We stayed on Hovey Lake and didn't want the local fried food and a bit of a drive wasn't an issue so we headed out to The Brownstone Inn. Thursday night in the fall they were not too busy in fact we sat right down waitress happily got our drinks and told us about their specials. We decided on the duck tenders app which was yummy! And we split the special Pork Shank dinner. It came with two small shanks very tender with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. The dinner was good but the shank sauce was a bit too sweet and the shanks were a bit small. The ambiance is cozy in fact, we enjoyed it it so much we returned Saturday night. This time we both enjoyed our own meal (as we hiked the Dead River earlier) both of us ordered salmon. I had the basil salmon from the menu and my husband ordered their special cedar planked salmon. Hands down his was much better as the crisp exterior against the moist interior of the salmon was perfect. Pros: Mirissa our server was very nice. Had some fond memories of this place from a small child to a college student on a date. The orders came out correct....but it also took them close to 20 minutes to deliver it. Cons: The food was awful. Zero flavor and you could tell they cooked it in a convection oven. Our check was $34.57......for that we got a Burger, a Cod sandwich, 2 glasses of water and a sliver of cake (to share). The coleslaw was a vinegar based with pickles in it ??? The fish, onion rings and fries were so oil soaked that it was over powering. We had 6 people in our group (and yes, we called ahead).......we were seated within 10 minutes, despite it almost being empty on a Saturday afternoon. Other's in our group also felt that the food was bland, and lacking flavor. Their menu could use some improvement. The building has a great history.......and it's cool looking. But in the past 15 yrs (since my last visit).......the quality is gone. read more

The Brownstone is an adorable little stone house restaurant has caught my eye on several occasions as we drive through Au Train on the shores of Lake Superior. This time, we were nearby at lunchtime, so we decided to stop in. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon and the waitress was very friendly. I enjoyed a tasty prime rib French dip sandwich, accompanied by delicious fresh french fries and coleslaw. My husband had a mushroom soup and salad--said the soup was flavorful but more salty than he cared for. The salad was good (not just iceberg lettuce), as were our kids' meals (grilled cheese, chicken strips, fries, apple sauce). They had some tasty-sounding menu items and I would not hesitate to stop in for another meal. Very good, fresh, and homemade! read more

The mushroom soup was excellent and the whitefish wasn't bad, but it definitely wouldn't make me come back. The waitress was very nice and the keewenaw widowmaker beer was excellent. However, I wouldn't recommend making the trip out to au train to eat here. Try Sydney's instead as they have better food. The restaurant is so cool and has a lot of potential but the food is terrible and over priced. I ate there a few times because of a certain family member who enjoys it there. That being said I have tried a few things on the menu and was dissatisfied every time. I was recently there over the weekend and order a smokey burger. I asked to it to be cooked medium and it came well done. There was nothing smokey about the burger. Other than being dry and having to put a ton of mustard on it. I really hope the owner reads some of these reviews and makes a change. read more

I suggest to the other reviewer to go back and give the food another chance. Two years later I found the food phenomenal. I had duck that was extremely tender and absolutely delicious. Both of my dinner commpanions also loved their food. The salad dressings are homemade and fantastic. I am not a big salad eater but loved every leaf. The lettuce was fresh and crisp, the atmostphere was nice, the main course to die for, wait staff pleasant, and the buiding was really neat. We liked our dinner so much we came back the next day to get lunch. The second day I had Jamaican whitefish and it was amazing. Absolutely delicious. I highly recommend it. read more

I stopped in here for a burger on a snowmobile trip and it was a great burger! One of the best in the area. Its really easy to get to from the snowmobile trails too. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I will likely stop back here next time I am riding through the area. read more

We were very happy with our meals here. The place was packed on a Friday night, which we took as a good sign that it would be good. The woman in charge, who seemed to be an owner was very happy to make room for us, while still honoring the tables that were setup for reservations. Friendly staff. Stopped in here for a good meal because no where in munsing has a nice meal. It was busy but the manager got us drinks and found us a table for us fast.  I tried their fish fry dinner special.  Oh my goodness it was by far the best fist fry I ever had.  It was amazing. With tip I paid $120 for 2 people for dinner. I didn't find much to like except the service was good. I had a filet that was tasteless. Baked potato was good. Hubby had whitefish and he said the smell was strong. The salad was basic, had I glob of shredded carrot on top. The French dressing had bacon bits IN it. Excellent service! Good food! Best place for fine dining in an intimate setting around Munising. I've eaten here with a small group and have thrown a birthday party here for nearly 50 iin their private room. Both times the service was great and the owner was extremely accommodating. For the party, she created a a special menu that had something for everyone. They provided a lovely setting with white linens and a cake serving station. Even when more guests showed up than anticipated the serving staff and owner kept things running smoothly. It was really the perfect setting! Their typical menu is delicious as well. It has the normal lake fish, steaks etc. cooked to perfection, as well as, some yummy vegetarian options. They also have a full bar and pretty good beer and wine list. I definitely recommend this cozy place to anyone who finds themselves in the Munusing/Trenary/AuTrain area! read more

The Brownstone is a nice restaurant that could have a lot of potential. I have eaten there several times over the past 4 years and the food in going down hill fast. I ordered the Walleye piccata, it came poached not sauteed and covered in a watery cooked parsley with one, yes one caper and a lemon was provided. . It was tasteless. 1/2 corn on the cob was over cooked and mushy and baked potato was under cooked. My daughter ordered the NY strip steak, which was full of gristle and about 1/4 " thick and definitely not 10 0z. as advertised, overcooked. All that for $50.00 The waiter looked like a meth head. He was shaking so bad that he broke the cork off the wine bottle. I will not go back, I am tired of wasting money on tasteless food. read more

So, let me begin by saying I have driven by the Brownstone for years traveling and while wanting to try it, never made it in. So perhaps, my expectations were high. We finally stopped for dinner. We didn't have a reservation but the place was half empty. They sort of let us stand around for fifteen minutes until we were seated. It wasn't a big deal to wait, just a weird vibe. We had duck tenders for a start and whitefish for dinner. The fish was a large portion, not overcooked. The salad and sides were unremarkable. The rice was gummy and bland. We got a caramel brownie to go, which was fine. There prices were pretty reasonable and I would go back and give it another try. My biggest complaint was it didn't feel all that welcoming. read more

We went to the Brownstone Inn two nights ago with two adults and two kids. Typical UP pub decor, but a relatively broader menu and a bit more expensive than other places. We had a fried appetizer plate to start and it was meh. Three of us had the whitefish, and it was really fresh and good, though we would have preferred a broiled option instead of lightly fried. The ribeye sandwich was fatty and undercooked, however, so that was a disappointment. Would try the filet next time. Overall, I would say it is decent or good for fish, but one plus that I should mention is that they actually have some decent red wine choices on the menu, and you don't see that up here! read more

We had a wonderful dinner! The food was great, fresh. We were having a good time until we were finishing our after dinner coffee and the waitress came to collect our check and told us "We have another reservation at 6:00", pretty much telling us we had to leave. We weren't even there for the usual time frame they alot for a reservation. We felt that was rude since she could clearly see we would leave soon. This just took the wind out of our sails and ruined the experience for us. Furthermore, she wasn't the friendliest person. On the other hand, the service was fine..till the end! read more
