I am kind of embarrassed writing this review. I am a life long Irish American living in Boston and this is the first time I have been there. I usually spend most of my time in Boston getting in touch with my Italian side in the North End. Anyways, it's March in Boston and I guess you have to hit up an Irish joint. This restaurant was bumpin' for a Sunday Funday! There was a live Irish band. Don't come here on a first date, you won't get to know the person across from you. It's a very noisy restaurant. My friend from South Africa enjoyed her mussels and cocktails. I had a cherry coke adult beverage which was wonderful. My popcorn shrimp was meh. I didn't like the batter and the dipping sauce tasted like a fancy Big Mac sauce. Other than that with St. Paddy's Day coming up I believe this restaurant/bar would be a great time for the wearing of the green. I do believe they open up wicked early on 17th of March. Good food, nice staff, and the cool vibe you want in an Irish pub in Boston. Stopped in for apps and a drink on a steamy evening. Vinny greeted us, was super friendly and accommodating. The Jameson wings were really good and buffalo wings had a nice light spice. Our server Deshawn was fun and attentive. As a side note, one of our party left a backpack at the table. The staff moved it after we left and Vinny held it by the door for our return! Great to see nice people in a major City. read more

Not really sure what makes anything a Proper Irish Pub but that's what they called this place. Our tour guide recommended this place to us after our tour was complete and we arrived right around dinner time. We sat at the bar and immediately the people seated around us starting talking to us and were very friendly. The bartender was a nice Irish gal with a pretty thick accent that made it very authentic. You could see a set up for live music but we did not get the pleasure of having any while we were there. The beer selection was pretty good as was the Irish Whiskey selection. They had a pretty good lobster special. Lobster, baked potato and a salad for about $18 and it was pretty good. You could see how old the building was and the rich woods that the interior displayed as it's bar and booths. This would be a stop that we would come back to when in Boston again. read more

Ate here with my wife on December 14th, 2021. I ordered the Beef Stew that came with 2 small pieces of bread. The beef stew came in a small bowl that was the size of an appetizer rather than the entree it's advertised to be. I was shocked that the cost of this meal was $18, and the size was the size of a Progresso soup can. I know that inflation is high right now, but this is in my opinion taking advantage of that fact to really gouge the customer with an explaination. My wife ordered a hamburger that came with lousy fries that were obviously the pre frozen kind. The burger was tiny, and placed in a much bigger bun to give a bigger appearance. It came with lettuce, tomato, pickles, but no bacon as advertised. It too was $18. Yep, a simple hamburger for $18. Its not like this is a new business just getting established. They've been around forever. Doubt that they are struggling as this is a tourist trap located right near Quincy Market. If they had to survive off of the locals they would have closed by now. This is not a fancy Michelin restaurant but a pub that should cater to the working class. A place you can get good, affordable food with a good beer. read more

This Irish pub deserves more than five stars. Their sound system is incredible and the decor is over the top Irish. Service was quick and professional and they have a deal for anyone who wants souvenirs that rocks. Now to the food. We had Smithwicks steamed mussels in a garlic butter sauce. Ask for sourdough to dip in the sauce. Then came the Guinness stew which melted in your mouth. The baby back ribs were outstanding and believe me the half rack is a very very large portion. We got super lucky by finding this place. It was a weeknight and we just happened to go here for dinner. The big surprise was that there was an Irish band that started playing right after dinner and they played the best songs. We had no plans to stay after we ate yet we ended up there for several hours just listening to the band and meeting people from everywhere. The music was tons of fun and the energy in the place was fantastic. The food was actually pretty good as well; I loved the fish in the seafood platter. I highly recommend this place if you're interested in an Irish pub feel. read more

Disappointing! First time in Boston. First time in a Boston Irish Pub - box, checked! Walked all day all over the city sightseeing while same time building up an appetite. We walked past over 50 great restaurants, finally settling on The Black Rose. I ordered the fish & chips...terrible. Soggy. Breading fell off the fish. Wife ordered Bangers & Mash...terrible. It looked liked over-cooked hotdogs on top of lame mash potatoes. I've had better Irish Pub food in Ohio...true story! We were so upset with ourselves, my wife and I didn't speak to each other for the rest of the night. Basically, we paid The Black Rose, $63 for heartache. Let me start with this is still a Boston classic. 6 of us stopped by the past Thursday afternoon and wanted to sit outside. Was seated at a table that wasn't cleaned when we sat. Got the table cleaned and sat for 10 minutes waiting on a server. Ordered drinks and water. Needed to ask for water several times before we got it. A somewhat touristy, but overall good place for Irish food in Boston. The place is very easy to locate but since it is in the tourist area near Faneuil Hall, it runs the risk of not being authentic. I don't know much about Irish food but our group thoroughly enjoyed our quick lunch here. Seating is plentiful and they keep you entertained with live music. When we went, there was funny musician on stage trying to get people to sing along to America the Beautiful, with it being Memorial Day weekend. He was very amusing and only added to our meal. We ordered some plates to share. The mussels and onion rings were average but we were all impressed with the bangers and mash. The sausage was very flavorful and well seasoned and the potatoes were super creamy and fluffy. Saw the beautiful sign of this pub one day while walking around in Boston and decided to check it some day. The ambience is really nice and seemed festive with Irish songs playing in the background. There was also live music. The decor over the bar is nice. We had Shepherd's pie and potato skins. The pie was absolutely delicious! And then the waitress brought us the Boston Creampie for dessert, which was heavenly. We're definitely coming back here again. For the loud Irish music and delicious Irish food. I have been here a number of times and never had a bad experience. The waitstaff is friendly and the beer is cold. The only slight disappointment was the bangers and mash. While it was tasty, instead of the traditional brown onion gravy it was a white sauce. The bangers were a bit bland but weren't hideous. We were visiting Boston for the first time and drinking a beer at a traditional Irish pub had been on my bucket list for years to come. I had been eyeing The Black Rose for days, and on a sunny Sunday afternoon, we finally made it! It was a super cool experience, one of my favorite memories of our trip. With live Irish music seven nights a week, during our visit we had the opportunity to sit at the bar, sip on Boston's very own Samuel Adams and soak in the Irish tunes. I also ordered an Irish coffee, which is made of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar and topped with whipped cream. I was a bit self-conscious and felt it was a bit silly that I've never had Irish coffee before and here I am ordering one in the afternoon. I then proceeded to ask the bartender if he thought it was funny that I ordered an Irish coffee. The bartender may have felt that I was picking a fight, because he was really apologetic! I immediately felt so bad trying to joke with him! I sincerely wasn't questioning him, it was just my Californian humor! I wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to the hardworking bartender (working closer to the cash register/kitchen side) who helped us on 9/2/18 at 2:20pm. Thank you for putting the cherry on top of our Boston trip, we had a great time at The Black Rose. This was the first place we ate at when we arrived in Old Quebec. I wished I had spend my money somewhere else. The building is appealing and intriguing which was the reason we ended up there. Too bad the food wasn't.... poor quality pub food. I ordered frites and onion soup. The onion soup was more like thick doggy gravy and was very salty. An Irish bar in Boston? No! Yes! Yes! So after various attempts to Google / Yelp a good place to get more drinks (to continue our bachelor party) one of the guys we were with suggested we just go here, a place he is familiar with and also happened to have no line to get in. Overall, good choice. The live Irish music put a "jig in our stumble" and an abundance of Guinness, Irish Car Bombs, Magners, and straight up shots of Baileys kept that stumble ripe throughout the night. Our bachelor was able to find all the predetermined ladies to do shots with, and we were able to provide him all of the alcohol required to achieve the goals we had set -- for much cheaper than I would have thought. No food - just a lot of Irish drinking, Irish music, and some seriously speedy bartenders. As others have said - this place is pretty standard on the Irish drinks but heavy on some really nice atmosphere. Too bad it closes down at 1:30, just like everything else in Boston... read more

Wildly embarrassing first date moment, narrowly avoided! We came over to The Black Rose after dinner nearby to catch some live music, grab a few more drinks and talk. We arrived shortly before the music began and were able to score a few seats at the upstairs bar. It seems they not only have live music, but one band upstairs and one downstairs, which is nice. They have a decent beer selection and despite the live music, the place doesn't get super loud so it's still possible to carry on a conversation without shouting. The crowd definitely errs on the younger side, at least it did when we were there. When the music started, I heard a familiar song. I've heard it most frequently at a bar back home where dirty limericks and refrains are the norm. I was glad the band didn't have my full attention because had I shouted out the no-so-PG, vulgar refrain I'm used to hearing, I can almost guarantee I would have had the whole upstairs bar's attention. The only reason this place gets 3 stars and not 4 is the upstairs women's bathroom. The bathrooms are tiny - as in I smacked my elbows on the sides of the stall pulling up my jeans - but that's not the reason for the dock of a star. There was a hole, through the tile and sub-floor, that was about 5" across and 8" deep right at the edge of the toilet. To make matters worse, some thought it appropriate to toss their dirty toilet paper in it. A hole like that doesn't appear overnight, you think they'd nail some plywood over it or something - gross! read more

1 star is to much for this place. 5 of us went in to have a pint for a friend who passed away. We left had dinner at a nice Italian restaurant and stopped back in on our way home. It was slow and the kitchen was closed. We were immediately approached by a security guard who told us our bar stool was sticking out to far. We thought it was odd and a little childish but regardless two of us decided to move to a table, but we're being watched closely. A few minutes later we opened up a box of mikes pastry to try a cannoli we had gotten and again the bouncer came over and was very rude and told us to close the box. That was it, we exchanged a few words and when we were out of the door the security guard stepped on the back one of our friends shoes and pushed him. 3 of our party are police officers and thankfully walked away instead of fighting. I hate to believe this was racially motivated but the entire time we were there we felt like we were being targeted. I will never step foot inside the Black rose again and will reach out to fellow officers to boycott this establishment. read more

It was at the Black Rose that we discovered the signature cocktail for our entire Boston/Cambridge trip... the Naughty Irishman! Our first afternoon drink at the Black Rose was a much-needed Irish Coffee. We'd flown in on the Red-Eye the night before and were feeling the effects of nearly 36 hours awake... we'd just visited Faneill Hall, Quincy Market, and parts of the Freedom Trail and were ready to relax for a bit... Our bartender was super sweet and was literally singing as she skipped around the bar. Her Irish accent was awesome too! The (barely-whipped) cream that topped the Irish Coffees was insanely rich. Wow!!! After one Irish Coffee, I yearned for more. So I inquired about a drink that might provide the same coffee goodness but possibly a bit more sweetness. It was then that I met the Naughty Irishman. Along with the usual whisky and coffee, he included a big splash of Frangelico and Bailey's and another huge dollop of the magical cream. With the same punch of the Irish Coffee, he slid down my throat so smoothly! I think I met my new coffee love! In the past we were regulars at the "purple shamrock" which closed a couple of years ago. The concierge in our hotel recommended the Black Rose instead. We got there early and were happy with very friendly service and good food. We had Wings and onion rings as appetizers. Reuben Sandwich and a cheeseburger as main dish. read more

We came in for lunch and then left without having the opportunity to order. The female bartender was also our server. She promptly took our order but insisted I have an orange vs a lime in my Gin and Tonic because she thought it was better for me. Then afterwards she never came back until we were done. We went here on a referral from tour guide at Fenway Park (BTW great experience for baseball fans. Another review). The Black Rose pub is located very close to Quincy Market. Quaint Irish pub with a great selection of seafood and pub food. My wife had the special, full lobster tail and I had the lobster roll. Both we fantastic... the lobster was boiled to perfection with butter on the side. Nothing goes better lobster than a pint of Guinness. Our waitress was fantastic, very attentive and sat with us to chat about her school in Boston and going back home to Ireland. My family has been wanting to take me here for awhile now. They talked about all of the great food and atmosphere, so we came for lunch and to watch the England game. The beer was great, service was fantastic, and corned beef sandwich was out of this world. Their clam chowder was equally delicious, and I really enjoyed the bourbon bbq sauce with the chicken tenders. My only complaint was that they did not have the upstairs open with all of the tvs to watch the game. My boyfriend and I stopped in here to eat lunch after traipsing around the aquarium and Faneuil Hall all day. The decor is fantastic. You feel like you're eating in an upscale Irish pub. I started off with the clam chowder, which was really rich and creamy. For my entree, I chose the lobster roll. The lobster tasted fresh and was lightly seasoned, which I actually preferred. I love this restaurant so much!! I visited Quincy market and I found out nothing in there is attractive to me. I walked out of the market and I thought there might be something good near the harbor but it turned out nothing there. I wandered nearby the Quincy market and The Black Rose caught my eyes with its lunch special. My favorite Fish and Chips as well as LOBSTERS!!! They provided dished with decent price. I ordered Fish and Chips as well as LOBSTER which costed me 10.99 and 13.99 separately. The Chips is wonderful! Its crispy outside but you can definitely taste the tenderness of potato inside. The lobster is awesome because it's really fresh and juicy. We were excited when we saw they had live music so we stopped in for a snack and a beer. We ordered their "sausage rolls" and wings. The wings were good but the sausage rolls were more like mini hot dogs in puff pastry. Two of the 4 rolls were burnt and hard and the other two were under done. The wings were adequate. Service was slow overall and it took over 10 minutes to get our beer. Would not recommend unless you're just having a beer. read more

We were tired and hangry after a drive to Boston, parking, and a few hours at the Aquarium. Like an oasis, we found this place on the corner and drank beer and ate burgers, restoring our vitality and saving the day. The bangers and mash are also not to be missed.
