There's not too many choices in Downtown Ipswich, but doesn't mean there aren't good. This place has huge portions at great prices. The Fried Chicken BALT (bacon, avocado, lettuce, and tomato) was very delicious. The fried chicken was huge, but not heavy/oily feeling. Wish the sweet potato fries were a little bit crispier though. The reason I can't love this place is the menu. It's way too pubby with lots of frozen product on the menu. So much of the menu just doesn't appeal to me. When we do go we end up eating the same few items. There is a basic cocktail menu and a full bar so you can get anything. However some speciality cocktails ideas would be nice. I find that restaurants with speciality cocktail menus offer more consistent tasting cocktails. So wish they would upscale the menu a bit, vary the menu a bit, add some freshly made items. We'd go more often if there were more than 2 items that appealed to us. Yes we could always get burgers or pizza but we eat that all the time. read more

I loved it. We went after a beach day at Crane Beach. I found them using Google and reading reviews here on Yelp. Our party myself, my wife and 3 kids. My sons (11 and 13) ordered burgers. I took a bite (they were so big one kid couldn't finish his)... great burger. My daughter (age 9) got the kids chicken fingers. All kids had the fries. My wife had steak and side salad, she loved it. I have a sausage and garlic pizza. I Loved it. Friendly service. Attentive on water and my diet coke refills. Reasonable priced. We go to Crane Beach a few times a summer. We went to the Brown Dog for lunch as we were passing through and wanted some seafood. It was pretty empty close to noontime. We were greeted by a bartender who immediately had an attitude. She was on her phone and we waited while she finished. We both ordered the fish and chips and a few other customers came in. We were brought our lunch and I noticed right away that the breading on the fish was thick and gooey inside. When the wait person came back I showed her my fish. She indignantly responded that "it's European fish and chips which is different from American. It says it on the menu so that's what it is". I said ok but checked the menu on my phone. Wrong. The menu just stated beer battered fish and chips. I told her that when she came back. Again more attitude and she said that people love the fish. We didn't. When she brought the bill I again showed her my fish and said it wasn't right. She started arguing again with me. I said it was the worst fish and chips we ever had, which was the truth. She took a step back from our table and began screaming at me that I didn't tell her I couldn't eat it and she could have brought me something else. She made such a scene it was unbelievable. I was quiet as she ranted, as this was not acceptable behavior. Worst restaurant experience I have ever had. I noticed other poor reviews of the fish and the bartender/waitresses' horrible service so hopefully something will be done. read more

We came in on a Saturday afternoon around 3:30 pm after a day at Crane Beach with our party of seven - (4) adults, (2) 2yo, & (1) 6mo. We selected this restaurant after a Google search of places nearby and deciding that the kids menu here would be the best for our picky toddlers & that from what we know about traditional pubs both here and abroad, they're very kid friendly during daylight hours. We had a mostly pleasant meal and enjoyed the good food, although we chose somewhat basic fare. Sandwiches, salads, house made chips, sweet potato fries, regular fries, etc. were all tasty. Our server (Kelly) was attentive & the younger server with the dark hair was quite sweet as well. That being said, we unfortunately will not be returning after the rude comments and intensely unwelcoming attitude from one of the other servers there. She was sort of strawberry blonde, maybe mid 20s I would guess, and very clearly hates young children. She happened to deliver my 2 year old's kids meal and when he made a slight sound of excitement at a reasonable volume, she scolded him and said "hey, your food is here now, you don't need to yell, this is a restaurant" and walked away. Incredibly rude and uncalled for, as he was not being loud or disruptive. Even if he had been too loud, it is absolutely not her place to scold a stranger's child when the parents are handling the behavior themselves. The 3 adults sitting at the table (1 was in the restroom with the second 2yo) all looked at each other stunned like "what the heck was that??" but attempted to move on and gave her the benefit of the doubt of perhaps being socially awkward and not knowing how to interact with children. Then throughout our meal, she proceeded to stand at the POS station nearest our table and loudly sigh, huff & puff, scowl at us, roll her eyes, etc. several times, obviously irritated by the mere presence of children. Our kids were eating and minding their own business. They were not being unruly. They stayed in their seats and kept a normal conversational volume. We could hear the conversations of other diners several tables away, as well as a group of patrons chatting at the bar. You would expect a certain amount of noise from a pub on a Saturday evening, and our table was doing nothing out of the ordinary to warrant her scornful and condescending attitude. After we had paid our check and as we were packing up our leftovers and organizing our belongings to head out, the toddlers did start to get a bit silly. We quieted them down and were clearly making moves to exit, and of course the girl with the nasty attitude takes it upon herself to rush over to our table, loudly and sarcastically demand "do you guys need help with anything?" as I'm picking up our backpack and my child to walk out the door. I responded "no thanks, we're good" yet she proceeded to hover and stare as if she thought we would steal the furniture on the way out or something. In retrospect, I should have told her "just with your nasty attitude" but I decided to be the bigger person. I really regretted that decision a moment later when she was holding the front door wide open and scowling at us as we exited only to forcefully slam the door shut the instant my foot crossed the threshold. She didn't even wait for my infant daughter's carrier to be out of the way, and I had to jump to the side in order for her not to be caught by the edge of the door. I am absolutely appalled and disgusted by the behavior of this young woman. We dine out frequently and have NEVER experienced such rotten mistreatment. Had she been our server, we would have gotten up and walked out the second she started with the rude comments. Are our kids perfect? No, of course not. But they certainly didn't do anything to deserve whatever the heck that nonsense was. I have absolutely no clue what sparked her hatred. We hadn't been exceptionally loud (we put a stop to any excess noises the toddlers were making, the baby didn't cry once), we weren't there with kids past a reasonable hour (we left around 5pm), nor were we hogging a large table for too long when there was a wait (there was plenty of open tables), and we cleaned up after ourselves (we always pick up any bits of food our kids drop). The worst part was she wasn't even our server, ours was completely fine. This girl just felt the need to intentionally disturb our meal and make us feel very uncomfortable as opposed to just avoiding us if she truly had an issue for whatever reason. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Anyway, the moral of the story here is DO NOT let the robust children's menu or multiple high chairs at this place fool you. There's a decent chance you and your children will be met with this judgemental "gem" complete with her snarky remarks, dirty looks, and disdain for the mere existence of families.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Unfortunate for this business and the rest of the staff that one bad apple ruined the experience for what would have been repeat customers. read more

A nice neighborhood restaurant. Love the ambiance here, feels like you are at someone's living room. Food? Meh. I opted for the clam chowder, sweet potato fries, and buffalo wings. I'm almost 99% sure that they come out of a freezer bag. Nothing wrong with it, but I guess I expected the ingredients being more fresh or some creative home cooking. The servers are all very nice and friendly. They seem to get regulars here, since it's a small town. I will probably opt for the seafood restaurant down the street next time I visit this town. The chili tastes like someone just opened a container of salt over it and poured it in. The server said she'd bring me another water. Nope. She never visited our table again. I can't believe this was my first time at The Brown Dog considering my sister lives right across the street! Our server was so friendly and attentive! We made a reservation for 5 outside and were seated right away. We enjoyed the White Sangria which was not too sweet, not too boozy, very refreshing! We all enjoyed our entrees tremendously! Everything was served hot and came out all at once. I haven't had salmon in over two years and this just totally satisfied my out of the blue craving; perfectly cooked with a nice crunch and the asparagus was also tender and perfectly seasoned, the wild rice was just the right compliment. My sister raves about the stuffed shrimp which were stuffed with crabmeat and crumbs and also came along with the same rice and asparagus. My niece was loving her turkey melt and took home half, it was huge! My picky little one loved the pizza and had enough to take home some for a little lunch tomorrow! We all enjoyed the peanut butter pie which was the perfect, sweet and salty balance! The staff are the best!!! We came in on Sunday afternoon and had the best service. We asked a lot of questions, I needed to know what was gluten free and what was not. She was patient and kind. We ordered the mango jalapeño spiced wings and they were wonderful. I got the bbq special 1/2 roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and asparagus. It had a chipotle rub that if you like it you'll love it. I don't love chipotle but it was very good. My friend ordered the 1/2 roasted chicken off the menu with thyme. Hers was much more my style. Very good. My other friend ordered the mussels in white wine sauce. She loved it and even finished off the broth. I don't recommend it but she's unique!!!! We all enjoyed our meal and again the staff who took care of us was nothing but kind in handling all of our requests and accommodations. I wish this place was around the corner from me. So we are frequent patrons of the Brown Dog and love it but tonight I was impressed even more than usual. Brought my kiddos (8 & 11) along and they ordered hot chocolate (they said we have ordered before...who knew). Anyway, the did not have hot chocolate and instead of just telling us that, which I would have been okay with, they went to the closest store to see if they could get some and when that did not work they made some themselves...if that is not amazing customer service I don't know what is. Ordered a cheese pizza...pretty basic. Was more than $11/$12. Ok now big deal. My wife ordered a steak and cheese sub and fries. We were told curbside pick up in 40 mins. (Curbside as in covid-19...so I get there are barriers and difficulties). We get the food after 60 mins total time. The pizza is roughly 6-7" in diameter. As in the full size was 6". The French fries that I ordered well done were cold and soggy and soft. My wife's steak and cheese were stone cold, and we live only 4 mins from the restaurant. Overall kind of disgusted with the food. $32 for a small sub, small pizza, cold steak and cheese and soggy French fries. The server was super friendly and courteous and apologized for the long wait, kiersten was her name I think. The small restaurant section seemed like it would be quaint to have dinner in- but I would not return based on the prices and portion sizes. They definitely do not correlate. I understand that times are tough and you are limited to take out, but I think you forgot to cook/include the rest of my pizza... My friend and I were sitting at the bar and I just returned from vacation and was showing her my videos. It was trip to Italy and if there was any sound from the videos it was lovely italian music. Anyway, I was told by Margaret the bartender to turn my phone off. I replied sorry I didn't realize and she went on about pleasing her customers but was arrogant. I thought it was very unprofessional of her to even say that. There were a total of 8 people in the restaurant and no sound from the tv which I would understand if they were trying to hear it. Without a doubt the worst restaurant I have ever been to. calamari appetizer.. god knows what frozen box this came from. three types of rotgut wine..it got worse and worse..flatbread.. again a frozen box item microwaved... paid the bill even tipped to waitress, it was not her fault... left most food on our plates.. one dish was almost edible, fried fish and chips... very forgettable though.. not sure of it was Gortons or not read more

This place is pretty average to low end in terms of quality. The outside appearance looks like it's a more upscale joint, but don't be fooled; the food quality is average at best. We ordered a couple of burgers, with a few extra toppings each. One medium, the other medium well. The food speed was relatively decent, as we got our food in about 15 minutes. In the meantime we were served table bread, though it was pretty low quality white bread you can get at the supermarket. Sadly, the kitchen mixed up our burgers, and mixed toppings/cooking style up between them. After we got our orders adjusted, we enjoyed the food, but it was nothing special. We were comped a slice of cheesecake to make up for the issue, which was a nice gesture. The service was friendly and with a smile, and checked in on us relatively often. They have a deal where you can get a beer or wine plus a burger for $10 flat, excluding toppings. If you like cheap filling food and booze, check this place out. My son ordered chicken Milanese, which is thin egg breaded chicken with herbs and lemon, but he got thick chicken fingers with lemon. They were overcooked. His linguine was dry, overcooked, rubbery and not hot. I got the fish and chips. It didn't taste fresh and it was wildly overcooked. I ate a piece but left half.
