I ate here today for lunch and it's now officially my new favorite lunch spot. I had the ham and comte sandwich and it was great. Their soup, french press coffee, and pain au chocolat were all amazing as well. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The atmosphere is great, if you don't mind the typical Olympia crowd (if you live in Oly or have been here, you know what I mean). The only drawback is that the restaurant is a little small for the number of customers there (at least on a Saturday afternoon), but you should still come and pick up a pastry to go. Weekend breakfast are incredible in the back of the Peddler Restaurant. Eggs benedict especially the Lox perfectly cooked. Amazing eggs everything's very fresh. Consistently high quality food for the past few years. I'm usually not around to partake in their lunch menu and that's a shame because it's in my Oly top 3. I usually opt for the roast beef/horseradish sandwich and it blows my mind every time. The pastries are pretty amazing, too. They've starting offering dinner service and hit the ball out of the park again. I've had fishcakes and a mushroom/squash ravioli so far: plenty of flavor without being overpowering. The Bread Peddler is my go-to, favorite spot downtown. Great place to grab a quality treat and coffee, sit and read/journal/chat. I love the scones but all the pastries are a sure bet! It's fun to go out for breakfast or brunch here, but it does get quite busy on the weekends. Come early! The staff are professional and courteous, and a there are a few in my mind that definitely go above and beyond in terms of friendliness and doing their job really well. Perfect pain au levain loafs every time. Thick crust, moist chewy center, lots of flavor. I'm obsessed. The co-ops and Spud's carry their bread but they commonly sell out by noon or so. I've dined there several times. I usually order the classic breakfast. Simple breakfast, done right. I can't have dairy, but I have been told by those more fortunate that thier baked goods are flaky and not too sweet. I just wish they had at least one non-dairy or vegan treat. Love all pasties there. Going for years. Now if you are a hot looking guy you will get top notch service. It's like the servers never saw a guy before falling over themselves to serve at the expense of ahem other customers such as myself on line. Service is usually grouchy and with an unwelcoming attitude. Unless you are a cute guy then go for it. Alas my sweet tooth overcomes my self respect as a customer on line awaiting service. Stopped by Olympia for a quick late lunch to-go on our way to Portland, and had a good experience with this bakery/cafe attached to a cute little indoor dining/shopping area during our rest stop. Since the bakery stopped serving hot sandwiches at 3p, we ordered their ham and tomato/chevre cold sandwiches to go. They were flavorful, tasty and filling. The price was reasonable, with $4 for a half-sandwich, $9 for a full sandwich (the long baguette sandwiches are large and as a classic french-style baguette sandwich, they are big on flavor with a slim layer of filling on high-quality bread, versus a more dense, heavily overstuffed style sandwich). The server was friendly and helpful to our requests, and the atmosphere seemed happy and laid-back on a bright summer day. Overall, would recommend for picking up a tasty lunch! read more

The food here is great. I really enjoy the pastries (chocolate croissants, ham and cheese croissants, chocolate corkscrews, etc...) and I always get their croque-monsieur for lunch. My husband is the more adventurous type and has eaten at least everything that they've had on their menu with no complaints on the food. That being said, the service here is really awful. They're slow, unresponsive, and everyone seems to have a serious attitude problem. My husband was so upset that he said a few weeks ago that he never wants to go back. I've noticed that there is a difference between weekday service and weekend service. I've had good experiences with their service on the weekdays and only bad experiences on the weekends. If you don't mind dealing with rude people or just want to pop in and grab some pastries to go The Bread Peddler is worth it. read more

I have not had many eat-in experiences here--frankly, have never wanted to stick around. The folks behind the counter are not the friendliest, perhaps they're a bit cocky because they know you're gonna want their amazingly delicious treats whether they're nice to you or not. Don't expect smiles, thank yous, or politeness. But, nevertheless, you will not find more delicious croissant, tuna sandwiches, french onion soup...you name it...anywhere else close by. someone should teach this restaurant owner how to cook a bowl of borscht. A red mushy paste with no discernible cabbage or vegetables and big chunks of stew meat is a poor excuse for a bowl of borscht. This place bills itself as a "french" restaurant on Facebook, but I see no connection. Bread? Sure, that's french, French Bread is french, but not the chewy whole grain stuff, that's more of an Eastern European bread. And if you charge over $7 for a bowl of soup, it should have some character. No dollop of sour cream or fresh herbs in sight. read more

My husband and I wandered in here at 10:50. I ordered soup and was told soup wasn't served until 11:00, and wasn't even offered a "you can order it now but it won't be ready for 10 minutes" or anything. At 10:58, someone in line tried to order a breakfast item and was told it wasn't available since it was after 11:00. You'd think they'd be a little more flexible for paying customers. More importantly, an employee climbed up on the counter to water plants. This is the counter where food sat, waiting to be paid for, and also the counter where fresh bread was stored. We assumed the counter would be immediately wiped down, but it never happened. So gross. I forgot to mention- the $3.50/cup orange juice is just Kirkland Organic Orange Juice. I mean come on, at least put it in a different container so I don't feel like I'm getting completely ripped off. Nope, it was pulled out of the fridge in the plastic gallon jug and poured right in front of me. read more

This was my first time to the Bread Peddler and it will probably be my last. It was busy when I arrived, I wanted to order the classic breakfast and I was told that their chef wasn't there so I couldn't order breakfast. I ordered a hot chocolate to go and it took over 10 minutes to get it. It certainly wasn't a great first impression. read more

Soo my experience was ruined by the manager.. I was going to get lunch.. but I made the mistake of inquiring about their hiring status. I was promptly shooed out of line, given a speech about common sense and not to ask those kinds of questions during their rush hour (there was one couple ahead of me, and nobody in line behind me) then asked (more like told) to leave. A second trip, where I was stuck between two choices and was told to hurry my decision up confirmed that I will never be returning. Look lady, you're not in Manhattan. You're not serving Michelin starred food. This is Olympia. Their okay food is not worth dealing with that witch and her monkeys behind the counter. read more

Love. The. Food. The evening menu is a major treat. Beef Bourguignon? Delicious. I'm not a pate lover but theirs is excellent. Fresh made ravioli is a taste treat... and there are more tasty opportunities. Have been back two more times. Table service has a slight discontinuity. Friendly but three different servers for our table was confusing. Maybe they are new to meals served like in a regular restaurant. Evenings have a different vibe from the day. We'll definitely go back but hope they get the service a bit smoother and more organized. Also hope they get their website updated. They don't have their evening menu on it or hours. We heard by word of mouth about the Thursday - Saturday offerings. Good words out there but if you're doing a search- you're stuck. Chaotic, crowded and overpriced but good food. I've gone here 3 times now and have always had the same feeling afterward. Satisfied tummy but wishing the atmosphere and the service matched the price. Although the interactions that I had with staff members the other morning are an improvement to the last 2 visits, there is still a lot lacking. Service means setting expectations and asking if anything else was needed when you finally drop off the food. Honestly, panera treats their customers better... Hopefully this place can really work out their issues because I really enjoy their classic breakfast. read more

I'm not sure what's happened to the Peddler in the last two years, but the service needs a lot of improvement. Every time I've gone in the last two years, it's been nothing short of underwhelming and outright rude. From the barista refusing to answer my husband's question of where he can get some silverware ("I'm busy here. You can ask at the counter." The counter is next to the barista.......) to getting ignored when my husband went to pick up pies for our wedding (we ordered 10 pies) to getting a $6 slice of cake thrown in a takeout box that was too small and smashed shut, what gives? The bread is great. The pies are great. The food is great. But there are a lot of other bakeries in town with great bread, pies, food, AND helpful human beings behind the counter. read more

I'd happily give the food itself a much higher rating, if not for the staff, and the fact that you never know if you're going to get a half sandwich or a full sandwich for $9 or whatever the price is that day. We do go there frequently, but honestly it's only because there are so very few places around Olympia to get a quality sandwich (that is, one that doesn't seem like it's concocted from cheap restaurant supply "food.") So, at least Bread Peddler produces high quality food. But their hipster staff needs to cut the attitude and acknowledge that there are people standing at the counter, instead of looking through them and saying nothing as they disappear into the back for whatever reason, floating around in slow-motion. Also, several times I've questioned the size of the sandwich, and have been told by the snotty hipster behind the counter that that's the usual size, when I KNOW that usually they're twice the size. I'm not one to bicker and demand the manager, and usually I'm on my way someplace and don't have time to go someplace else by the time I've actually gotten the attention of someone behind the counter, but clearly this inconsistency isn't cool. Also, whenever I go in by myself and order, say, 3 sandwiches and 5 cookies, they look at me like I'm from another planet. It doesn't occur to them that maybe I'm buying sandwiches for other people, and going to freeze the cookies for later - not that it's any of their damn business - aren't they in the business of selling food? You'd think they'd be HAPPY to see someone come in and order more than one cookie! And YES, I also want a damn bag! Clearly they're not geared to serve anyone anything more than a slice of tart and a coffee, but for those of us who do order more than 1 or 2 items to go, YES - we need a bag to carry it! I've been here a few times now. It is a must do side trip from Yelm when I'm in the area visiting my kids. Enjoyed the coffee, but the pastries are outstanding. Had the blueberry almond bread today. Moist, just the right amount of berries on top, yummy. My daughter had the apple fritter today. I've had that in the past. It is Not heavy and doughy as is all too common. Here, they are tasty apple flavor with just the right texture and sugar load. read more

No complaints here. Stopping in with several other people, I got a chance to sample multiple things off the menu during my one trip. Everything was super fresh, tasty, unique. My only disappointment was that they were already out of the tuna nicoise sandwich that I was so hoping for in the first place. Several of the sandwich options are pre-made... so when they're gone, they're gone. Mental note, if it's pre-made sandwich you want.... get there earlier! Good just for coffee too! read more

Before I explain why I gave this place two stars, I want to say how much I really do love the food here and the crepes are what keep me coming back. However, I gave this restaurant such a low score because of the fact that they never have all of there ingredients and the service quality is low. I have been to this creperie a handful of times and recently I went on a Sunday for brunch. They were out of orange juice, and for a group of four they were out of three people's main ingredients for their dish. I went again three days later because my sister was in town and I wanted her to try the crepes, however they were out of Nutella, which is a huge ingredient on their menu and they were out of an ingredient for my crepe again! Both times the servers did not take fault, nor take anything off of my bill and made it seem like we were the inconvenience for being there at a busy time. I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years and customer service is a huge part of my job today. I live by the line that the customer is always right, but it is not the case at this restaurant. I really do love this place, but the next time I go I'm going to call and make sure they have the ingredients I want for my crepe! read more

I've never had anything at the Bread Peddler I didn't love. Beyond the outstanding French breads, it sells my favorite sandwich of all time - the Tuna Niçoise. Other personal favorites are the gougères, meringues, the croque-madame, and the gâteau Basque. It's true the service can be a little lackadaisical and the layout is awkward, but it's all very worth it in the end. read more
