I love Brown Barrel so when I heard we were getting one in Frankfort I was so excited! So tonight my husband and I decided to visit the new location. The atmosphere and service was fantastic, we could tell our server was a little nervous but she played it off well and was very helpful. However, our food.....was not what we were expecting. The chicken in my picatta was soggy and undercooked and the sauce hadn't been reduced so it was very soup like. The flavor however was there so I brought it home, reduced the sauce (made my own chicken) and it was delicious! My husband's crab cakes however were crisp on top, soggy on the bottom, and undercooked on the inside. He ended up leaving it. Overall it was an enjoyable experience....just not an enjoyable meal. This restaurant is in a great location in scenic downtown Frankfort, Kentucky. It's located only about a mile and a half from Buffalo Trace Distillery (5 minute drive). So it's a perfect place to grab lunch on a bourbon tour. The inside has a rustic feel with plenty of seating and TVs for watching games etc. The service was friendly and we were seated very quickly. Now to the food, I chose the strip steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. I did not enjoy the mashed potatoes. They were very bland and I'm also biased because I just generally dislike mashed potatoes with skins in them. I wish they offered a baked potato option for people that don't like mashed potatoes or mashed potatoes with skins in them. The mashed potatoes need more flavor ...salt, pepper, butter. Def need work. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium, but I definitely would request it without that wine sauce next time. The wine flavor was really prominent and I didn't care for the taste. The steak itself was great! The green beans were good too! They are the classic southern style comfort food green beans. So if you don't like the slow cooker style green beans, you may not like these. I was worried they would be those crisp green beans and I was glad they weren't. We also ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with fries and both were excellent options! Our appetizer was the fried grouper fingers and those were a solid choice. The sweet tea is really good!!! Definitely recommend. I actually thought the sweet tea was water until I tasted it. The red cups they use threw off the color and had me thinking that I was served water instead of tea. ‍ The manager came around asking if everything was okay and if the steak was cooked correctly and I thought that was nice. Shows they care about your experience. Our waitress Janet was really attentive as well. Food was served quickly and drinks stayed filled. All in all, this is a great addition to downtown Frankfort and a solid spot to grab lunch or dinner with prices ranging from super cheap around $10 to $30. So nothing crazy expensive. read more

After visiting the Buffalo Trace distillery, we located The Brown Barrel using Yelp, since we were hungry and it was close by with good reviews. We arrived around 3pm in the afternoon and had the place practically to ourselves. Grouper Wrap was the lunch special, which I ordered with brussel sprouts -- it was huge and absolutely delicious. My friends each ordered a burger with tots and to see three grown men swooning over their burgers was a sight to see. Our service was outstanding. Indefinitely plan on returning! read more

I arrived in Kentucky on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 from Las Vegas, Nevada to attend a funeral for my cousin on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. He was a long time resident of Frankfurt, Kentucky. After I arrived in town on Tuesday, I was starving and there aren't many places to eat. I drove around looking for a restaurant and saw that this parking lot was full so it clearly was the place to be. In addition, it looked like one of the only restaurants open that I could find. The hostess greeted me warmly and was very nice with excellent service. I love live music and there was a live band playing in one of the rooms so I wanted to sit there. The room was packed and the only table available was a large table that sits about 6 people in the back of the room by the window. I sat at the corner of the table to leave space just in case other people might want to sit at the table since the room was packed. There were one or two white, female servers who refused to acknowledge me or serve me. I know the place was busy, but one white, female waitress went to the table right next to mine to take their order and didn't say she would be right back, or greet me, or anything. I was completely ignored. After sitting for a few minutes and being ignored by the waitress(es), the hostess eventually came back and asked me if a server had taken my order yet. When I said, 'no', she took my order. Later, a group of three female customers came in and asked me if they could join my table and of course I said they could. The white, female waitress warmly greeted them and told them after she cleaned another table off, they could switch tables. The women wanted to stay at the table with me as I overheard one mention it was a little quieter in the back (so they could talk to each other) and it was by the large window. I took a picture of my food with I guess the drink menu so I could get a photo with the name of the restaurant to remember it by. One of the women at the table asked the waitress if there was a drink menu. Instead of asking if I was finished with the menu or addressing me, she grabbed the menu that was on the table in front of me (the menu was closed so I wasn't using it), again ignored me, and handed it to the women. The treatment by the white, female waitress(es) really set a negative tone. I was probably the only Asian female in the place, from what I could tell. I felt I was being discriminated against for either not being a local and/or for being Asian. I definitely was not welcomed there, I was ignored, and I felt the racism. One customer at the table in front of me even glared at me like I had 3 heads. The food was fabulous (I had the blackened catfish and a side of mashed potatoes) and the hostess (black, female) was warm and friendly and had great customer service, but the treatment from the waitress Karen(s) ruined it for me. If you're from out of town and/or Asian, the Karen(s) don't want you there. I was so upset because the way I was treated, I paid at the cash register, thanked the hostess, and let her know the waitress(es) wouldn't even serve me. I wrote a tip on my credit card for over 20% that I hope went to the hostess because she deserved it. read more

It was a busy Friday night lots of hustle and bustle going on around town. We stopped in at the Brown Barrel for dinner our waiter MJ was wonderful. I had the burger my husband had the fish. MJ warned us the kitchen might be slow because it was so crowded but in reality our food was there in no time plus it was cooked perfect and that is a treat since I eat my food well done. I highly recommend if you are downtown stop in for an appetizer or a meal you won't be disappointed. read more

Service was better than our experience at BB's nearby Midway (Ky) restaurant, tho the waitress was prone to over-familiarizing. At about 30 yrs my junior, the sweethearts, darlins, dears, and gratuitous smile felt way overdone. Food was good, but took way too long to get to our table -- during which time they could've taken a few seconds to wipe off the greasy fingerprints and smudges on plate and bowl rims (ick). Even the flatware didn't look entirely clean. I was very disappointed too that there'd been no upgrades or changes made to the previous restaurant tenant's space now occupied by BB. Still felt like the borderline grimy eatery it was before -- and for BB's pricier menu?!? I'd expected more than BB just plunking down their concept into a conveniently pre-existing restaurant space, without the slightest bit of attention paid to atmosphere and cleanliness. read more

okay to start we walk in and no one else is in there so that's nice no wait but after that it was just down hill our server was enthusiastic and had a good energy but also told us that even though he took our order first he was going to put the table of three that came in a bit after our part of 8's order in before ours because they are less people... kids weird if you ask me. now on to food me and two others from my party got the fish and chips and let be tell you the fish had absolutely no flavor at all no matter how many lemons we put on there it was gross and way over priced for the quality the rest of our part wasn't very happy with their food either. we also had a leak from the ceiling right next to our table so that wasn't very nice. also the staff here should be in a uniform it looks very unprofessional read more
