This is the second time my wife and I have eaten here. Once for Lunch and once for dinner. The service both times was great. The staff is very attentive and friendly. For lunch we sat in a booth. The restaurant was not busy and there was lots of seating. For dinner we sat in a side room because the main area was full. There were plenty of empty tables and a couple side rooms that were empty. The parking lot was really full so I thought the dining room would have a wait but there was ample seating. The food was great both times. I had the Chimichanga and my wife had the Victor. Both were great with large portions. We will definitely come back when we are in the area! read more

The staff is always friendly, and on our most recent visit, our server Carlos was especially attentive--making sure we had everything we needed and that our drinks stayed full. We always order the chicharrones and white queso. The portions are great, and the queso is consistently delicious. The kids had the bean and cheese burritos, and there wasn't a single bite left. My wife and I shared the Sombrero's Skillet, which comes with a mix of beef, chicken, pork, and shrimp topped with chorizo queso--we enjoyed every bite. Food: 9/10 Service: 10/10 The atmosphere is very family-friendly, which we really appreciate. The only critique would be the restaurant's upkeep. We've been to Big Sombrero dozens of times over the 7 years we've lived in Montgomery. As senior NATIVE TEXANS, it is our favorite Mexican food restaurant in the entire state! And, as frequent RV-ers, we know Mexican food! We've eaten at Mexican restaurants all the way from Eagle Pass, Texas to Bonner's Ferry, Idaho! And everywhere in between! This place is GREAT, and everything we've eaten there is top-notch! Good prices, too! Our favorite is the tostadas, with fajita beef substituted for ground beef. "The big disappointment" I wanted to like the place, the overall atmosphere and look at the place is what you would want for good Mexican food. We sat down a little after 3:45 PM on a Saturday and we're able to get seated quickly. The overall attitude and friendliness of the staff was one of the better things about the place Also will give recognition that our server was very good at upsell us everything . However, none of our drinks were refilled, the food was delivered by other people, we had to bus/prep our table, the service was very slow for a half empty restaurant . In addition, the only thing that actually tasted good was the queso . The guacamole was subpar, the rice and beans were not good, the taco salad was disappointing. Two of the three kids ordered tacos and only ate half of one each. They said it didn't taste very good. I tried to buy, and they were correct, it wasn't very good. The other kid had a lunch chimichanga, but we were charged for a dinner portion . Same issue with me, I ordered a lunch taco salad was charged the dinner taco salad . In the end for one adult ordering a salad and three children ordering kid items/lunch portion we were charged $84 before tip . This is not a high-end restaurant, but $84 for three children and one adult adult is a bit expensive. Two of us actually ordered water as well, but I would definitely say we will not be back. Ordered dirty taco salad with beef fajitas. Fajitas were good, lettuce looked as it had come from a bag, and had sat for several days open. The lettuce smelled and was yellow. Had to,us my own lettuce. Also had all American enchiladas with ground beef. They were good. Usually get chips and salsa. Trying this place for the first time as we made the drive out to Conroe to go to a Lupe Tortilla that was non existent. The security was great and our server was funny. The ambiance was nice and was very very clean. Chips are a bit hard but I can overlook that as I'm picky with everything I eat. The salsa was good and the queso was delish. The margarita. Ahhhhh reminds me of Rancho Grande (Big Ranch) before they changed their recipe. The quesadillas are good as well and reminded me so much of rancho grande. If I had to do a blind gold taste test, I'd be in trouble. My husband had the fajitas for one and he said the same. When the fire alarm goes off at your resort hotel and you have to walk down 14 flights of stairs, you do what any same person would do: grab your car keys and go find a nearby restaurant to wait out whatever happens. With that luck in our favor, we Yelped for a local lunch spot and came across The Big Sombrero. "That sounds like fun," hubby said, and so here we are. Happy hour every day, and thankfully we're here at the right time. A jumbo house marg for me and a beer for hubby. Chunky guacamole - it has all the good stuff: onions tomatoes jalapeño cilantro lime. So good we're actually ordering a second round of it (yeah yeah, I know, quac is #extra, but OMG, it's so good) and the chips are super thick and able to stand up to the chunky quac. So good y'all, so good. Hotter salsa (had to ask for it) but it is DELICIOUS- going with the theme of the day, it burns burns burns, the ring of fire! ;-) And the chips are warm, too. Y'all this place is SO GOOD! Hubby's having spicy dirty tacos, I'm going for Chicken Blanco. Food hasn't arrived yet and we're already talking about coming back up to this place. It's only about 45 min from home, but we've traveled farther for good steaks (looking at you, 1836 in Huntsville) so we're not against making the drive for great food. Ok. Food. I gotta say it y'all: HOW IS THIS PLACE NOT ALL FIVE STARS?!? Fresh, hot, incredibly tasty... I don't have enough adjectives to describe how happy my mouth and tummy are right now. The chicken blanco, with double beans, is a savory flood of flavors. The zucchini, which so often is over cooked to mush, is deliciously crunchy and partners amazingly with the white queso (that is so hot, it's nearly straight liquid). It comes with tortillas, and makes an amazing toco, but it's not even necessary. Straight from plate to fork to mouth and you are in for a treat. Hubs has vacuumed up his tacos. I had the frozen jumbo margarita which was a very respectable size. The service was great and the waiters kept bringing out chips and salsa whenever the bowl got almost-empty. I had beef taco plate on their recommendation and was disappointed. I liked the beans. Rice boring. Not enough tomato or cheese on tacos. Wish I'd been asked if I wanted sour cream, avocado, or guac. Very plain and bland. Felt they were lacking toppings for the price. They were filling I only could eat 2/3. Hubby ordered the tostadas and he said they were average. If we MUST have good Mexican food, we choose Big Sombrero. The other ones in the area taste like cheap microwave food. I look for fresh, homemade tortillas (big sombrero needs to work on that), good salsa with warm chips, flavorful meat. This place is good, just not great. I'm Mexican and grew up on Tex Mex food and most places in our area don't have it! So sad. Have to go to the Woodlands or Houston to find it! read more

YOu know... this is a 4 and a half star place, I wish Yelp had half points. I have had a few slight things that I would say they need to work on, but for the most part, we really enjoy this place. I wish they were a little better on drink refills, and noticing the need for drink refills. If I have to ask for a drink refill, that aggravates me. That is something that should never happen in my opinion. All you have to do is glance at a table and see an empty cup/glass, so there is never an excuse for that in my expert opinion. The food is really good, and the service is another one of the things that I would like to see improve. They manage to do just enough in the nick of time to prevent me from really getting agitated, but its always just barely in time. As far as I am concerned, in this immediate area, this is the best mexican food I have had. There are a few other places around that use American cheese, and boast about it, on their dishes. Good place to have dinner with the family! I saw the accusations of a hostess with an attitude but I didn't experience that, I did experience the constant refilling of my water and chips. Not saying it was a bad thing I'm just not used to it, lol. Our waiter was friendly and did a good job at accommodating our requests!! The food, I had the chicken and beef fajitas, and I must say: they were great! The rice was delicious, the pico and guac tasted fresh. My only knock is the charro beans; they were bland and it was mostly water. Enchiladas were good, we've had better but not bad. Their queso with ground beef was outstanding, probably some of the best out there! The margs: the taste was great, they weren't too strong but I felt it after the first one! Unfortunately the hostess, I'll call her "A", was anything but welcoming , friendly or kind. My husband said, oh she's very focused on her job... well she could focus on her customer with a smile and a friendly hello, welcome to The Big Sombrero. Instead she says, "How many? with a look of, what do you want?Then she grabs menus and walks away, sets menus on table and walks away. Nothing about enjoy your meal or have a nice day it is this table ok? Fortunately, our server, Victor, was awesome. And the food even better. We shared an appetizer and the overpriced beef fajitas. The beef was so tough not one piece was edible. I wound up taking the beef home to my dogs. I would not recommend getting the small portion of beef fajitas. Their food is generally good, but I would never order the (over-priced small portion) of fajitas again.
