. I had the Crab and Artichoke Sandwich with delicious Clam Chowder and my with had the Baked Dover Sole. The service was also excellent and we're making plans to return with friends for a day of sightseeing and lunch at the Belmont. We're also thinking of a trip here for dinner given our great lunch experience. Can't wait for a warm spring day when we could eat outside on the deck and revel in the views. read more

I have given myself a day to think about this and feel just as disgusted now as I did after eating at this place. I have been in the restaurant industry for over 25 years and have been GM of operations now for the passed 10. I would not recommend this place to ANYBODY! I feel sorry for the staff who has to serve the food this owner has chosen to order and prepare for its patrons! Our server (younger blonde girl) was excellent! That's the ONLY reason this place should even get the star above. After trying a piece of chicken from my daughter's salad (which she could hardly touch) I noticed what looked to be a breast was the consitancy of rubber on the outside and inside was various cartlidge bits, veins, and other particals (like a leftover chicken chunk scrap extravaganza) . I told the waitress, (and told her I would pay for the whole thing which I did without problem) how in all my years I had never seen, tasted or it felt a piece of chicken like this. She said she would tell the owner and left with my daughter's plate burried under several dirty plates. THEN... as we left I watched our waitress talking to what I assume to be the owner as he uncovered my daughter's plate of salad, picked one of the pieces off her plate, sniffed the chicken and then proceeded to SAMPLE said chicken! Taking food off a plate someone has already eaten from, that has been covered with dirty dishes, then eating it to see if it was good or bad??? This is NOT how things should be done in ANY restaurant!!! I am shocked at the disregard for not only his health but the health of EVERY person stepping through that front door if he feels that kind of behavior is appropriate! To whoever you are that I saw do this, you are a disgusting individual and have NO PLACE in this industry sir! There are people who love this industry and the people we serve EVERYDAY! You however, obviously care nothing about the food you serve OR the health of those you're serving that swill to! I hope you change your ways before you make someone ill!!!!!! read more

The seafood linguine is delicious! The thought "I could take a bath in this sauce" came to mind; a sign of a good entree. It's a white wine sauce leaning heavy on the garlic albeit you don't have to eat the chopped bits of garlic but I enjoyed them. The muscles had excellent flavor as well as the shrimp. The clams not as much but that's right on point for clams in my experience. Salmon, and halibut weren't as flavorful but because of the sauce I was impressed. And the side of grilled toast was superb. read more

Went here based on a recommendation and loved it! The old building has interior brick walls, view of the water, and lovely sounds of the '40s. Started with a cup of clam chowder, which was a good decision. Very good! The server claimed it was the best in town, which I hope to continue pursuing, but they're definitely a front runner. For dinner I had the Chicken Dijon with a side of potatoes, and it was crazy good! It's a breaded chicken breast stuffed with ham, Parmesan cheese, and I'm guessing what can only be an angel's tears. Soooo delicious! The server was a funny guy and very attentive to our needs. He chatted us up even when passing us to deliver food to other tables. read more

This place is really weird. Yes, its on the water. But that doesn't make up for overly-familiar waitstaff, plastic tables, bad food and unreasonably high prices. I can't believe I haven't written a review for this restaurant before. We pretty much always come here when we visit Port Townsend once or twice a year. I wanted to try another place in town that had poutine in September of 2013 and I still ordered for take out for home of my favorite dish, the hot and spicy chicken fettuccine, 5 star spice. We have always had great service and if it is a nice day eating on the deck is wonderful. My family has had the burger, crab cakes, sole, Belmont salad, and fish and chips that I can remember. Everyone was always happy with their dish. The hot and spicy fettuccine is all I can order here now. I love it and have tried finding a recipe to make it at home, but I haven't had any luck. Also, this is the oldest hotel in town in response to others reviews on the state of building. It might seem a little out of date and need of a bit of repair, but it is a building that is extremely old and everything adds to the ambiance. I am picky about smells and I think they smell fine. Their fries and tarter sauce are quite good as well as their water. read more

We recently moved to Port Townsend and thought the Belmont looked like a great place. We have tried three times to have lunch there. The first two times we waited at the hostess stand for ten minutes, no one came so we left. Yesterday we thought we would try again, even worse. Two employees saw us standing there and continued their conversation had something to drink and ignored us. Again left after waiting for over ten minutes along with two other couples. very clean, convenient location, nice high ceilings/cool old brick wall and wood floor however, it is not at all a  "hotel" but instead 4 rooms up two flights of long stairs w/ no hotel amenities eg common areas or front desk, not transparent on web site and only learn AFTER making reservation but atypically early check out time and no parking (must park on city streets several blocks away), stated amenities not all in room, mattress and pillows very lumpy, could hear conversations on sidewalk, cars starting etc, curtains not block out light and coming off track, so recommend bringing both ear plugs and eye shades, and yet the most expensive room in town at the time of making reservation read more

Awesome lunch on a beautiful sunny Saturday! Crab Louie was delicious! We ate outside and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.

We were wandering the town and stopped in for some lunch at this place. I am sorta surprised and yet not so surprised at the reviews here. We had some WONDERFUL oysters fresh from the hood canal that were huge and delicious for about 8 bucks, we liked that. I ordered a grilled crab and artichoke panini and my bf ordered a halibut baked something or other. I was a bit disappointed at how fatty and oiled our food was. We were stoked with the oysters, but the rest was a bit heavy for our tastes. As for the server.... the older gentleman from the east coast written about by Ducky M.... ya, we had him too. Interesting to say the least, but he was cool. I liked the inside, it was really inviting and had a great view outside to the water. Next time, I will stick with the oysters! read more

The meals we had were the sole stuffed with crab and artichoke, kids fettuccini alfredo, and the salmon en papillote. The sides were a cheese potato hash, wild rice, carrots and sweet snap peas. From the beginning we should have turned around and found another place to eat. Service was horrible, our spoons were dirty and not just a few water marks, they looked like they had been used to eat ice cream and never washed, they were coated in melted ice cream. The waitress never brought the clam chowder I ordered, which I'm thankful for now. I ordered the halibut and chips, my wife had the crab and artichoke sandwich. The halibut was super greasy, like it had been sitting around for a while. The fries were not fresh and were obviously not hand cut. My wife's crab sandwich was more mayo than anything else and was very greasy. Stay away. read more

Wow, I just read the other reviews and I'm thinking so did the restaurant. The dinner was quite acceptable; the service more than adaquate. Ya see I have this terrible penchant for ordering what the restaurant says it did for the special. Sometimes this means they're unloading the kitchen but often it's what they bought for the evening. In this case they bought it! The salmon was straight forward with a simple caper dill sauce and tomato coulis. The halibut special was fresh but over-sauced. The shredded potatoes with bacon and Ramono really appealed to my German side; the rice pilaf was a no-show. There was a deal on aspargus, but that didn't mean they spent any time on it. The truth is this place could be so much more with just a little more effort. And while we're at it, the decor could use a bit of attention. It's worth a try if you think you'd like a sit-down and a full bar. read more

Went to Port Townsend for a short get away from Seattle and to experience the Saturday Victorian Holiday event. Had a craving for some chowder and fish and chips for lunch. The Belmont looked inviting and they had a waterview dining room. Service was good, food was not. My halibut fish and chips were really sub par. The 3 generous sized pieces of fish were extremely greasy and overdone. The fries were terrible, limp and bland. Frozen oven baked fries would have been better. The Caesar salad, we had was like a salad kit from the supermarket. The lobster bisque was OK, bread was good. Curiously, they served the bread with an odd combination, butter whipped with balsamic vinegar. It looked terrible. The Belmont is not recommenced, there has to be better food than this in PT. read more

It was sunny. We were only a few feet away from the ocean. It was nice. We ordered two side salads the oysters of the half shell and fried cod. Allll were delicious the waiter was friendly and the owner came and had a little chat with us about the area a whales which was nice. New Years Eve dinner at the Belmont was the perfect ending to a great year. Lots of ambiance and history here, I kept imagining people dressed up in Victorian era clothing dining there over 100 years ago. The interior is cozy red brick with big windows looking out over the ocean. I ordered the chicken Marinara; it was cooked perfectly; stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella. It came with two side dishes, nicely seasoned asparagus and delicious shredded potatoes with cheese. For desert we had a hazelnut chocolate flavored mousse which was drizzled with raspberry and chocolate sauce. The prices were fair, and this was the best meal I've out had in a long time and I'm looking forward to going back. read more

Stayed in room 4. First off the bed is amazingly comfy!! The view is beautiful and the room interesting, the lighting isn't the best, no tv, and the shower had good pressure. Also has a loft with really low ceiling. So the thing is we got the room and the owner had called me to let me know that the window had a fight with nature and lost, so we had plywood for one side. The owner was really cool and offered us a 25 dollar credit for the restaurant. Didn't order food but the drinks are delish and the service was good. Would stay again for sure!! read more

We had a delightful dinner at the Belmont. The food was fantastic -- we split a blue cheese lover's salad, the goat cheese linguine, and the banana boat dessert. We enjoyed their whipped butter with balsamic vinegar on fresh bread, and were impressed with the amount of seafood that came with our pasta, especially the buttery scallops, and big chunks of salmon. Yes, the furnishings could be updated -- the upholstery on our booth was ripped, and the bathroom was in poor shape. Our service was fantastic though. I ordered a gin fizz and was surprised to receive a sloe gin fizz. We chalked up the difference in expectations to a generational divide, and the waiter happily replaced my drink. (The updated gin fizz definitely had 7-up in it, a low-class, HFCS-y replacement for club soda and sugar. Not a cocktail place, we'll just say that.) Do check out the grotto though, a neat basement that showcases the history of the place. read more

We just sorta made our way into the Belmont the weekend of the Strange Brewfest. It was lunch time, and it was the first place we could find that would take 8 of us and was close to our destination. I have to say; it was a unique experience. Our server was an older gentleman- profusely sweating, greeted and chatted with me as an old acquaintance (when I have NEVER met the man in my life), and spoke with a thick East Coast accent, punctuated with Mafia-esque slang. Things were looking quite fun already and we hadn't even begun to drink! This server made the best out of a potentially bad situation. It was clear that the staff were rookies. I don't think I saw a server over the age of 20, except for ours. He told us the day had started badly and that he was "babysitting" his staff all day as they tried to get through the Saturday lunch rush. This guy really tried working some magic with a place that definitely had seen better days. Their fryer was down- no fish an chips or french fries with sandwiches. Their hostess was rude and un-accommodating. The Belmont just simply feels like a server cemetery- where local waiters and waitresses go to drown in a sea of unforgiving tourists. It's a bit on the morose side - antique Victorian decor mixed with years of server decay. Food was decent. Surprisingly zesty balsamic-chile salad dressing on an adequate bed of greens. A commendable spinach and artichoke dip. Alfredo sauce for the pasta dishes needed work and clam chowder had a bit too much Bay Leaf. Prices were a bit high, but nothing unexpected from a "touristy" hotel spot on the strip. All of the Belmont's flaws are obvious. Painfully so in many ways. For some reason, though, things just seemed ....well.....good. Maybe it was the beautiful, warm and sunny day in January. Maybe it was the cozy little upstairs bar with a couple single malts well-stocked. Maybe it was the anticipation of our upcoming Brewfest and nothing was gonna start us off wrong. Personally, I think our server was so "seasoned" in the profession, that he picked up on our livelihood for the day and tried his best to make up for the Belmont's obvious scars. The reason I am giving this hotel a poor review is they did not honor the price or reservation I booked over a year ago. I have been coming here for 4 years and book a year out. I received a call today that the hotel now was 70 more a night after I had a confirmation. They would not honor my rate. I explained I was promised that rate. I would not do business with a hotel that does not honor prices or try to make it right. I just made reservations at another hotel. read more

This is way underrated on yelp. The initial ambiance is not impressive but the water front deck offers great views. The beer selection is outstanding. I recommend the hideaway lookout stout on tap. The Caesar salad was perfect and generous portion. The Dover sole with dungeoness crab is absolutely spectacular. Good value overall. read more

The menu was enticing and pulled us in...however, the food was just ok and served lukewarm. ...I had lobster bisque soup which was excellent but lukewarm; the blue cheese apple salad was also delicious but I would have preferred some blue cheese dressing. For my main course I had an appetizer of baked oysters Rockefeller which were good but not great and served lukewarm. My dining partner had a burger with sauteed onions and mushrooms which was about a 6 out of 10 due to the bun disintegrating but he said it did taste good. We loved that it was right downtown Port Townsend, so we could walk easily to most places. There's no front desk. But the website was easy to use, and the owners were easy to contact. With so much on the menu, I was still drawn to a regular burger and fries. Didn't feel like experimenting with a carbonara with Philippine sauce or any of the other standby's "with a twist." Turned out to be a good choice. I like a place with good fries. Skinny and crisp and dipped in a side of ranch dressing. Burger was greasy, and yet, I loved it. Topped with swiss cheese, grilled onions, and mushrooms, it was really satisfying and provided perfect sustenance for a day exploring the military bunkers at Ft. Worden. Bonus that we got a window seat to look out on the water, but why is it that when a restaurant is practically empty do they need to sit people right next to each other instead of spacing them out. I'm sure it has something to do with being efficient with serving them, but it's just kind of annoying. Hate getting grumpy in my old age. read more
