Biscuit with gravy on the side
    Kisha F.

When arriving, it took a bit for the host to acknowledge us. When he finally did, he explained he was in the middle of something. We were seated quickly after that since there was no wait. Our waitress was very friendly and provided good service. I ordered the country fried chicken with eggs. I had the gravy put on the side since I don't eat pork. The chicken was very well seasoned! It was just a little on the dry side. The biscuit was a little dry as well. With it's name, you want that to be something that is in high regards. My husband liked his food as well. He tried something different and it was just ok to him. I will say that we've been here before and would give that experience 4 stars. This may just have been an off day. Nevertheless, I would definitely try again.

Growing up in KC, I have been to almost all the Big Biscuits in the metro area. We got a reservation on a Sunday morning and were seated immediately. Our waitress was so nice and sweet. I was excited to try their new breakfast sandwich which was great and my boyfriend enjoyed his meal as always. The manager stopped by and was so sweet as well. This location has a great crew of people that will take care of you.

The Big Biscuit definitely gives chain vibes (iykyk) but nonetheless, it WAS good! I got the biscuits and gravy with a side order of of a sunny side up egg as well as a pot of coffee for the table. This meal basically cured my hangover. Service was great too! We were able to walk in and get seated immediately on a sunday morning around 10:30 am. When we left after 11 there for sure was a wait time though. I don't think I would have chose this place if I was in charge of picking out the brunch spot (no alcohol drinks!) but I for sure wasn't mad. Overall, great food...lots of options and honestly everything sounded amazing, and great service....plus a patio!!

The food was incredible! Loved the potions and the taste. The prices were in alignment with the food and worth every bit. Service was responsive and friendly. Looking forward to returning!!

Yum yum yum!!! While visiting KC I typed in best breakfast near me, and big biscuit popped up first on the list. So I knew instantly had to give it a go. It did not disappoint! I first tried the cowboy grits which had amazing flavor and right consistency. Then went for a scramble, and got gravy on the side with my biscuit. If I would have known the entree was going to be so much food I would have skipped the grits lol. Everything was hearty, filling and delicious. My only drawback is I wish they were in Charlotte NC!

Guess what? The Big Biscuit started in Independence. Yeah, I didn't know either, but it did - and it's slowly taking over the Midwest. This location is popular, which is a good problem. Thankfully, I snagged a spot on the Yelp waitlist before I began my journey, so I didn't have to wait long for a table. The farm-to-table inspired dishes fill a couple of menu pages. Whatever you choose will be served in large portions, so don't feel bad if you take leftovers home with you. My chicken fried steak was delicious, though I don't remember the menu or my server mentioning the extra charge for a side of gravy for my biscuit. Regardless, it was mighty tasty and it hit the spot.

Ordering carry out... a breeze! Close to home.. so a short route round trip! Carry out counter pickup instead of by the door shelves.. theft proof! Thanks for that! Home sweet home enjoyment because these cinnamon roll pancakes is all you need!

You can clearly tell by the amount of check-ins that I have here that it's become my go to for breakfast. The food always comes out quick, hot and fresh. The food keeps me full ALL day. The service is top notch and the ladies in there have begun to know us by heart. Always have good conversations when we sit at the counter. Going on the weekend, make sure you use Yelp to signup on the waitlist before you get there, it absolutely cuts down on the wait time.

Came in on a Saturday around 8 am with a party of 6 and was immediately seated. Pretty large seating area with a small area with bar seating for those that are solo. We had quite a bit of stuff off of the menu and thought all of it was above average but not outstanding. The pros are that it's easy to get a table, even with a large group and the food comes out fast with decent portions. Coffee was pretty good but again like the food, not great. Reasonable prices.

For the time and day we went (Saturday), my party of people were seated fairly quickly! We were constantly asked by several people that worked here if we had everything we needed or if we have been helped. The service was amazing, very informative, and patient with all of our questions. The food looked and tasted great as well and I look forward to my next visit at this establishment! :)

I picked up my favorite breakfast item: cinnamon pancakes. These are the best you'll ever have! Fast service for carry out, no fuss

My wife and I visited on a Saturday morning and were seated immediately. The place is very spacious, almost as if it was a sports bar with lots of TV's hanging on the walls. The endless hot coffee was a great perk. My wife was eager to try their biscuits and gravy, while I was in the mood for something traditional. We were both happy to find exactly what we wanted on the menu. I ordered waffles with two eggs cooked to my liking, sausage patties, and a choice of grits or potatoes. I opted for the grits, which I love but rarely see on breakfast menus. Everything was delicious! We'll definitely be back when we're in town to try more breakfast items.

Man this place hit the spot. The biscuits are incredible with the gravy. I love places like this with great ingredients and food. The severs here are amazing. Multiple servers came to check on us and just ask us what brought us to town. I think that deserves a great review and I hope management knows what a great crew they have. They should definitely be rewarded for their exemplary service.

Situated in the base of a beautiful brick building, Messenger Coffee is a wide open, airy, bright and industrial space featuring all the classic coffees, a great assortment of house curated drinks, along with a solid selection of homemade pastries and other foods plus a good variety of novelties, bulk coffees and a few other items. The space is laid out well with the ordering counter and retail on one side and seating on the other, but it doesn't stop there...their open air industrial kitchen where all the goods are house made takes up over half the space, and is surrounded by barstools that give you a front row seat! While I loved the space, the coffee I got is easily one of the best coffees I have had anywhere...like, no joke! I went with the seasonal Iced KC Sweet Smoked Honeybear and it was absolutely delightful! Balanced, sweet, a tad smoky and tasted like the nostalgia of a honey graham cracker! Perfection. Service was great as well. The barista helped me out with selection, shared details of the drinks and made it a good interaction. Once I tasted the coffee, I knew it was a special spot, so I got back in line and grabbed a koozie so I'd remember far beyond the coffee! Overall, top tier coffee shop that I highly recommend!

To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan's hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain's, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain's chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and they act as the essential pit stop, providing the fuel that keeps the light of inquiry burning bright. To dine at McLain's is to participate in a ritual of belonging. It is a place where the passage of time is marked not by the ticking of a clock, but by the turning of the oven trays. It is a reliable heartbeat in the neighborhood, steadfast and true, offering a reprieve from the clamor of the outside world. Whether one seeks a quiet moment of reflection over a cup of coffee or a celebratory feast that honors the simple, profound joy of eating well, McLain's remains an unrivaled steward of taste. It is not merely a bakery; it is the living, breathing soul of Waldo, a place where every bite serves as a reminder that some things in this life are exactly as good as they ought to be.

Seating might be full, but there's both counter seating in the open concept kitchen or tables on the other side. A lot of people rave about their breakfast burritos or breakfast biscuit sandwiches. My out of town guests love them too when I bring them here. I'm here to rave about their weekend only croissants. You can only get them on Saturday or Sunday because it takes a days to ferment and laminate the dough. The quality of their ingredients shines in even the simplest plain croissant. I'll occasionally venture into the chocolate or almond version. They rival some of the best I've had in NYC, SF or Paris. In KC, the only other rivals can be found at French Market or Sour Rabbit Bakery. I'm glad their croissants are weekend only so I can have them as an occasional treat. I find their other pastries, especially the tarts, biscuits or scones are also lovely. For a baked goods focused spot, I'd say their cold brew is also pretty great quality as well. Usually I'd go to another coffee shop for a fix, but I'm okay grabbing both a croissant and cold brew here. I haven't been for their "after hours" dinner specials, but that's next on my to do list there!
