Well, I will start by saying the cupcakes and cake I ordered were tasty. The much disappointment & the reason for the 3 stars is the lack of following directions to my order. We had family over for the sex revealing of our baby. I gave them the envelope with the ultrasound. We didn't find out what it was either. We were finding out with everyone. The lady who took my order was very nice. She seemed to understand what I wanted. If it was a boy it would have blue filling and if it were a girl they would do chocolate chip with strawberry. When we cut the cake all it had was chocolate chip. Really? Funny now, but really confusing when there is no strawberries or blue with it. Luckily we had the cupcakes that had the lightest hint of pink inside of them. Actually, they looked more like beige. Not worth my $70. They looked pretty, but not being able to follow direction is a pretty big deal. read more

I have yet to make a formal visit to The Cakery, however I did pick up a beautiful green cupcake from their stand during the St. Pat's parade. It may have just been that I was drunk, but that little green cupcake hit the spot! I will be going back to check out what else they offer. After having The Cup weekly in college, my now wife and I knew we had to have The Cakery do our wedding cake. There was no doubt in our minds our wedding cake was going to be delicious and we and our guests were not disappointed! Our cake was delicious and the guest enjoyed all of our flavors immensely! We had one kitchen cake left over and took it to our farewell picnic and it was gone in an hour! Not only was it delicious but the design was gorgeous. I highly recommend that you order cakes for special occasions from The Cakery! I have ordered three cakes from The Cakery, and have received beautiful & fun creations each time. You should order a few weeks in advance. They were very helpful via phone and email to ensure that the design was exactly what I wanted, and broke down the pricing so that it was very clear. The cakes are delicious - my favorite is the strawberry cake with vanilla buttercream! I order it every year for my birthday. The fondant bows are great too! I have ordered both round and square cakes with the bows, and they look very elegant, and do not necessarily have to look like presents. I didn't want boring wedding or birthday cake styles for my birthday cakes, and the cakes they made were definitely more modern and fun. The cake is moist and flavorful, but not overwhelming or artificial. If you like The Cupcakery, you will probably love The Cakery even more because, in my opinion, the cake is better. We used The Cakery for our wedding cake. I don't have a single negative thing to say about it. The ladies working there were all friendly, personable, and helpful. They took the time to find out exactly what we wanted and gave us lots of ideas and options. I never felt like I was inconveniencing them. The finished product tasted exactly like the samples we had received (freakin amazing), and the cake was gorgeous. These ladies are fantastic! While looking for someone to make our wedding cake we encountered a lot of groans and a lack of willingness to take on the job. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked into The Cakery and they checked their schedule, said they were free that day. They set us up with some cake and icing samples looked at the picture of our design and said sure just let us know which flavors you like etc. I liked all the flavors of course. On our wedding day the cake was delivered and set up and looked EXACTLY like our picture. They were so pleasant every time I spoke with them too; very friendly. Awful experience. We had ordered a 2 tier cake for a wedding reception and when we arrived to pick the cake up they told us "oh, just a minute we need to arrange it." I thought they meant the box. They meant they needed to put the tiers together, put icing on the cake to cover up the hole between the tiers and put it on the stand. Once they had finished that, they started to put it in the box. I had to remind them that they also needed to put polka dots all over the cake, which had been on the order. After checking the order and realizing that that was true they responded with "oh, we'll do that real quick." They barely apologized, threw everything together quickly and messily, and then the cake didn't even taste that good. I would NOT recommend this place for any important event. They did not take our cake seriously at all. read more

The best iced sugar cookie and cupcake I've had. They use real buttercream icing and the cookie had the perfect balance of chewiness and crispness. Re: cupcake--Other places (I won't name) tend to go over the top with fancy flavored icings on fancy flavored oversized cupcakes which always seem to lack the quality that the Cakery has mastered. My husband and I recently ordered a cake for our wedding reception. We provided them, a week in advance, with the cake stand, cake topper and greenery that we wanted to be on the cake. We even sent them a picture with instructions on how we wanted the cake to be decorated. We arrived the day of the event to pick up the cake only to find that the cake had only been iced and not decorated. When they eventually found the decorations that we had given them we asked the girl if she could decorate it for us and she replied, "I can try". Once she started putting the greenery around the top layer she mentioned that she wouldn't be able to do it around the bottom layer because of the box it was in. My husband and I then left the bakery with a half decorated cake and had to finish putting the decorations on at the venue. To pay $125 for a cake and not have the job totally complete is kinda poor business. The only reason we didn't say anything while we were there is because we didn't want it to ruin our day. Yes, the cake did taste good...which is why I gave 3 stars. If they didn't want to decorate it for us then they should've told us that the week before when we brought all the stuff to them. Probably won't be ordering another cake from The Cakery!!! read more

I absolutely love The Cakery! I remember when it first opened in my neighborhood 12 years ago, we were so tickled to have a place close by to indulge our occasional cravings for something sweet, moist and buttery - their cakes! If I remember correctly, they used to sell some individual cupcakes, cookie/icing "sandwiches", cake/icing "sandwiches", and the amazing cake in a cup. (My guilty pleasure). Here recently, i only see the cake in a cup and the occasional cookie sandwich. Their cakes are always so moist and flavorful and the cake icing/frosting is one of the very best I have ever tasted. You can taste the real butter they use. (Not that awful shortening that other bakeries and grocery stores use, yuck) My niece used them for her wedding and loved them. Service is always with a smile. Everyone in the shop says hello and are so friendly. I only get in there about once a month for my cake in a cup, but I always leave feeling like I was welcomed and my patronage was appreciated. The only negative about The Cakery is the fact that they don't have a small area for customers to eat a treat and drink a coffee. They have or had "The Cup" in Central West End, but I love Dogtown. So, Cakery, please expand somehow and give us a tiny little coffee corner with more treats. Yum! Thanks. read more

I ordered a red velvet with buttercream frosting for my niece's birthday. The cake was nice and moist and the buttercream wasn't too sweet. It was a bit pricey but definitely worth it. The Cakery made our wedding cake, and I can't recommend this bakery enough! Everyone who works there is extremely friendly and accommodating. Their cake tasting was also a delight, because they didn't charge for the tasting like so many other bakeries do! The cake was delicious and our guests raved about it at the wedding (especially out of town guests who haven't tasted its goodies before). Although the cake is wonderful, I would not recommend The Cakery to anyone. They lost our payment which caused some unneeded stress before our wedding, but for the most part, they handled that pretty well. The owner was very friendly about the whole situation to where I probably would have given them another chance in the future. The icing on the cake (literally) was when we walked into our wedding reception to a completely undecorated cake. We met with The Cakery and showed them a picture of what we wanted. It was something very simple. A cake topper (that we ordered) and a few fresh flowers placed around it (also ordered by us). The day before the wedding, I called The Cakery and asked if I could text or email a picture of the cake I showed them previously just to be on the safe side. They asked me to email them a picture which I did. Later that day, I delivered my cake topper and flowers to our venue as planned so that everything would be ready to go for them to decorate when they delivered and decorated the cake the next day. Imagine our surprise when we got to our reception and saw the cake topper sitting on top of our cake and the flowers in the vase they were delivered in sitting next to it. Apparently, our meeting about the cake as well as the email I sent the day before were completely disregarded. It's baffling to me that they would leave a cake undecorated especially after confirming our design with them several times. It seems like placing the flowers ON the cake would be a no brainer. As I said, the cake tasted amazing, but the overall experience was extremely disappointing, to say the least. read more

Generally, I go to another well known St. Louis bakery for all of my cakes; however, The Cakery happened to be closer to my house and the location of the event so I decided that even though it was about $5-$10 more, I'd try it. That was the best decision I made! To start with, I needed a cake for a nautical themed baby shower and I had absolutely no idea what I wanted on the cake. Everyone at the bakery was very nice and sat down with me to discuss all of my options. They were incredibly patient with me and even drew diagrams so I would have a visual reference of what it would look like. When I picked it up it came out looking better than I had imagined. The cake itself was incredibly delicious! It was moist and the buttercream icing was just sweet enough without being overly sweet like some places have their icings. I received compliments on the cake from every guest at the shower and the mom-to-be loved it. I will never go to another bakery again. read more
