Cajun burger and sweet potato fries
    Meg C.

Solid burger and good sweet potato fries that were actually crispy on the outside! The onion string fries were tasty but salty, so we had a hard time finishing them. Stellar service, our server was new but very friendly and helpful, I loved her vibe. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I am a huge dog lover, so I really appreciated all the dog pictures everywhere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Would return again when I'm in the Ipswich area and in the mood for some friendly pub fare.

There's not too many choices in Downtown Ipswich, but doesn't mean there aren't good. This place has huge portions at great prices. The Fried Chicken BALT (bacon, avocado, lettuce, and tomato) was very delicious. The fried chicken was huge, but not heavy/oily feeling. Wish the sweet potato fries were a little bit crispier though. And the Ruben on ciabatta, great flavor and the fries were a little bit salty (my opinion, bf thought it was perfectly seasoned)

Dined here recently and had a great experience. Food and service were both on point. Got a burger and Cobb salad and both were excellent. Also got the pretzel app that was really good as well. Menu has something for everyone. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

    Fish and chips

We went to the Brown Dog for lunch as we were passing through and wanted some seafood. It was pretty empty close to noontime. We were greeted by a bartender who immediately had an attitude. She was on her phone and we waited while she finished. We both ordered the fish and chips and a few other customers came in. We were brought our lunch and I noticed right away that the breading on the fish was thick and gooey inside. When the wait person came back I showed her my fish. She indignantly responded that "it's European fish and chips which is different from American. It says it on the menu so that's what it is". I said ok but checked the menu on my phone. Wrong. The menu just stated beer battered fish and chips. I told her that when she came back. Again more attitude and she said that people love the fish. We didn't. When she brought the bill I again showed her my fish and said it wasn't right. She started arguing again with me. I said it was the worst fish and chips we ever had, which was the truth. She took a step back from our table and began screaming at me that I didn't tell her I couldn't eat it and she could have brought me something else. She made such a scene it was unbelievable. I was quiet as she ranted, as this was not acceptable behavior. Worst restaurant experience I have ever had. I noticed other poor reviews of the fish and the bartender/waitresses' horrible service so hopefully something will be done.

A nice neighborhood restaurant. Love the ambiance here, feels like you are at someone's living room. Food? Meh. I opted for the clam chowder, sweet potato fries, and buffalo wings. I'm almost 99% sure that they come out of a freezer bag. Nothing wrong with it, but I guess I expected the ingredients being more fresh or some creative home cooking. The servers are all very nice and friendly. They seem to get regulars here, since it's a small town. I will probably opt for the seafood restaurant down the street next time I visit this town. During my recent visit, that seafood place was too crowded and people were there to watch Sunday footballs and ain't leaving. Street parking available. It's free and unlimited in Sundays. Otherwise it's 1-hour street parking.

This is usually a hit or miss. It's ok but not outstanding. It's a decent place to go for a drink and dinner if you are in the area.

Even the coleslaw and tartar sauce were made with care. The servers hustle like crazy. They treat you like good friends. Some diners may have frowned on service. Those girls never stopped, and they smiled and laughed. (Who doesn't need that these days?) It's sea scallop season, so even those scallops are expensive I had to do it. The scallop dinner w/fries and onion strings was a bit over $35, but there were 14 huge, right off the boat succulent scallops. The burgers also looked great. Get on over there.

You can tell the regulars get priority attention from the bartenders, but we eventually got taken care of too - just be prepared to be patient if it's busy and you're a new face. The food was good with very generous portions that definitely give you your money's worth. Drinks were well-made and hit the spot. We loved the setup for watching football - great views of the games from multiple angles around the bar. **Important heads-up: This is a CASH ONLY establishment.** Make sure you stop at an ATM before you arrive, or you'll be making a quick exit to find one. The vibe here is very much old-school local pub - if that's your scene, you'll love it. If you're looking for something more polished or trendy, this might not be your spot. We enjoyed the unpretentious atmosphere and will likely be back, but it's definitely worth knowing what you're walking into first. Bottom line: Come for honest pub fare, generous portions, cold drinks, and a genuine local experience. Just bring cash!

The staff are friendly and the servers knowledgeable and efficient. The hostess had trouble finding our reservation (my companion was already seated) but it seemed to be quite busy that Friday night. The restaurant consists of quite a few separate rooms and we were seated in one that was not too crowded. (I walked through the bar on my way in and that was hopping.) I had a glass of sauvignon blanc and after studying the menu and consulting our server my companion and I both went for a burger. There was no problem with my swapping out the french fries for onion rings (points there!). The burgers were done exactly to our liking (mine mediume rare, hers medium well). I should have turned down dessert, I was that full, but my companion was willing so we went for it. There was a good selection of typical New England desserts and we finally settled on a blueberry crisp topped with vanilla ice cream which was good but not great (not sure I can put my finger on why, so it may be that I was too full to enjoy it). There is a parking lot although it is not paved so was not fun walking through at the end of a day when it clearly had rained. It also could use some lighting. This is a wonderful restaurant suitable for a special occasion or an ordinary night out. I will definitely be back.

When you walk in, the place is beautiful- sort of modern rustic chic with beautiful string lights. We ordered mussels and wine to start. Mussels were fantastic. Meaty, flavorful and plenty for everyone. The entree is where it fell short for me. I got the shrimp pasta. While the flavor was there, when I cut into the shrimp they still looked pretty translucent to me. After eating one and cutting up a few others, I felt that they were undercooked. The waitress said they wouldn't cook them more but she could bring the plate back and ask if they were cooked through. My plate came back and I was told they were cook so I sat there pushing soft, nasty shrimp around my plate while just eating spaghetti. My boyfriend asked for a medium burger and it was definitely rare to medium rare. When this happens, generally you offer to bring out new protein cooked again or ask if the guest wants something else but I was just left to feel like I was nuts. Whatever, into dessert. Now for dessert, I thought we'd try the cookies and ice cream. cookies were completely raw ( not just soft) and also not hot and the ice cream on the plate looked like it was pre scooped and refrozen. While I loved the concept of this place. Relaxing getaway where you can just do it all onsite, I honestly would spare yourselves the experience of the restaurant or order fish and chips or fried chicken) and just dine in Newburyport.
