We've been coming here for years. We've brought friends and family. We've introduced lots of folks to this space and hyped up how amazing, cozy, and safe it feels to hang here. The last 3 times I've come have just progressively been worse and worse. The bartenders have been rude, dismissive, and now they straight up just ignore guests. Last night I watched so many folks dealing with the distracted bartenders and trying to figure out how to order while actively being ignored by someone 4 ft away behind the bar. Is this just how it is going to be now? Your drinks are expensive and they weren't even poured evenly in the two drinks I ordered. I've seen the staff yell at the crowd not to form lines and I've had other bartenders yelling to form lines. I have no idea what is going on with the staff but I hope everyone gets on the same page and learns how to treat the customers. Patrizi's staff is next level with their service and ordering a drink totally kills the vibe. This space used to be so chill and welcoming and now everyone behind the bar is totally checked out. I love hidden gems! This place is definitely ticket away. Tonight (Monday) we were in the back bar area where a live jazz band played. I love the atmosphere and the love music gave it a speakeasy feel. There's nothing like a grand piano. I ordered a glass of whiskey neat. Service from the bar staff was great. Although we didn't sit outside, I like that there is an outdoor fire pit. There is an amazing Italian food truck out back called Patrizis. Get the Carbonara Alexandra. My friend and I came here on a blind double date for the first time on 9/17 at around 7:30 p.m. and thought the vibe was great until our waitress came up and introduced herself, but unfortunately I have forgotten her name( server: inside B) . She asked for a card for the tab and we asked if we could do two separate tabs to which she basically told us that we could be on one tab and figure out the rest on our own. Then as I offered up my card with a bit of hesitation she made a comment about how some of us in the group didn't know what it was like to go out prior to Covid and open a tab. Her facetious comment was directed at me being that I recently turned 21 and was the youngest. Next we received our drinks, I understand that some drinks are made bigger than others, but when my friends were brought their drinks they were all filled to the top, weheres mine was filled 3/4. I let it go and asked if we could get some more water and our waitress said ok and never came back until it was last call and my friend asked again, then she brought the water. Let me mention that we were not belligerent, we were in a space by ourselves and we had each ordered a single drink and had food. When we asked for our check, my friend asked our waitress how her night had been, thinking that if it had been busy then maybe she was just a bit frustrated and we should be understanding of that, instead she said it had been an easy night, then why rudeness directed at me? All people in my party (with 2 being practically strangers) noticed the difference in attitude towards me compared to them. Overall it was very upsetting as a POC to get this clear difference in treatment from another POC at an establishment that loudly advocates for POC. I still tipped her, because we are in a pandemic it's the right thing to do, but I felt so strongly about this that it made me write my first yelp review. read more

Really cool atmosphere with lots of outdoor seating and entertainment. They were doing trivia last night. The drinks are also really good and they do happy hour 5-7. One of the bartenders was a little snappy but not too notable to ruin the time there. Patrizis food truck is there with really good looking pasta. I arrived there the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Before riding there on my bike from 4 miles away, i mapped out the route on Google Maps beforehand & Google said it was closed. the phone recording on the bar's answering machine said they were open for business. Still wanting to confirm, i tried ordering some food/drink over the website and again it let me order food/drink. So i arrive to the bar and there is a piece of paper stuck on door that said "closed." About 4-5 others were standing around also surprised that it was closed. Butterfly Bar management lacked a modicum of courtesy to its potential customers by omitting to mention on its website/ answering machine/ FB that it was indeed closed on a non-holiday. Surprise!Customers are going to rely on that answering machine msg and actually take an Uber or ride their bikes several miles to get there. It would make sense to at least turn off the answering machine completely if you are not going to bother to change the outgoing message. I doubt i will venture out to Butterfly Bar again. Luckily, the very professionally-run Salty Sow nearby gave us excellent refreshments and earned the $100+ we spent that night. read more

I freaking love the Butterfly Bar. The atmosphere is absolutely the selling point... the inside is colorful and the bar itself is old-school and feels theatrical, fitting with the Vortex next door. It's the kind of place where I would go with red lipstick and a vintage dress to make eyes at an older man. There's usually a movie being projected onto one of the walls. The bathroom situation, a little strange; instead of doors, there are curtains. Be aware that there may be gaps. Outside, there's a patio with picnic tables with umbrellas, and down the steps there's an open area with rickety iron tables and chairs (and more picnic tables). On a great night, there are fires going and you will have more than ample opportunity to sit around and get chatty with strangers. There's also a lot of overgrown vines and greenery about... super charming. They sell decent non-alcoholic beer. I used to drink here OFTEN and the alcoholic beverages are fine and dandy. Worth getting some popcorn or Patrizi's as a complement. I've only ever happened upon one outdoor show here - it was an hour of complete silence and naked dudes dancing around. Pleasant laid back decor and the food truck, Patrizi's is exceptional! Come early because parking fills up quickly. There are also side streets to park on but you will likely have to search for parking. The lines can get long for the food truck and bar so if you go with a friend, one person stand in the food truck line and the other at the bar and bring your friend a drink while you wait. It was a little confusing to figure out what was going on as this location has a few different places that come together to form a very hipster and unique ambience. The drinks were good and they have nice happy hour specials. I also really enjoyed the trivia and had a good time. Taking one star off because it is kinda hard to do trivia outside on wobbly uneven table and also I'm not really a fan of breathing cigarette smoke for hours on end but that's just personal preference. There's something about it that drags me back and makes me wish I wasn't born in the 80s. Butterfly Bar is an exceptionally decorated space, with an antique 100 year-old bar as the main attraction. This is the vintage glamor house of my dreams. The classic ambiance of a 1920s bar scene is well put together and visually stimulating. The outdoor courtyard is my typical favorite spot when the weather is being predictable. With all the space and tables outside, including a stage, you may wonder at first what on Earth goes on here. Well, I'll tell you a secret that I have come to find out over time: You never know what is going to happen here. One night there may be a swing band performing with enthusiastic patrons of all ages dancing the night away. You may encounter a local musician strumming away on his guitar inside without a mic to a small group of listeners. Another night they might be playing a movie you wouldn't have ever thought to rent. Yes friends, there really is something for everyone at this place. It has become my favorite hang out spot. Attached next door is The Vortex which holds all different types of performances and with the end of a show there tends to be a welcoming mix of people added to the bar. With its friendly bartenders, a restroom plastered with vintage Playboy pictures, seating that resembles church pews, your eyes may never cease to wander. I keep giving this bar chances and it disappoints me every single time. Don't get me wrong - killer atmosphere, great location, decor, etc. Could be the perfect bar -- but an integral part of a great bar is great service. Unfortunately, this establishment is sadly lacking. There are more than enough bartenders staffed to kill a line, but they're incredibly lackadaisical which in turn adds up to ridiculous wait times. This in itself isn't the problem - it's the attitude of the bar staff. A simple, hey, I see you, I acknowledge that you've been standing there for a while and I'll be right with you! -- should be standard practice? Instead, the bar staff is rude, and ignores you until they have literally nothing else to do but serve you, and at that point, acts like it's a chore. I'm looking at you, chimney sweep hat guy. Also, girl with braids? Throwing IDs back at customers is kind of rude. I have hands for a reason. Anyways ... could be great but I have had less than welcoming experience with the bar staff so many times that I do not think I will be back. A very neat inside bar but even more impressive is the patio and adult play land outdoors. They seriously have a little house to sit in and old school desk chairs! And boys, check out the back of the bathroom door, no seriously. The wine and beer selection is tops! AND the prices? Even better! I had a really good malbec for $6 and it was a generous pour. My one star is for the bartender dude in the fedora or whatever that pretentious hat was. I was repeatedly blown away by how rude he was each time I visited the bar and each of my friends had the same experience. I'm from out of town visiting but they said he's always like that. My friends and I (seven of us) each racked up 60-100 tabs in the time we were at the bar and even though I loved the outdoor seating and environment, not to mention the amazing Italian food truck, I'll never go back. My final interaction with the bartender I ordered three old fashions and he not only rolled his eyes but made me feel bad for asking him to do his fucking job. I had to literally say "is that okay" because he just stood there for a whole minute without doing anything. He sucks ass. And the bar sucks for having a guy like that around. I love this bar. It is attached to the Vortex Theatre which along with Salvage Vangaurd and Coldstone Theatre form Austin's SoBro district. It is conveniently just the third stop on the D-line (the Barnabe Plaza stop), Enjoy the patio. Get tiny bottle of champagne and some somemores. The Butterfly Bar is truly an Austin original. When people think of Austin, TX this is the kind of hang-out you will find. It is not easy to find. You definitely have to know where this place is or you will be driving around going crazy. It is next to the Vortex performance house so find that and you are right next to the Butterfly. One you stumble across this place you will be amazed at the size. The inside of the bar is tiny but really beautiful, very 1920's with gold mirrors, wall paint and wood detail. As of right now they only serve beer and wine but their wine selection is great and the night I came they had $5 wine by the glass. Though there is room to sit at the bar the real selling point is the massive outdoor space. They have a couple of huge decks, lights strung up and even a small house with retro wooden school desks to sit at. The ample space is great for groups (we had about 10 of us on a picnic bench) and great for Austin's famous live music. The bartenders are really cool and really nice. I cannot wait to go back. This may be a new favorite hang-out spot as I am really looking forward to checking out some performances at the Vortex. read more

Very pleasantly surprised...the Vortex is an interesting venue - the outside looks a bit like a hippie playground (hula hoops and all) with a big wooden stage, a large "yard" with seating, and a cool gazebo/greenhouse area for covered seating. There is also a raised patio that leads you inside. Would have loved to sit outside but it was too windy. this would make a great venue for a Austin-y special event. (Would also be fun to grab a couple of girlfriends to drink sangria and gab in the greenhouse. The inside reminded me a bit of East Side Showroom - if you tried to recreate it at home. This is a compliment. It was calm and was intimate and there was a black and white movie on the wall, etc. But instead of a $25 cheese plate with two slices of cheese from local farmers, I scored a $12 (might have been less) plate with what had to be a pound of cheese. Ok, so it was selections from HEB, but it was good! Smoked Gouda, Blue cheese, a sharp cheddar - big ole hunks of each. I mean the two of us could not even finish it. It also came with figs (ya either love em or hate em) and little baby dill pickles. I enjoyed two glasses of sangria, one red, one white. It was not the best I've ever had, but I cannot complain about the price point. My boyfriend had a specialty bottled beer and it was like $3. Had I not had to be up early I would have liked to stay for the Hip Hop show - there were all sorts of interesting character milling around. This review was written by someone who does NOT frequent bars all that often, so take it with a big pinch of salt. I come for the food truck that is conveniently located right outside. The Butterfly Bar is just one part of a compound that includes the Vortex Theatre and Patrizi's. You are beginning to see these symbiotic relationships more and more, with food trucks hooking up to bars. One supplies the drinks, and one supplies the food. It works out perfectly. I have heard a lot of people say that the food is expensive - and it is, yeah, a little. But that's because of the quality. If you want cheap food then go to McDonald's. People also say to bring bug spray - yeah, that's because it is OUTSIDE. That's like writing a terrible review of 35 because there's TRAFFIC. The outdoor (see, outdoor) seating is eclectic, much like Spiderhouse. And sprawling too. What I truly like about it though is that there are enough nooks and crannies to accommodate your loud drunken group or smaller areas for more intimate dates. The bar itself is wooden and impressive. The selections can be a little intimidating, but once you know what you are looking for, you're fine. I love the old films that play against the wall. The bar (and the entire compound) have a certain charm, though it is difficult to put your finger on what exactly it is. Maybe it is just an embodiment (much like Spiderhouse) of Austin, a mismatch of different lights, shapes, and sounds that make up one truly unique experience. But Butterfly Bar, or whomever owns the complex, please listen to me: Please fix that pothole of doom right as you drive in. That thing is like a small swimming pool. In our search for a bar for our group to be called "regulars", we stumbled across The Butterfly Bar. One of my friends found it after it had been open only for a short while. She claimed it was "so now" and thinking she had more money than me, I was skeptical. However, there I found delicious sangria and a friendly bar staff (both helpful and humorous - plus, when an amiga concerned about her vitamin C intake asked for extra orange slices on her sangria, they gave her 4 extra). They recognized us the second time they came in and made us feel very comfortable and welcome. Thus, we secured our "regulars" spots. During happy hour (5-7) you can find $3.00 sangria and cheap (under $2.00) tall boys of Lone Star. Win win. Plus, they have hula hoops if you're ever craving an activity. Or, if you're outside at one of the many tables and the weather should become grueling, you can squeeze into the charming inside to watch an old movie (like 'Ben-Hur') or head to the gazebo. There, you'll find a radio that can find the hottest Kelly Clarkson hits where you and your friends can sing along to "Since U Been Gone"...or whatever works for you. P.S. I've only been in the lady's room (so far...) but if you go in, don't expect a generic stall set-up. There are curtains instead of doors and lots of mirrors. This has never been a problem. Plus, it's nicer than gross generic stalls. Well, in my opinion. This place reminds be of what Spider House used to be like. Except that Spider House didn't really serve any booze (to speak of?) at the time, and that seems to be all Butterfly Bar does. So not really like old school Spider House, I guess. But with similar grounds: A smallish inside gives way to a sprawling, promising outside. With decks and chairs and grassy bits. It's perhaps not the most well-planned space, but it's charming just for that reason. We went for a friend's book release party, and pretty much everyone there was with the event. There was a small tent set up outside where some folks seemed to be rehearsing some performance or spoken word event, disgruntled at our presence. Everything else was lovely, quirky, Austiny even. It may have just be the crowd present for the book party, but the place seemed to lack a certain douchey, hipster vibe that so many places on the East Side have. Of course, Manor has always been much more bearable in that sense. So go. Have a drink. Enjoy the deck. Remember old school Spider House. read more

We have had an on-going tour of the east side going for the last several weeks. One of our recent stops was the Butterfly Bar. As Walker F pointed out, there is a private parking lot, but it is unpaved. I was not a happy camper driving my little roadster in there, but we made it out alive. The porch area is cute, but it was a bit too cold that night for us to enjoy it. I thought it was very interesting that they have a little outdoor hut area to hang out in. The inside bar area was cute. Small tables to sit at. There was a projector with old movies projected on the wall. The bar itself was nice as well. Booze was pretty inexpensive overall. I did have a glass of the wine for happy hour - it was not very good. However, the beer selection was solid and inexpensive. We ordered up the cheese plate, which proved to be enormous. I'm not sure how they are going to stay open because there was at least $10 worth of cheese on our plate. They went with quantity over quality unfortunately. This isn't a bar. It's the cool house that you go to hang out with friends and meet new friends. The bar itself is like a comfortable family room with a baby grand and ethereal movies playing on a far wall. Outside is a big deck with umbrella covered picnic tables and below that is an awesome backyard with hula hoops, fire pits, activities and greenery. I call it The Secret Beer Garden. The owner, Emily, is a great host who greets you, checks in on you and makes sure there's always enough beer and wine flowing. For all of Austin's weirdness there aren't many truly unique bars that don't have a corporate feel. This is the only one I've found that gets it spot on. read more

They are also pet friendly if you want to bring your pup out with you, which is a plus for me! The service is always excellent and the drink prices are super reasonable (~$4 for sangria, beer and great wine bottle prices). The bartenders are super sweet and friendly. The beer prices are good, other members of our party complimented the wine as well. I love the patio and I will need to revisit it once the weather warms up. The worst thing about this place is getting in and out of the parking lot, as well as finding it. I heard so much about this place, as it's right by my house, and gets great reviews. The photos here on Yelp made me avoid it for almost a year now. I don't know why, but they definitely didn't do it justice. We came on a Friday evening around 8 or 9 after hitting up some other Manor spots for drinks. The patio was crowded and had a great vibe. We waiting for only a minute to order our drinks and the bartender (glasses, long blonde hair) was so sweet and friendly. Very helpful in helping us select our drinks too. I foresee this becoming my new "go-to" around Manor, especially after I try Patrizis. read more
