My wife and I stayed here Saturday night, our stay was very nice. Our room was upgraded to a suite which was a plus. The suite was clean, comfortable and had a really nice view. The staff at the front desk were very pleasant and helpful. The doorman was also pleasant and helpful. I recommend this hotel and hope to stay again. Tips for anyone not used to Manhattan hotels: Bring your own waters/drinks/and snacks. They charge $9 for a bottle of Fiji water and almost all snacks are priced between $6-$12. This is typical though for most Manhattan hotels. Also, There is a Spa ( Sanatio ) on 3rd floor which is nice also. YELP is offering $150 of spa credit for $100. read more

Amazing service and beautifully appointed room at the Benjamin. I had the pleasure of staying here during my last visit and was very impressed. Had several great nights of sleep from their excellent beds and pillow selections (one of their claims to fame). One of the more under-the-radar hotels in the city, I think. But that's OK...better for me! Nice sofa, and living room area. Great central location, and good for tourists if you want to easily access the city as it's above the Lexington/50th stop - without dealing with the Times Square crap. I've stayed at this hotel for one night and it is lovely. It's not the cheapest; expect to pay $225+ per night. But the rooms are beautiful and, depending on your room, have nice views. We stayed in a suite, which was very spacious and made it affordable since there were several of us to share the cost. Everything was very clean and I was pleased with our room. I didn't spend much time here but the service was great. Parking is additional so your stay here can get pricey quickly but definitely worth it for a splurge. I was quite satisfied with my stay at the Benjamin. Every staff member we came into contact with was helpful and friendly. The rooms are spacious for NY standards and in a great location. Meaning: far removed from Times Square and close to shopping and restaurants. Having The National downstairs was an added bonus. The thermostat did seen screwed up though. Our room was either boiling hot or freezing from having run the AC in 35* weather. It's an old building and while it was a little annoying, it didn't truly bug me. My dad was staying here by himself and had a seisure - not because of the hotel - at breakfast. The staff took care of him and called 911. After that they were very helpful with getting me into his room, fitting a rollaway bed into the single room so I could stay with him after he got out of the ER, and were generally watching out for him and inquiring after him the rest of our stay. Not the criteria you normally use to pick a hotel but I wanted to be sure they were recognized for going above and beyond. As for actual hotel content, the lobby is very nice, rooms were fine, restaurant is good, and staff is friendly. My husband and I booked an impromptu night on hotels.com at the Benjamin when we decided that we didn't want to return to a friend's house in Brooklyn after a wedding in Manhattan. It was FANTASTIC. We got the hotel for a ridiculously cheap rate of $188/night, $220 with taxes. Unheard of in Manhattan. We showed up with no bags, and asked for everything. We were cheerfully delivered toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, shaving cream, mouthwash, all at no charge. We told the staff we'd just gotten married, and they gave us 2 free drink coupons for the hotel bar, which is very nice. Our room was on the 19th floors with partial views - amazing. The room was HUGE by New York standards. It even had a separate closet area and plenty of space to walk around. There was free coffee in the room. I know they aren't alone in this, other hotels do it also but it's still obnoxious. They also make a lot of mistakes so don't hesitate to ask about anything you don't understand on your bill. WHAAAAT? $14.95/day or $62.95 for five days.. super pricey - Shampoo, conditioner, and lotion smells AWFUL! - Bathroom is tiny, hard to leave my makeup out since there's so little sink space - Used toilet paper roll and weird stains on furniture I gave an extra star for the service alone. I gave this place a big Zero! My fiancé & I stayed for the storm/blizzard of March 13-15,2017 to weather out this huge storm because we reside in New Jersey. On the second day, of our stay I developed these disgusting pupils/red scabies & irresistible itching! I called the hotel after having been seen by my Employer(Dermatologist), who after looking at my rash realized I had a sort of " mites" bites, possible scabies. Once diagnosed, I called the hotel a few times. They Told me that our room (we were staying in) was to be professionally cleaned after we check out on that Wednesday. Furthermore, not offering a different room to make our stay more comfortable. Hence, Wednesday came around and as I checked out @ the front, the staff was very stand offish! I Approached them and offered my card key. Their response, "Anything else?" . I would think twice before staying there! I since have sent pictures of the rash on my neck, hands, wrist as well. To date, not a call or apologies. Having (pictures)and medication that I am taking for my uncomfortable and lack of sleep, no culpability have they taken! But after checking out this morning to the new $30.00 a day fitness facility charge not so much. We don't come to the Benjamin to use the fitness facility nor to get a haircut. Will they charge us next for the hair salon? I don't like the added charge and feel they should inflate their price to subsidize the fitness area or eliminate it all together! So let me tell you about my stay at the Benjamin and why I will come back and recommend that you stay here as well. Short version ========== 1) Pillow menu 2) Spa services 3) Close enough to everything - central park, theater district, etc. 4) Amazing service Long version =========== I booked this shindig as to surprise for my g/f (now my wife) for our 1-year anniversary. The room that I initially booked was too small. The mgmt had no problems upgrading me to a balcony suite instantly and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. The view from the balcony is nice. This hotel is known for its menu of 10 pillows. Buckwheat, Swedish, Water, Magnetic, Full-size body, Memory-foam are just to name a few. We actually couldn't decide, so they gave us all 10. As an after-dinner "snack" I ordered chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne to set the mood. The concierge was the coolest mofo in helping me out. To set up the surprise, he had me give him a wink & a nod when we came down for dinner so that the strawberries & champagne could be sent up to the room without her there. The spa service on 3rd floor is incredible. There is a gym and a block of rooms where you get massage. We got the massage package and it was uplifting. When came back into the room, I attempted to open the window to let some breeze in, and lo and behold - it fell on me. Came out of its hinges and fell right on my shoulder. I called the manager and she gave us an additional night for free. (I guess it's better than a lawsuit). This was right around the time of 9/11 (2005). I get a call in the morning from the front desk saying they need to move me to another room without a balcony. WTF I think to myself? I was promised a room because A WINDOW FELL ON ME. It turns out that our beloved Prezidint was staying across the street and the Secret service took over all of the balcony suites as a security measure. I was furious to the point where I was demanding that he himself call me and explain the situation. (I mean a friggin window fell on me! Have I mentioned that?). They offered to move me down the street to Affinia 50. I told them I didn't want to move - I booked the Benjamin for the pillows damn it! They ended up compromising with me by giving me all 10 pillows to take with me next door (picture the Bell Boy carrying 10 pillows down 50th st along with our suitcases) and a nice balcony suite. As you can see, they are very accommodating and I don't think it was just because of the window thing. We loved it so much, we spent the night after our wedding reception here, and we are definitely coming back for more. read more

My parents live in Manhattan, and I would still consider paying to stay here instead of staying there for free. First off, the first floor is ornate but not ostentatious. High bright ceilings, marbled desks, a poshly dressed valet. I already knew I made the right choice before I even got in the elevator. Despite the fact that I booked this hotel through a discount travel place, I was given one of the 2 rooms at the top floor of the hotel. Penthouse baby!!!! I brought, as Carrie Bradshaw would say in the final season of SATC, "my luv-ah" upstairs with a pint of decadent chocolate ice cream. I was grateful for the kitchenette for supplying us with real metal spoons. "My luv-ah", adorned in the soft, comfortable provided bathrobe, dined on the ice cream, intermittently feeding me as I prepared for our night out. Don't even get me started on the pillow menu. They have pillows for every occasion. Soft squishy pillows, water filled pillows, pillows with speakers that hooked up to your MP3 players, Swedish contour pillows, etc In their need to make your stay as restful as possible, they offer sleep-inducing facials, massages, body treatments, as well as snacks (warm turkey sandwiches, PB&J on banana bread, warm cookies and milk). I did not get the whole resting experience they offered though as "My luv-ah" and I were busy. I didn't take advantage of the spa treatments, but I walked in to ask a question or two, and the spa seems as wonderful as the rest of the hotel. And if you are not planning on resting while you are there, they also have a workout room that is accessible 24 hours a day. read more

After one of those good long football workouts you sometimes just need a steak. I went here with my buddy Sidney Rice in his Maserati. The food here was excellent, the steak is far above average, and the creamed spinach is just amazing. The drinks aren't overly great and they could give me some more alcohol for my hard earned money. The service is where they lost the last stare. I had reservations and yet they had me wait a good 15 minutes. (who's ever heard of a professional mvp such as myself waiting?) This was a perfectly fine hotel. There did not appear to be a business center. I called to inquire about its hours, but was directed to the Staples copy and print shop about 100 yards away. My room was nice, clean, and roomy. Front desk staff and the bellhops were all perfectly pleasant, helpful, and knowledgeable. I was starving when I arrived and the room was sans room service menu, which took about 30 minutes to get. Room service was very good, though expensive. It comes from the National Restaurant downstairs, though the menu is more limited. The service fees were outrageous, but it's NYC and room service, so other than not ordering room service, no other hotel is going to be any better. read more

I was very happy staying at the Benjamin over New Years. Everyone was very friendly. I had actually won a free nights stay and a free pair of pajamas through an Instagram giveaway. The pj company completely dropped the ball and told me I had won at 4am. By the time I woke up and responded at 9am, they had given my prize away because I had not responded. After contacting The Benjamin's lead of marketing and letting them know what happened, they wanted to make it right. I had actually already purchased a three night's stay, so when I asked if I could have an upgrade instead of a night's stay, they gave it to me! It was such a nice room and a great way to spend New Years. Alice, the lead of marketing, also helped me make a reservation at The National for NYE. A five star experience! read more

More than ever, im convinced that its a mistake to head for the name brand hotels in New York. Boutiques are undoubtably the way to go, and The Benjamin is a perfect example-- a refreshing change from standardized rooms and services. They've chosen to focus on giving guests an amazing sleep experience and they do a brilliant job of it, and then go above and beyond by giving some of the most enthusiastic service I've ever experienced. They truly encourage you to use their services many of which are available at no additional charge. Prior to arrival, we were emailed by concierges eager to make our stay as perfect and individualized as possible. I wasnt sure which pillows to select from their extensive pillow menu, so instead I just told our concierge about our sleep habits and problems, and let her make suggestions. When we arrived, several pillow options were waiting for us including a down pillow, a water pillow, a five foot body pillow and a buckwheat pillow. The room was much larger than you'd expect in manhattan, and everything about it whispered-- relax, sleep well-- from the muted white tones to the fluffy linens and towels. Even the lighting bose stereo was tuned to play restful music when we arrived. A sleep assistance menu let us know we could order milk and cookies or hot cocoa before bed (and we did!) and they had lots of spa services geared toward helping you unwind. The room was spacious, and included a pretty large kitchenette with a well stocked fridge (not minifridge), china, glasses, mugs, and silverware, as well as a great desk area. The only drawback? How can any hotel still not offer free internet? The idea of paying 15 bucks a day on top of NY prices for something that should be standard astounds me, and the internet service is never good, even when you do give in and pay for it. But aside from the lack of free wifi, I highly recommend the unique services of The Benjamin. read more

Upon arriving to The Benjamin Hotel, I was greeted by Muhammad the lovely concierge. He happily welcomed me back and swiftly took my bags and made sure my car was taken care of. Okay - seriously... I have never and I mean ever experienced such care at a hotel in the USA. I am American and I travel extensively and have had beautiful experiences abroad with hotels, but never here. Fabulous. Although I must admit I wouldn't be staying here if The Firm wasn't footing the bill. The single room is more spacious than other hotels I've stayed at in NYC (San Carlos and Waldorf). Service staff is very friendly and accommodating. Room service food is great, but, of course pricey (again, The Firm paying soooo) Great location for my purposes - a few blocks from the NY office and great shopping for my off hours. I love the Elemis shower gel they give you every day, although the shampoo & conditioner flattens my hair terribly. The TV clicker leaves a little to be desired - or maybe it's the tv - they don't seem to communicate unless you are standing on your head and and have your arm at a 45 degree angle when the wind is blowing 25mph from the west. read more

4/4.5 Stars I recently spent my birthday weekend here at the Benjamin (August 6-8th). At first, I was worried that we would not be able to get a good rate through Priceline, but our bid was accepted for $140/night. It was centrally located in Midtown, and we had no trouble walking there after our bus dropped us off in Times Square. Upon entering through their doors, the bellman asked if we were checking in and then, without our asking, whisked our bags all of fifty feet to the front desk. As I work in hospitality myself, of course I felt obligated to tip him, but I really didn't want to give him any money. I don't like to tip people for minimal work that I can easily do myself (like the doorman opening the door for me). And he was hovering around, waiting for his two dollah. Thus, my initial impression of this hotel wasn't great. Anyway, we checked in, and the front desk agent upgraded our reservation to an executive king on the ninth floor. For this upgrade we only had to pay $4 extra dollars and some change in taxes. We were assigned room 907. Our room was located near the elevator. As the hotel is pretty small, most of the rooms will be located near the elevator. When we entered our room, I was pleasantly surprised that it was fairly spacious. There is even a little kitchenette, with coffeemaker, microwave, sink, and refrigerator that doubled as their mini bar. Some hotels offer their own brand of complimentary bottled water but be aware that the Voss water here will cost you $7. Luckily there is a label on the bottle itself that warns you before you open it up. We found the bed to be extremely comfortable during our stay. The hotel is known for their "pillow menu" that offers a variety of pillows for people who sleep on their side, backs, and even pillows for expectant guests. The default pillows in our room served us well, so we did not try the other pillows out. The hotel was extremely quiet--we didn't even hear construction or traffic outside, which is typical of NY. We didn't even hear our neighbors or people walking in the hallways. I sleep like a rock anywhere, but my boyfriend is prone to waking up at night and even he slept pretty well, which says a lot about the bed. The radio player is Bose, which is a nice touch (even if that brand is like the Rolex of electronics) but I wish it had an iPod charger. We watched some TV during our stay (Shark Week!) but they don't carry the channels I like to watch so we didn't use it much. I found the remote to be quirky and you had to hold it a certain angle and distance to even get it to communicate with the TV. Internet is available for about $13.95 per 24 hours per computer. We didn't get to utilize this as my boyfriend has a smart phone with data plan. The desk, however, was great. It rolls out so you can get additional desk space if needed. We loved the abundance of outlets at this desk. Typically you have to send outlet sniffing dogs to find the elusive outlet in NY hotel rooms. Not so here--enough for us to both charge our phones at the same time and keep my netbook plugged and then some! The bathroom is nice--not too big or small. Counter space could be bigger, but at least there is room to stash your cosmetic bags, unlike the Grand Hyatt. The shower has good water pressure. The tub itself was clean, and I used it for baths, but the grout along the edge of the tub needs more Magic Eraser. Bathroom amenities are Elemis, unusual as most hotels use Gilchrist and Soames, Aveda, or L'Occitane. Not unusual because they have an Elemis spa here at the hotel. I usually don't take or use bathroom products at hotels but as Elemis is a high quality spa brand I stashed them in my bag. My boyfriend thought the iron was crappy and spent some time cursing at it. Since he does all the ironing, I will take his word for it. We didn't use housekeeping or room service during our stay so I wasn't able to vouch for their level of service. Checkout is at noon and on Sunday we were able to check out with no issues. The bellman held our bags for several hours for free. As the lobby itself is very small, there is no place to lounge. I saw some guests who were waiting sit on the marble steps, while others stood around. I usually saw at least one front desk agent and one concierge in the lobby at all times. There is a side table where they offer lemonade and the daily paper for guests. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet hotel in Midtown. I felt very fortunate to get an excellent rate, especially since the guy who checked out before us was paying $230/night for his stay. Two thumbs up! read more

I've stayed at this hotel 3 times and each experience at check in has been horrible. The reception desk attitudes are rude and reactionary. Don't ask any questions or have any specific requests because you WILL get attitude. The manager of the front desk (Fernando) insists that he and his staff is just their to "assist" check in. The lobby is full of people sleeping in the sofas because they have been waiting so long to get into their rooms. Don't ask to get in any earlier because their standard response is "check in is at 3:00". The Benjamin touts themselves as a world class hotel. I've had better service at a Holiday Inn. In a city as large as NY you have many MANY other luxury hotels that will provide you with the professionalism any customer deserves at the same price or less. I travel for a living and I can honestly say the the Benjamin is at the bottom of my list of hotels that I would frequent again. One word comes to mind when I recall my experience with the Benjamin hotel...HORRIBLE. read more

This is my favorite place to stay in NY. The service is incomparable. I love the pillow menu, room service is excellent. The beds are superb. The first time I stayed, I'd taken the red-eye from SFO, arriving in midtown at 7:30 a.m., with a noon meeting. I thought I'd drop my luggage off at the hotel before checking into my office, and they told me my room is ready now -- did I want to go up? You bet! Was able to have a nice breakfast, shower, and nap prior to the meeting. Plus, they pressed my suit in the meantime! Okay I admit I can be a tough customer. I'm in hospitality and worked in hotel management for both Four Seasons and Fairmont Hotels for a number of years, so I can be a bit picky, but I'm also realistic for what I'm paying for. I also find that treating the staff with a little respect back doesn't hurt either. For me this has all the makings of a great hotel experience without the sky high rates. First of all the location is great, you can walk to Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, 5th Avenue etc. Check in was warm and courteous without being stiff. Sarah, the concierge, made it a truly memorable weekend for me and my family, upgrading my two sister's room and sending me an amenity for my birthday. Again, charming without pretention (if you are looking for pretention, look somewhere else as this hotel is not for you). The rooms have an old style New York feel with modern amenities and they range in sizes. Ours was a corner with a great street view and my sisters were higher up with an unobstructed city view. Other than cleanliness and service the most important thing to me is the bed....and these are amazingly comfortable! Equally impressive was their restaurant, The National. Robin, our server was top notch and the food was outstanding! The oysters, sea bass and short rib were fantastic and the dessert was delicious. A big thumbs up to the chef and culinary team. If a good restaurant is a reflection of the management then Nobel deserves a promotion. He was attentive, gracious and went above and beyond to ensure that we have a great experience. Being in hospitality I couldn't help but notice how attentive he was for all the guests around us. I also want to give a shout out to housekeeping and front desk staff. Extra sheets....no problem, extra pillow...no problem, late checkout...no problem. Bottom line, this is a great little hotel with outstanding service, comfortable rooms and amazing food. Since my partners new business is around the corner we will no doubt be regulars during business and pleasure trips. My hat is off to the General Manager and his staff.....well done! read more

This is not a five star hotel. If it had four stars in a reasonable guide, it would be in danger of losing the fourth. Enough dust to to perceptibly darken the room on the outside of the windows.Air Conditioner scuffed, but powerful. ten-inch black scuff above door handle on closet Enough dust to to perceptibly darken the room on the outside of the windows. Mold, but not heavy, in the shower vent. Dark carpet stains. Many scuff marks on lower walls. Pillows and sheets were fine but no better than any Four Seasons. Mattress was clearly expensive, but not firm, apparently by choice., and the edge of the mattress had collapsed in the spot where people sit while on business calls. Do i really care about the above stuff--not really, but it bugs me when a hotel makes only the effort of a three and a half star, and then claims five star status. Five Star hotels are a unique experience, and it is rude to claim equal service with the people who work so hard to make a five star hotel truly remarkable. read more

I reserved a corner suite with balcony and could not have imagined a better place to stay in manhattan! Aside from what is basically a complete kitchen, the living room, separate bedroom and the patio on the 20th floor, room service from The National is friggin amazing. The staff is super nice and once you learn about using "the force" to open the main doors it's nothing but class all the way. If you're planning on seeing a show, or just doing some 5th Ave shopping, put this hotel first on your list. read more

I read a review of this hotel where they said they replaced their windows to keep out the noise. I was skeptical.... but it was absolutely true!! We have stayed here twice and will come back to this place whenever we come to NYC. I love the pillow menu and the room was super clean, tastefully decorated, and quiet!! Convenient location to the walk to mid town or to the subway. There is a spa in house and restaurant but we hadn't tried them. Maybe next time. Everyone working there was so nice and helpful too. note: a few doors away is a breakfast place that serves inexpensive full breakfasts and lunch. We ate here every morning and it was good, fast, and inexpensive. read more

I have stayed tons of places in NYC, mostly around the Midtown and Upper East and West Sides. I like to try new hotels each time I visit and have stayed mostly in smaller boutique-y type places that are known for being smaller and more personalized than your standard Hyatt and Hilton type places. I admit (with some pride, actually) that I have turned into a bit of a hotel snob since I started traveling for business about four years ago. I can't help it. The more nice places you stay, the more you learn what constitutes a good versus "flea bag" dive. The Benjamin, in a few words, is a really likable well appointed hotel that will satisfy almost all traveler types (well, probably not families that much or maybe I am just saying that so unwieldy whippersnappers stay away from my new-found favorite NYC haunt.) So what makes this hotel so special you ask? Service. They sincerly have SERVICE DOWN TO A TEE. What's more, their beds are like a puffy marshmallows of slumber-y goodness. The pillow menu and sleep menus are perfect accompaniments as well. Yum. And Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. SHHHHHH! Let's keep this a secret, OK? I don't want to tell everyone about this hotel, selfishly, because I don't want anyone to know about it. Did I tell you about that GREAT hotel down the street? Yeah... THAT one. Wonderful hotel for the business traveler. Rooms have a large desk, with printer and fax! What a great touch to have a pillow menu too! One negative - the gym/Fitness area is very small. Staff was very helpful and this hotel's location is perfect - walk to Time Square, Rockefeller Center and my office. If you can afford it I highly recommend it. read more
