Our group has performed at The Book Nook and found the owner and staff warm and generous and the food great. Not to mention all the wonderful books and treasures you will find there. It is a gem and a nice reprieve from our busy hi- tech society, in it's hometown atmosphere. read more

Well, for coffee and a chill atmosphere, this is a nice place. The book selection isn't exactly inspired; they had a lot of teen fiction and entertaining beach reads. I had an iced latte, and my husband had an iced soy mocha. Both were better than Starbucks. Anyway, we also ordered food, and here's where things went south. We ordered chips and salsa, a ham panini, and a BLT panini. Apparently, the only person working was a young guy who took our order and made our satisfactory coffee drinks. Then he forgot about us. After 15 minutes, I asked if I could possibly have the chips and salsa. He apologetically admitted he'd forgotten. 5 minutes later, (still a long time for chips and salsa, right?) we had basic chips and salsa from a jar. Fine, pretty much what I expected. So we munched on those for about 10 minutes, chilled out, finished our iced coffees, still no sign of panini. I asked again. Oh, he forgot those too. By this time, an older guy was there too. He explained that the owner was in Texas. I wondered if they had all the panini with them. For about 10 more minutes, the younger guy threw a tantrum in the kitchen, slamming silverware, etc. Finally, we received our sandwiches. Store-bought wheat bread, they were pretty under whelming. Mine even had the heel! The ham panini was tasty, but the BLT was not remotely as good as I could make at home. I'm talking basic Miracle Whip, here. Great book selections and nice place to hang at. This place adds a lot of character to Montague.

They had a jazz band when we were going to go buy books. We were greeted by a lady who was very rude, and told us to leave. We were going to give them business but I guess their "standard" of the type of people going there wasn't met. Lastly, their incompetency of their workers and consumers (who gave us very dirty looks) was substantial. read more

For atmosphere I'd probably give this place 5 stars, unfortunately they also serve coffee and food. I ordered a large Mexican Mocha, which is usually hard to mess up, when it was brought out to me I was impressed, it came in a huge cup, more like a soup bowl really, towering with whip cream. Unfortunately the proportions of the drink were all wrong. It was essentially a bowl of warm milk with a shot of espresso and a little cayenne pepper. Then came the food, I had ordered a meatball sub, mistakenly thinking it would be something resembling home made. Unfortunately what I received was sub bun topped with microwaved, more less tasteless meatballs and a store bough marinara. read more

Was surprised to be denied a plastic straw, but they don't use glasses, but rather plastic cups.

Nice atmosphere but the food they serve is terrible. Please hire somebody that knows how to actually cook and bring flavor to your food. No creativity or knowledge of cooking. Your portion sizes are also very skimpy for the price tag. This place needs some work on their menu but otherwise it could be a great hangout spot. read more

The place has a nice vibe, and actually a lot of potential. They have a nice book selection, hot food, drinks and wifi. All ideal elements. The main issue I've experienced over and over with the place is the service. Today was similar. We ordered three breakfast sandwiches and coffee, and 15mins after getting our coffee I went up to ask if our breakfast sandwiches were almost ready, and the young girl behind the counter said it was a very busy day (there may have been five other people in the entire place. She was the only one working- the owner was there but on his cell phone off to the side). She went back to make our microwaved sandwiches, and brought them out 15mins later. Another lady was waiting with me, and said it was taking over 30mins to get her one sandwich, and that she was about to cancel her order. When the food came out, she only brought two sandwiches, not three, and the bread on them was so rock hard (from being either over-microwaved or simply too old) it was inedible. I returned mine and said I didn't want anything else, as I didn't have another 30mins to wait. The owner brought us out a $5 gift card which was a kind gesture, but I probably won't ever use it, as I have no desire to go back. read more

the book nook is such a great "find" in the small town of Montague. Delicious coffee, soft live guitar music, and sweet treats to die for. When here also check out Lipka's old fashioned soda fountain ( down the street) to complete a trip back in time to when people really cared about you. The BEST COFFEE SHOP IN AMERICA!! I'm not kidding. I am a retired professor who travels, and have traveled - a lot. I always look for a good coffee shop. Here is why this one is so good. Good coffee. Great Ambiance. Excellent tables and chairs, with a selection of very comfortable chairs and sofas of very good quality. Music played at a perfect volume. Excellent live music in the evenings. (They have a grand piano.) They have aine, a nice bar and bar chairs. Good food. A small, pleasant book store so I can get up and browse. If you are a coffee shop conniseur, what else could you ask for? read more

What a wonderful place! I wish we had these in Texas. It is so warm and inviting. Beautiful soft live guitar music - even during the day. Yummy food, if not haute cuisine. I didn't want to leave. When I lived in Paris, many years ago, we often hung out for hours in a similar little cafe/bookstore. Don't come here if you are in a hurry - you will want to fall into one of the comfy chairs with a glass of good wine or a coffee and just enjoy a little life. Such a cool place! It's a great place for meeting with friends, getting some work done, or finding a book to read! They have an excellent bakery and kitchen, with a good variety of paninis, soups, and salads for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Service was friendly and complete. The atmosphere is very pleasant but don't order food or anything more complicated than a plain cup of coffee. The service is really terrible and the food.....well you'd be much better off making a sandwich at home and bringing it with you. read more

Someone call Bar Rescue-Quick! I've given this place quite a few second chances. Music is excellent, good atmosphere, decent book selection, service Horrible! Ordered the cheese and fruit plate once-the cheese looked as though it was cut by an angry 5 year old, bread was stale, the bottom of the plate was covered with water and dirt from the poorly washed grapes(?) I'm guessing. Last visit my "iced" coffee's ice melted in less than 2 minutes, they were out of stirrers and silverware at the coffee station, the counters and clothing areas were a mess, and the help was slow and untrained. Like many other new restaurants, the idea was excellent, but the devil's in the details, or in this case, the execution of service. The owners need to fix things and fast or find out the hard way that a bad reputation in this little corner of Michigan is hard to shake and will be this place's kiss of death. read more
