Entered the restaurant and it was empty, however it was a bit of a wait before we were greeted as there was no one at the hostess stand or on the floor. We had to wave down the chef in the kitchen and she was able to alert someone that we were there! Happy that we stayed because the peek in the kitchen we were able to see fresh bread being made and food being prepared that I wanted to eat! After this experience in the beginning, it was all uphill from there from the service of our waitress the big booth seats to the food experience. Years ago, my family and I tried this restaurant and we ALL loved our food. Next time, about 2y ago, my husband and I went, it was crowded, we ate at the bar, service was great and food and drinks were good. The last time, and I mean the last time, I went alone. The place was empty, only a few seniors there eating. my server was slow, and my food was the worse. I spent a small fortune with an appetizer and main entree... Our first experience with Blue Crab Grill. The service was terrible. We waited a long time to see a waitress. Waited a long time to order or get our food and drinks. Waited at least 20mins to get our bill after we asked for it. Maybe they were short staffed. The bisque soup was ok. It was very thick and too creamy. It was 9.00 for a bowl which was only filled half way. You would think you would get a full bowl for the price. The rolls were stale. Oftentimes I worry about restaurants in a strip mall and the quality of the food. However, I was pleased and did not need to worry about a thing. The quality of the food was amazing and on point. Everything was warm or hot as needed. Especially noticeable it was the freshness of every product. I had oysters Rockefeller and they were delicious. Everybody can't do that right but they did... The biggest plus is the price. For the quality that we received they had small and large portions and the prices were perfect for that. We attended today for an event, and so the ambience was a little off because there was a country western live band in the main restaurant that could be heard everywhere even in the event room. It did kill the ambience of what we were trying to do, but, if you'd like that kind of music... Great place to be. The performers were talented. The service was also very good for us because we sat away from our very large party. Sadly, those in a large party waited an unacceptable amount of time to receive their food. My servers name was Stacie. She is one of the friendliest and most attentive servers I have ever experienced. My drink never got empty, she monitored me often enough to know she was there but wasn't over bearing. She made a good experience even better. I started with the half pound of peel and eat shrimp. They were cooked well and served while still hot. Served with drawn butter and cocktail sauce with extra old bay around the edge of the dish so you could spice it up a bit if you like. My entree was eggplant parmigiana with portabella mushroom. Neither vegetable was battered and fried but rather grilled. Served with penne pasta this was a perfect dish. I was expecting a bar atmosphere but this was a very nice place. More restaurant than bar. It is a bit of a higher priced meal but in this case you get what you pay for. I was very happy. read more

We've been here several times and it's always a great experience. We arrived approximately 2:00 on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised that there was live brunch music. The trio was great, and played appropriate music at the appropriate volume for brunch. We sat at the bar and the server/bartender (she was working a station as well as the bar) was timely and attentive. She was knowledgeable and made great suggestions. Updated review. This restaurant is again a solid 4/5 stars. This is one of my dad's regular places, he lives in Newark. He likes coming here for the oysters. Anyway, in June '21, we came here for dinner and had a terrible experience. The place was understaffed and the food was subpar. I basically said I would not go back. I don't write bash reviews here especially on a place where it was good in the past. Fast forward to December '22 & January '23. He insisted on going, for his birthday dinner to get.....oysters. I said okay and and wasn't hopeful. However, we went early and was surprised that there was a bit of a makeover in the main dining area. There was fresh paint and some of the seating areas were either redone or replaced. The menus were updated and they had added some additional options and, had daily specials. The food was really really good on both subsequent visits. The seafood Bouilee I had in December was outstanding. The service on both visits was great. Again, I'm not a "basher" here on Yelp. I'll chalk the bad visit in '21 as a result of it being the height of the pandemic. All restaurants and small businesses suffered greatly and the dining industry as a whole took it on the chin for two years because of it. My wife had found glowing reviews of this, so when booking our Delaware stay, we made sure to be staying close by. It is located at the end of a strip mall, and seemed modest from the outside, but once you walk in, the food smells tell you the story. The food is very good at the Blue Crab, and the service is excellent. The price is NOT too high. It feels like a neighborhood restaurant where you can relax and enjoy looking at the fish swimming in a tank. We came here with a large group and the restaurant was very accommodating. Our server Sam was awesome she handled the large group with ease and was friendly. I really enjoyed my soup and the calamari was great. I also got the crabcake sandwich and I do feel it needs a lot more flavor even from the looks of it It looks bland, but it was plenty of crab little filler. What a hidden gem in a very nondescript setting. I had called earlier to enquire about bar service and the person who answered the phone was very attentive/polite and answered all my questions confidently. When we arrived, we were greeted by the same person (Melissa) who took us to our table. She was again extremely friendly, knowledgeable and personable. We had some questions which were answered without fuss. Our orders of drinks were great - cold beer and equally cold Prosecco. Yeah we randomly stopped by this restaurant in the middle of our drive from Baltimore - Philadelphia, and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food here. Pretty much everything that we tried here was fantastic: Fresh oysters on the half shell, crab cakes, short-rib, lobster mac and cheese, seafood jambalaya, etc. All of the seafood was really fresh and prepared well. The only one that was maybe not up to par were the crab cakes (My boy Bphan makes some bomb crab cakes so my expectations are high). The jambalaya was a bit misleading because it was so soupy that it was basically a gumbo. Still really good though, the spicy andouille inside was awesome. To top things off, the free bread here was amazing. It was baked fresh with some garlic and seasonings on the crust, and some butter to spread on top. I'm giving them four stars because my waitress was very good and flexible and pretty much gave us everything we wanted and check with us many times. Now the food was nice looking on the plate, but the taste was not super out of this world great! The seafood chowder in a bread bowl is OK and maybe a little better than average but not super memorable? My seafood platter was pretty well cooked, but it just lacked real super freshness great memorable taste. The fried soft crab is very good which I substituted and added to my platter. The crème brûlée dessert was pretty standard and the flavor of the custard was average, but not memorable. I probably would not go back again to this place just because the price is outrageous but pretty much every seafood restaurant is outrageous now! I would say if you got plenty of money to spend on dinner it's a pretty nice place to go, but it's not much better than red lobster! One thing that's not super great about it is the atmosphere, because it's in a strip mall with like a Walgreens and a grocery store next door? It is located in a fairly safe area! I was by myself so I sat at the bar and it was a great experience. It was nice to chat with the bartender and learn about the area. I was able to get a combo of fish and shrimp tacos, which was perfect. This is a more upscale location and is not super heavy with college students. I was in there at an in-between time at 4 PM and they were already on the dinner menu. The place did start to fill up as I was leaving. Ended up in Wilmington Newark area tonight I could not resist looking for a great crabcake. The blue crab did not disappoint. Being a Georgia Boy and heading up to the East Coast often when I'm in Baltimore or the general vicinity I'm an absolute seafood lover and look for the best. His words... And I got the two crabcakes with spinach and mixed vegetables because I needed to eat my vegetables. I don't know how I do it but each place a try within 100 mile radius seems to have an excellent crabcake each with its own unique flavors texture but purity to a crabcake. More specifically a Maryland crabcakes if I were to narrow it down. Lots of meat, very little filler even a touch of lemon made these crabcakes were luscious and savory as I enjoyed every bite. our meal came out quick our server was delightful and we were a little late and rushed so we were happy to get the food quick enjoy it and get to our hotel and get to bed. So glad we chose this place and if you're looking for upscale dishes in a small comfortable place this is the place to go. My Husband and I frequent the Blue Crab Grill often. I enjoy the atmosphere but being a the food is Homeade is why we prefer coming here. We usually sit at the Bar and hope Philip is working. He is the most friendliest agent you would ever want to meet. He is attentive to your likes and dislikes and will assist you in good choices to make for either lunch or dinner. One of my favorites is the Homeade Soups and also the Crab Cakes. If the bar is full or we bring other Guests with us then we will sit in the dining room. Terrible experience. They expanded to what looks like double their old capacity yet kept the same amount of staff and same size kitchen. Waited well over an hour for food. However, The Blue Crab Grill was the best I've tasted in Newark. Tonight, I had the Seafood Boille which had an assortment of fresh seafood in a cream sauce, served in a bread bowl. Also, I ordered Alaskan crabLegs with a tomato sauce. Both were appetizers and It was fresh, piping hot, and delicious. The service was good and there wasn't a long wait to be seated or to receive our food. I am happy to have finally found a good seafood spot in Newark.
