I have been eating at the Carriage House in Rye, NH for many years. I did not know that the owners had retired and it is under new management. In the past, the menu had many tempting entrees, but now the menu is limited and the chef adds food items that the average diner does not want included in his food such as cauliflower, grits, olives, artichokes, etc. I took my husband for his birthday and he had a hard time finding something he could or would eat. In the past, he could find five entrees that he would like on the menu. The desserts are still good and the interior of the restaurant has been updated. I guess we will have to find a new favorite restaurant, so disappointed. read more

This restaurant is an unusual combination of gourmet food and a casual setting. The restaurant appeared to attract all comers. We were three guys, we saw many couples, we saw some couples who were obviously in love, and we saw some families. Locals appear to love the place, as many tables were interacting with one another. The food was very, very, very, very good. I had the penne and seafood in a cream vodka sauce. The next time that I return, I'm ordering the same meal again. It was that good. I ordered a glenlivet single malt scotch on the rocks. So, I can't really comment on the cocktails. It's hard to get this wrong, and they didn't get it wrong. Next time, I want to sit at the bar on the second floor. The view of the beach, from that location, will only make the experience that much better. read more

We just had a fantastic birthday brunch there with 5 adults and 2 young kids. We were respectfully accommodated and given an excellent and private table for our little event. The owner checked on us frequently, and our server was so kind and patient. The menu is inventive seafood cuisine, and is very seasonal. They had half priced bottles of bubbles that day which was a great bonus. Cocktails and all the food was excellent. The prices were decent for brunch of that caliber. Highly recommended. We wanted to take our hosts for the weekend to dinner, and we let them pick where we would go. They chose the Carriage House. This charming restaurant is steeped in history. It was originally opened in 1931 by Mrs. Swenson from Sweden. She was intent in preserving the look of the neighborhood, so she built this restaurant to look like the other homes in the area. Paul Mackey purchased the restaurant in 1983 and has maintained the charming atmosphere. They cook each meal to order. We were warmly greeted by Hannah, our server, who knew our hosts. We started out with a bottle of J Lohr Chardonnay - a crisp and refreshing chardonnay. They were offering several specials for the evening. We tried two cups of the Chowder. What is nice about this restaurant is that they offer two sizes of the dinner entrees. My husband enjoyed the Haddock Piccata - a lightly breaded haddock, sautéed in EVOO with lemon, capers, garlic and chardonnay. Our friend enjoyed the special of the evening - Sea Bass, while her husband had the Caesar Salad topped with flash fried Calamari. I was thrilled with the Tuscan Cheese Steak - shaved sirloin, caramelized onions, gorgonzola and Caesar salad neatly in a wrap with sweet potato fries. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. read more

This is one of our favorite 'go to' places on the NH Seacoast. We went last night, a windy and bitter cold NH winter night, because we knew that we would have a great meal in a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. The 'bead board' decor along with the roaring fireplace provided a great refuge from the cold night. We each had a 1/2 Caesar salad that was extremely fresh and tasty, hinting of anchovies but none could be seen, thank God, in the dressing. I had a 1/2 portion of excellent swordfish with a very good citrus-lemon sauce, accompanied by al dente (a little bit too much so, for my taste) vegetable medley and rice.There was plenty of food with the half-portion size. Why don't more restaurants offer this option? My wife had the haddock piccata and she loved it, as well. The crowning glory of the meal was a chocolate brownie that contained chocolate and caramel chips, with a nice scoop of excellent vanilla-bean ice cream; all covered by chocolate and caramel drizzle. A friend and I chose The Carriage House for our restaurant week destination this past November. I'm not sure what took me so long to check this place out! We sat upstairs which was such a great space - love the eaves and the wood tones. Such a cool, laid back vibe but with a classy twist. Our server was pleasant and sweet, and also helpful in picking out our dishes. The food was phenomenal! I had the delicata squash appetizer with feta and pomegranate which was an interesting combo and so tasty. My meal was the pork chop which was tender and juicy but the best part was the warm and soft spice cake - I am drooling just thinking about it. Definitely go check this place out! I would love to go again in the summer when you can probably see the water from upstairs. read more

We went to the Carriage house as part of a group and used their function room. The food was a variety of appetizers many of which were not even on their menu as regular items. The food was excellent and the waitstaff could not have been more accommodating for such a large group. My wife and I will surely be going back to enjoy the quaintness of the restaurant. We 6 had not been to The Carriage House since it has changed owners so when I looked at the menu on line I was not enthused to go for dinner however, we went last night and all 6 of us were completely blown away by not only the quality but how it's changed from a wonderful new England staple for the area to a top notch gourmet restaurant. we had 2 appetizers sallmon pate, fish chowder and 2 more that were specials and all were just terrific. we also had the Skate, seafood stew and the hanger steak - all of which were just outstanding. the folks who took care of us (Kristin) in particular were also the best...............do not wait just visit and you'll go again. read more

The Carriage House - Island lady - New American Near Me - Rye, New Hampshire

First of all, this place is NOT closed. It's under new management and was closed for a month while the teams and menu transitioned. The team that took it over are the team behind the former wonderful restaurant, Louie's, in Portsmouth. While the chef is also the same (from Louie's, Brett Cavanna), his menu has been adapted to pay more homage to the seafood-friendly location of being located directly across the street from Jenness beach. Gone are the charcuterie and numerous (and sadly missed!) pastas that Louie's was famous for, and in place are a bunch of delicious crudos, raw bar selections, and amazing fish dishes. He still brings a command of proteins (his lamb carpaccio for instance that I had last night was amazing, mild, and buttery, and most patrons seemed to be ordering the hanger steak, which sorely tempted me from the smell and presentation. But, this being Chef Cavanna, when I saw that he had a single pasta offering, I had to leap at it- and the Fettuccini with chicken was every bit as good as his pasta dishes always are. (It paired incredibly with the J. Lohr Syrah by the way- a hearty thanks to the wonderful Christina behind the bar who recommended i! Actually, she recommended all the dishes I ate last night, so... if you want a great meal- sit at the bar and eat what she tells you to. You won't go wrong. The food here is tremendous, the place is warm and inviting, and the location with windows overlooking the beach is lovely. For good or bad, the place is very popular, and so expect it to be packed, even on a mid-week night as it gets filled with happy eaters. You should consider making reservations, but if you didn't and there is a wait-- it's worth the wait. The best thing I've noticed at their restaurants is the atmosphere. Almost everyone who comes here feels like they are family (in a good way), and if you don't know the owners yet, after a few visits you will be part of the family of friends as well. They are inviting, warm, professional, and truly care about putting together the best dining experience possible for you. And that's why they seem to always get it right. Oh its re-opened now but don't go. My fiancee and I have been going to this restaurant since our first date and loved it. Last night we went for our last "date-versary" before we get married. What an AWFUL experience now. Apparently the restaurant has changed owners. The new owners completely destroyed the "feel" of the carriage house restaurant. They've modernized it and made it feel cold and sterile. The room was so cold because there is no more carpet or anything to keep the heat in. The fireplace which used to have a roaring fire was now empty and cleaned out. I am giving this "new" restaurant 1.5 stars only because the food is very good. Otherwise it would get one. The service was literally prob one of the worst experiences I've had. I've explained below but I would NOT recommend this restaurant and will not be returning. We arrived at 7:20 at which time I realized that I had been tricked. The entire restaurant was different. Being good sports we decided to try it. We were seated and water was poured for us. I am a younger blue collar worker however I don't appreciate being spoken to like I'm dumb. The waitress spent 3 minutes telling us how the menu "worked". We then asked the waitress for a minute to look at the menu. The waitress returned at 7:46. Thats 20 minutes. During that time the waitress was tending to the other "older" guests and literally ignoring us. It took over 12 minutes for me to get 1 drink ordered. When our entree's arrived they messed up my buddy's dinner and gave him the wrong meal. He said it was fine and started eating the one he was given. Then another waitress came by, switched plates with him, and made a condescending comment about how he should eat what he had ordered. We received dessert, which to their credit, they tried to make up for by giving us 2 extra. We left at approximately 9:40. OVER 2 HOURS. This was a very expensive meal and not worth the money, time, or most importantly the experience. It was not busy in the restaurant either. There were 3 other couples that I saw, most which got their meals and left before we even got our dinners. Bottom line I would NOT recommend this restaurant anymore. I have multiple friends who used to go here and now I'm sure none of us will be returning. I'm disappointed and saddened about this as I got engaged right outside of this restaurant because it was the spot of our first date. I guess it it time to move on and I suggest you do the same. read more

We had the Buffalo Shrimp app which I thought was delicious. Everyone was happy with their dinner - it was the last night of restaurant week. We have been to this restaurant four times in the past 2 years with another couple and we all rated it as one of our favorites. Last night (8 February 2014) we were deeply disappointed. The major issue was the food was served cold. The men ordered grilled salmon with asparagus as the vegetable. The asparagus was simply cold, the grilled fish not cold but not warm. The woman had Shrimp & Scallop Scampi and Filet Mignon. The Scampi was cold and had to be sent back for reheating (8 minutes). The meat dish had cold asparagus it took another 8 minutes to heat that. We wondered if giving our entree selections along with appetizers meant the both orders were submitted at the same time, hence the cold food. Some of us suspect it was the kitchen's fault, I leave the blame on waitress--she is our link to the kitchen. While the food was tasty serving it cold is unacceptable. In my younger days I worked as a waiter and unless your head in in the clouds you should know the food is cold. We are unlikely to return to the restaurant read more

For no particular reason, I hadn't been back here in almost 20 years--what a mistake on my part! A quiet restaurant where I don't have to shout over my food?? I didn't think such a thing existed anymore. Sat by the fireplace in the warmly lit dining room. Started with something that so many restaurants get wrong: the simple act of serving shrimp cocktail at just the right temperature, with fresh horseradish alongside the mild cocktail sauce, with plenty of lemon, on ice. Yum. The bread was warm, the butter, whipped and soft. The lemon poppyseed salad dressing perfectly light on a bed of just-right greens. Every element of the meal presented with care, without trying too hard, without any stuffiness or unnecessary show. Old-school charm and love and care. Great wine list. Steak au poivre vert--where else is that offered as a main course anymore? A lot of overpriced restaurants in the region would do well to close for a night and take their staff out to dinner at The Carriage House just to learn how it's done. I'll be back soon! read more

The "new" Carriage House was fabulous! A very welcome change from the tired old menu and outdated decor. Had a great dinner last night. Little necks on half shell were very fresh, skate wing served with creamy grits was perfectly cooked, octopus salad was as good as any we've had in Portugal and Spain. Of course, some patrons might be looking for same old menu but the new owners have very bravely tried to kick it up a notch with better quality, fresher more local ingredients. No longer is there the damp musty smell when you enter and gone are the dark drab window awnings. The effect is a clean crisp look with a new freshness to the dining room. For us it was truly a welcome change for the better and we wish the "new" Carriage House all the best. Keep up the good work and thank you for offering us a great addition to the local dining scene. read more

Gourmet food in an unpretentious setting with an ocean view and a great wine list. Who could ask for more? This restaurant has such a go with the flow atmosphere that I have felt comfortable no matter how I am dressed. The upstairs offers a nice view of the water during daylight and a romantic setting in the eveing. The music is never too loud so the upstairs (which I believe is carpeted) is a great place for conversation. On a busy night the downstairs tends to be a bit noisey, but the food is worth it. read more

Carriage House has always been our favorite but we are adjusting a bit to the changes with the new owners. Love the location and atmosphere but the menu has now become much more limited. We were happy to see Haddock Piccata back on the menu but would love to see more. Bring back the croissant sundae! Also, please stop charging for bread. The staff is friendly.... but not friendly enough to suggest eating upstairs where there is an ocean view. The food was (meh) just okay. We got ill after eating here. They are a Swedish family, but they make their own pasta (?) They serve rotating seafood specials starting at $32 a plate. The food is pricey.... way over priced. The hostess is in the wrong line of work. The fresh baked bread and desserts look good. The restaurant is an actual house so it is hard to spot, hence a lot of ederly local patrons, or maybe keep driving lol. The Beach Plum is down the street. read more

Consistent good food, cozy atmosphere, professional staff and a fantastic wine list makes the Carriage House a go-to restaurant. We marvel at their Steak au poivre and their take on the classic Indian curry dish will surprise - but recently they began to make the dish with rice pilaf, rather than the aromatic basmati which is terribly disappointing for a place that pays such attention to details. The classic is the 'Island Lady' lobster dish which is amazing! Upstairs is quaint with ocean views, downstairs by the stone fireplace on a cool night is perfect. A visit here is worth it. read more

The Carriage House was fantastic, we tried it for brunch. From the interior decorating (stunning) to the location across from Rye Beach (lovely views) to the food (especially!) everything was A plus. We tried the pancakes, home fries, breakfast biscuits, oysters, radish salad, and all sorts of other things. Everything was delicious, and the owner was friendly and came by to talk to our table and even provide us with a few extra dishes to taste. Located right across the street from the beach, this place has a nice view and great food. I came here with my boyfriend, who has a shellfish allergy. While there are many entrees which boast the frutta di mare, we unfortunately could not order it. That said, some of our choices seemed limited. Hence the four star rating. Despite this minor setback, which we have come to expect from many seafood restaurants, everything was wonderful. This place is very laid back. The servers don't wear uniforms. Our server, Adrien timed everything perfectly and was there whenever a glass needed to be replenished, but was never overbearing. For an appetizer we tried the Thai spring rolls, which were baked and not fried. They were really good, but there was only one other non-shellfish appetizer. For our entrees, I had the lamb, which was a special. It was cooked to perfection with a really thick, salty mushroom sauce. My boyfriend had the veal pasquale which I loved. It's topped with provolne and proscuitto that melts in your mouth. What I loved the most was that Adrien never rushed us and we sat and enjoyed our bottle of wine at our leisure. Then ordered desert. I went here for restaurant week, I got the wild boar pate, duck breast and pumpkin gelato. My boyfriend had the cheese ravioli, chicken Normandy and apple crisp. The food alone deserves four stars. The service was less then exceptional. Our waitresses was not warm or friendly in the least. Very cold and no nonsense. Put a bit of a damper on our romantic night out. Amazing dinner here over the weekend. We sat upstairs, which I imagine would have a nice view of the ocean but it was too dark out. The restaurant was really cozy and romantic, and not stuffy or pretentious like a lot of fine dining. Our server was so helpful and friendly and gave great recommendations. I started with a caesar salad and fettucine carbonara, the carbonara was better than a majority of the places in the North End. My husband had a mixed greens salad with a really good gorgonzola vinaigrette and Island Lady. Really fresh seafood. Then, our server told us we had to try the hot fudge icecream croissant. Perfect. Good size portions, prices are what you would expect for the quality of food. Would absolutely go back. There was a party going on in the banquet room upstairs . It looked beautiful, and I am absolutely going to keep them in mind if I have any event to plan in the future. read more

Great! This place has the perfect blend of atmosphere, delicious food and location. On the famous route 1a through NH seacoast, many tables have water and beach views. It's not just for the summer, some of our favorite meals have been watching the winter storms roll in off the water. The food is consistently exceptional on both their standard menu and specials. The haddock Picatta is very good. Every night they have a different version of a seafood chowder always delicious and reasonably priced. The majority of the menu is pricey but worth it and there 1/2 portions keep it affordable and are still quite sizable. Upstairs is a bit more casual with a cozy cabin feel and small bar. Downstairs a bit more formal. Same great menu in both locations. Wait staff are very friendly and make excellent recommendations. Take out from 5pm-6pm read more

Had a very enjoyable meal last night, a Friday. I made reservations earlier in the day and was glad I did because the parking lot was full when we arrived. But I was surprised to see so many open tables inside so I can only assume the popular upstairs bar was packed. Our party consisted of three adults and my teenage daughter and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had bacon wrapped monk fish and it was delicious. I also had the side of brussel sprouts, also very good. (The chefs are generous with the butter!) Our server was very personable and attentive. I'm dinging it one star because we had to wait an unusually long time for the food. We didn't mind since we were having a relaxing evening out, but it was surprising how long it took to get our food. We are local and tend go into Portsmouth when we want to eat out, but The Carriage House will be put on our dining out rotation. read more

Outstanding food and service! Brian, our server, was both helpful and entertaining and made the delicious food even more memorable. Swordfish kabobs = summer on a plate. However, all of our meals were fantastic. Definitely try the crab cake starter - wow! The food is pricey but worth every penny, and for a special meal it is worth the trip. If you have room for dessert, go for it. The fruit cobbler and chocolate croissant will not disappoint. We had three generations of diners with us and everyone had a wonderful experience. We go to Rye every year and will most certainly be back to The Carriage House (and request Brian!). read more

We were looking forward to visiting the Carriage House after hearing all they have been through. We were one of the first to appear at 5 and sat at the bar. We were excited to revisit since it changed hands and the menu looked wonderful. The Bartender was great until we were there for one hour and all other customers were served before us. We asked the bartender twice and another blonde girl behind the bar and nothing. The food was good but one hour to wait when we were the first there is unacceptable. We live locally and bad news travels fast. They should have at least said sorry for the inconvenience and comp a drink or something. I'm astonished after hearing what they have been through but couldn't say anything to us. Completely not acceptable. Never again and I live here not a visitor. read more

Long time resident of Rye and patron of the original Carriage House we were curious what the new owners would bring from their previous Portsmouth restaurant Louie's. Visited last night and can only say great things about the venue, wait staff and of coarse the food. Tried the Lamb Tartare, Farfalle, Roasted Cod and Whole Flounder. Over the top great. The Garden Variety cocktail could become a summer staple. We were to full for desserts but the offering sounded great. Will definitely be in our normal rotation. read more

I went to the old carriage house for 17 years and was admittedly very disappointed when I heard Paul sold it. However the new Carriage House under James' and RJ's direction is also outstanding. The interior was updated. It is now brighter and roomier. The menu is new and it changes from time to time so that's very different from the old carriage house. But there's always a variety and everything I have tried has been amazing. All of the people (some carry overs and many new) are fantastic. I highly recommend it. read more
