THIS PLACE is just epic. The Butcher Shop recently catered the cake and desserts for my "Celebrate Every Year" birthday party and my guests were blown away by the moist, perfectly chocolaty chocolate layer cake, the 'better-than-your-grandma's' banana pudding pie, and the fudge bottom pie that I wanted to take away from the table and eat by myself in my car (but RUDE...so I didn't...but still...delicious!!!). They also brought a variety of fresh-baked cookies featuring M&M sugar cookies, chocolate chip, and what should be WORLD FAMOUS, the big fat scrumptious Russian Rock cookie full of everything that makes Texas great--pecans, chocolate, raisins, just yum (soon as I saw those suckers I put a few in my purse before the party ever started. Don't judge.) And to make my birthday cake table even more epic than I could ever have imagined, Butcher Shop also brought the most beautiful and equally delectable petits fours--they looked too pretty to eat but once you've had a forkful, there's no way you can stop. If you can imagine the best tea cake you've ever had, TBS's petits fours make those taste like dirt. Okay, that's maybe extreme--but seriously, they're moist and just sweet enough to make you tear up with happiness. (Sorry about the picture of the 2 petit fours on the plate, I forgot to take a close-up of the platter when they were on the table so these were the 2 I brought home & I smushed the flowers on top. You're lucky there are any pictures left at all as I'm almost finished eating the purple one right now as I type...#TrueStory) So YES, if you are looking for a special place to cater your event, stop looking. The hamburger topping bar is fun and the burgers are decent. The variety of the desserts is awesome. It's fun to look at all the desserts. Most of the desserts I've tried are pretty good. I've had a couple very dry cupcakes (stay away from the chocolate ones- both times I got that type it was so over baked). The cookies are always good. The pies are just ok. The place was very dirty. Wet spots on the floor, mayonnaise or something on the bar untensils, dirty tables. The drink station was a mess. No sweet tea, no water and the Dr. Pepper was mostly carbonated water. They have always been known for their great burgers, but tonight they were so dry that I couldn't even chew & swallow it. Absolutely no flavor. The desserts were great as usual, but I won't be going there for a meal. They also need to spend some money and replace the floor and remodel the bathroom. read more

Cool place! Very hospitable! I tried the chicken fried steak sandwich which was juicy, tender and incredibly flavorful on a delectable roll which seemed like it was fresh baked. The fixings bar was well maintained and offered A LOT of options for topping your sandwich. The onion rings were some of the best I've ever had! The breading was light but crispy & very tasty! Incredible boom boom sauce for dipping! Other sandwiches my family tried were grilled chicken, the brunch burger, a bacon burger and the hot chick sandwich. Everything was awesome! Wish I had room to try some of the baked goods in the display cases as you walk in...my mouth was watering as soon as you walk in the door. I didn't find anything special about The Butcher Shop but I probably made a mistake by trying to order something that was relatively healthy. I ordered the deli turkey sandwich, which has a fairly small amount of turkey on a fairly large bun. The turkey tasted pretty good but was overwhelmed by the bun. I also got a salad. The salad bar had a decent selection and the ingredients were fine but the dressings were nondescript. Everyone else in our party, as well as most of the other patrons in the restaurant, ordered the fried chicken sandwich with fries. They all seemed to think it was really good. I just didn't want something that heavy for lunch. Nor did I partake of what looked to be quite delicious desserts. I don't live in Longview so probably will never have the opportunity to eat at the Butcher Shop again. If I do, it's fried chicken sandwich and dessert for me! read more

Having never been here, our group of 15 came for dinner after getting into Longview for the night. Our order was taken quickly and efficiently. There were plenty of clean seating areas for our group and I noticed a baseball team and another large group as well. Food came out by name and of course hungry kids were standing and waiting for theirs causing a little congestion, but not horrible. The sides bar had many choices, although it would've been helpful if they had been labeled. Luckily someone in our group was familiar, as was the staff. The burgers here are huge! I stopped about 2/3 of the way through. Burgers were fresh and the fixings bar had a lot of fresh ingredients. I love the fries here, just the right level of crispness and had the skin still on them. The dessert counter has so many choices for very reasonable prices. Cream puff: the pastry/bread part was too tough and bread like, puffs should be more flaky and light Pecan diamond: so good but sooooo sweet. Let me preface this review by stating that I am not much of a beef eater so I did not sample the thick, juicy hamburgers that The Butcher Shop is known for ( they did look really good though). I had a turkey burger which was EXCELLENT! Not dry and lacking in taste ( as a lot of restaurant turkey burgers are), these turkey patties were fresh and perfectly cooked. I almost forgot that I was eating poultry! Oh, and the fries are fresh as well, but not droopy and soggy like my fries turn out when I try to make them from scratch. These were nice with just the right amount of " bite". The place is set up kind of like Fuddruckers so after you pick up your naked burger, you head to the " fixins bar" to dress your burger up. They also have beans on the bar? I didn't really understand why they were there but ...whatever. The reason that I'm giving them 3 stars is for the chaotic bakery counter. There's no line, just an amorphous grouping of people near the counter. And there were only like 3 girls working at the front during peak lunch hours. When I was finally forced to ask "how do i get service here" , I was met with a blank stare from the staff. And the cookies were not even that good. Way to sweet for me. I used to consider this one of the premier bakeries in Longview. Wanted a simple 1/2 sheet cake for a special occasion, but I wanted 1/2 (1/4 sheet) chocolate and 1/2 (1/4 sheet) white frosted as one cake and decorated with small colored roses. Can't do it! Went twice to get this done. Finally, a cake decorator came out and told me they wouldn't do it because too many complaints about uneven sides. Now, I'm no baker but even I know that the solution to that is to slice the high side even with the low side before icing. Want small roses in various colors? Can't (won't) do that either. This is NOT the way the original owner took care of his business. Shame on you. read more

Lots of good reviews on here, a good number of iffy reviews. This one is iffy, and the third star is added only because of the bakery. My wife had bought a red velvet cake a few months ago for my birthday, and it was one of the best cakes I've ever had. Light and fluffy in texture, and full of that delightful red velvet flavor. Not just a chocolate cake with red food coloring, but a proper red velvet cake. And with my lunchtime visit, I bought a red velvet "bar" for dessert - not as light as my cake was, but still very good and full of the aforementioned flavor. But the actual lunch, not so much. Maybe we caught them on the day the regular cook is off, but my hamburger patty had no flavor at all. Rule #1 - SEASON THE FOOD WHILE YOU'RE COOKING IT!!! So you're trying to save us from high blood pressure and it's effects while serving us a greasy hamburger? I really don't think a 1/4 teaspoon of salt on the patty is going to make any difference, but it will make a world of difference in taste. Also, the fixin's bar did not impress me one bit. It was a very small bar, certainly not a Fuddruckers on steroids, with shredded iceberg lettuce (there was leafy romaine but nothing to assure us it was not from California). And the tomatoes looked like they were picked green yesterday. And the fries? I appreciate the effort to serve fresh hand cut potatoes, but LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY COOK THEM!!!! For those of you that don't know, it's a two step method that cooks the potato light and fluffy on the inside but crispy on the outside with minimal grease. My fries were the exact opposite - limp, soggy, greasy. I ate less than half of them, the rest went in the trash. So, in ending, I might give them a second try if I'm in the area at lunchtime, but would make a special trip only for the bakery. read more

Great option for dessert cravings -- especially their red velvet. We got a birthday cake from here as well which was a hit! They don't use royal icing for their cakes and commit to their cream cheese frosting so that's much appreciated. Other good desserts we tried - Kalhua cake, German chocolate, Lemon Dream Cake, Chocolate Fudge, Coconut cake, Chocolate cupcake, Reese's peanut butter cake, and the Black Forest! I had a dark cherry bar that was delicious and we also had the reases bar. That was very rich and amazing. I was pretty excited to take a break from eating healthy and get a nice juicy bacon cheese burger with sautéed mushrooms. As I waited for my food, I walked to the condiment bar and got some beans. They were cooler than room temperature. I then tried the chili. It was full of fat. The chunks of fat were larger than the chunks of meat. They called our number and I brought our burgers to the table. The mushrooms were cold enough to have the oil they were sautéed in congealed on their surface. I then walked back to the counter and had to wait a few minutes for warm mushrooms. The problem was that the mushrooms were now warm but the burger no longer was. The burger had two pieces of bacon put on top of the patty in the shape of a cross. The bacon was underdone while the burger was overdone. It was very dry. The fries were very overdone. They had the consistency of potato chips but thicker. Although the meal was not good at all, the guy announcing the numbers was very entertaining. We won't eat here again. Overall every aspect of this place was a disappointment. read more

We have been eating at the Butcher Shop since the early 1980's. We no longer live in East Texas and stopped by, with my family, this week for the first time in a couple of years. The restaurant was dirty, condiment bar was unkept, staff was rude and our order was completely incorrect. While picking up our order, I politely informed the an employee that our order was incorrect and that we had ordered a chicken sandwich and not a grilled cheese. Immediately, the fry cook lady came over and just ripped into me, she stated that the order was correct according to the order ticket. I asked them to correct the order, once again, fry cook lay took command and proceeded to tell me that I'd paid grill cheese NOT A CHICKEN SANDWICH. I pulled out my credit card and told her to charge me for a chicken sandwich, she then started grumbling about the time it would take to prepare the corrected order. At that point I was done. My family took the incorrect order to the table and tried to eat it, but the quality was poor. I tossed my tray without even touching it. One of Longview's top eateries. Great beef burgers and buffalo burgers. Fixins bar is excellent and don't forget the free chili (with and without beans) which is pretty good in its own right. The bakery is awesome as well. Don't leave without something to take home with you for later after your burger and fresh cut fries. I have eaten here many times since this place opened and it has consistently been one of Longview's favorite and fun restaurants. Great for large parties and families. A new note and an extra star. Ordered a cake for a very special birthday but only called in the order about three hours before pickup. Luckily they had a quarter sheet cake I could buy. I just told them to write a short happy Birthday phrase on the cake. But the girl in the bakery made my day by putting together a much nicer and fancier cake than I could have expected. I have orderd 2 cakes from them The first time was for my daughters 1st birthday and as the decorations was great and everything they baked the wrong flavor of cake! I had asked for chocolate and they gave me white ! Second time was for my sons baby shower.... nothing about this cake was right!!! I had a winnie the pooh themed and they was supposed to put each character around the bottom tier but instead they put a photo of all the characters in the front instead of separate! Second they had the wrong color of yellow and blue that I had picked out ... and I made sure to call them frequently to make sure they had it right third i told the guy to put it in my trunk bc its flat back there Insteas he put it in the back seat causing it to fall over.
