A little disappointed with the service but the food was exceptional. Our waiter wasn't as attentive as I would've liked, but we did arrive 45 minutes prior to closing. FYI, when this does occur, I always already know what I'm going to order because I understand that servers like to leave on time. I ordered the breakfast Burrito because it looked amazing on Yelp, but when it arrived it had no sauce. I explained to the server how I was expecting the sauce on top. He just stood there confused and didn't offer any solution. I literally had to go through my Yelp and show a picture from a reviewer. Then the light bulb clicked and and he proceeded to remember. This left me unsettled. It was worth the little bit of frustration though because my tummy was so happy and I was able to take some Togo, which tasted just as yummy. The decor is super cute and cozy. The locals are super friendly. This is a great spot for brunch as long as you know exactly what you want or have a picture. Lol. Rainy day in Jacksonville , so we decided to drive our new Jeep down to St. Augustine to break it in and have an excuse for brunch at the Blue Hen. My goodness this place just never disappoints! We didn't arrive until 1:30 and that was nice as we were immediately seated. Be warned during the busiest hours, there is a wait. We ordered way too much food, as their servings are so big. We started with the fried green tomatoes. I am a fried green tomato connoisseur and let me tell you these are in the top! Lightly battered and firm. Served with a blackeye pea relish that rocks! Huge order of five that we couldn't finish. I always have their mimosa which is huge and tasty. Today's special was watermelon and lime. Very good. Their biscuits with homemade peach butter are amazing! I had a two egg plate with a biscuit, cheese grits and breakfast potatoes. Hubby had the chicken and biscuits with eggs and potatoes. We could not even do half. So much food! Delicious! They also offer local seafood, lots of vegetarian options, and local spices/condiments. One of my favorite places in SA! Go visit! This has always been our "go to" for breakfast when visiting St. Augustine. First time at the new location. Wait time for a table was a quick 15 minutes. The tables around where we were seated were all finishing up and clearing. We had our drinks (and ordered our food) within 5 minutes of being seated. And then we waited and waited and waited and waited. Watched and observed our server wait on and attend to and chat up all the tables of new guests around us and she never glanced our way nor checked to see how we were doing - drinks or otherwise. We literally became invisible to her. We were finally able to get her attention after waiting over 30 minutes for our food. She very nonchalantly said "oh, I'll go check on your food" - and then disappeared not to be seen again for another 15 minutes. At which point we were discussing just getting up and walking out. The table right next to us (same server) was seated after us, ordered, ate, paid and were leaving when our food finally arrived - with absolutely no explanation or apology for the almost 45 minute wait. Just a giggle as she set our plates down and off she went. While the food quality was as good as we remembered from our previous visits - this will be our last! There are just too many great restaurants, with great food, and with much more attentive service in St. Augustine than what we just experienced. read more

Amazing find! We were looking for an old donut shop that turned out to be closed now. Broke out the Yelp 'breakfast around me' and found the Blue Hen. It was a bit of a walk, but absolutely worth it. Arrived around 9:30 and checked in. We were told a 35 minute wait but ended up being called in about 20. My wife got the Blue Crab Quiche and said it was excellent. I'm not a quiche fan but agreed it was very good. I couldn't decide between the pumpkin pancakes and the Buttermilk Chicken Biscuits, so I threw caution and my diet to the wind and ordered both. Both were amazing! The biscuits were light and fluffy, the chicken seasoned and fried perfectly. However, the pumpkin pancakes stole the show. They had that perfect pumpkin-y pie flavor without the overkill of spice. Go check out the Blue Hen. You won't be disappointed! read more

Great place for breakfast in St. Augustine! We came here on our last morning in St. Augustine. It's also one of the only breakfast/brunch places that opens at 8. We arrived just before 8 and there was already a line out the door! The small parking lot was full, but we were able to snag street parking on one of the surrounding side streets. Luckily, we were seated immediately and I had to start with an iced coffee. I really enjoyed that they used coffee ice cubes instead of regular. I got the two Chicken Biscuits with a side of over easy eggs and they were very good! The biscuits themselves were fantastic, I do think some kind of sauce or toppings on the chicken biscuits would be a great addition. My boyfriend went with the Biscuits and Gravy, luckily he got the full-size portion because it was rather small. He said it was really good, though. Service was excellent, our waitress checked in on us several times and we got in and out in only about 30 minutes, though we could have stayed longer if we wanted, there was no rush. By the time we left, around 8:30-ish, there was already a huge line outside waiting for tables. So go early if you can! read more

This spot is a gem to add to your list! Today, I tried the black bean hummus & blackened shrimp & grits. The black bean hummus was really good and came w/ chips, cucumbers and lettuce. The chips themselves are delicious. They come seasoned and enhance the hummus also. The shrimp and grits are also delicious. They come with sautéed green peppers, red or orange peppers and onions. Their grits don't have cheese in them which I appreciate. Can't find many places that make grits w/o cheese these days. The place is an intimate establishment. As a party of 6 we had to split up but we were close together as 4 of us sat at the bar and the other two close by. We were still able to talk to each other. I also had a guava mimosa. These mimosas aren't your regular mimosa in a champagne glass either. They come in a glass they serve soft drinks in which is much larger than a mimosa glass. It was delicious and the best part for me. The hype for me was that it was only $6! IMO, that's a great deal! The staff is also really friendly and were super accommodating to our dietary requests. So far, this place is the best brunch establishment I've visited & will def be back. read more

The shrimp tacos had this white cilantro sauce that was delicious! My date got the Cuban Sandwich and the pork was really good quality. We liked it so much we went again the next day! I liked that they had sweet potato fries as an option instead of regular homefries but they were pretty salty. French Toast was good, you just have to love peanut butter. My family and I visited Blue Hen Café last weekend for breakfast. For a party of six plus a baby we had to wait about 1.25 hours for a table. While waiting we were able to order mimosas from the bar to take outside. Once we were seated I ordered the Corned Beef Hash. The dish was delicious. Smoky meaty thick-diced corned beef was mixed with soft savory potatoes and juicy green peppers and onions and topped with over easy eggs. Very cute breakfast and lunch spot in a residential neighborhood. They have a small parking lot, but it was full so we drove around for a few minutes until we found nearby street parking. We didn't have to wait for a table, but most were full and there was a line outside when we left. I love a good corned beef hash and theirs is homemade, but it didn't quite do it for me. The beef was cut into a tasty cubes mixed with onion and peppers and was a bit on the salty side, or the hash brown potatoes that were underneath were on the salty side. My personal preference for this dish is a finely chopped mixture of all the elements together where their flavors blend. This was more like a corned beef "salad" where everything was isolated and combined with the other ingredients. Overall it wasn't terrible, but not what I care for. Points off for not serving poached eggs, but the scrambled I opted for instead were nice and fluffy. My daughter has the blue crab quiche and enjoyed it, though she felt it could use more cheese. Full disclosure, we are a family of cheese nuts and my wife makes an awesome quiche that has a lot more cheese than you will ever likely see in a restaurant! Coffee was tasty. Biscuits with (I think) peach butter were very good. Service was awesome--friendly and she kept the coffee cups full. Final verdict for my first visit is a solid 4 stars. I love the variety on the menu even if I wasn't a huge fan of what I selected. I would definitely come back to try something else. The lunch salads also sound very interesting! read more

Arriving at the Blue Hen Cafe, you'll notice you're in a neighborhood and that there is no parking lot. Luckily, we easily found street parking about a block away. The place was pretty packed but there were a few tables left. The hostess walked over and sat us quickly. I ordered coffee and my fiance ordered orange juice. For breakfast I ordered the corned beef hash. This meal was huge! It was served in a plate that was actually a large bowl. It was filled with decent chunks of corned beef, crispy home fries, onions, peppers and a biscuit as a side all topped with two eggs which I ordered scrambled. It was flavorful and more than filling. For $11 not a bad deal. My fiance ordered the two eggs, which come with eggs obviously, home fries or grits and a biscuit. For $3 extra, she got two pieces of bacon. She said it was good. Our server was nice and we were happy we ventured out to this quaint neighborhood breakfast diner to start our day. read more

FYI full breakfast is only served until 11 am and they have a modified breakfast menu for their all day menu. This place seems to be an over-hyped tourist trap. The food was sub-par everything was over salted and took forever to come out. Corned-beef hash tasted like a Irish dinner with an egg on top, if that's what you look for in breakfast then by all means this place is for you. The a/c was broken, the weather was nicer outside than in. The staff was all very friendly and helpful and I'm sure they were dying too running around serving food. We walked the few blocks from our Airbnb to this small breakfast spot. We were there early enough (they open at 8am) to get one of the last open tables. The staff was very prompt and pleasant. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with added pork sausage. It was quite tasty and the brioche bun was very soft and fresh - thumbs up. Yummm! This place is so delicious! We went on a Saturday morning so we I'd have to wait about 40 minutes as the restaurant is pretty small. Well worth the wait. We ordered the 2 chicken biscuits with a fried egg which came with this delicious sweeter butter. The biscuits were totally made from scratch and made to perfection. I at them by itself. The chicken was cooked and seasoned very well. We also ordered the French toast with sausage on the side. This was very tasty it has banana and peanut butter in the middle with a side of syrup. The Blue Hen is hands down one of the best and freshest brunch spots in town! My family and I grew up going here for brunch but over the years I forgot about this place. Upon looking for a place to do brunch with my best friend, I stumbled across The Blue Hen again! I am so glad I did because it was worth the stop again! To start off with (not pictured) I ordered the Chipotle Black Bean Humus. It's SUPER YUMMY! It came with pita which was to die for and cucumber. You can truly taste that everything they make is fresh! For our entrees, I ordered the jerk chicken California burrito. It's huge! So if you have an appetite, that's the dish to order! The burrito is full of flavor and very filling. The chips and salsa is fresh as well! My friend ordered the nachos which she really enjoyed as well! Once again, everything was fresh and hot! The vibe of The Blue Hen is great! It's quaint and beautiful right off of MLK Ave. great spot for brunch, meetings, family time, and so much more! This restaurant has a quaint, cute and homey ambiance to it. It's very pretty inside. In terms of the food, it's absolutely delicious and arrives with amazing speed. When I arrived, the food arrived for my party of four within fifteen minutes of ordering it. Quality is not sacrificed at all for the sake of speed, though. The biscuits were delicious, my fried egg was nice and runny as I wanted it, everything was spot on. Full stop. The food won't disappoint you. My sister found her chicken to be slightly salty, but that sort of thing comes down to personal preference. Also, the portions are very hearty, so arrive on an empty stomach. The service was polite and professional, teetering on the verge of friendly. The server brought us our food quickly and regularly checked on us. I'll give them an A- for the service. It's nearly perfect. Friendly would've put it over the top for me, but the service is still great. Window seating may be available if you get there early, but there's enough windows in the place to be able to look out the window from nearly any table. It's nice on that respect. Parking is a bit of an issue in terms of arriving here. The on-site parking is extremely limited if there is any at all. You will most likely have to park on a side street when you arrive, so get there early if you're arriving for breakfast. It gets very busy very quickly, so the earlier the better. I'm pretty sure that they don't do reservations, so bear that in mind. The only ding that I have for this place is that it is a maskless environment, meaning that the staff do not wear masks. This is inconsistent with current CDC guidelines, but I've learned to tolerate it, as fewer and fewer restaurants are currently masking up. There's a tiny amount of tables that do offer some distancing, but if you arrive late, you're going to be in some tight quarters right next to people. If you want a distanced table, arrive as early as possible. Final verdict? It's a great establishment for breakfast and/or brunch based on my breakfast experience. Service is good and food is fantastic. I recommend it, with the caveat that there's no masking going on, so bear that in mind if that's an issue for you. We're it not for that, I would've given them five stars. So if your Covid comfort level is there, this place will not disappoint! read more

Went to St. Augustine on a trip for my girlfriends birthday and this was one of the places she had selected on her careful curated itinerary. The place definitely didn't disappoint. I ordered the Blue Crab quiche, which on its own I would rate 5 stars. It was very subtle in flavor, which I appreciate, and loaded with crabmeat. Very cheap for the quality and amount. It came with crispy home fries, a biscuit with delicious peach butter; and a salad. My girl got the shrimp and grits, which was good, but was very different from mine and loaded with intense flavor. I liked it, but it was no comparison to my favorite shrimp and grits that we get in Miami at Blue Collar which is the most delicious shrimp and grits I've ever tasted.
