We were lucky to be staying walking distance from Golden Crown Panaderia. No idea it was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives until we sat down at our table and saw the episode playing. To start, as we came in, we were offered a biscochito to try while we decided on what to order. Honestly, the decision was hard... so many delicious looking things on the menu but finally decided on a salami and provolone sandwich, with green chile bread. Wow! Amazing sandwich, fresh, delicious! While we were enjoying our food, Pratt Morales, the owner and master baker, came out and talked to us for a while. This was a real treat, great positive attitude and love for what he does. He even introduced us to one of his specialties the Turkey shaped bread he makes for Thanksgiving. So popular now he gets hundreds of orders per year. We left with some biscochitos and other cookies to go, and a desire to try more things when we are back in Albuquerque. read more

I tried their "World's Best Coffee Milkshake" ($8.10 for a medium) and it was very rich, creamy, and full of flavor. The service was nice. They let us try a warm biscochito fresh out of the oven! It was buttery, cinnamony, and absolutely delicious. They have other flavors like chocolate, blue corn, and cappuccino. They also had a variety of fruit-filled empanadas that looked and smelled amazing and were all freshly made. Inside seating is limited, but as soon as you walk in, there is a fresh bakery aroma that makes you instantly happy. They also got a self-service kiosk, mobile ordering, or you can just order in person. They also have their own parking lot and the shelves full of different coffee beans for purchase. Crown to Earth Golden Crown Panaderia might be the most celebrated bakery in the whole state of New Mexico, and it was started back in 1972 by a most unlikely person, Pratt Morales. Chef Morales served as an accountant in the Air Force before deciding to dedicate his life to the art of bread-making and the pursuit of yeasty goodness. He and his bakery have been featured in a multitude of magazines like Conde Naste Traveler, NatGeo, and Gourmet magazine, as well as a plethora of TV shows, including Food Network's Food Finds (2004) and their pizzas were featured recently on Guy Fieri's Triple-D (aka Diners, Drive-ins and Dives S18:E7). Had no idea this place was so famous. Driving down the street and it looked interesting so we pulled in. Turns out Guy Fieri featured this bakery on DDD. The owner of 50 years was in here baking on a Sunday at 3:00pm! This is why he is so successful! Old skool and killing it. Green chili bread has a great flavor not hot but the heat just kisses your lips. On the dry side but great. All of the Mexican cookies were good but Mexican baked goods are on the dry side for me. I truly love this place. Came to town for a conference and picked up some treats to take home to L.A. for my mom and myself. Bought the famous green chile bread, which my mom loved, the blue corn biscochitos, and the chocolate ones, then 4 different empanadas. Everything was delicious!! The biscochitos are melt-in-your-mouth crumbly. The folks here are so kind and patient. They handed out a free mini sample of soft serve ice-cream which was soooo good. I received a sample of a traditional biscochito. The barista had accidentally steamed too much milk on an order and offered me a free coffee drink while I waited for my pizza. It was my lucky day! My mocha was delicious. The bakery is very cute and inviting. I'm so glad I made the time to grab some goodies here en route to the airport. Good mix of locals and new visitors. I highly recommend!! We haven't stopped by for a few months and were hugely disappointed when we did! I raved about their sandwiches in a prior review. Much to my dismay, both the roast beef and provolone and the pastrami and provolone were very disappointing. My two dinner companions could only bring themselves to eat 1/2 of those sandwiches. They were glad of that later, as both suffered stomach issues that night. My ham and Swiss was just OK. They were out of pickles! The queso was cold (always warm during prior visits). They no longer serve beer and wine, another disappointment. I hope their pizza is still as good as it used to be. If I can get my friends to give it a try after this disaster. read more

This place is a gem nestled in the neighborhoods of downtown. When I first arrived I thought they may have closed early. Good thing they weren't. The lights in the dinning area were dimmed and makes a relaxing vibe to enjoy your dinner. I ordered a 12" green chili crust pepperoni pizza and 3 biscochitos, chocolate, cappuccino, and original. The pizza 10 out of 10. The green chili crust gives that hidden spice with the pepperoni and cheese slice. Highly recommend getting the green chili crust with whichever pizza tickles your fancy. The biscochitos are a sweet treat afterwards. I would recommend those as well. After talking with the staff, they told me about the history of Golden Crown Panaderia. Then showed me the original oven which they still use today to bake their pastries. They also have on display in the lobby of the presses they use to make their empanadas. I stopped in to grab a coffee and a pastry before I start my day and the staff is very friendly. You definitely have that small hometown bakery vibe when you walk inside and have a wonderful patio outdoors however it was too cold for me to sit out there today, I ordered a blueberry empanada, which Was a delightful surprise. We came, we ate, it conquered. My husband has declared the blue corn biscochito the best he's ever had. We each ordered a sandwich, a coffee and then chose two biscochitos and an empanada to share. The guava empanada was a nice little sweet treat dusted with, I believe, biscochito sugar. The cappuccino biscochito was good but the blue corn one was great and we're still thinking about it hours later. The sandwich combo is a great little meal, with a pickle and chips and queso. What a pleasant surprise!! My sister lives near here and suggested we grab a Golden Crown Combo pizza on green chili crust! We ordered online and then went to pick it up. Super cute place that's been there a long time. There is outside seating. Huge bags of coffee beans as you come in and a couple tables to sit at. Once you come towards the counter you are greeted and the folks working here are really nice, helpful and kind. The display case is filled with tons of biscochitos! Chocolate (amazing), original, cappuccino and blue corn!! As I said above, the chocolate were just fabulous but so were the traditional. I haven't tried the blue corn or cappuccino ones yet. There are also homemade wedding cookies to enjoy too. They also sell bread and some drinks. We picked up our pizza, I got a dozen biscochitos and a Mexican coke. We went home and I thoroughly enjoyed the pizza. The combo comes with pepperoni, sausage, red onions and green bell peppers. Super super good! On a recent Amtrak adventure from CA to Michigan, we got off in Albuquerque to explore. We stayed in an Air B&B, in a quaint neighborhood, close to Old Town. We were delighted to discover this bakery within walking distance of our home. A quick google search will pull up many accolades achieved by this talented father-son baker team. Pratt and Chris are genuine, passionate, interesting small-business owners with big hearts and dreams. While their bakery remains small and local, tucked into the neighborhood and close to their homes, it is one of the brightest spots in Albuquerque. Each item we tried was bursting with flavor, had just the right texture and conjured feelings of comfort. The pizzas have the most delicious, carefully crafted crusts and fresh ingredients. Our sandwiches were filling, with fresh, flavorful bread that makes all the difference. And the sweets..... no words. As an amateur baker, I am awestruck. When food is created and served with love, by people who love life and connecting with others, it shows. Biscochitos are one of my favorite cookies. They melt in your mouth and have a cinnamon sugar outside. I was looking for a place to get some and found this gem. The staff were friendly and I was able to go in and get my cookies. I got 1 dozen original and 1 dozen chocolate and they were delicious. Next time I hope to try the other flavors they have. Meeting up with an artist friend for lunch in ABQ and he said this was the place. The food, service and ambiance were all solid gold! So we decided on a pizza to be split among the three of us---Supreme, with blue corn meal crust, and some jasmine pearl iced teas. The pizza was so good--thin, crisp crust, loaded with fresh toppings and the best sauce, too. We enjoyed the outside covered patio, even if it was 93 degrees outside...it's a dry heat, you know! We talked to the owner, Pratt Morales, and he explained about the business with several humorous anecdotes. Such a great guy, as was his son, Chris. They truly love the baking business! They have the best empanadas ever ! The apricot and pumpkin was fresh and wrapped in like a biscochito cookie with perfect amount of cinnamon sugar . The cookie is also the most popular one they make . The pizzas they make are so New Mexico with blue corn crust and of course green chile and ham . I can see why this place gets all the hype. It's a cute little place with scratch made food, which always tastes better than the commercial processed stuff. We came in around 11am on a Sunday. I don't think this is a good time to come by. There was a group in there when we came in and a couple groups came in after us but it wasn't busy at all and I think they know that because even after only being open about 1 hour, most of the menu was sold out. Luckily, we were able to have lunch and ordered a blue corn crust pepperoni pizza. There is a bit of a wait but they make your pizza fresh so it's worth it. The blue corn crust is amazing with pepperoni, such an interestingly rich flavor profile. The cheese was the perfect amount and we gobbled that thing up like we hadn't eaten in a few days. We also ordered a cherry and a lemon empanada and a dozen plain biscochitos. We didn't try the cookies and empanadas until we got home from our flight that night and they were excellent. I was so surpirsed at the taste. Never had anything like that before and I loved it. My parents got some too and they were disappointed I didn't buy more. The empanadas seem to be made from the same dough and that made them even better than the pie dough like ones from other places. Great tasting fillings that were also fairly plentiful. The service was really nice here too. There are kiosks you order from, or the QR code at your table. You can also order from a vending machine 24 hours outside the door. After a good breakfast time to have dessert. We stopped here for sweets. You can't miss the building - it's well marked. Small gravel parking lot that had some spots available. It's difficult to navigate to the entrance if you have mobility issues. Really small store with 4-5 tables to enjoy a pastry & coffee. The bakery area is equally small, the cases are almost exclusively filled with biscochitos. Turnovers, empanadas & danishes are hidden from view. We ordered an apricot & lemon empanada from an iPad on the counter. They were delicious, well stuffed & small, but not made with excessive crust in the side. The crust was good - maybe made with biscochito dough? I could taste just a hint of pepper. They also have pizzas on the menu, we're going to have to go back for one of those (biscochito too). I visited Golden Crown Panaderia with high expectations after seeing it featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but unfortunately, my experience was nothing like what I had hoped for. From the moment my fiancé and I walked in, the person at the front--who I assume was the owner--was extremely unpleasant. He made it clear they were short-staffed and offered very few options to choose from, which was disappointing right off the bat. I decided to try the wedding cookies and an empanada, but both were incredibly disappointing. The cookies were so hard I could barely bite into them, and they had absolutely no flavor. The empanada wasn't any better--it tasted off and was just not enjoyable at all. Honestly, if I could give zero stars, I would. I'm honestly shocked by all the good reviews because my experience was far from it. The place didn't seem well-kept, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Where they missed the mark, the pie. Those who know me know that nothing peeves me more than stinginess on the cheese. Especially when I ask for extra cheese which I did! The pie I got had a paper thin layer of cheese that poorly held the toppings. It even had bald spots. The cheese bread I got was the only saving grace at this point. The sad part is that I saw more these on the cheese bread than I did on the pie. I'm sorry to say I think next time I wanna get a pie I'll probably pass on this one. 3.5 stars My visit on Friday was an effort in patience for sure. I remember when Blake's had Golden Crown's biscochitos in a shake last holiday season that I sadly missed. So when a Facebook ad appeared for biscochito milkshakes earlier in the month, I knew that this was my chance. So, I ordered on the kiosk and as I was waiting, I heard them say they had run out of ice cream. They spent a few minutes trying to find soft serve mix and the option was either to get a refund or wait, so I waited (only about 10 minutes) for my pumpkin soft serve cone. (One of the pet peeves I have lately is being handed an ice cream cone without a napkin or paper wrapper, as if I'm supposed to eat the rest of the cone after touching the kiosks and whatever else). The pumpkin flavor was very subtle. In the meantime, the owner (father) gave a demonstration on how he slices up the dough for biscochitos. Prices were average to a little above average for a cone. There were a few tables inside, with an extensive patio and misters outside, so I opted for the patio. After I finished my cone, I wanted to order a biscochito milkshake to go, only to be told it'd be another 20-30 minutes for the ice cream to firm up further. So I waited on the patio again, but hey, it was my day off and I was procrastinating on chores so why not. When I came back in, I was told the ice cream was ready, but the option on the kiosk said "out of order" (while I looked at my phone outside, it had given me the option to order). The outside cookie ATM also only carries cookies and empanadas in bulk. I tried ordering an apple empanada (as it said it was available on the kiosk), but there were only 3 flavors left available. So, I just stuck with the milkshake. I was told that this day was busier than usual and all of their normal items were wiped out (bread, empanadas, biscos), which is good for them. Service was friendly, although a little slow. I was a little disappointed, as I love to support local, but shouldn't have been a 2 hour excursion.
