First impressions are everything. They need to remember that. Upon entering The Caroline last night, we were asked if we had reservations. It was Monday eve @ 5pm. We said no and immediately the man acted frazzled that we did not. He then asked how many? We said 5 ( 3 of us were there) - again acting put out he asked "HOW LONG WILL YOU BE HERE"? Seriously ... are you kidding me? I was shocked and said I didn't know and my 86 year old Mother on a walker replied" We just drove here from Dayton". Again, acting put out he keeps reviewing the seating- now mind you, there are empty tables everywhere. He then said, "well, we have parties coming in at 7". I said I imagined we could be done by then. I honestly just wanted to walk out- he was SO RUDE, but the other 2 girls were not there yet. And who wants to be on a "TIMER" when they come to have a nice dinner with friends? He then says "Well, I guess we can put you in the back room". The take us back to a room that has long,beautiful marble like tables. They seat us at a table with a black tablecloth on it. Seating my Mom, she hits her leg on something, so I look under the table to discover this is a fold up plastic-like craft table. Very cheap, very low class if you ask me. The table decorations throughout were glass cylinders with a candle in them that were filthy dirty. Our other 2 friends arrived and we did not see them come in as we were "in the back", nor did they see us. They were met with the same rudeness, but did get seated at a table "in the front", not big enough for 3..but they squished 5 seats in. We opted to sit "in the back" at our craft table than to be squished like sardines. This, of course, upset the apple cart again for them as they had to clean/reset their table. The waitress was "ok". Certainly not overly friendly or exuding the Christmas spirit as you would hope/expect from a waitress . We were up against front windows, from which a cold draft could be felt by the 2 women sitting closest to them. The food was good, but not any better than we could have gotten at any other restaurant where you are treated with respect, kindness and the people serving you are happy, in the Christmas spirit, and are glad to have your business. The way they treated us, you would have thought we were non celebrities coming to a celebrity laden, snubby , high class restaurant in New York City. People .....GET A GRIP! Especially the tall man with the bad attitude ... are you the owner? manager? greeter? Any of the above, you should be fired. You are in Troy, Ohio and honestly, nothing about you or the restaurant is high class. The first impression you left us with the minute we walked in the door did ruin our would be festive Christmas dinner with friends ... and would have ruined the dinner even IF it was the best we had ever had...which it wasn't. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find The Caroline in the square in Troy. The decor is traditional and subdued. A great place for a date. They have an excellent selection of specialty bottle beers. The menu is ambitious. My steak salad was delicious, as were the southwest enrolls. I plan to return when in the area again. read more

My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. We started off with the pretzels and beer cheese. The pretzels were delicious. The beer cheese was fake imitation processed cheese. This doesn't seem to go with the rest of the standard of the menu. I got to the special which sounded better than what it actually was. It was veal with a creamy citrus sauce and small shrimp on a bed of spinach. Side of green beans came with it, end up being the star of the plate. I personally would have preferred if the veal had a hunter sauce on it instead. My boyfriend got a steak, the Caroline he said. That was phenomenal! He got a baked potato as a side, he side it was good. We both got Cesar salads as a side, they were pretty good, not to heavy on the dressing. For desert we split the Dutch Apple Ice cream. We loved it! The waiting staff was a little slow, but not too bad considering they were busy. We would come back again sometime, but probably won't get the pretzels and beer cheese again. Terribly slow service. Two hours to get our food. Half an hour to get a bottle of wine. Unprofessional bartender. No bueno.

This is my favorite restaurant in Troy!!! They have excellent food and a great staff. We try to eat here a couple times a month. Never had a bad meal!!! read more

My wife and I eat at the Caroline every week. We have dinner in th bar and enjoy kidding with the bartender. We both love the Caroline salad with salmon. For a bonus, try the stewed tomatoes, simply excellent. This is our favorite restaurant. read more

I can't believe I just spent $95.00 on the worst steak dinner I've ever had! Do not get the crab cakes! They were $12 for 2 small imitation patties. I was surprised by all the positive reviews of this restaurant, because I was seriously disappointed by the bland and over cooked potatoes. My steak however was still mooing when I didn't order rare. They did have excellent dinner bread, although the little dab of butter was not even butter tasting ; It was maybe some cheap margarine? I'm not sure. The clientele all seems to be above the the age of 40 for the most part, that's the only reason I can explain the very bland food. I know that sounds awful, but it was so insanely BLAND. Found this gem via Yelp during 700 mile road trip home. Excellent food, service, quiet adult atmosphere. We had NewYork strip with stuffed potato skin, Grilled portobello on fresh spinach topped with crabmeat mix. Yummy salads. Historic downtown square. DEFINATELY returning in the future. read more

We went here after reviewing it and seeing all the praise, they get a two for the atmosphere. But service was very slow and our waitress was very nice but very forgetful. The Cajun chicken pasta just taste like taco seasoning, burger was good, but chips were over cooked. Overall for the price, I wouldn't go here again. read more

The atmosphere is nice, the wine selection is pretty good and the staff is usually friendly. The food is not remarkable. I have had several dishes and have yet to find something that I would go back 'especially' for. It's as fancy as you are going to get in Troy, and the food is good enough, so it's ok for a night out. read more
