Food and service were great. Had the lunch special, 1/2 garlic Po Boy with salad and 1/2 Gyro with salad. Po Boy may be the best I've ever had. Salad large and not your run of the meal dinner salad. Of all the thousands of restaurants in the Valley, the Blue Onion is a standout. They specialize in flatbreads: pizza, sandwiches and wraps. It's not typical of the Valley where Tex/Mex prevails in abundance. Here, You can get a wide variety, including Mexican food. My wife and I had a list of places we wanted eat at in the Valley and The Blue Onion was at the top of the list. We ate there yesterday at lunch and it was as good as we remembered. She had the fajita salad (which was huge!) and I had the pork tenderloin poor boy with my favorite side, black bean salad. I can't wait to go back and try the fajita poor boy. Tried this place on a couple of occasions hoping that perhaps it was just a bad day the first time i went. Nope! It is genuinely horrible. The bartender was clueless about the types of drinks they serve. He couldn't get it right which was strange considering how arrogantly he portrayed himself. I finally had to settle on a drink that was way too warm and outright despicable. The food was nowhere near as good as some people suggest in their reviews. The calzone was soggy upon arrival and turning it over resulted in a near gush of liquids that literally flooded the plate it was served on. It made the bread unpalatable. When I requested that the calzone be remade the waitress (Mariela if i remember her name from the ticket) had a poor attitude and tried to insist that it was done correctly. Lady, if i didn't like it I expect for you to fix it, not insist that it is fine! I requested to talk to the manager but they were no help at all. They kept saying the manager (who I found out later was the supposed owner) was "busy." I went towards the back to see if maybe I could find a manager only to find some tiny little dark skinned girl sitting on the area where food was also being served. DISGUSTING!!!!! Your rear end should NOT be plopped anywhere near food! This place is poorly run with bad drinks, bad food and horrendous service. Food is decent, especially the appetizer (flat bread with dips, go for the shrimp bagna and artichoke dip). The wraps are decent as well when you don't get a beef fajita wrap that is full of connective tissue which has happened to me. I don't recommend the pizza, they seem to use the same dough from their flat breads and it's meh. Their chili is nothing great, not much flavor to it. Hater In Da House! I went to this spot with a friend who spoke very highly of it. I was NOT impressed @ all, overpriced and kinda whack. Sierra Nevada on tap = It was flat/nasty, didn't want to complain in front of friend. Gyro = Huge pita, 3 strips of protein. NOT a deal. Tzaziki Sauce = It was watery, and green. Peel the cucumbers, pure laziness. Sides = Like Bex, I was never given a choice. Potato salad tasted like plastic, black beans I didn't try they looked dry/old. I've been coming to the Blue Onion for well over a year. It used to be a walk from my hotel room, but now I've got to travel there and it's well worth the wait. So what's good about it. The owners, they've brought together one of the best and unique menu's in the valley. Their daily meal in the bowl is fantastic. The wait staff has always been friendly once you have gotten to known them and that is a weakness here they need to be a little more friendly up front. But the food, is amazing, good, and never gets boring. They do a great job of working with your allergies also. read more

went here the other day and i ordered a feta shrimp flatbread with hummus spread in the inside. This is usually what i order when i order take out for lunch. At first waitress tells me that they dont do that, i said yes they do, just had it the other day. Oh man I miss this place! When I lived in the Valley I visited the Blue Onion about once a week (for two years straight). My friends and I just ordered the 3 dip sampler and extra flatbread. Every time. It is that good! The goat cheese/ garlic, portabella mushroom, and roasted red pepper dips were my favorite. Amazing flavors! Well this restaurant has good and bad. The margarita was excellent and the beer selection amazing. The food was good and our waiter was good. The inside is rundown, waitstaff we're wearing sloppy blue jeans and t shirts. The manager sat at a table in the dining room wearing a toque monopolizing the staff. This place is excellent and they make everything from scratch. Mario is a good waiter and very friendly and attentive.The hummus is amazing with the flatbread and their pizza is wonderful. Another exciting treat is the fact they brew beer in house and it's IPA. I'm very impressed. The only downside I found was the issue with small restaurants of running out of things. My thought is don't run out of anything ever ever ever. This is the ultimate no no. I would come back for sure as overall I was quite pleased. I came back again, and this time they really pissed me off, the waitress was horrible and they were out of gumbo. So if you want to have food here it's really hit and miss if they will actually have what you want. Come here if you feel adventurous to try different things don't come here if you actually want something specific as they will likely not have it. I'll likely never come back here as it is far too inconsistent and I'm over it. I tried it a third time and everything was great food wise but then I went to the beer and they stopped service 5 minutes before I got into the bar. They served one time and now nothing. Just had lunch here and we'll be back! It was my second visit and I think it was better than the first. Gyro was really tasty! The flat bread here is fantastic! Chicken salad with balsamic... Phenomenal. And, onion rings- hot and crispy! A nice treat. I would recommend the house brews too- I tried both the "Brown Poppy" and the "Seaman's Porter" The brown IPA, while not so hoppy, was delicious. If you like local beer, try these! read more

How lucky am I? Stay at Holiday Inn Express in Weslaco and I end up right next to this place that serves great food, craft beers and they even make their own beers! Server was great and helped me through menu and then started talking craft beer and how they recently started making their own in-house.
