I went here for lunch to meet with up some old friends. I haven't been to Cafe Gloucester for over 15 years, and I'm pretty sure nothing in this place has changed in that time, including how the interior looks. Once we were ready to order, we tried to wave down a server to take our order. The first two times, the server would acknowledge us and respond "I'll come back later" or "just wait". Only after the third time did they take our order. Food came out in a reasonable time. I had the Hainanese Chicken. It tasted ok and was a decent serving size, but not particularly cheap either. It was another adventure to get our bill. We asked for it once, and after waiting 10 minutes, we asked for it again. I had to leave before we got the bill, so my friends took care of it, so I don't know how much longer they waited. I think there's a lot of HK Cafe competition in the city, which have better food, better service and better value, so I'm not sure how this one survives based on this visit. read more

Another outstanding evening at Gloucester. The high quality food and service are still consistently up there. We normally order the regular size instead of minis. The volume is substantial, but moreover, the quality is very good. Baked pork chop rice is a must. Sauce is not ketchupy. Pork chop volume is great, and thicker than other HK styles. Rice is fried instead of just white rice like the cheaper places. Service is also fantastic. All the servers are very attentive, even during busy times. The location is also great. The whole Cambie strip continues to evolve, with more restaurants and shops popping up. Perfect to walk around on a sunny day! read more

Went there for lunch yesterday. 4 adults and 2 small kids 6 &4. Total cost including tips and tax $150.39 I think it's expensive and food not so good, but the place is packed. Either I have high standards or others in Vancouver has low standard. I ordered Hainanese Chicken on rice. $20.99. No taste! Bake pork chop on rice $19.99. Not my cup of tea. Tasted ok, 3/5. Nothing bad, nothing amazing. Service was as you'd expect from one of these HK cafes. Good enough. Pricing was OK. not cheap, not too expensive. Restaurant was clean enough. I went at around 11:15pm (last call is 11:30pm) and parking was free on the street. Once again my opinion is the same as before - the number 1 reason to eat here is simply because they are one of the extremely few Vancouver Chinese place open til midnight. Otherwise you'd have to go to Richmond. Their food is just ok but fine, their pricing is just ok but not terrible. There is nothing standout about this place aside from the late night hours. circled the block more than once before lucking out with parking to meet up for a late night bite at cafe gloucester, located at 3338 cambie street. construction and permit only spots and no entry signs made it challenging. at 9:45 pm on a wednesday, the place was still humming, almost every table was full. so much for my no eating after 8:00 pm rule, but something about a hong kong café makes that rule easy to break. the clatter of dishes, the quick shuffle of servers, and the mix of conversations in english, cantonese, and mandarin made it feel like stepping into a little piece of hong kong tucked into cambie. menus here can be overwhelming, packed with all the signatures. food came out relatively fast. we had the bitter melon with sliced beef and rice noodles, which carried a slight wok hei and a touch of oiliness, though not much black bean sauce to tie it all together. the curry beef was tender and warming, served with a bowl of rice on the side. it leaned mild rather than spicy, more comfort than heat. servers were friendly and efficient, checking up on us and topping our tea often. and then came the ovaltine. simple, malty, and sweet, it anchored the meal and brought with it a wave of nostalgia, the smell, the kind of flavour that only hong kong cafés can deliver. it turned everything else on the table into comfort food, no matter the hour. parking might be a headache, but once you're seated, cafe gloucester does exactly what you hope for: late night warmth, unfussy plates, and a familiar taste of hong kong right on cambie. read more

Went to Café Gloucester Saturday afternoon and wow it was packed! This place has been around forever so clearly they're doing something right. Got the baked pork chop rice and it was actually really good. The sauce was way more savory than I expected - not sweet at all which I liked. Pork chop was crispy and the cheese on top was melted perfectly. Pretty solid comfort food and service was decent considering how busy it was. read more

Resident parking limited with some are residential parking permit only. Always pretty busy from morning to evening. Went here for lunch with my family. First time here! I've been wanting to eat at a HK cafe since it's been a while, and I crave the HK milk tea... My partner and I came on a Saturday during lunchtime, and it was pretty packed! Thankfully, we got seated right away as we were only 2 people. Service was very fast and efficient. We ordered, and the HK milk teas came out soon after. The HK milk tea was delicious! Tasted very authentic. The seafood baked rice was good too - though I wish the rice portion was bigger. The creamy sauce complemented the seafood well, and the rice had a great texture. The beef brisket fried noodles was divine... amazing sauce flavour, and nicely crispy noodles. I would have liked more vegetables, or a variety of veggies, but we made do with the 4 choy given. Some legit Hong Kong cafe type of food. One of my favorites. They have a lot of the classics which I enjoy. I had a hard time deciding since they had so much on their menu. I ended up with their roast pork rice dish and a hot Hong Kong coffee. The roast pork was a westernized demi-glazed roast pork with a side of diced carrots/corn kernel for your veggies and rice. The demi-glaze was a nicely made sauce that went well with the roast pork. However, the roast pork was such a small piece. I was expecting a bit of a bigger piece. The Hong Kong coffee was great though. I needed it so bad. Service was good. Server spoke English and Cantonese, so that was nice. Ambiance had a diner type of feel to it. It was fairly clean and had both tables and booths. The paper towel dispenser in the bathroom wasn't very responsive, so have a plan b if you can't get that working to dry your hands. But it better not be to not wash your hands at all. Wash your hands and be sanitary, you nasty! read more

It just wasn't happening!  I ordered the E-Fu Noodles with Mushrooms & Oyster Sauce all to myself, and finished the entire plate! I have often wanted to order this dish in many places I've gone to, but it didn't seem to agree with whomever I was dining with. Too simple a dish is the general impression that I've gotten. More ingredients preferred. I was so happy to finally order this dish and enjoy the entire plate of it to myself. This was one of the better E-Fu Noodles with Mushrooms that I've had too. Came here with my partner and got the baked seafood rice and beef brisket chow mein. We both got hot Hong Kong milk teas, complementary with the dishes. The baked seafood rice was really good.. I can't remember what exactly was in it but there was an ample amount of shrimp and fish. The sauce was really delicious with the rice. Everything together was a party in my soft mouth. My only complaint is the dish is really small for what you're paying. The beef brisket chow mein was equally as delicious and saucey. I love eating the crispy edges! Did you know that Gloucester is the county town of Gloucestershire, and is the 53rd largest settlement in the United Kingdom by population? The reason I bring up this fact is because I want to educate you. I also mention this because I have a feeling that the owners of this HK-style diner simply chose a name at random that sounded grandiose in order to justify higher prices. I bet you that if you asked the staff, or even the owners of the restaurant "What is Gloucester?", they wouldn't be able to answer you. This restaurant isn't really a "Cafe", nor is it remotely related to anything from the UK. We've gone here several times and tried a number of "typical" HK-style restaurant offerings: fried rice dishes, fried noodles, "pastas" and HK-interpretations of western foods. Food was unremarkable, even for the genre. But, factor in the 30-50% higher prices, and you are suddenly looking at Filet Mignon prices for what amounts for ground beef. I get that the rent is probably higher on Granville street, but when a family of 3 pays $85 for a casual meal, they've probably priced out their target audience: cheap-ass Asians. I ordered the prime rib set dinner and surprisingly, the beef was exceptionally tender and the cooking was amazingly good. I think it is well worth the $49.00 it charged. We ordered the french toast, the beef shank noodle soup and stir fried noodles (hor fun) with black bean sauce. All three were great, if i had to rank the savory dishes the stir fried noodles were solid. The noodles were fresh and could taste the wok hei. The standout in the beef shank noodle soup was the braised egg and meat. I cant tell what makes the beef and eggs so flavorful but it was delicious! The french toast was SO GOOD. It was crispy on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside. Service was ok, speedy, what you would expect at a asian establishment. Bland, overpriced HK-style food, with some uninspired vegetarian options, but good portions and good service. I had some SkipTheDishes credit and needed a quick lunch, as I live nearby and was between meetings. I saw that they had a few vegetarian (and indeed, vegan) options, so I decided to give them a shot. Their vegetable dishes range from $22-25, which is pretty steep. They also have a vegetable chow mein ($21 plus tax), and you can replace the usual egg-based chow mein noodles with rice noodles at no extra cost (which would make the dish vegan). So I did that. The order was ready at the stated time, and I was greeted by the friendly servers. The place was packed (at 12:30pm on a Monday), with mostly Chinese patrons -- always a good sign for a Chinese restaurant. The dish was a large portion, with lots of veggies (broccoli, red pepper, zucchini, celery, bean sprouts, mushrooms, black fungus), and wide rice noodles, covered with a standard brown sauce. Filling, tasty enough, but pretty uninspired and overpriced for what it is. There are way better veggie noodle dishes in town for less $. Unless you're stuck at this part of the Cambie corridor and are desperate for veggie Chinese food, I don't recommend it. Not bad, but nothing special. 2.5 stars is what I'd give it if Yelp allowed. read more

3.5 I rarely pop in to Café Gloucester but have yet had a bad meal here. It has always been on the costlier side of Cha Chaan Tengs (~$20 for the usual choices). Since we were in the area but pressed for time, we decided to grab lunch. On this particular occasion we discovered the meals were also tiny portionwise. For reference, all three full sized dishes were smaller than mini sets elsewhere. We ordered baked short ribs on rice with black pepper sauce, chicken filet steak on rice and Thai chicken style fried rice. This does not look like "Minced Beef with Fried Egg on Fried Rice" according to their Chef's Special Menu. I've had this dish before at other Chinese restaurants and it is definitely not this. This is spaghetti bolognese sauce on egg fried rice topped with an egg. It seems they ran out of minced beef and just poured spaghetti sauce that's used for their pasta/noodle dishes over egg fried rice. It's really disappointing to see a restaurant do this to a customer. They should be more honest about their dishes, which reflects negatively on their service. read more

It's been a while since we've come here. We ordered their baked Portuguese chicken rice which was bubblin' hot. It was pretty good but I would have liked just a bit more salt. Lucky I had their hot sauce to my taste buds. Their sautéed shrimp with scrambled egg on rice noodles is one of my kid's favourites... it's now one of mine too. The price doesn't match the quality of the food. The service was really bad, and the staffs were very inconsiderate. I complained about the noise from the table behind me, then I overheard those staffs talking and laughing about it. The fried fish fillet was overcooked, and the French toast wasn't worth the additional price. Will not be back. read more

Café Gloucester has been around forever around this Cambie St. Neighborhood. This place is a staple in the community for some good Cantonese food. Their ambiance isn't anything special. It's kind of just a meh when you enter into the place. Their service is decent. They're usually very attentive to their customers dining needs and they're usually very efficient and quick. So that's great. Their portions are decent as well. They have a lot of good variety and selections for food. So there's plenty of dishes to choose from. They have western dishes. They have Chinese dishes. And then they got a mix of western Asian fusion dishes. There's plenty to choose from for everyone. Their menu is quite large and their portions for food, I think at least, relatively generous. Their prices though is the downside. They are a little higher than most other Cantonese restaurants. Maybe it's because of where they're located. But some of the dishes are quite expensive for Cantonese food If you're looking for value for food. Then there are better restaurants to go to for better value. Location wise. They're "close" to the King Ed Station. But probably a good 10-15 min walk from the station to the restaurant. So it's close but it's not that close to walk to and from especially during the winter months here. If you don't have an umbrella walking here during the winter. You'll get soaked for sure. Driving wise. There are a few areas where you can find free parking for a couple of hours. Shorter and closer walk to Gloucester Café. We come here from time to time. It's a decent place for Cantonese food if you're craving for it. But for the price. You can find another Cantonese restaurant in the city for better value. My boyfriend told me Café Gloucester was one of the first HK café back in the day and he remembers driving with his family for 20 minutes before Richmond became what it is now where great Asian food is a few steps away. He says it looks pretty much the same, even down to the place mats. I'm sure this place would have been buzzing busy before but on a Sunday night at 9pm, it was still half full - a promising sight. I decided on the classic Baked Pork Chop on Rice with a Hot HK Milk Tea. They warn you there is a 15-20 minute wait for baked entrées - so don't order if you're hangry! The Milk Tea was what I expected, but sadly it wasn't burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth hot - it came semi-hot. I like it piping hot so you have to sip it slowly and forced to prolong the drink. The Baked Pork Chop on Rice was piping hot though! The sauce had a reminiscent sweet and savoury tomato taste that was ketchup heavy and it was a perfect pairing to the rice underneath. A downside was the Pork Chop itself, there just wasn't much of it at all. The breading was crispy but the pork chop wasn't thick at all - quite thin. At least there were no bones and it wasn't very fatty but the star of the dish was minimal. My friends had the Thai Fried Rice, Baked Portugese Chicken on Rice and the Curry Pork Chop on Rice. Their end verdict was it was decent but had better in Richmond. Service was nice though and they filled our drinks.
