After waiting a half hour for our order we went to ask if the food was coming and they told us they lost our order. We weren't too bothered until we saw that other tables continued to get what we ordered while we waited another 15 minutes. The eggs Benedict was good but nothing special. The latte I ordered was very pretty but didn't have any vanilla and tasted burnt. Disappointing for what we paid. We ate on the cafe side. read more

I usually love Eggs Benedict. I was very disappointed. The hollandaise might be scratch made, but ours was cold. It was also heavy on the black pepper with no cayenne in sight, even though the girl who took our order said she thought it had cayenne. The brioche was a nice touch and the eggs were cooked pretty well, but they were the only hot thing in the dish. Even the ham was cold (I'm guessing because it's thin shaved deli-style ham, it cools off fast). The fried potato were tasty, but hubby said they were too greasy for him. All in all, awfully high prices for a place where you order cafeteria style and have to bus your own table. We might come back to try a pastry, but maybe not. read more

We went twice while we in town last weekend; once for lunch and once for breakfast. The only complaint was the the bread used on the Tuna Nicoise sandwich was way too hard. The insides squished out in every direction if you tried to bite it. Unfortunately, the bread had to be eaten separately. The Traditional Breakfast (poached eggs, thick-cut bacon and home fries) was delicious. It's hard to find a place that poaches eggs the tradition way. They were done to perfection. The croissant - pastry "shards" everywhere with that wonderful silky buttery interior, oh my! Since that was so good we came back later and bought a couple of their baguettes. Okay. I have only been a couple times and seemed to arrive shortly after a throng of tourists jumped off a bus and ordered everything that I wanted, this actually happened, but I can't hold that against them. The monsieur was great and the blueberry cobbler was the highlight of the experience. The wine selection is decent but I didn't delve too far into the selections, it was breakfast after all. The feel of the place is nice, water is self-serve and you are expected to bus your table after yourself, which I don't mind but people tend to ingnore this and leave you cleaning up after others. When you do interact with the staff they are pleasant and promt. This is one of a few great places in Olympia for quick and delicious food. Have enjoyed many a fine treat here. My favorite is the gateau basque, seriously I am enamored. I also love the all sandwiches, especially tomato; beef; and tuna. Their soups are usually divine. The croques make for a fabulous, warm lunch. I also dig the iced tea. I also started buying loaves of bread here; which are so good I tend to eat half of them immediately- a real treat for about $4. The prices are reasonable across the board. I enjoy sitting in the cafe and watching people walk by. There are all kinds of people who come here: students, weekend shoppers, Capitol workers, older folks, families with kids. It's a nice mix. I like the low key atmosphere and feel comfortable hanging out. I've never had a problem with service. One gent in particular; one of the bakers with longish light brown hair; has been consistently exemplary. I think he recognizes me as a regular and always smiles. One time when he was my server and I didn't start eating right away, he came over two times to make sure the food was okay. This has been my favorite breakfast spot every time I have come to Olympia to visit. Unfortunately this last week two of us had the breakfast classic and it was almost inedible. The toast was so hard you could not even bite it. The bacon was a dark hard roofing shingle that even a knife could not cut. The poached egg was actually a boiled egg with a slit in the top with a semi hard yolk. The potato was the only food on the plate that we considered good. I was embarrassed to have brought my breakfast date here. I will not be back. We were there on 8/24/18 around 1100 if that helps the owner to pin down the cook that offered up this disaster. read more

Grab a pastry, take it to go, and do nothing else here!! My family went out to breakfast here a couple of weekends ago and had a terrible experience. The cashier had a bad attitude from the start and became extremely impatient when there was a miscommunication between her and my German sister who's English isn't the best. On top of that the food was terrible. My husband and I got our food first. The bread and potatoes were so hard, you could break teeth on them. The same goes for my family's breakfast, who didn't receive their food until at least 30 minutes later because the cooks were on a break? When we complained the cashier said their ticketing system was down, which is so ridiculous considering the counter and kitchen are only a few steps away! So disappointed with the food and service when I know how good their pastries are. read more

Odd little place that's kind of a cross between a coffee shop and a cafe, with a bus-your-own-table policy that results in tables with crumbs of food left on them. I've eaten here a few times and the pastries and bread are above average, but the employees always seem disinterested or too busy to give a shit. Today, though, I ordered a turkey-avocado sandwich, and while the flavor was decent enough, one of those distracted employees left a piece of turkey bone in the meat. Consequently, I'm now missing the wall of one of my molars and will incur a costly dentist visit to get a crown put in. That sandwich was definitely not worth the hundreds of bucks it's going to end up costing me. My advice to the owner(s) of this place is to have a serious talk with your employees. Better service and attention to detail would have gotten you a 4-star review, but as it is, I can't recommend your restaurant to anyone. read more

The prices are kind of expensive and they don't have options for vegans, which is pretty sad because I was hoping a place like this would. They have lots of sweets and treats, which makes it not being vegan even worse. But they do have good sandwiches which are super cheap and great for lunch on the go. Their bread is a little hard to eat because it's so hard. But it's still good. They don't wear gloves however when making the food, gross. I've been here a few times now so I feel that I've experienced enough on different days to get a good feel for this place. Every time I've visited, it's been quite busy, which is always a good sign in my book. Their cafe breakfast menu is small but of good quality. I've had the poached eggs on toast with pesto chevre and it was DELICIOUS. A very generous portion for the price too- you get two eggs on two large pieces of bread spread with the pesto chevre- very filling. This morning, I convinced my boyfriend to go with me specifically for the ham and cheese croissants. When we arrived, they were out, but the girl at the counter let us know they were baking some more and they would be ready in about 15 minutes. While we waited, we ordered a chai latte and a mocha and enjoyed a raspberry-poppy seed scone, all of which were perfectly flavored. They have a good selection of pastries and every one I've tried has been tasty. When the croissants were finally ready (took about 25 minutes in reality), my boyfriend realized it was well worth the wait. They may have been particularly good because they were hot out of the oven, but oh my god, they were amazing. Flaky, buttery, sweet, with a healthy amount of ham and molten cheese inside, it was the perfect breakfast treat. We seriously debated walking back to get more while they were hot. I really recommend this place if you have a some time to spend to fully enjoy it. I can see the wait time being a bit of a bother for someone in a hurry. read more

My husband & I have made a point of exploring all croissant bakeries in the western PNW -and this is- HANDS DOWN- the best place! We recently even visited France and discovered that many times the Bread Peddler croissant beat what we tasted there! Everything the Peddler does is of the highest quality- breads, soups, sandwiches, pastries! We live in Seattle, but always plan our our trips so we can stop here- sometimes ordering ahead to take goodies home. I see some folks have been unhappy with the staff/counter service, but we have had only good to great experiences with the staff- they have always been welcoming, helpful, and clearly working hard to serve everyone as quickly as possible as their line can get long at times....especially on Farmer Market Days. I enjoy coming here whenever I find myself in downtown Oly. The breakfast here is delicious. Everything you order tastes fresh and the portions are decent. I am continually impressed with the variety of bread and pastries that are available. My only complaint is that I wish this place stayed open longer, I'd love to be able to come by in the late afternoon for tea or a scone! I keep coming back because they have good food and coffee, but every time I question why because the staff is always very rude, and they usually forget either my drink or my husband's. Today they forgot my coffee and frittata, to the point where I just cancelled the order because they kept saying "next ticket up" over the course of an hour. We love to stop in to The Bread Peddler for a warm bowl of soup. Yesterday we stopped in and truly enjoyed the Vegan Potato Soup and a fantastic Curried Couscous Salad (also Vegan). We have enjoyed the soup before and this was excellent again, BUT the Curried Couscous Salad was incredible. It will definitely be a favorite for us to enjoy. I spoke to the Chef and asked if they could include more vegan options and he was excited to tell us that they have plans for that in the very near future. Can't wait to see what they come up with. The staff are always very friendly and clearly love seeing patrons enjoying their meals. We love sitting in the window to enjoy our food - lots of light and the ability to watch the world go by. I would love to give this place a 5 star, but I just can't. First off, the food is amazing. I love their pasteries (bread pudding), soup and particularly their bacon/cheddar quiche. Also, depending on the barista they can on occassion have the best cup of coffee in town. Now the cons: some of the rudest staff I have ever encountered. I mean super rude! One of the only places in Olympia where you run the risk of being yelled at for no reason by the staff. They will frequently forget your order. Basically they all give out the vibe that they hate being there and anything you ask for is a bother. Worst off I have heard the staff loudy making fun of customers. That is so not okay. Also, you definitely need to have a lot of time to eat here. The line is always long and the service is really slow. I mean I have had to wait 20 minutes for a cup of coffee once. It also helps if you go to eat here with someone else since their isn't a lot of seating. I always order and have the other person hunt for our seats. Overall, if your willing to put up with rude staff and long waits then the food is excellent. read more

First off, this is our 4-5 time coming here. We've come for coffee and pastries during the day and for lunch. Each time the food has been pretty good, fresh, and worth it. Ordering breakfast has been on our list of things to do and we finally did it this morning. Service wise the woman who checked us out didn't even say "Hello" or "How are you?" let alone smile. She said the total and that was it. We ordered their Breakfast plate and Poached Egg on toast. Both sounded delicious. Took 20 minutes to get the food. Once we received it we both cut into our eggs expecting oozing golden yolk to cover our toast. Here's the kicker. After waiting this long the eggs were fully cooked. I saw them just sitting up there, no fresh ones being made to order. I took up our eggs to a hostess and explained they were over cooked and we wanted four to order to finish our meal. We waiting an additional 10 minutes....nothing. No more help, no one over by the pot cooking eggs. We left. BAD Attitude and food DO NOT GO TOGETHER. We left without a fuss but decided to YELP to say that our service from the team there was worse than our overcooked poached eggs. Normally our place to bring out of town guests for delicious pastries and coffee but attitude has always been present. It looks good on the outside, the inside is done well, the staff are dressed professionally but don't let that fool you into buying anything from this place. The menu suggests that the person who wrote it knows the restaurant business and they very well may have a lot of experience. The inside has a rustic and classy look but the employees is where this place is failing. I don't expect to be greeted at the door and have my hand held through how and what to order but if announce that I've never been there I don't think I should get a head nod and a blank stare. I think that if I order a sandwich explicitly from the menu that the response should be "will there be anything else" not "well the croques are really good" followed by an explanation of the process of how it's made, I mean we were already passed that point right? As far as the food is concerned the sandwiches are pre-made with grocery store deli meat and you could see that all of the bread in the displays had been burnt. read more

Service is practically nonexistent, prices seem a little on the high side, and something about the atmosphere just seems vaguely ... uncomfortable. I would realistically give this wonderful spot five stars but the wholly inadequate and decrepit seating just won't support that. But that is all overshadowed by the distinctly singular menu and quality of the food. Soup, sandwiches, salads and deserts all have a creative touch all the way from a Croque Monsieur to roast beef and blue cheese on fresh french bread. This is not a grab-a-bite kind of spot although some do, but a luncheon respite to be enjoyed and savored with friends or family. Don't miss this one...you'll be glad you stopped in. read more
