We were in town during Valentines weekend and reservations were out the door. We were lucky enough to wait in line at opening hours and steal a spot at the bar. Recommending reservations if possible to get a nice seat, but the bar was not bad. I got the Creole shrimp and grits and they were amazing. Great flavor with large serving size. First meal of 2026 My friend and I had our first meal of the year at Blackbird. We were walking down the main drag and she spotted it. Looked interesting. Open. No reservations needed. So, it's how it came to be. It's the main drag and was challenging on New Year's Day. Not sure if it's always like that or if it was because parking was free for the holiday and everyone was out and about. You'll have to figure out parking on your own because I left the rental a few blocks away in a spot that I wasn't going to give up to look for, hope and pray for another closer to the restaurant. Place was bustling. Counter was full. All tables were packed as they kept turning over as soon as parties were leaving. Service was friendly but like I mentioned, it was busy. Had to wave team members over a few times - but tended to immediately after. Never waiting so long that I would say it was bad. Between the two of us, we shared the brunch Hash and Creole Shrimp & Grits. See pics. Portion sizes look small but the pics aren't capturing how deep the dish went down. Enjoyed the hash as it's not something I eat regularly so it was like a treat. I liked the consistency and how well everything was prepared including the eggs - as ordered sunny side up. The Creole dish seemed not bland but muted. My expectation of anything Creole tends to be spicy and I don't mean hot. Not that it was bad but just for me, could have used a little more kick. This was our first stop when we arrived to Asheville. All the food looked tremendous but we decided to stay with a simple breakfast sandwich. Went to the Blackbird for brunch. Started with a coffee that wasn't bad and for my main, I decided on the Corned Beef Hash. It arrived looking amazing. The portion size was very good. The corned beef was well seasoned and the potatoes, peppers and onions were well cooked. The only drawback was the glaze. We are pretty patient people so we just rode it out. Our server came over with a plate of steak and eggs and apologized that there was a mix up in the kitchen and wanted to offer us a free snack while we waited. But, it did not measure up to expectations. I got the eggs Benedict trio. One with pork, one with a crab cake, and the last one vegetarian (Greek). The pork was like a rock on the edges, which is absolutely from being recooked. The crab cake was just awful. It seemed the same like something that had been cooked more than once. Crab cakes im used to are soft and moist in the middle. This one was dry and hard throughout. The greek style vegetarian one was by far the best one, which is the one I didn't even want. The corned beef hash was dry. The mustard served with it was VERY strong. It was okay, but the dish was mostly potato, which they try to hide by slapping an egg on top. I had the braised eggs benedict on a biscuit, which I liked, but it was missing a bit of flavor or possibly salt. My husband's shrimp and grits were the star of the meal. My mom's egg BLT was good, just fairly basic. My wife and I chose the 6 course tasting menu since we haven't been here before and wanted to experience what the chef had in store for the evening. The 6 course dinner, including a palate cleanser in between costs $65. Less than $10 per course if you include the palate cleanser. What an unbelievably great price for what we you get in this fine dining establishment. Every course was outstanding. First two started off with a tasty shrimp bisque followed by fresh roasted mushrooms with the most amazing celery root puree. Next came the 2 seafood courses, the melt in your mouth scallop gratin followed by a perfectly cooked mountain trout with red rice salad. The braised beef for our 5th course didn't need a knife, it was that tender. We finished off with a decadent truffle medley for dessert. Each and every course had depth to flavor and portioned perfectly so you were completely satiated by the evening's end.
