I honestly really like this restaurant. The ambiance is lovely; the service is consistently excellent, which is impressive since many restaurants are struggling to find valuable help; dishes look beautiful, and the menu is diverse, interesting, and current. The wine list is perfectly balanced with many choices at reasonable prices. BALANCE was actually what the waiter shared when describing the specials as we chatted further about foods and wines and such. Unfortunately, while the primary tastes of all of our dishes were good, they were all a little too salty. I hate to say this but I'm sure the engaging and wonderful owners would want to know. The saltiness was a consistent table comment as we still enjoyed a lovely time. To note, we had mushroom toast, endive salad, whitefish, hamburger, swordfish, oysters, chicken liver pate' and fried olives. While a couple these dishes are inherently salty, like the olives and white fish, the others simple just had too much. We dine in Portsmouth frequently due to the proximity to our home. However we finally made it to the Carriage House and it blew us away. This is now our favorite restaurant in the area. I was a frequent visitor under the previous owner and am pleased to say I will also be a frequent visitor under the new owners. I purposely made our reservations for a Friday so I could have my all time favorite- the haddock piccata. They changed the recipe a bit but it is still delicious. The rolls are a bit sweet for me but still good. You can't beat the views and there service from every staff member is exceptional! We can't wait to go back on a Thursday for prime rib and the oysters Rockefeller. Hoping they will highlight one of my other old time favs, the steak au poivre sometime. We came here for Restaurant Week. We have been talking about checking it out for a while. We could not have been happier with our decision!! They had a Restaurant Week menu, but also offered their regular menu as well. We started with cocktails. I had the Rye Tai and the lady had a Hot n Dirty martini. Both drinks were excellent!! The apps that we had from the RW menu were both very good, lamb stuffed pasta and a salmon app. Sorry, I can't remember what the exact names were. For the mains we had a fish dish and the Beef Bolognese; I know, pasta at a seafood restaurant!!???? BUT YES!!! I would put their Beef Bolognese against any Italian restaurant in Portsmouth. And the fish was delish!! for dessert we had the Lemon Cake and Cereal Panna Cotta. Both were excellent!! Our server, Shirley I believe, was on point!! She made great suggestions and was perfect with her timing. We look forward to coming back to enjoy more from their regular menu and gets some of the oysters we saw at the other tables!! The service is great and the ambiance is pleasant and quaint! More importantly, the food is something to rave about. They've got a variety of pasta dishes, elegant salads, and classic steak/chicken options (think NY Sirloin and Chicken Piccata). The specialty around this area is seafood, and they surely highlight that here! Catch me dipping jumpo shrimpies into cocktail sauce and slurping oysters for the first course... and then it's on to lobster, more shrimp, scallops and haddock for the main course. Looking for real estate in Rye and I stumbled across this place purely by chance, I'm glad I did. The staff is welcoming right when you enter the door and it carries throughout the meal. Mostly locals dining here when I first visited was off season. The meal I had was simple but delicious. Of course I had to try the fish chowder, which was lovingly enrobed with melted leeks. Very nice chowder. My entree was pork schnitzel, which was equally delicious but unexpected. I thought it would have European favors but it was more of a Szechuan sauce. I liked it! I'll defiantly be back and I'm delighted to know they're located to my new home in Rye. read more

A friend told me this place just reopened next to the beach and when they went for dinner last week it was great. Accurate. Had a fabulous cocktail off the menu while we waited for our table. I was back to visit family and was thrilled to hear that such a mainstay of previous summer vacations was again up and running. I have been a regular since the new owners have been in place. We could not be happier with the quality of the service, and the food, with every visit. While sympathetic to the strains on the business the current COVID-19 environment has levied, it is amazing how well they've adjusted, making the outdoor dining experience as pleasant as possible. The meals, while in a more limited menu, have been spot on as always. More importantly, they've made the safety of guests a key part of their formula in these times, which makes for a stress free and relaxed atmosphere for the 1-2 hrs diners are there. I can't believe that I'm doing this, but it absolutely has to happen . . . WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Pubes and dirty bar rags in food! My girlfriend received a side of crab cake with the long, dark pubic hair that she didn't order. Waitress nearly bullshit us to death. It could not have been more obvious what the entity in question was. She rattled off three different excuses before settling on, "it's definitely a strand of crystallized sugar." Uh, ex-squeeze me? Baking powder? The girlfriend was none too please, and, honestly, we should've left at that very moment. After the crab cake fiasco I bit into my burger (entree) only to pull out an even longer piece of linen. A thick piece of string, if you will. Four inches in length. At least it wasn't a pube, right? RIGHT?! Well, if there's one thing that may actually be worse than a pube . . . Forget that. There's no worse offense than a pube in your food. They should be shut down for that alone. Health Inspector! No, no, no. It wasn't a pube in the burger. The string, as the waitress so idiotically informed me, was from a bar rag. Yup. She made a precarious situation even worse. Did I mention that she's a dullard? WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Pubes and dirty bar rags in food! The following is her initial response to her detective work: "It's not THAT gross. It's just a piece of kitchen rag, like, you know, what they wipe down the counters with . . ." Are you fu*king kidding me? "It's clean, though, I promise." Mind you her credibility was already in the shitter after Pubegate. I didn't know how to respond. I was dumbfounded. Motionless. I kid you not, I almost vomited. The waitress continued to defend the rag with painstaking loyalty while my girlfriend looked on in disgust and stopped eating her dinner immediately. You'd think that after all that they'd at least comp the meal, right? Wrong. She only took off the burger, which was also undercooked, by the way. Wait, no, scratch that. She took off the cheaper crab cakes instead. Honestly, after the Kraken pube and slime-ridden rag, I expected her to practically hand over the keys to her Ford POS. No such luck. Instead, I'm giving one of my former favorite restaurants 1 star. The last establishment that I fashioned with the lone star award promptly went out of business. I could care less if the Carriage House suffered the same fate. The waitress alone earned them that willful wish. WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! Pubes and dirty bar rags in food! Note: We used a Restaurant.com certificate and the waitress, an older woman of New England blood with dark hair and an overall horrendous attitude, actually insisted on arguing that the certificate would not work because I ordered a burger (which the certificate does not cover). Bitch, you just served us pube and rag with a fuc*ing smile! You bullshit us to the bank! My favorite part of the night (sarcasm alert) was when the Restaurant.com paper included a mandatory 10 dollar tip on the charge. I was stupid enough to leave an additional 4 bucks. So, on $40 tab, she received a whopping 35% all to herself. I suppose that's my fault, though, I should've left right after my girlfriend's tongue touched another man's pubes. It's a shame that I don't live in NH anymore because I'd be picketing the hell out of their parking lot every night come 5 PM. New management brought a nicely updated interior. However, the truncated menu is lacking, the service is pretentious and exorbitant pricing is misplaced. Not closed!! It's totally open! Reopened with new management, the guys from Louie's in Portsmouth. I had never been here before, but once I heard about the management switch we made it there as soon as we could. We were big Louie's regulars and have missed them so much since they had to close last year due to the next door fire. Anyway, these guys haven't missed a beat! Everything is absolutely exquisite: the food, the portions, the wine, the cocktails, the decor, the atmosphere, the service, the staff, the timing, the owners... seriously it's all perfect and the most professional and high quality I've experienced on the seacoast. These guys just make you feel like royalty, the way they treat you with utmost respect and warmth and hospitality. We'll be new regulars to make up for lost time at Louie's.
