I've heard so much about this place. A little hidden speakeasy with the entrance just off a little alleyway. You could walk by it and not notice it. A little lantern above is the where the door is. Buzz the doorbell for entrance. We had a reservation for Friday for drinks and maybe food. When we walked in, the hostess was very sweet. Our seating area was right when you walk in. A seating area along the corner and some ottoman. I didn't expect the place to be quite small. There's a couple of tables along the side and the bar area with seating. That's mainly it. And it was quite dark which was fine. Did have to turn the phone flashlight on to check out the drink menu..lol... Showing our age...lol... They specialize in Japanese style handcrafted cocktails. Menu did offer some unique drinks, a twist of a lot of classic drinks. Some were quite pricey compared to others. Besides the drinks which is what this place is known for, they did have some small bites on the menu. We didn't have any besides the edamame which I say was delicious. As it's known for drinks that what we came for. There was good amount of us so a lot of the choices were made and tried. Drinks didn't take long to arrive but first impressions. They didn't looked like anything major. Honestly they looked like a glass of water. Some had the trimming with the salt, while others was basically a massive ball of ice that took over the glass. They're known for their drinks which I must say people love it here. They were strong which you get your moneys worth. The fun details and illustration of the cocktail menu was great. Each had their own different taste. Besides all the drinks we ordered, they were good and strong. But for the place, it was ok. A small intimate room with limited 90 minutes seating for each booking. I don't like giving bad reviews, but our experience at Tokyo Noir was less than ideal. The drinks are fantastic. Super unique and each one we tried was fantastic. I was excited to see on the menu that they were serving Kinobi gin from Kyoto. I discovered this gin on a trip to Kyoto have since bought it regularly. To my surprise, when I saw the bartenders making the drinks they were using Gray Whale. Gray Whale is fine, but it's not in the same league at Kinobi. I realize Kinobi can be hard to find at times but If there's a substitution like that, the server should say something when you order the drink or if it's a recipe change, the menu should be updated. Speaking of service, that's what really brought me to write this re view. Before we even ordered we were told that we would only have 90 minutes. That honestly killed the vibe and made us feel rushed. Like the OpenTable confirmation even said we'd have two hours. And for tge rest of our time there our server pretty much ignored us. They forgot some of the food we ordered and shoved the check in our face when they wanted us to leave. I'm guessing they were stretched too thin? I think they need to hire another person to be a server or maybe get an extra bartender and have them wait on the people at the bar. At a bar like this service is everything. Moody, vibey Japanese speakeasy with delicious drinks that play bangers all night. Located on the side alleyway street next to El Barrio Cantina that is signaled by a hanging red paper lantern. Reservations are highly recommended for late weekends, but we have been able to walk up during the week. There is bar seating, low tables with couches, and high tables - any spot is a great spot and you can see the bartenders working their magic of cutting up ice, a little bar flair. The drinks I get most often: First love - delicious fluffy shaved ice that feels more like a refreshing summer dessert than alcoholic drink, juice theory - savory and umami, strawberry yuzu - sweet, strong, smokey. Food I get most often: Okonomi corn dogs and wasabi fries - the fries are the perfect bar snack. On some nights, bartender says we can request songs to be played (Seatbelts - Tank! has been our most often requested) Street parking or mini parking lot across the street. Parking around that time was rough!! lol we circled around for about 10-15 min for a space until we found a couple leaving about 2 blocks down. This place is tucked in an alley way and pretty easy to find thankfully! It's a small spot but very intimate. Our server gave us some time as we looked at the menu. I ordered the Astro boy and the hubby ordered the Hibiki old fashioned. We loved seeing the bartender carve the ice by hand. They played hip hop music which is always a vibe! We hadn't seen each other in half a year--life had been heavy since the recent passing of husband ,but that night gave us room to breathe and connect We tried the corndogs that somehow hit the soul, and the drinks? I booked a reservation on open table and it was smooth. Once I arrived I wasn't sure where this place was exactly. I ended finding myself asking the host from El Barrio Cantina and she guided us to the right entrance. Once we located the entrance on the left side of the building through the alley and saw the red lantern. We saw a few people waiting and we were 3 min late but we were told by other people the host comes out every so often. The host came and greeted us and sat us on the bar. She later handed me the menu and it was so cool - like a comic book! I did order the yuzu strawberry but it was no longer available for the night and went with the it's MG. Absolute banger! Location: The bar itself is tucked away on a side street, if you've ever been to Long Beach you know how parking goes. For those unfamiliar, you'll be able to find a spot near, just drive up or around the block. There are plenty of walkable restaurants, and such in the area it's a well placed gem. Once you're invited in, and take your cozy seat (this place is very small...adds to the charm) you can sit, and realx for a second before being approached. When you are seemingly ready, your menus will be presented with all the options for the day. Food/drinks: Like I mentioned before, you're not getting the same ole thing like every other bar. The drink menu evolves over time. I've seen different items on a bi-monthly basis. Not everything changes, and it shouldn't. There are some staples I couldn't imagine going away. The Astro Boy for example, is such an incredibly crafted drink. It's sweet, but the citrus is prevalent. It's got a great froth texture to the drink itself, topped off with a lil Astro boy so you don't forget what you're sipping on. From a "non-vodka" drinker, this is magic. The food does not lag behind. I had a perfectly medium seared beef tapas. Later I tried the wasabi fries, loved the fries...still don't like wasabi. But I was trying something new. Overall the food was excellent, it came out fresh and well flavored. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Tokyo Noir yet. Although it's long overdue, it's definitely a spot I would recommend for those looking for well crafted tasty cocktails. The bar team behind this spot is cranking out some amazing drinks. I'd definitely recommend making a reservation ahead on OpenTable as the space is small and it can get busy. Parking here can be tough as there's no dedicated lot and Long Beach parking in this area sucks. Tokyo Noir is hidden in the alleyway behind El Barrio Cantina. They have a small food menu but make sure to come earlier if you want to eat as they close their kitchen earlier relative to their closing time. As for the drinks, they're all fun and unique. There's something for everyone and I love they're bringing a bit of Japanese bar culture to California. You can watch them chip away at ice bricks to make spheres of ice for their old fashioned. Came here the other night for some drinks and ended up staying for dinner. At first I wanted to go else where for food but glad I gave the food here a chance. We ordered a couple of drinks I ordered the Mezcal High all and my partner ordered the Kaiju. I enjoyed my drink very smooth and refreshing my partner wasn't feeling her drink. Hands down my favorite bar in Long Beach. The creativity in the drinks and the precisness that you would need to make these flavor profiles work is something else. If you're open minded about your drinks and appreciate good craftsmanship when it comes to mixology, this is your spot. So as most people now know, you book online 2 weeks out. Compared to when it first opened, it's much easier to find reservations so we were finally able to check it out without staying up past midnight to book it. If you uber there, you get dropped off in front of a Mexican restaurant and you go down this alley along the side. You go up to the door and press the "on" button to the right and you get brought in, speakeasy style. The spot is dark, elegant and simple. Maybe 8-10 spots along the L-shaped bar and maybe 4 separate tables. Not a great place for a big group, maybe 4 people max. The menu will blow you away. The flavor profiles and ingredients they use defy logic. Sea urchin foam? Soba broth? A shaved ice drink? It's wild but it all works. I started with the soba drink. It had shaved daikon on top which is a bitter vegetable root commonly eaten with soba. It was like drinking soba broth and it was pretty good. I switched to somethibg sweeter with the castella banana drink (sorry don't remember the name) which was delicious. Not too sweet and the flavors were well balanced. I finished with the ichiro old fashioned. A strong drink but an excellent old fashioned that had some interesting flavors. We also got food - the bao buns, corn dogs, salmon roll, and the wagyu roll which was our favorite. Slightly spicy, excellent flavors. Loved it. The only bummer is they limit your time to 90 minutes. I get why but it would be nice if you could enjoy your drinks and hang longer. But otherwise, great service, even better drinks. Definitely amazing. read more

This place was such a vibe! I got a last minute reservation on a Friday night. Parking was tricky, but we got a street spot on a side street. We were sat immediately and had our orders taken right away. They have some light bites and some sushi roll options, but otherwise seems like mostly drinks. So fun to watch the bartenders almost perform as they make the drinks: hand carving ice under light, doing fancy long pours, so cool. We split wasabi fries (lots of wasabi) and corn dogs (so good!) and got a hibiki old fashioned and an Astro boy. This speakeasy has a cool intimate lounge vibe, smaller than I expected but really nice. The edamame was toasty, spicy and a little lemony. This was my first time trying oysters and they were seasoned great, they're nice and cold! The rolls were great, the baked crab and the truffle salmon roll practically melts in your mouth. Only thing I was potentially expecting was maybe a skirt steak option, maybe a good idea to add to the menu but everything was perfect, 10/10. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable of their menu to give good recommendations. The astroboy is pretty good, tastes sweet like calpico. The only drink we weren't too crazy about was the melon drink "kaiju", strong and wasn't to our liking. The first love is a guava, snowy type of drink it was a great way to end the night. There wasn't any like birthday dessert or treat that we know of. Parking, I think you can park in the cantina parking? The bartenders are truly so talented at creating an experience for customers. The drinks are consistently stellar. I came here at a reserved time during a bar hop on Fourth Street. Finally made it here over the weekend to see what all the hype is about. Tokyo Noir really is a hidden gem! The entrance is tucked down a little alley behind another restaurant, marked only by a glowing red Japanese lantern. The whole space is tiny (I think only 28 seats!), which makes it feel intimate, cozy, and perfect for a slow, intentional cocktail night.They specialize in crafted cocktails with real artistry behind the bar with bartenders carving huge blocks of ice by hand and building drinks with Japanese-inspired ingredients and layers of flavor. Drinking here feels more like a thoughtful, culinary experience rather than a casual night out. We came as a party of 5 and tried a bunch of drinks and food: Cocktails: Astro Boy - Citrus and floral. Pretty, but not for me. Drunken Tiger - You can definitely taste the layers: veggie, herbal, bitter, sweet. If you appreciate depth and nuance, this is your drink. Juice Theory - SO good we ordered it four times. Absolutely delicious! Hibiki Old Fashioned - My order. Gorgeous presentation and I loved watching the bartender carve the ice... but the giant ice block made it a little hard to sip from the glass lol. Ichiro Old Fashioned - My boyfriend's pick. I ordered two rolls that were delicious, tuna and Salomon. I liked the salmon better. I also ordered the wasabi fries and they were amazing. My sister-in-law made us reservations to Tokyo Noir so when we arrived at the location, we were promptly greeted at the door and seated. Upon first observation, the place is small - probably accommodate 20-25 people between the bar seats and the few tables around the room. The place is bathed in a soothing red light that set the tone of our experience. The server looked like she was the only one talking orders though she has help with the food drop off so everything pretty much was like clockwork. The drinks were definitely well made. I started with the soba cocktail (don't remember the exact name) but it was served in a soup bowl and it was savory - I loved it. It was definitely spirit forwarded but the saltiness and especially after you stir in the daikon, was so delicious. On the second round, I ordered the yuzu strawberry. This was a much more straightforward drink (not unfamiliar) but still delicious. I also got to try the First Love (YUM) and the Astro Boy (also YUM). As for the food, we ordered almost every item on the menu but the standouts were the charred edamame, corn ribs and wagyu skirt. As mentioned, the place is small so I don't recommend coming with a party larger than 6 at most - 2 or 4 are ideal. I want to come back and try more drinks! read more

This is a fun spot that gave New York vibes with the small intimate setting. Decor is a bit lack luster and could be so much more. The best part of the evening was the ice shaping. Something unique and different. The dessert drink we mistakenly ordered at the beginning but we went mad it was tasty and refreshing. We tried the baos and every sushi roll. Tokyo Noir is a modern bar with most of the elements of an actual speakeasy. Tokyo Noir is located on Retro Row, within the Franklin School neighborhood of Long Beach. As you are travelling along 4th Street, there is no obvious signage for this bar. So how do you find it? Look for "El Barrio Cantina" restaurant. On the west side of the building, there is an alley. The alley is clean and well lit. You will see a red Japanese lantern hanging above the entrance. The entrance is decorated, to signal that something special is inside. Follow the instructions on the door to gain entry. This is a small bar. There are (maybe) 10 seats at the bar. There are five high-tops along the back wall, which can each accommodate a couple. There are two lounge areas than can each accommodate 8-10 people. Make reservations if you want to ensure the bar can accommodate your party. The bar has everything necessary to make conventional cocktails. But the reason to go is for the house's unique creations. They have a menu with hand illustrations of their crafted cocktails, along with descriptions. Have you every had an adult beverage based on Hawaiian shave ice before? The menu also has a limited list of shareable small bites. These are tasty. This is an smaller space; if the room is crowded, it can get noisy. But it is a nice place that is decorated well. The cocktails are truly crafted; and the small bites tasty. BTW ... If you are not from the area - yeah, parking can be a pain. I'm afraid this place was so good that I blacked out and only got a photo of one item. I tried almost all of the appetizers and Crudo's but did not try any of the rolls. I would highly recommend making a reservation, even though they say on their social that you might not need one. I think the word has gotten out and people really have found out that this place is one of the best places in Long Beach. I tried the two sweeter cocktails that are on the menu, which is designed so beautifully in artistically. The waitress also told me that the sweet drinks are in the front of the menu and it's designed to go less sweet to bitter as you turn the page. The red lighting inside creates this very cool, mysterious exclusive feel, and the musical soundtrack the night that I went was 100% exactly what I wanted to listen to on my birthday. This speakeasy was definitely a vibe! I really liked the moody but intimate feeling lent by the decor and lighting. Watching the bartenders shape ice cubes for certain cocktails was really cool too. We really wanted to try the First Love (shaved ice) but weren't able to...something about the machine not working that day, which was a disappointment. However, we were given shots on the house that tasted like plum wine. They were pretty strong, much like the other drinks that we tried. I'm always a hoe for yuzu-flavored items so I ordered the Okinawa Gimlet and it was fresh and mouthwateringly tart, definitely satisfying. My friend ordered the Yuzu Strawberry. I didn't taste as much yuzu in this one but it was very smoky. I felt that the food items were all reasonably priced and yummy. I tried the eel hand roll, no complaints there. The wasabi fries were nice to snack on and we really enjoyed the flavor combinations from the wasabi, potatoes, and aioli. Grilled squid was tender, would have enjoyed a bit more of the spicy sauce that they provided to go with the squid. Now I do understand this is a speakeasy, hidden type bar, however the noise is quite unbearable. Yes, speakeasy is not a requirement but at least it would be nice to be able to hear what your friends talk about. The drinks we got were good and very close to the description. There was a drink in the form of gummies caught us by surprised. We really thought it was a drink, turned out to be 3 pieces of alcohol infused gummies for $12. Though, we really enjoyed the shaved ice dessert, probably our favorite of the night. Overall, our experience could've been better considering the whole vibe being kinda off, with a not-so-gimmick drink in a form of gummy. Save your trip for a better speakeasy bars! read more

Hidden spot in Long Beach. The waiting area is a well lit alley. You've found this place when you see the red lantern on. There is button you can push and someone will open the door and ask if you have a reservation. Once your time is up, you'll be welcomed into a dark room with a few tables and bar. Great great service above all else and that's saying a lot because the food and drink was so so great!! Jasmine was so accommodating when we showed up on the wrong day for our reservation lol. Tokyo Noir for the WIN! What a fantastic experience we had last night! Connor was our bartender & so nice, warm & welcoming. We each had 3 drinks, Monochrome (specific name??) was the win for the Mrs & friend. I loved all the ones I tried but, if I had to pick a favorite it would be that truffle old fashioned Foodwise - loved the wasabi fries, both those and the edamame were addicting. The blue fin tuna tostada was a delicious surprise, the sauce gives you burnt tortilla feels. I think the corn dogs were the win though. And, I don't like corn dogs lol. Tokyo Noir is the cool place to be right now. Located down an alley behind El Barrio Cantina, they're reservation only and you have to be in the know as there's no signage. The big draw here is their craftsmanship and high end cocktails. Their ice cubes are flown in from Japan and hand carved. It's quite impressive to watch so I suggest you sit at the bar. We tried the Hibiki Old Fashioned, which to be honest felt like what you expect from an old fashioned. Simple and well-made but nothing unexpected except the giant ice sphere that's taller than the glass and makes for a very funny way to sip your drink. I preferred the Astro Boy or Drunken Tiger as they're both vibrant and fun. All cocktails are around the $18-$22 mark with the truffle old fashioned landing even higher. Don't come hungry but they do have some small bites for bar snacks. I really enjoyed the Bao Buns, and also tried the grilled squid which again is simply simple. The music vibe is old school hip hop and they have some cool photography adorning the walls. For all the hype I expected the drinks to feel more unique but it's a place worth checking out once. read more

Food: 4/5 Bun Bao were really tasty, good amount of pickle veg, meat, seasoning, definitely one to try. Corn dog was ok, not what I expected because it didn't really have that breading a corn dog normally has but overall a nice surprise. The dessert is awesome, ask for extra topping, very delicious. The Cocktails are all great, most are a Lil strong but very flavorful for all, you really can't go wrong. Service: 4/5 Staff was relatively quick and attentive. Bartenders really did a great job! Ambience: 3/5 Location is a bit hidden and parking is a bit tough. The area is really small so large groups might be a challenge. Love the decor and layout, just a bit tight. read more

I got the Astro Boy, which was refreshing and delicious. My friends' drinks were great too. Would definitely come back to try other drinks. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Super-cool, super-small cocktail bar best for date night. The hubby and I've been here twice now and both times we've been impressed. The first time we were there at 5, but we'd made the same reservations error that others have, where we'd reserved under el barrio instead of Tokyo noir, but luckily they were able to squeeze us in as long as we left by 7:30. The second time we'd made reservations for 8:30 (for the correct place this time), and I think we preferred getting there early, before the place got really wound up. It was a much more relaxing vibe, but then again, we're old. The decor is all dim lights and eclectic fun, a squadron of Japanese oni masks vying for wall space with black and white photos of SoCal rappers and lowriders. So far we've tried the following drinks and food: - Hibiki old fashioned (my fave, but one of the spendiest choices) - Nutorious (the hubby's fave) - Drunken Tiger (citrusy and refreshing, love the Korean spicy cucumber garnish) - Astro Boy (refreshing and sweet, but not overly so) - Japanese high ball (refreshing palate cleanser) - Mezcal high ball (very smoky but refreshing) - Wasabi fries (perfectly fried, with yummy accompanying dipping sauce) - Grilled Squid ( perfectly grilled) - Deviled eggs (decadently rich, bordering on too salty) - Charred edamame (wonderful smoky edge in a spicy soy chili sauce) - Grilled Corn (charred corn "ribs" topped with Parmesan crisps) We loved all the drinks and food, and also loved the showmanship of the bartenders as they made the drinks and hand-sculpted the ice cubes/balls (ice flown in from Japan!). Both times we sat at the bar and we think it's the best spot. Two things give me pause on a full five stars, though: Reservations are a pain, which I get because it's such a tiny and popular new place, but there's no spontaneous dropping in here. I have them saved in my OpenTable app and check their availability from time to time. Perhaps as their newness wears off the reservation situation will improve. Also, since this place so small, it is best for an intimate date night than a group outing--their largest seating is for four and it looked pretty cramped with tiny tables at shin-level. It can get kind of loud, so trying to talk to someone not right next to you could take some effort. Finally, it is a bit spendy, but I think the quality of their products and service doesn't make it outlandish. We're fans and look forward to our next visit. read more
