Very rude staff and service for brunch 6/6/26. It's a shame because it used to be really good

My mom and aunt brought me here as a kid 40 years ago. This was one of their favorite places to eat. I just returned today after decades. It is still an inviting and humble little diner. My son and I had brunch the other day. We were seated promptly and had good service from our waitress. Our good came out in a decent amount of time. I had a pick 4 of breakfast items and my son had their cheeseburger and fries and a coffee. He said his food was good. My eggs and sausage and hash browns were good. The bathroom could be a bit cleaner and the front desk cashier was somewhat rude. But the food was generally good and our regular waitress was nice and attentive. This is probably one of the best brunch spots in mission and north OP. The service is extremely fast and the food is amazing. You might get there and the line looks 30 people long, but they move fast in and out of the kitchen. The inside is a classic diner feel without the long diner bar seating. How I've lived in KC for 8 years and not been to VI will remain a mystery to me. Decor is cozy and retro with an MCM vibe. They have a mix and match breakfast where you can order 4 different things. So my husband and I pulled a silver fox grandparent move and split it. I had the French toast, bacon with a side of scrambled eggs. He had turkey sausage and scrambled eggs. Turkey sausage option was great as husband is allergic to pork. The French toast was both crisp and pillowy- exactly what I had hoped for. Service was prompt and I liked that when we ordered coffee they leave a small Pot on the table. We had breakfast for around $20 minus tip- not bad for a breakfast date! read more

We've been looking for a cozy diner-type of place for a while. FPO read about this place and was really excited to try it out. The restaurant was very clean with the exception of their ceiling fans. It looked like they just recently replaced the carpet tiles and ceiling tiles. The booths also looked recently redone. It was late-ish afternoon and a little on the slow side. We were greeted as soon as we entered and shown to a booth. It was Red Friday and many of the staff had on their Chiefs gear. Sally was our server and she was very nice. Friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items she made helpful recommendations. FPO had the double blueberry pancakes with sausage and a side of bacon and was very impressed with everything ordered. I had the Smothered Chicken Dinner. Because everything up to this point had gone so well, I wanted to like the food more than I actually did. The chicken breasts were dry and needed seasoning. The green beans were canned and mushy. The Texas toast tasted like sweetbread that was coated in a liquid margarine before being fried on a flat top (really greasy). I will say, the mashed potatoes and gravy helped offset the dryness of the chicken. FPO can't wait to go back again, either to have pancakes again or maybe try the French Toast or one of their pies. It's a home style place to go for a quick meal. The service was nice and accommodating to our large party. Prices aren't too bad, but +$4 for a small cinnamon roll was a no for me. I went with the turkey bacon avocado sandwich. And with the side of onion rings it was delicious. The portions were a good size and we left very satisfied. read more

I have been going to this place for many years and have been pretty happy with anything I have ordered. It had been awhile since we have gone out for a breakfast. We went yesterday and I was disappointed to see that they are still using those grimey plastic coated menus and that the condiments on the table did not look too sanitary. Went here yesterday to meet up with some friends. They got breakfast items, I got the Reubin sandwich. Delicious, nice balance of corned beef, Sauerkraut and thousand island dressing on beautifully pan grilled marbled rye bread. All of their breakfast items looked delicious. All the times that I've eaten here, I've enjoyed the experience and had friendly and quick service. A historical restaurant of Mission, this local business serves all age groups of the community, especially families and the elderly. Their chicken fried steak is very filling, and I can get at least two meals out of it! Adding chocolate chips to the pancakes is a delight, and the hashbrowns and eggs are just how I like it. They had a remodel recently, but it still definitely feels like you stepped back in time a little when you walk in. They also have wonderful pies that you can order for the holidays or just stop by for a slice. I hope to keep visiting them in the community for years to come. read more

Ahh, just down the street from my home.. Village Inn. I have probably passed this place for years through days of driving to highschool, college, and now work. Today I finally tried it. For $10.29 I got EVERYTHING i could have wanted for breakfast. Eggs, Sausage, French Toast & Biscuit with gravy. I can't say many bad things besides this place being a diner for people that are well, older I guess. Didn't spot anyone below the age of 45-50 in here besides the waiters. Service was prompt. I keep coming back for the double blueberry pancakes with bacon, good price of $7.99. They also have a nice variety of pie that they will most likely suggest you take a slice home. You just can't go wrong here. The service and food is consistently good. The owners/managers are wonderful and remember who belongs to who when meeting friends for nourishment. My general stop is for breakfast...2 eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns and rye toast. I've never had a bad experience here for breakfast. I've done a few of the early discounted dinners. They are good and right sized. If you're looking for a more up scale meal...this isn't your place. I do wish they'd give the decor a facelift. It's old and tired and showing it's age. After shopping Mission at the nearby Hy Vee, Target, or any of those nice little shops on Johnson Drive, this is always a good place to relax and refuel yourself with breakfast! or a slice of pie which they have a lot of on display at the cashier. I am not sure exactly why chicken fried steak breakfast with a side of pancakes is appealing at 9 pm at Village Inn but for some reason it is to me. If you do come at dinner time it is less busy and relaxed. I have also been here on Sunday mornings where the line is out the door and the wait is 25 min. +. Even with it crowded on Sundays, the service is still friendly and on point. So either time, after church or after shopping come here and enjoy breakfast, dinner, or just a slice of pie. read more

So, as most of you know, I'm not a big fan of concept/chain restaurants, but Village Inn, like Bob Evans, is a clean, higher quality version of the IHOP/Dennys model. Village Inn gets an additional star for throwback value alone. I remember going to the Village Inn on Iowa Street in Lawrence for breakfast for years. Was it gourmet? Oh, heck, no! But it was a nice hot breakfast at a reasonable price with fast friendly service. This Village Inn is a bit reminiscent of the now defunct one in Lawrence which makes me happy. We ventured in recently at the hubby's rather vehement insistence for a piece of pie. The hubby had a piece of peach pie and I went extra fancy and got a piece of pie that reminded me a bit of a Reece's peanut butter cup. My hubby loved his pie and inhaled it in about 60 seconds. My slice was a bit too sweet for me, but was otherwise pretty tasty. Next time, I'll go for a slice of fruit pie instead. Our tab for the two slices was around 4 bucks.Yeah, really.Hard to believe, huh? Our server was very fast. I swear, we were only in there for a total of about 15 minutes and that's only because I can't/won't inhale pie as quickly as my hubby. The banana and strawberry creme french toast is 5 stars! The chili however..probably from a can. My family prefers this place over Dennys or IHOP any day! More expensive than Dennys a little cheaper than IHOP. They aren't willing to substitute crepes for pancakes even with an up charge. It was a little irritating. We were charged for substituting regular pancakes for chocolate chip ones but never got the chocolate chips. They are also unwilling to serve half portions of the French toast which was also irritating. We would have bought a pie but but our bill was already $65 for 4 people's breakfast...a little pricey. The rueben and side salad I ordered I took home with me. It was $9.50, gross, I will probably feed the meat from it to my dogs. In short, if you eat here. Order the French Toast or country fried steak! You'll have to ask for extra gravy, and yes they will charge you. Stick with breakfast or burgers. Also, it would be nice if their waitstaff smiled more although my food here has always come to us quickly. (and for the most part correct.) The hostess was very happy and up beat. If you like Denny's or I-Hop, you will enjoy the Village Inn. What it does have going for it is the food & service. The breakfast is awesome at a very reasonable price and staff were very friendly. I also noticed they have a very nice selection of cakes and pies you can take home with you. Dangerous! This also seems to be where the locals go - yes! If you find those places, you're guaranteed a good meal. Many people looked & sounded local, just enjoying good food with the family or a BF, which is always nice to see. Worst.Service.Ever. After we were sat, our waitress barely greeted us and was automatically rude. I'm vegan, so when I was sub the order, acted very annoyed and made me feel very awkward. After we got our food, not more than a second later she gets out check. She went to go smoke after so We waited a long time for refills. She sat two tables away from us looking directly at our table, and we didn't hear from her after that.
