Just moved to the area and was looking a place with good Thai food. Seeing the amount of stars this place got and how some people raved about the pad Thai here, made me want to try it. Ordered the fried squid and the regular portion of chicken Pad Thai level 2 spice, which came with an egg roll. If you're going to come here for lunch, and don't like eating left over, I recommend getting the lunch portion of chicken pad Thai. The lunch portion comes with a small cute salad, egg roll, and a good portion of chicken pad Thai with the bean sprouts on the side. The fried squid we got was very soggy which was a little disappointing. Then it got more disappointing when whad more fried onions and carrots compared to the amount of fried squid on the serving plate. The chicken pad Thai was ok in my opinion. Not sure what everyone's raving about because my noodles were all over cooked so it was a little difficult to enjoy. I may need to come back here one more time to see if anything changed and to bump up my rating or to see if the food usually like this. read more

Stopped by The Blue Rat in downtown Garland after the initial place we were trying to eat dinner at had a 2.5+ hour wait on a Friday night. This was recommended by some locals in the park when we were trying to figure out what our next move would be, and we thought -- why not? My husband and I got the soft spring rolls with shrimp and the corn fritters to start, and then we split two entrees: the khao man gai (Thailand's version of Hainanese chicken rice) and the khao soi (yellow curry noodles) with tofu. The fritters were pretty dry/mostly batter, mostly just a vehicle for the sauce they came with. The spring rolls were very loosely packed, so every bite we lost some of the filling to the plate and had to sop it up with our hands. The peanut sauce that came with it was also pretty tasty, though! The khao soi was quite delicious and definitely packed a lot of flavor and heat (we requested level 2 spicy), but it was honestly pretty small portion-wise for an entree, and there weren't a lot of noodles. The tofu was excellent, however. And the chicken breast on top of the khao man gai was super dry and disappointing (I would've vasty preferred dark meat chicken with skin still attached), but the bed of aromatic and flavorful rice is probably one of the best I've ever had. They have the khao man gai rice available as a side and I'd recommend that to anyone who comes here, because it was incredible. The flavorful khao man gai sauce was the only reason we were able to finish the super dry protein on top of the dish. The friend we were with got the pork pad see ew and found the protein there to be pretty tough and dry as well, though the noodles were good. This place is pretty far away from us so we would not go out of our way to return, but if you find yourself in the area and craving Thai, definitely give the khao man gai rice a try. read more

Got there and picked up my order and as i was walking away, a kind gentlemen rushed back and checked my order to say he gave me the wrong order and that he had to RE MAKE my order. The Blue Rat is far and away best Asian/Thai food in Garland. All of their entrees use fresh veggies that are crisp, their curries are great and none of their dishes are stingy with amount of chicken added to the dish. I ordered the pineapple curry with pork, vegetable egg rolls and mango with sticky rice. My first time eating here and this is the best Thai food i have ever had. The pineapple curry has great flavor. Egg rolls are larger than you would get from any other Thai place and the mango and sticky rice was amazing as well. Cheaply made buffet quality food. Ordered Tom Kha soup and it smelled like dirty socks...Tasted super rancid. I let them know it might be spoiled and he said that's how it comes because I ordered level 3 spicy? It wasn't spicy and what does that have to do with the rotten taste? He told me that's how it is everywhere but I've ordered Tom Kha soup all over the metroplex and make it at home myself- theirs is simply inedible!! The Thai Iced Tea was a good size and delicious, the Soft Spring Roll yummy and good for sharing, and we enjoyed the Spicy Fresh Chili Chicken (spicy, oh yeah) and Massaman Curry Chicken (great flavor)! Johnny took great care of us at the table, and we met some great people sitting near us and then walked to the square for music. Although the ingredients seemed to be good quality, the food was not what I expected. We ordered 3 entrees to go - they gave us an estimated 30 minute pickup time. We got there and had to wait an additional 20 minutes. I'm normally pretty patient but we got it to go because my daughter was sick and we needed to get back home quickly. The food smelled and looked very good but it was insanely spicy. I can handle if there's a bit more spice than "mild", because I understand we all handle spice differently, but omfg this was aggressively spicy for being lowest level spice. I tried to finish my entree, but couldn't eat the food because it gave me instant acid reflux, so it was wasted. I'll go back again and try zero spice and update. read more

We found this place on around me and decided to try it. Wow! This was the best massaman curry We've had to date. I had the vegetable version and my wife had the tofu. Mine was packed with vegetables. We had a spice level of 2 which was perfect. The service was great and the food was hot and fresh. I highly recommend this place. We will be back for Update: 8/8/20 This is our favorite Thai place. A word of caution, they know spicy. It's a 5 point scale. You like spicy? Start at three. I did a 4 on a dish, I had been warned, and I loved it...but I knew what I was getting into. I've seen many customers reassessing down to a 2 or a 1. Start at 3 for spicy, go up after you've started at 3. I love this little ratty hole in the wall. It saddens me when they're not busy. This is our go to Thai restaurant in the Dallas area. Small place and not much to look at but the food and service is exceptional. Thai fried rice, fried coconut ice cream, really everything we've ordered is great. Not sure what kind of iced tea they have but there is no sugar and its super smooth and has a great flavor.
