A pretty cool Boston Pub type place on a rainy Boston afternoon. Very nice atmosphere with a ton of different flags and things from different cultures. Lots of beers on tap and bottles, and what seemed like a pretty big menu. Very laid back service, but attentive. Wanted to hang out for a while and have some beers and the Boston Cream Pie looked good on the menu. When in Rome I guess. After hanging out for a while we ended up getting that along with the bread pudding, because, well you can't really get enough dessert. While the bread pudding was pretty good, the Boston Cream pie was very dry. Had this artificial taste to it and was just not very appetizing. So despite the great atmosphere and all the other things, I really can't give it more than 3 stars. I mean, it's Boston, how can the Boston cream pie be this bad? We went in on a busy Saturday night and miraculously found a recently vacated table in the bar area after the hostess (who was not the friendliest) pointed us in the direction of the bar even though we asked for a table in the dining area. The bartender was kind enough to serve us at the table instead of making us belly up to the bar. We were disappointed to see there were no mixed drink options that didn't include whiskey or gin. No tequila or vodka options. We settled for a g&t...though there was basically no tonic in it. Normally a strong drink is a plus, but it was just too much. Came here in February. I believe this place is just a tourist trap. However, it is a cool looking old school Irish bar in the middle of the Quincy Market area of Boston. However, the drinks are really over priced, and the food is not very good. Guinness is $10.00 for a pint. Wow! I ordered the steak sandwich, and could tell it was some steak-umm type meat. Terrible. My wife got a burger, and you could tell it was a previously frozen patty. Fries were OK that came on the side, but you can tell they were previously frozen. One drink a piece and two meals, came to $70 with the tip. If you're in this area, stay clear of the restaurants. They are only tourist traps and are very expensive. Just stay inside Quincy market, and grab some food there it much better. You will save a lot of money. Or make a short walk to the North End for Italian food. read more

This was a very disappointing afternoon lunch. Wait for a table was extraordinary and our server was slow and inconsistent. Food was cold to tepid when I order a bowl of clam chowder I expect clams, hot soup and tasty soup. Instead the soup was flavorless, and no clams. For an Irish bar I expect it to have more coffee than whiskey and eve the temperature on that was tepid at best. My girls and I stopped by this place for lunch. It was a spur of the moment decision and I'm glad we made it. I had the fish and chips and they were really good. Their tartar sauce was great, but the highlight of this meal was the glorious bowl of clam chowder. Best clam chowder I've ever had! Exactly what I was looking for while in Boston. My friend got curry to dip her chips in and it was delicious. I would definitely recommend it if you're a curry fan. My other friend ordered the calamari and that was quite tasty. The hubs and I always stop by the Black Rose while we're in Boston and there is always a good time to be had! We pretty much go here for drinking and live bands, but we occasionally get food. The food is nothing spectacular, but decent enough. Our most recent visit a couple of weeks ago was as fun as we'd expected, though we did get a nice surprise with the entertainment this time. In the middle of Celtic Clan's set, in an effort to promote a concert the following night, the Irish band The Stunning went up on stage to do a short set. After they were done, Mundy went up and did a couple of songs. It was fantastic! The other bonus to the live entertainment here is watching the drunkards who all of a sudden become members of Riverdance while the band plays! It's absolutely HILARIOUS!!! We watched a girl who was 3 sheets to the wind dance with a full beer in her hand for almost half an hour without spilling a single drip! Talk about skills! My cheeks hurt the rest of the night from laughing so much! Can't wait to visit again! read more

We went 2 nights in a row and had the salmon, fish and chips and the Guinness stew. All were phenomenal. If I had to rate on the hostess staff I'd leave one star. Night one it was as if Eeyore himself (or herself in this instance) was serving us. Not a single smile or greeting or any welcome for that matter. Night 2 hostess was just plain rude and unpleasant. I've eaten here a number of times over the years and have always had a good dining experience. I especially enjoy the potato skins and the burgers! The decor is beautiful, and it's of course Irish-themed. It can get a bit noisy inside as the main dining area is large and open. It's always been clean and tidy when I've been there, and staff very friendly. Wait time for food is a little hit or miss. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's slow-even if there are very few guests. All in all, a solid place to get some good food if you're in the Quincy Market area. read more

To say this is Irish food is insulting to the Irish. This place is cooking out of a microwave. The sausage rolls are tasteless. The Shepard's pie looks like the dog got sick. The Black Rose is a lively Irish pub near (but not on) The Freedom Trail. All you do is walk out the door, hang two quick rights, walk about a quarter mile, and you will run right into the old State House (for non-history buffs - the sight of the Boston Massacre). From there you can just follow the Freedom Trail to a bunch of historic sights dating to Paul Revere. Back to the restaurant. The service was perfect - friendly, efficient but not rushed. The food was great. I had a cup of clam chowder (which I will need to stop eating as soon as I leave Boston because I will gain a thousand pounds) and the crab cakes. I'm pretty sure I have never eaten such fresh crab cakes. My husband got the salmon - if you've seen my reviews from our trip to Alaska last month - you know that he's now a very discriminating salmon eater. He loved this salmon. Our son (also a discriminating palate) got the fish and chips. Gave the thumbs up. Last but not least, there is live music downstairs. If you want to talk, though, eat upstairs as we did. Yikes. Went in at 4:30 and asked for a solo table for an early dinner. Apparently shift change and no one approached my table for 15 min. Made eye contact with several servers and frontofhouse before at 15 minutes asking if there was staff for the tables. That's forever if you're solo. Mixup was explained and apologies made. I asked about the "rueben spring rolls" as i like a reuben egg roll, was told it wasn't classic "transparent" rice wrappers so i ordered. It was bread/pastry wrappers. Wasn't great, and not what was advertised but only wished for a hint of sauerkraut and cheese. Basically corned beef scraps in pastry. Ate some, edible, not what id hoped. As the restaurant filled up it was convivial and seemed to be mostly tourists. Disappointed me after recommending from a suburban-local who knew where i was staying. read more

I visited this establishment on 11/9 with my husband and some friends. We ordered one round of drinks, then I paid and closed our tab with a credit card. After we finished our one round, we left. Three days later I was reviewing our credit card charges, and we were charged MORE THAN DOUBLE our tab. I figured I would give them the opportunity to correct this error, so I called and called and called. This is straight up an old Irish pub - I can't say how authentic having never been to Ireland, but this definitely feels genuine. Everyone here is friendly and will chat with you about pretty much anything - not a vibe you get at most bars in the area. They have live music which sets the mood as well. I dined at the Black Rose two nights in a row as my business guests had mistakenly provided the wrong arrival date. After fighting traffic for more than two hours to get from North Central Massachusetts to Downtown Boston I figured I deserved a beer and good meal besides I had one of my wife with me, so my treat. You should know I am one of those "American by Birth Irish by Heritage" guys. The Irish Pub by the High Kings is practically an anthem in my house so I have been determined over the years to take advantage of every Irish Pub I can find. So we settled in the first night with a pint of Guinness and the Black Rose Burger. The Guinness onions on the burger were really good but the burger, more like a slider, was lost in the bun and toppings. My wife, had the beet salad (excellent) and the potato skins, which can be used as a personal defense weapon they were so dried out and over cooked. Night two was much better. I had the grilled salmon, with jasmine rice and vegetables, perfectly cooked and delicious!! Two of my dinner guests had the Shepard's Pie and loved it! The third, despite my warning, decided both burger offerings could not be that bad and tried the only other burger on the menu; the 40th Anniversary Burger. Without any prompting from me he complemented the onions! Unfortunately, he also said it was the most disappointing burger he has had in a restaurant that was not fast food. The Service is very good and friendly. The wait time on food on the Wed and Thursday nights I was there was very reasonable. They have a good beer and cocktail selection and enough of an Irish whiskey (and others) selection to keep my Irish blood very happy. The atmosphere is traditional (American) Irish Pub and the music is perfect. If and when I return it will be for the drinks and the music. I will try a few more of the appetizers but I am not holding my breath. read more

From what I read while I was there, they do offer irish bands. We were there in the afternoon after wandering the city. They offer ciders of course as any good Irish pub should. Magners is usually my top choice. i am a big cider fan so this was my draw. They have all the normal bar type offerings as well as Guiness and I want to say Harp but again I came in for cider.
