    This is blue, not mid-rare.
    David B.

I really want to leave a better rating for this lovely spot, but sadly honesty ad dedication to the craft of cooking prevents me from doing so. Let's start with what is great about Haywood Common: The service is friendly and the FOH crew do a fantastic job. Very approachable and lovely group of people. The interior is warm if a bit "live" acoustically, but that's ok. It works. Nice selection of beers on tap and a fully stocked bar. As a non-drinker, I was very happy to enjoy the house-brewed sweet tea. Restrooms are clean, well-lit, and well-provisioned. Ten out of ten for FOH and atmosphere. Now to what COMPLETELY missed the mark: my food. I ordered the Steak Frite (steak fries) and was gleefully anticipating that wonderful mix of seared meat and hand-cut fries that is my happy place. I ordered my steak mid-rare. The plate came out in a reasonable amount of time and I will say the chimichurri was fantastic. The hand-cut fries well prepared. The steak, however, was a total fail. Did I mention I ordered my meat mid-rare? That's 145f internal, which requires a hard sear on the outside. Now, I don't mind a rare steak. But I do find a cold, blue piece of meat...problematic. When I say cold, I mean there was no WAY that steak was 145f internal. The interior of the meat was actually not even room temperature. There was no sear, and barely any grill marks on the steak. There was also zero seasoning on the meat. Salt and pepper on a grilled steak, guys, come on! Basic stuff. I managed to eat about half of it, reserving the other half for my very happy dog. Back to the excellent service. I never return food. Ever. Because I don't want it thrown out. And I worked BOH for my entire culinary career (garde manger, broiler, sauté, grill, saucier, sous, expo, chef d'cuisine) so I'm not about to hassle the line as a paying customer. But I will, absolutely and without fail, provide direct and immediate feedback to the line via FOH staff when they miss the mark. So, I approached the incredibly friendly bartender and asked him if I could show him the plate and what was wrong. He was extremely accommodating, listened to the feedback, and offered a few different suggestions on how he might make it right. I politely declined having the remaining steak cooked off as it had already been cut for presentation and putting it back on the heat would just hammer it. At $23 for four pieces of meat, I would prefer it to be done correctly the first time--seared, seasoned, to temp. He immediately offered me a refund, which I also said wasn't necessary, but he insisted and in fact refunded my entire meal with a genuine smile and a fist bump. This guy is killing it. Again: service excellence. He also said he informed the chef about the problem, but chef decided that he wouldn't deign to actually come out and talk to me, which is disappointing. Stand by your food and own it when your line misses the mark. There's no way I'd let a diner leave my restaurant unhappy with my food. But hey, I guess I'm a proud of my cooking. Maybe next time I'll order the tuna poke bowl, since that's supposed to be raw. TLDR: service: six stars; food: two stars. Averages out to 3. There ya go.

We were thrilled to be able to bookend the start and finish of our weekend trip to Asheville at Haywood Common. We loved their mission of supporting local while maintaining a laidback atmosphere with a unique twist on traditional bar food. We were able to scope out both the "all day" and brunch menus and both offered a variety of seasonal menu offerings. Some of our favorite menu items we got to try were the feta fries, Thai buffalo chicken sandwich, and Thai salad. We also loved their twists on sauces and dressings. Service was friendly and prompt. They were more than happy to make any modifications to accommodate our orders. Pricing was more than fair. We would definitely recommend this local establishment to any local or visitor!

Another fantastic trip to Haywood Common. Did I order the same buffalo tofu? Of course. This time we sat outside and had an order of sweet potato fries to go along with the warm afternoon sun. One of my favorite sandwiches and just as tasty as the first time I had this.

Great vibes while visiting! Enjoyed a beer in their outdoor area. Visited during a weekday, staff was not as helpful with offering up ideas on what to order but beers were refreshing and delicious. The Reuben sandwich was interesting not our favorite. Overall nice to sit and feel comfortable working and talking to friends at outside section and great location for enjoying a beer after hike or shopping locally.

The Thai buffalo chicken sandwich here is phenomenal. Great flavor with the mix of Thai buffalo sauce, ponzu, slaw, and "charred ginger mayo" all atop a perfectly crispy fried chicken thigh on a Hawaiian bun. 10/10, gimme 17 of em.

We love being able to visit Asheville to support the local community and tourism. I really enjoyed Haywood Common's Kale Caesar salad which was beautifully plated and a perfect combo of parmesan, cornbread crumble, Caesar fish sauce dressing and pepperoncini which tasted more like marinated artichokes to me. I love marinated artichokes btw! The chicken was a bit chewy, which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars. Next time I will go chicken-less. Beautiful indoor decor, outside mural and friendly service. I would definitely go back.

Thai Buffalo Chicken or Tofu, Hawaiian Portobello, Brussels Sprouts

The food here is so exciting, with variety and generous portions. I hope to come back someday and try more of the menu! It is quick service where you order at the counter and take a table number. Thai Buffalo Tofu - this was really flavorful and saucy with a great amount of toppings Hawaiian Portobello is a rice bowl with a lot of fun fix-ins. My only critique is that it lacks protein, but edamame or tofu would be welcome additions Brussels Sprouts came in a great portion, easily shareable. It is not overly fried and the maple vinaigrette is a great balance with a hint of sweetness.

Great West Asheville spot to try. This is our first time and was pleasantly surprised. Cool location right off 240 in West Asheville. Plenty of outdoor seating and indoor as well. We had brunch and it was tasty. The chicken and waffles were delicious and the basic breakfast was anything but basic. Side salad tasted fresh as well. Staff were friendly and the inside was inviting. Overall it was a great spot for Sunday brunch!

Kids' first time trying boiled peanuts so we were thankful to find they were the best we've ever had! For dinner we had the tofu wings with tamarind BBQ, tofu banh mi, chicken club, and chicken and waffle. Everything was delicious, menu is creative with options to fit every taste. Will definitely make a point to return next time we are in town!

After a shop at Chlorophyll, we popped in for lunch here at Haywood Common. There is seating indoor and outdoors and although it was beautiful out, we sat indoors. You order at the bar and then food is delivered to your table. I ordered the fried chicken and it was definitely a top 5 fried chicken. The succotash was spicy and so good. I was not a fan of the slaw but the cornbread made up for that. My husband ordered the steak and potatoes. He said the steak was excellent. I tried the potatoes and they were pretty delicious. I didn't get to try the collards as I have a beef allergy and they were on the steak but they smelled heavenly.

I think everything is made in house and it tastes like it. As their name states, they make gourmet potato chips with varying, over-the-top flavors ranging from salt and balsamic vinegar to ones topped with brown sugar, bacon and chocolate. Between the 12 of us we tried Salt & Vinegar, The Corsica, Southern BBQ and The Italiano. I had the Italiano Panini and The Nori chips. Both were totally delicious. The panini came out hot and gooey. The bread tasted great and the chips were so unique and surprising. I will say that they drizzled a little too much red chili aioli sauce. It was very thick and flavorful. However, after a few bites it was too much so I wiped off some of the sauce. But it was really good, and inventive. Everything is fresh and made to order so it did take us a while to get all of our food, given that we were a large group. They told us before we even sat and we still wanted to try it, so that no big deal. And I will say this. Our table was the last to get served and the food was amazing. Sometimes at restaurants the standards fall when they get busy and that DID NOT happen here. They served great dish after great dish. Bags of chips are available for purchase as well. I'm totally kicking myself that I didn't get some to take home. Gourmet Chip is an Asheville gem!

A Hidden Gem for Truly Great BBQ…read more We decided to try Iron and Oak after reading some online reviews, and I'm so glad we did. This place is truly a hidden little gem, tucked right beside a brewery. You place your order outside, and there are several outdoor tables with heaters to keep you warm. Our server also let us know we were welcome to sit inside if we preferred, but we chose a cozy outdoor table right by a heater. It was perfect. My husband was craving ribs, and he hasn't stopped talking about them since. He said they were some of the best he's ever had -- tender, flavorful, and cooked just right. He ordered slaw as his side and really enjoyed it. I went with the pulled pork sandwich, and honestly, it was exceptional. The server asked if I wanted it with onions and pickles -- I said yes -- and then asked her to add slaw on top. She said "Of course!" with no hesitation and then took a moment to explain the whole routine since it was our first visit: where to get sauces, forks, napkins, and how they deliver your food to the table when it's ready. She was wonderful. The pulled pork itself was outstanding -- not one bit of fat, just tender, flavorful, perfectly cooked meat. Truly one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've ever had. I chose potato salad as my side, and it was delicious -- definitely passed the test, since potato salad can be hit or miss at many places. I forgot to take pictures, but trust me: this place is worth the trip. If you're in the mood for BBQ, make the drive and enjoy what I would honestly call some of the best barbecue in Asheville.
