Initially when I saw this, I thought it was a vegan restaurant. This place is in downtown Hilo and has very good vegan/vegetarian/non veg options all in one place. I had the Jamaican Jerk Chicken Sammy. The chicken was moist and flavorful. It came topped with fried apple banana slices and beet sauerkraut. It was quite delicious. Choosing a salad on the side-you have over a dozen type of dressings to chose from. I did not get to try the kombucha but would have gone for the flight. Yum yum. :) read more

The Booch Bar is a fun place. You order and pay at the front, then seat yourself. They have breakfast until 11:00, and then their lunch/dinner menu... menus also include their booch cocktails. They are the makers of Big Island Booch Kombucha, so they have their full variety of kombucha flavors bottled, canned, or on tap (extra seasonal flavors available). On a visit yesterday, we popped in for tacos after a day at the park. I had the Hawaiian Fish Tacos and my friend got the chicken. They were pretty good... the creama sauce on the tacos was incredible, but tacos were just okay. Rice and beans desperately needed some seasoning. Their line of hot sauces are amazing though, and really give a nice flavor and kick to your food. Overall, I really enjoy The Booch Bar. Staff are friendly, establishment is clean with lots of seating options. You can also find their lines of Booch and hot sauces at local grocers when you're on the go. read more

Oh how I wanted to like this place!! I would normally give 1 or 2 stars but it's not fair to them that we didn't like it. I'm sure the good reviews are accurate for their experience but for us it was a huge let down. First off, let's start positive the art is amazing, the colors, and vibrant feel of the art makes up for the lack of flavor in the food. We had a lovely dude take our order but for 3 meals and 3 drinks, and a plain burger being $100+ was a surprise but being on vacation you roll with it. It's a small business, we are contributing to the economy. As someone else stated, not kid friendly, at all. My 4 year old ate nothing, she hated the thick man sized burger and the homemade ketchup. (Just no) I'm gluten intolerant and it states that you can order a gluten free bun with the fresh catch sandwich. Hahahahahaha It's not a bun, it's the crusty dried gluten free bread they toast , and of-course it cuts the top of your mouth when you bite into it it's so hard. Plus, sliced multi-grain bread just doesn't taste right with fish, and it was unexpected. It said Bun, not sliced bread. Maybe there were just out of GF buns? My other gluten loving peeps ate the fresh catch sandwich with regular buns. It looked so good! Not gonna lie, the bun looked fresh made and buttery. I don't hate this place just want to manage expectations for people such as myself that's not vegan or rigid with healthy foods. Wish I didn't have an allergy and could have had their regular buns. Unfortunately, it gets worse, they put a quarter size drop of tarter on all our sandwiches, leaving it so dry and flavorless. This includes my sandwich as well. Ok, np! I go to the bar and ask for tarter and they wanted more money for something that I already paid for. So if I want this to be edible, I need to pay more? Whatever! Let's get through this meal with a child that is pissed she has nothing to eat. We all ate maybe 1/4 of our $100+ meal before dumping it and going somewhere else. I didn't eat til we got back to the hotel. You live and learn when you travel. It was busy so people like this place! I stopped by The Booch Bar while waiting for my breakfast place to open in the quaint downtown Hilo area. We walked in (around 10am on a weekday) were immediately seated. I noticed that they were cutting and freezing fresh fruit for their smoothies and acai bowls and immediately gave them props for that. I noticed a few other customers eating acai bowls and saw how appealing and delicious they looked, but I declined in lieu for another acai place. We ordered a flight of small batch brewed kombucha and I was surprised on how unique they were. Almost all of them had local fruit flavors and were refreshing. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get a growler fill of the mango mint, but there was plenty of other things to try on the big island! read more

Some of the smoothest kombuchas I have tasted and I am an aficionado. Had a flight of kombuchas: lilokai, rose, cherry, and living root beer, with first two particularly good. My tempeh, avocado, Kim chi breakfast sandwich was serve quick, fresh, and delicious. Yes, I am vegan, and this is great vegan fare but Booch Bar also offers great healthy food for all diets. I was soo sad we missed breakfast hour because I was revving to try Kela's Breakfast plate, but the salads we ordered in lieu more than made up for it! Extremely hippie, trendy spot with the most interesting homemade Kombucha and Jun flavors. The employees here are so sweet and chill. I ordered the Nicoise Salad (grilled ahi, not blackened) with a wasabi miso vinegraitte. Sooo delicious! Friend ate most of the olives and yellow sweet potato that I'm not too fond of, but the fresh greens were so soft, cherry tomatoes were on point, as were the pickled/slightly fermented/spicy green beans. Fish was fresh and warm, slightly underseasoned but the vinegraitte more than made up for it. Friend got the Casablanca Salad, per recommendation by staff as one of their most popular dishes. It was sooo amazing! The garbanzo and macnut hummus was garlicky and so yummy with the organic blue tortilla chips and butter toasted sourdough crostini (by the way, I don't think they used sourdough..it was a wheat bread instead). I absolutely love that this restaurant exists. It's difficult to find places that offer this amount of non-meat options. I'm not too crazy about meat and I occasionally eat fish so going to a restaurant with this much choice autonomy was so cool. My wife and I decided to try the conscious culture burger, the fresh catch bibimbap and a cup of soup (which I believe was a tomato base soup). Originally, we had planned to share our food, but my wife loved the conscious culture burger so much, she finished it before I even got to try it. The bibimbap was delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked and well seasoned, all the picketed vegetables gave it a nice little tangy flavor and crunch, and the rice and egg helped foster an awesome textural complexity when combined with everything else. On top of that, the bbq sauce gave it a beautiful salty/sweet component. I really enjoyed this dish. The soup was also really good. I don't really have much to note about it because I don't have too much memory of it other than thaI liked it. Also, my hat is off to the purple sweet potato salad. Once I added a little salt to it, the flavor is quite different to sweet potato salad that you get on the mainland and it was really enjoyable to try. Absolutely go check this place out. They're very vegan/vegetarian friendly and they also have a nice assortment of drinks as well. I only wish that our Airbnb was closer to this area so I could come here every day! read more

Conscious Culture Cafe felt like one of the more "hip" spots to grab a meal in the downtown area of Hilo. We looked up "Big Island Kombucha" on Yelp and it led us to Conscious Culture because they have Big Island Kombucha on tap! We decided to get dinner there. Parking was easy to find. There was street parking and a parking lot across the street. To start, we ordered a flight of kombucha--lavender, melon, hibiscus, and mango. It was a good amount for each pour. I wasn't too hungry, so I was really happy that they had an option for a smaller portion "half salad" versus the "full salad". It took me a long minute to figure out what I wanted because they had such great choices on the menu. The kind lady behind the counter was so sweet and patient. I ordered a half salad of the Puna Beet Salad which was the perfect amount for me, while my boyfriend ordered a roasted veggie bowl. When the Puna Beet Salad came out, I immediately noticed that it was missing the spicy pickled beans and macnuts. I went to the front and mentioned this to one of the staff. I was really excited about the spicy pickled beans because it would have gone really well with the beets, but apparently they no longer put it on the salad even though it was still on the menu. They are supposedly revamping their menu (although it seems like the online menu is still not updated). They had macnuts, but simply forgot to put it on top of my salad. The salad overall was great, but I was disappointed at the service and lack of transparency. My boyfriend enjoyed his roasted veggie bowl, and I tried a bit of it as well. The flavors all went along well with each other, and it was quite filling. Overall, the food was good. Service was good, but could have been better in the sense that an apology or acknowledgement would've been nice for missing stuff in my salad and not being transparent to begin with. I LOVE THE BOOCH BAR! I'm traveling from Los Angeles and love to find kindred hippie spirits!! It's been a little difficult finding fun, tasty vegan food on the island but Booch Bar delivered! Portions were huge, tasty but still pretty healthy and the staff was awesome! I loved all the bumper stickers and tshirts they had and snagged a few stickers for my fridge. I unfortunately can't remember our server's name (he lives on his own farm), but he gave awesome service and gave some great recommendations for places to check out on the Hilo side of the island.
