This is my favorite bar in Austin, and I frequently use it to give people a sense of what Austin is all about. It's like the hippest backyard you've ever been to. It's very laid back, and a little bit out of the way. They have an Italian food truck in the back called Patrizi's that is developing a really good, and really well-deserved reputation. Immediately upon entering Butterfly Bar, the theme song to Portlandia (Washed Out's "Feel it all Around") may begin playing in your mind. If you've been to Portland, you may feel a strange tingle, but brush it off son, because this is Austin. A bit hidden (and take care when turning into the parking lot from Manor Rd - the bump up into the driveway is brutal on your car). Several signs of various businesses may have you confused. Worry not, cheap drink-seeker, walk through the only opening you'll see. Pretty fun outdoor space with seating that encourages relaxed and natural discourse. You can sit and stay for hours and hours. Plenty of space for the kids, too (If you are, in fact, the type that takes your kid to a bar). I haven't been in the colder months. I wonder - do they keep it open and bring out those cool heater things? Inside is where you'll order your drinks and small bites. Inside is also where there are a few tables and often live musical performances happening. There was one happening on the night of my last visit. Let's just say that I have an appreciation for the "unique" arts - but this was just weird. The drinks menu is great. Plenty of beer in bottles, much of it local. A Real Ale will run you $3.50 ($2.50 at happy hour). Several signature cocktails. a few small bites-type things on the menu, too (perfect for sharing and light snacking). Great, friendly bartenders. Is this a test? I hate quiz nights. There, i said it. I find them boring and pretentious and i couldn't possibly care less who the director of, Bad Girls From Valley High, is. The late realization that it was quiz night put my gag reflex on call and to be honest the only reason i walked into this joint is the proximity to my home, which happens to be next door. I used to go to the Butterfly Bar more often. I went back last night for a meetup, and remembered how much I love this place! Excellent patio, great bathrooms, cheap beers, nice bartenders. I really can't ask for more than that from a bar...but let's go back to the bathrooms. They have curtains instead of doors and it makes me feel like I'm peeing in a swanky lounge. Seriously. I love their bathrooms. And let's also go back to the patio. It's one of the best patios in Austin. The bar itself is tucked back away from the street, so the patio is like being in a friend's backyard...except the friend would have to own an enormous patio and decorate it with lights. If I lived in the area, I'd be here often. read more

While I probably will not have time in my last 3 weeks in Austin to return to this bar, I did want to mention that I was contacted by the bar - they let me know that they indeed do have food! I like the Butterfly Bar. It's barren, it's simple and it's right across the street from my favorite haunt the Haymaker. They have various beers and some great unique drinks. Their patio is a nice place to relax while enjoying your drink. In a town full of well coordinated fancy smacy bars, this is a nice alternative. Their food truck outside apparently is some of the best Italian in town. As of late, they have a outdoor market on the weekends in the parking lot. We have picked up some great farm to market meats and even picked up a shirt or two from the Flameless Shirt guy. read more

I love this place! I have only passed by this when driving on Manor like 1,000,000 times! It is truly a hidden gem and super divey! Getting into the parking lot kind of sucks if you are coming from Manor because it is such a small little entrance, if you have a bigger SUV, it might be tight for you. Otherwise, this place is amazing! There are a lot of different picnic tables outside and some w/umbrellas and some without. Also, some of them have heating lamps for when it is cold. They have a food truck here apparently that is supposed to be amazing, we didn't try it because we had already had dinner but the line to the food truck was literally out the fence. The butterfly bar also has indoor seating but the outside seating is more lively and fun! I had a sangria and it was super tasty! It had OJ and brown sugar in it made w/red wine! I love this place. Oh how I wish this place was closer to me! It is a hidden gem with actual "Keep Austin Weird" kind of people. I think I only saw 1-2 douchey hipsters! I didn't think that was possible in Austin.Butterfly Bar captured my heart with things reminiscent of the way Austin used to be. I hope being part of the Vortex is what will keep the hipster douche and douchettes away from this bar. There are plenty of places nearby that I am sure is full of them. This place has great outdoor seating, a lovely fresco dining area for the Italian food trailer, and all the imaginative cocktails you could think of. The night we visited was Forbidden Fruit movie night complete with Eating Raoul and free lube, as well as a singing duo that may have been called "Oralicious." Great atmosphere with an indoor bar and outdoor seating! Asked for a sweet mocktail, and they did not disappoint. Ran into a group of grad students practicing Italian in the outdoor area, apparently they meet up frequently as well. They also have a couple of cats roaming around. Decorations are simple with string lights and everything. Heard their food truck is also a great Italian spot, will come back at a later time to try it out! read more

Great bar - not that I hang out in bars that much - but this a great place to unwind after a trying day at the office (which are becoming all too frequent). Staff are super friendly and come around to make sure you're alright!! Quaint interior, but the deck outside has me sold on this place. Beer and wine only - for now. This is a cool bar and we liked the cocktails that we ordered here last Saturday night, but the bartender who helped us (a guy who liked like an extra from The Royal Tenenbaums) was super grumpy and curt. Loved this place. Can't say enough good things. Especially like that they cater to kids and families, as we stopped by with the grand kids. Next to an amazing Italian food truck, this backyard sanctuary is nestled in the heart of East Austin's Manor block. The friendly neighborhood vibes stem from this friendly neighborhood bar. The atmosphere is hard to top. Grab some food, enjoy the bar during intermission at the Vortex theatre or people watch by yourself -- all work beautifully at The Butterfly Bar. The one star knock? I haven't ever found a drink I love here, and while the beer selection is always solid, it always keeps me wanting more. I always default to a Pearl Snap or even the Omission when I'm feeling particularly gluten-free. The bartenders are incredibly cool and the drinks are always well made, but I would stick with a drink you know-and-love or grab wine/beer. Many of their specialty drinks have blown my taste buds back with sweetness, but that's highly subjective -- just take note and adjust to your personal preferences. The Butterfly Bar is tucked back within the Vortex theater off Manor Rd (between El Chilito and something else haha). I found this bar trying to find a new place to go on Yelp. I noticed it had four stars and was down the street from my house. The first time I went, we drank several bottles of wine (very affordable) and called it a night. The atmosphere is amazing, it's not overly crowded, and we truly enjoyed the experience. The second time we went because I heard from a friend that Patrizi's the Italian restaurant food truck also within the Vortex has the best Italian in Austin. First of all, Patrizi's does have the best Italian in Austin; secondly, we enjoyed drinks once more from the Butterfly Bar and again had a fantastic experience. The bartenders remember your name for your tab and the quality of cocktails is above average. We will be back over and over until it gets hot again. Love this place. read more

The Butterfly Bar fits in the grungy category, with its beaten down tables, sticky interior, and dark ambiance, but for some reason, I like it. Though my normal jam is maybe a wine bar not tucked away or a brewery with some funky vibe. Well, BB is neither. It is a no-frills bar with a pretty stripped down decor. But, the alcohol pricing goes along with what you are getting: affordability. Also, the food truck right outside (look it up yourself) is pretty killer. Getting your $12 bottle of wine from here will keep your dinner at the cost of a pasta dish elsewhere. Cleanliness could be addressed, however. It doesn't quite feel entirely sanitary, which is why I stuck to their wooden benches closer to the food truck... read more

This was a really nice place to hang out! I loved the old movie playing on the wall, and the cozy atmosphere inside. When I showed up, the very nice bartender went over the things she had that weren't on the menu (warm drinks!!!) and I was thrilled to get a yummy hot toddy. I also enjoyed a whiskey and Maine Root ginger beer. I could actually see myself hanging out there alone and reading or working on a writing project without a computer. Super cozy, relaxed atmosphere, and good drinks. Also there is a bar cat who could not care less. What more can you ask for? Only one thing threw me off. It wasn't a huge bother, but there was a show happening last night, and they were corralling the audience into the Vortex theater by jangling a bell a bunch of times. Lovely hidden Austin gem. Came to the Butterfly Bar for the first time for a trivia night and it definitely fills up quickly--even on a weeknight. It was a bit disappointing that they didn't have any beers on tap, but as other reviewers have mentioned, they're touted more as a cocktail bar. I ended up grabbing a local can of Saison and took a seat outside in their back patio. Even on a hot summer day, the patio was pleasant and had a very relaxed sensibility. The bartenders are friendly and their drink prices are reasonable for a downtown Austin bar. Plus--they have a pretty ample parking lot, which is always something I appreciate. read more

Meh... I live within walking distance of this place, and it looks fun, so I've gone in there a handful of times, but each time has been a tad disappointing. They have a restaurant/food truck inside, which is rad, but they only serve basic Italian food, which is kind of boring, but nbd. But the main thing I don't like about this place is that the drinks are kind of pricy, and so far they've been really bad. First, I ordered a few cocktails, but they were just terrible, so I figured, "OK, this must be a 2-part drink kind of place." Then I switched to basics, like whisky and coke, and they were still bad. The last drink I had there was a whisky on ice that cost $6 -- seemed a bit steep, especially for a well drink. Other than that, the ambiance is great, and they have a huge courtyard with a neat patio, tables, etc... It's a great place to hangout, it's just a shame the drinks are expensive but not very good. read more

I was met here by a bartender dressed as Charlie Chaplin who immediately asked, 'are you sure you're 21?' And then scoffed at my response and walked away. Honestly, if you don't believe someone's age and there is no person checking ID's at the door, then check their ID if you doubt them! Former military member here. There's a screen inside showing old movies, but the giant patio is where it's at. Light snacks available. I know they're applying for a liquor license and are considering adding some live music.
