Stepped into a packed entryway and bar area. Gave my name and was told the wait was 30-40 minutes. My associate was running late so all good. I thought that the buzz in the room was a great sign for what was to come but I was wrong. The room was electric. The service was friendly and attentive but the food? Just meh. I wanted to like it but it was bland and underwhelming. I ordered the Crabcake Sandwich (as recommended) and my guest ordered the Club Sandwich. Both were mid. On a Saturday at noon, our party of 3 was sat indoors immediately. I'd say the place was 80-90% full. They had wraps, soups, salads, and burgers on the menu. It's worth observing that there were no specials on offer. It's not that kind of place. I liked the crabby waffle fries, even if the seasoning was pretty heavy. My chicken Caesar wrap was crouton-forward. It was nice, but I wish it'd been more chicken and parm heavy. Our table split some onion rings that had absolutely dangerously tasty breading and almost no onions. The vibe inside was that of satisfied, talkative guests. I've been here a bunch of times. I really like the grilled veggie wrap and the power bowl salad. They get very busy on weekends and typically stop accepting take out orders around 5 - At least that has been my experience numerous times. I came here yesterday and had a less than stellar experience. My husband and I ordered the power bowl salad but when it came the quinoa had like a webbing in it as if it was moldy so we sent it back and were served a new one. I also had bad pieces of kale in my salad. This lead to a longer than intended lunch and also no one wants to be served spoiled food that someone didn't pay close attention to. I also ordered a side of french fries - they were bland, no seasoning or salt at all. I didn't have a small plate for a bit so it was a little hard to use ketchup. You know this place has to be good when it's packed on a Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant has two areas in a wrap-around set up. The parking is strictly street parking which can be challenging during busier times. We were able to find a spot right in front of the restaurant. When the place is packed, it is very loud in the dining room. My four year-old daughter said it was too loud for her but she managed. The waiter was very good. He checked in on us regularly and gave us everything we needed, including refills of drinks. I ordered the French onion soup. The cheese had the same texture as Gruyère but definitely didn't taste like it. The broth was a bit spicier than typical. I wouldn't order this again. I also ordered a grilled chicken wrap with sautéed onions and cheese. It came with pickle slices and that was it. The wrap was awesome! I love the variety of wraps you can order (spinach, whole wheat, regular, etc.). It couldn't have been cooked better! Overall, it was a good experience. Came in here for lunch one Saturday at around 11:30. Not too many people so we were able to get a table quickly. This is a very clean bar/restaurant. And semi-small , so likely not great for big groups. Service was a excellent. The staff was very attentive and quick with service refilling our drinks and taking/getting us our orders quickly. The food was good but not great. We started with the French onion soup. It was good but much saltier than I am used to. Then we got the shrimp po boy and the open faced roast beef. The shrimp po boy Had good flavor but was a little bare. It had about 7 to 8 shrimp with a great sauce, some tomato and a piece of lettus. There were 3 slices of pickels on the side and we ordered the waffle fries separately. I wish the po boy had some more shrimp pieces to make it a heartier sandwich. With this ratio it was mostly bread. As for the waffle fries, they were very bare - truely just potatoes. No seasoning or anything. The open roast beef was a very interesting dish. Roast beef on a piece of toast - apparently its very old school. It's a very odd dish, I'm glad I tried it but I probably wouldn't order it again. read more

First time here, and everything was perfect. We had called ahead to make a reservation for a party of seven on a Wednesday at 1 PM. The staff were very supportive and attentive. Everything we had here was delicious. The deviled eggs have jalapeño premixed in them, but you really can't taste it. I was curious to try their chopped steak. It's very similar to a Salisbury steak, but it is really just a loaf of delicious hamburger meat. The thin onion rings were also very delicious. The staff went above and beyond our expectations by putting our birthday cake in the freezer, adding/lighting a candle, and slicing it for us, along with extra plates and forks, without any surcharge, like other restaurants attempt to do. Cozy interior with a couple of TVs on showing College Football games and seemed like a nice place to gather with some friends to watch a game that's not rowdy. Service was great! More peppery than the typical french onion soups I've had and a bit too salty for my taste. But there was a generous heaping of gruyere melted on top which I was happy with. We're all here for the cheese, right? Shrimp Po' Boy: Shrimps were small but fried well, just wish there were more to fill the sandwich out more; it felt like the sandwich was 80% bread. The remoulade on the sandwich was really good and helped an otherwise very simple sandwich (only other things on it were lettuce and tomatoes). Waffle fries: This did not come with what we ordered and had to be added separately. It needed salt, pretty bare bones otherwise. Open Hot Roast Beef: Hot roast beef with gravy on a piece of toast. Troy took good care of me at the bar. The highlight of the meal. The popcorn shrimp you think its gonna be 20-25 small count shrimp like popcorn. Its not. Over battered and seasoned and fried too long. The remoulade was scratch made and good. The Power salad with grilled chicken was good but portion size for $20 was lacking. The blackened salmon left a lot to be desired. The blackened seasoning was ao salty; made the fish not edible. The side okra was also so heavily battered and overcooked it wasn't edible. I don't think I've ever had a nastier server. I went for lunch with my 18 and 24 year old sons and one of their girlfriends. It all started when the sodas were flat so we mentioned to the waitress. She disagreed because one was diet and the other regular so it must be us and she had to speak to the manager. A few minutes later, she came back with sodas from the same flat tap. Next, my son's girlfriend ordered a garden salad with a side of $5 steamed broccoli. Instead she got a Cobb salad and fries. When we called her over, the waitress told her that she ordered a Cobb and fries but would replace it. (We all heard her order what she said she did) The waitress then repeated the order back to us for a garden salad with fries. We corrected her again. After the correct order came, she left the fries and came back a few minutes later to passive aggressively ask if she changed her mind about the fries. This part only described her actions. Her face from the start told me all it needed to (she may as well have just given me the finger). The food was average and overpriced. Avoid. Absolutely love this spot! I've been here about six different times or so while living in Madison. They have great beer and great espresso martinis. I love their apps as well, always fresh and come out pretty quick. This place gets quite busy on a weekend so expect a wait or plan to get there early. Wow was very lucky finding such a great little spot for a nice soup and appetizers. The inside was small but accessible to move around . There was a large bar and about 20 tables in all . They also had additional seats and tables outside . The soups were excellent and the food is good. They had a a lot of homemade sauces on their menus . I visited for dinner on a Thursday evening for 6 people. We were seated right away. This was my 2nd time dining in (first time indoors). Our waiter was great and attentive. I ordered the boneless buffalo wings. They were basically chicken fingers with sauce but they were tasty! I also had a side of steak fries which you can never go wrong with. The traditional margarita tasted mostly like lime juice to be honest. I tried my friend's cucumber margarita and it was good! Not sure if I'd order it again though. I absolutely loved this place! We had to wait about 10minutes for a seat at a table so we headed to the bar for a drink. We were promptly served and the bartender was very friendly. When we got to our table our server, Nicholas greeted us and since we already had drinks he gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and the busboy set out water for us. We ordered an appetizer of potato skins which were huge. It was like eating 2 baked potatoes cut in halves. I forgot to snap a pic of them. For my meal I ordered the crab cake sandwich with a small house salad. The rest of the gang ordered the turkey dinner, Greek salad with salmon, and a cheeseburger with a salad. Everyone enjoyed their meals. My crab cake was very good, not filled with breading and not too fried. I have to add that while I was eating my salad I was trying to cut my cucumber and ended up wearing my salad and dumping the dressing cup on the floor splattering the guy next to us all over his leg and shoe. He was not upset thank goodness and the staff was very quick to help clean the floor and gave the guy napkins and wet naps to help with the cleanup. I was so embarrassed but it turned out ok. Nicholas gave me more dressing and some club soda to try and clean up my dress. Besides Nicholas being helpful I have to say that the entire staff was very efficient as well. They were always there cleaning off unused dishes from tables and refilling drinks. The prices are pretty reasonable and the food is great. We will definitely be coming back. read more

This was a standard tavern type place with one of the better menus I have seen. They had lots of variety and options to choose from. The prices were extremely reasonable too. The service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. I shared the deviled eggs starter ($7). They came with bacon and jalapeno. There was a ton of filling while the bacon and jalapeno really enhanced the egg as a whole. For an entrée, I had the fried chicken sandwich with waffle fries ($13). The sandwich came with a cucumber slaw, remoulade, and toasted bun. The waffle fries were too hard and not very flavorful. Regarding the sandwich, the chicken was more like a chicken cutlet rather than fried chicken. It was on the smaller end, but decent in taste. The remoulade helped heighten the sandwich. I also tried the onion strings which were crispy and seasoned nicely as well as the grilled veggie wrap. The wrap came with zucchini, yellow squash, Portobello, eggplant, and goat cheese. I was afraid this would be too dry, but that was not the case at all. The goat cheese really brought all of the vegetables together. It was quite filling as well. Will I go back? I would. read more

This place is always crowded and busy with some great outdoor seating. The menu seems varied but general bar and grill type foods. I ended up choosing the Cuban sandwich - which was extremely disappointing. It doesn't seem hard to make a Cuban but this appeared to be Oscar Meyer ham folded up with a thin piece of cheese on some type of tasteless bread that resembled a frozen bagel. The tiniest bit of pulled pork spread out like a school cafeteria trying to control portions to make it spread across the entire student body. No mustard, no pickles. Not pressed. Bottle hill tavern is a great spot in downtown Madison for some lunch, dinner or drinks with friends. I usually go to this spot for a late night meal or snack. They have a late night menu that starts at 9:30 and they are open later than most places in town. Last time I went the waiter was awesome, he was friendly nice and accommodating to all our requests. My friends all say the wings are the best in the area. I had the veggie wrap, and fried okra which were tasty and filling as well. As a long time Pals Cabin in West Orange Patron, I was shocked to hear the Horn family a few years back took over this location and turned back the clocks with some of their long-time favorites from yesteryear. Arriving from Florida we rolled into Waverly square in Madison grabbed a coveted spot and stepped into this bustling tavern on a Friday Night. Old school tavern with plenty of regulars as you can see this is a Local Crowd. Place is PACKED and we are told it is an hour wait for a table of 4. Luckily, we were able to secure some seats at the bar where Troy our bartender, was friendly and accommodating, while the 4 of us waited for our table. Table was ready in 25 minutes, a high top near the bar, but ok for us. 14 minutes go by before our new server even gives us a glance, lucky Troy saw us and grabbed more cocktails for us. Menu is standard fare, but I am here for 2 things. Cream of Mushroom Soup & the Burger which Pals Cabin made famous. We did try a few other items, as well. We started with the chicken bacon Quesadillas. These were actually quite good, but the issue was the internal ingredients were cold like they were sitting there than were wrapped in the wrap and the wrap heated. Good taste but cool not the way to serve them. THINGS GOT MUCH BETTER FROM HERE. We had 2 Cream of Mushroom soups and 2 French Onions. 1st off the Mushroom soup was as good as I remember it simply outstanding. The other thing was the French onion was just as good, delicious. 50% TO THE FINISH LINE. 2 Burgers, some sliders & a Cuban sandwich were the entrees of choice. My Burger was absolutely outstanding, while all the others were cooked to the preferred temp, of our friends and all agreed they were top shelf. The steak fries were PIPING HOT (Fantastic) and the onion strings were really like little strips were as good as it gets. Our server really never did get into the groove, but more drinks were found and everyone left stuffed to the gills. This was really a 4.5 - or better but I have to be honest with my reviews. We called ahead to reserve a table for our party of 10 which included a person in a wheel chair. Upon arrival I was surprised to see how narrow the table was and how close surrounding tables were. It was a very tight squeeze to get our handicapped person in, but we managed. I had the 4 pc deviled eggs appetizer that had bacon bits on top. They were great. We had to get two orders of popcorn shrimp because there were only 4 shrimp per order. Popcorn shrimp in other restaurants have smaller shrimp and a larger quantity than the here. Everyone seemed to be happy with their main entrees of burgers, pulled porked, chipped beef and salmon salad. I was disappointed in my herb chicken breast with grilled vegetables. I love their Sunday Brunch , I can't speak highly enough about their Shrimp and Grits on that menu. Enjoyed several visits here. Casual atmosphere, friendly staff. Families, dates, all clearly at home here. Enjoyed afternoon drinks at the bar, lunch and dinner - very reasonable prices, and we enjoyed everything from the onion soup through yummy assorted sandwiches up to the excellent turkey dinner. Desserts are generously portioned and outstanding. And the house cocktails are well worth a try. We live two towns away, and are already putting this place on our list of local favorites.
