While visiting family in Long Beach, we were on the hunt for a steakhouse for a Sunday lunch and came across The Carvery. What we didn't expect, but absolutely loved, was their R&B brunch experience. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was lively, fun, and full of energy. The music completely elevated the atmosphere. The DJ not only had an incredible voice but truly knew how to engage and hype up the crowd, making the whole experience feel like more than just a meal. The location itself is beautiful with trendy and upscale decor. Very picturesque. As for the food, I ordered the Maui French toast, and it was phenomenal. It is not your typical French toast--it had a crispy churro crust and this unique whipped cream, the flavor and presentation really stood out. Sweet, rich, and perfectly prepared, it's something I've never had before and would absolutely order again. Overall, this was such a pleasant surprise. Great food, great music, great service, and a good vibey brunch experience. I have another trip to Long Beach in June and will be back to enjoy it again. Very disappointing experience. We ordered the steak, and it was incredibly dry, while the mashed potatoes tasted like frozen mashed potatoes you would buy from Walmart. The food was so bad that we barely ate any of it. When we brought this to the manager's attention, instead of addressing the poor quality of the food, she immediately told us we still had to pay for it. At first, she only offered 10% off and a slice of birthday cake, which was honestly insulting considering we couldn't even eat the meal. What made the experience even worse was that she tried to justify the poor quality by saying we came in late and that the food isn't the same at that time. That's simply not an acceptable excuse. If a restaurant is open and serving customers, the quality of the food should be consistent no matter what time you walk in. After going back and forth, she eventually increased the discount to 50%, but still refused to remove the meal from the bill, even though we barely touched it because it was inedible. We weren't looking for a free meal--we just expected food that matched the quality a restaurant should serve and customer service that takes legitimate concerns seriously. Alright Carvery. I see you. I hosted our department lunch here today and i would totally give them a 5 stars. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were the only table. Walking around DTLB we come across places that we bookmark for "next time" and this was one of those. Friends were visiting, so I made a reservation and hoped for the best. Well, this exceeded my expectations. We had a 6pm reservation, so we beat the rush and had a great table. Cheers to their Happy Hour! The hostess doubled as the bartender and assisted with serving as well. She was amazing. This place has been like a hidden gem for me. The first time we came during happy hour and had a Manhattan and a burger, both delicious and worth the price. We went last weekend to check out the holiday cocktail menu, and it did not disappoint. My favorite was the ginger bread martini but the mulled wine was also really nice. I finally made it to this place after living in DTLB for several years now. A beautiful restaurant with wonderful romantic looking booths, a nice U-shaped bar, and good lighting I get the feeling it's trying to define itself. We were greeted at the door by a young woman who seated us at the bar as we requested. She quickly brought water and then disappeared for a few minutes. A middle-aged man was standing at the far end of the bar as if he were a bartender and talking to two people. He never approached us and we thought 'lousy bartender'. Our young lady reappeared to take our drink order and explained that she was both the bartender and server at the moment; that the guy was the owner. Well, Lauren, was great but the owner needs to up his game. He could have strolled over to us, introduced himself, and explained that Lauren would be right back. The place was fairly empty at 5:30 on a soggy Friday night; and to be honest, it always appears 'quiet' from the outside. Regardless we inspected the Happy Hour menu but were not delighted. I would give this place a 4 normally, because of this. I get it that some restaurants just knock a few bucks off their drink categories and offer a few appetizers. So I would say that The Carvery's Happy Hour is nothing to beat the door down for. $3 off a $16 cocktail or glass of wine isn't going to bring a significant happy hour crowd, but I'm guessing management knows that as the Carvery owner owns a few adjoining places. Well, Lauren made us some good Bulleit Manhattans which was the bar bourbon. Skipped the $18 upgrade. We ordered the Spinach/Artichoke dip from the Happy Hour specials and were delighted at it's creaminess but not heaviness. We actually ordered another one as we later split a Fish and Chips (good crispy fries and the fish is light but is sparse); Brussel Sprouts which were good and served with a hummus like drizzle. The objective here is to have a boutique, upscale restaurant with good food and The Carvery achieves this objective; however, if it doesn't do a little something like a better happy hour, it doesn't seem to get enough traffic. Restrooms on the 2nd floor (yes there's an elevator) with a room that overlooks the restaurant and bar below. On the 3rd floor is a private venue room, which looks intriguing. Yes, I'll be back. Lauren is marvelous. She knows DTLB well, offers great service, and makes good drinks. Kudos to her. Live music by Lexi Algar was starting but we were off. read more

We tried the $85 prix fixed dinner menu for Valentine's Day, which came with an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The decor was very cozy and intimate, and they also had live music. Service was also great and they timed the courses perfectly. For the appetizers, the French onion soup came with a perfectly gooey cheesy, but the winter salad was too oily and the apples could have been cut into smaller pieces. I ordered the chimmichuri steak and it was cooked well, but I wish they used a different type of fries, as I prefer a crispier thinner fry. The butter cake was by far the best thing we had, the combination of textures and rich flavors was delicious, especially with the vanilla ice cream. I do want to start off by thanking the Carvery for taking a party of 21 on a Saturday about a week and a half in advance. My partner really wanted prime rib for his birthday but we could not find somewhere that would take our party. They have a nice set up outside with heat laps that they can seat big parties at one long table set up. There was live music playing inside and our waiter, Trevor, was really great. There were some hiccups, that I'll get to, but they never gave us a hard time for any of the requests we made regarding the mishaps. As I mentioned, we came for prime rib and it being called the carvery, we didn't think there would be an issue but they ended up running out of prime rib. Luckily, the birthday boy plus a couple others were able to order it, but many of us had hoped to order it as well. Next, several dishes came out cold, include birthday boy's prime rib. Some side dishes were cold and the French onion soup. We realized later that it looked like the food was coming from the bar, Shannon's, next door so it's possible the food was sitting and/or got cold during its travel to the restaurant. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare, but it was more medium and not very tender. I did like the poblano mashed potatoes! I also had a yummy Malbec to go with my meal. Others did really enjoy the fried chicken and fish and chips. Another plus was that happy hour is every day so we had 30 minutes to get some happy hour food and drinks (it's until 7pm). We were craving steak and decided to try The Carvery, a place we had never been to before--and we're so glad we did. There were four of us, we had reservations, and we were seated immediately. Our waitress, Jasmine, did a fantastic job and made the experience even better. All of us ordered the wedge salad, which is huge and easily shareable. I had the filet with rosemary mashed potatoes--the filet was a full 8 ounces and absolutely delicious. The prime rib sandwich was very good, and the ribeye was also excellent. Around 7:00 p.m., we were treated to a live band, which was a great bonus. Overall, a very enjoyable evening. We will definitely be back nice ambiance. read more

The fish was not crispy on the outside and was soggy. I was looking forward to that crunch on the outside with melt in your mouth fish on the inside. Our son wanted to come here for his elementary school graduation dinner. We made a reservation but when we arrived at 6pm we were the only ones there and the only ones when we left. So they definitely weren't too busy to provide decent service. Drinks took at least 15 mins. For a soda, wine and old fashioned. Again. The only people in the restaurant. We ordered 2 apps and 3 entrees. Our meals came out before the appetizer's so i told the server we had order apps and he said "yes, its all coming out together. I hope thats ok". My response "well i guess we dont have an option". No apology. Nothing. He walked away. Everything was cold. Appetizer's weren't touched. The crostini was stale. The only thing eaten was our sons steak. our bill was $200 and nothing was eatable. Having been a server for 15 years, My husband a gm we understand how this works. It was such a disappointment. Clearly the staff does not care. If i was the server and somehow didnt understand that appetizers come before the entree i would have apologized and comped the apps. I love dropping in here randomly in a weeknight with a friend. I actually came here for a birthday years ago and the live performer actually sang happy birthday to me without request and pronounced my name properly. I appreciated that a ton. They have comfort food options and also small bites and salads so I appreciate the variety when going with other folks. It's a cute space with an indoor/outdoor dining area which I love. In town in business and stopped in for dinner. No stairs, easy access, and easy to find. Plenty of booths and seats at the bar. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. My Cosmo was delicious as was the Flat Iron Bistro Steak. Erick recommended ordering medium rare and it was great advice - it was cooked medium and sliced. The broccoli stalk was fresh and buttery with garlic. I don't usually eat fries but these were crisp and the truffle cheese really took them up a couple levels from regular fries. Desserts are not on the menu, so ask if you want them. They are made in house. There were 3 choices. I ordered the butter cake to go since I was full. Lots of holiday decorations, so kudos to them on that. The singer was great but a bit loud if you're trying to have a conversation. I'm not quite sure what the vibe of this place is supposed to be.... Seems like a bar/cocktail lounge that wants to serve upscale food? The bar seems like a cool place to hang. The booths at the tables look like they are made for a diner, but they have filet mignon on the menu and burgers. A bit of an identity crisis? The brussels sprouts appetizer, charcuterie board and baked brie were nice. Mac 'n cheese left something to be desired. I got the filet and mashed potatoes and was not impressed. The potatoes seemed like they were missing a little something (garlic, more salt?) I asked for my steak to be medium-well and there was no glint of pink anywhere even though the cut was pretty thick. Fully well done in the very middle. How does that happen?! I don't know how my steak would have turned out if I had ordered it well done :( In summary, there were some hits and misses. Unique combination with the brie, pesto, roasted garlic, tomatoes, and caramelized onion. We finished this off first so it seems that it was a favorite. 5/5 wedge salad. We also shared this and it was necessary to lighten up from the other dishes. Refreshing and well balanced. 5/5 slow roasted prime rib. Slightly smoked and it makes a big difference in flavor. Tender, flavorful, and juicy. Highly recommend for prime rib lovers. Can't wait to order again. 3/5 hot fried chicken. Boneless chicken breast. It was crispy but im not much a fan of fried chicken breast so it was okay for me. The roasted poblano mashed potatoes was different and worked well with the chicken. 5/5 for butter cake and chocolate cake. Perfect for sharing. We also ordered numerous cocktails and they were okay. I recommend going with wine instead. Service was excellent-friendly, prompt, and attentive.
