Probably a 3.5 but that is not one of the choices. Open 24 hours, OK not really, but when it is, it is good. Very reasonable prices (in this day and age). Good food is prepared and served promptly. The place is clean with nowhere to hide. There are about a dozen seats around the kitchen. Served as a mostly a to-go operation. Not health food but not meant to be. This is a casino/bar type grill that sits above a dive but below a bistro with the prices & service to match. Admittedly, if I plan to eat here, I always have a back up plan or two just in case it is closed. You can call ahead to see if they are open or place a to-go order (YMMV). Omg what can I say about this little hole in the wall gem?. Well I'll start with it was unexpected, but I found Cal Neva casino by word of mouth and I was walking by the Casino grill near the escalators they have typical American favs like patty melts, philly cheese & 3 different types of chicken wing sauces. I got the patty melt the first visit & the 2nd visit I got the chilli dog with fries and a drink so delicious. You can also add a second patty to your patty melt to make it a double for not much more. I gave this little place 4 stars, because the service was extremely slow and sometimes the staff working will close the place down while they sit in a corner all because they were tired or didn't want to stay open, but I'm sure he was on the clock I asked him and he said it was little busy so he wasn't taking orders anymore. I didn't complain due to the fact that he seemed to have issues which I know not my problem I wanted food, but came back the next day and a different guy was there I got good service but still slow, talked alot & also seemed to have some kind of life issues I'm not sure if Cal Neva employees are from a prison release program or what, but if they are I'm glad they can be employed at Cal Neva, but if not Cal Neva needs to be more selective about who they employee. My favorite thing in the whole wide world is a "Patty Melt" and whenever I see one on a menu it's like one of those things that I have to order. This little grill area churns out some serious good eats and it's wallet friendly as well. It makes choosing between slots and food a bit easier, and here are my overall opinion of "Casino Grill" Saturday April 21, 2018 Location: Casino Grill (Cal Neva) Reno, Can People: 2 Adults Story: Well it was post "UYE" and seeing that I hadn't eaten nothing most of that day I needed to eat. It was a bit too early for the "Prime Rib Dinner" @Top Deck Steakhouse, so I decided to get something from the "Casino Grill" one of my favorite spots in DT Reno, plus the good smells from the little diner going throughout the casino, how could I resist. I have always loved the "Patty Melt" here, so I knew exactly what I wanted. Service/Hospitality: What I have always liked (In my opinion) of coming to Cal Neva though the years is the service. When it comes to the "Casino Grill" I've always liked the various people that's worked here. It's a kinda close quarters facility in it's own little spot within Cal Neva and the workers have always been pretty personable. The guy on duty this day was no exception. I was pleased from start to end and I commend Cal Neva for having good service. Food/Cleanliness: I'm not beating around the bush, "The Patty Melt Meal aka #6" $6.25 is so worth it. Like it's super fresh and they make it right in front of you. Like if you know what a "Patty Melt" is, Beef Patty, Cheese, Grilled Onions, Rye Bread and deliciousness. What I really like about this place also is the fact they use "Shoestring Fries" the best type of fries IMO. Super great here overall and made super fresh and right in front of me! Paired up with the included drink I have to say that I got my money worth oh..I also had a "Bud light 16oz can" $2.00 on the side. The prep area and seating was clean and wiped down and the worker payed very good attention to detail. A overall A+ establishment. Overall: The Cal Neva has it going on, and they got the food thing down. Be it from the "Top Deck Steakhouse" to the "Casino Grill". The grill though I feel has a flair all of it's own and is slightly more appealing because of the offerings, a simple yet satisfying menu. "The Casino Grill" is a popular option for many as it's humble and the prices are pretty reasonable. I would totally recommend this place to anyone. It appears The Grill is now categorized in a separate entry, so here's my two cents (bits and parts are also included in my mainstream review for the Cal Neva - kudos to whoever put it in a separate category!) The little greasy spoon fits in perfectly with the rest of the Cal Neva atmosphere on the Virginia Street side. Usually open 24/7, although there might be brief periods when they're closed down for cleaning - I've only seen it happen twice, between 3-5 am. A word to those paying with comps: this is the only place on the property that I know of that requires getting a comp slip from the Slot Club vs. simply sliding your card as payment, so keep this in mind, as the Slot Club isn't open during the wee hours, which is usually when I hit up The Grill. Also, it helps to get an exact price estimate on your food bill before getting the cash voucher, because The Grill doesn't give change back on comp slips. To the left are the mainstream numbered menu board specials, where each item includes fries and a drink. The Cal Neva did away with their brand name soft drink/energy drink products some time back, so as long as you don't mind generic cola, you should be okay. It comes in a classic styrofoam cup with a snap-on lid. Keep in mind that most of the menu items are also available a la carte (there's a small menu board on the extreme right hand side of The Grill,) but they seem to be a lot cheaper by ordering the specials. Skip the little packet versions of condiments they give you, and go for the real thing just to the left of the bar seats: huge ketchup and mustard pumps with to-go squat cups! Some must-tries: The Phat Philly - I honestly haven't seen anyone out west that knows how to prepare a cheesesteak with real Cheez Whiz. If it's not your thing, they'll gladly substitute real grated white and yellow cheddar. And lots of it! The peppers are actually red AND green, which is something you don't see too often. Adding extra jalapeño peppers makes it ten times better, and if you're not a big onion fan, beware, as they are prepped and mixed in with the peppers before cooking. They'll gladly pick them out prior to cooking if you ask nicely, though. The Egg McNeva - as good as it is, I've often wondered if the Cal Neva ever took any heat from the McDonald's corporation for the name? Oh well, it's offered with both bacon as well as ham, and both are excellent. The english muffin is toasted directly on the grill. The Half Pound Hot Dog - awesome, and uniquely prepped. It's already cooked, but is butterflied and thrown directly on the grill, giving the outer casing a crispy, good flavor. I found it to be tons better than the Awesome Dog at the Nugget, and much cheaper too. Even those little prepackaged blueberry muffins and danishes up for grabs there are great. I've unfortunately found the burgers to be a bit bland in comparison to those at the Top Deck upstairs. Hit it up at the right time, and some of the dining characters you'll encounter are worth the trip in itself. Free entertainment to say the least! CAUTION: As good as this place is, don't attempt to eat here for more than three consecutive days. Call some friends if you've got comps to drain, because you'll feel like drinking a gallon or two of Janitor in a Drum if you go for the long haul here, as I recently did. But yeah, it's really that good! read more

I'm wondering if this is one of those cases where the people posting are already so drunk that they thought the food was awesome but in actuality, it was the trash I received last night. Let's start with the horrible service from the only guy working, even after countless "thank you's & yes pleases" we couldn't even get ONE acknowledgement of our attempt at being friendly. Apart from the strange crowd I experienced, this place isn't too bad. It was packed, and the only person working was a younger guy who was taking all the orders and also cooking everything. He was working tirelessly to keep up with all the orders. I received my chicken tenders very quickly, and they weren't too bad. Meals there are very cheap, so if something doesn't suit you at least you didn't spend an arm and a leg on it. 3 stars is for the location; I'd say if it were somewhere else I'd come more often, but calneva attracts quite the crowd. read more

Hey, the Top Deck and the steak house get their own review sections ... why not the Casino Grill? It's the little snack bar that you belly up to on the 1st floor. Has some different combos and menu items than the Top Deck upstairs though, thus the review. Generally it's a little cheaper than even the cheapo Top Deck - burgers, cheese steak, hot dog, chicken or fish sandwiches, gyro or doner kebab with fries and a soda runs anywhere from $6-$8 depending on what ya get. Phat Philly (7.50 for combo) - Indeed earns the Phat title, at least in size ... the meat is on the bland side, bread sucks and I'm sure some dude from Philadelphia will cruise through here and be like WOW THE WEST DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO DO PHILLIES like anyone cares, but you can get two meals out of this huge mother easily. I use the Cheez Wiz as dipping sauce for the fries then put a little steak sauce on the Philly at home to liven it up. Burgers (6 for cheeseburger, 8 for double cheese) - Disappointingly thin patties after the monstrous size of the Philly, and same cheapo rolls, but otherwise an OK burger. The fries are the real redeeming quality here, they're thick and really pretty good. Better off hitting the Top Deck if you want a burger tho. 1/2 pound hot dog - Good. I think this was 5 or 5.50 for the combo, can't quite recall, was a little tippled when I ate this one Take-out fee is only 50 cents which is very reasonable compared to most casino eateries (it's usually 2 or 3 bucks). read more

The best place to eat when you're on the strip in Reno and do not feel like that restaurant dining experience. A simple grease spoon in Cal-Neva casino, there's a wonderful selection of standard fare food items from the grill/fryer. The food is out in no time, hot off the grill. You can denitiely satisfy your hunger pangs at this little eatery and wash it down with a $1 Bud or Bud Lites as well. We came here two nights in a row after a full day of snowboarding at Squaw. All I can say is the food hits the spot, especially in that cold Reno weather! 5 Stars for: -The food: The Double Burger, Fat Philly, and the Patty Melt were so good! For under $7, you get the sandwhich, fries, and unlimited soda. For piggies like us, it's a good steal. -The service: We were helped both nights by Sean, who was a really nice guy who just started a couple of weeks prior. Service was excellent and it was even nice to chat with him two nights in a row. -The locals who love this place: A lot of nice people who live locally come by here and make small talk as well. Reno has very friendly locals. -Being open 24 hours: If you get that rumblin' in your tummy, you can come here any time! We come to Reno for a week every year, and will be back again next year. YUM. I come down to eat here every night I'm at work. I get the grilled cheese, add tomatoes please. I mean, yea that's pretty simple and easy. I also branched out one night when I was feeling adventurous and got a hot dog split in two with cheese in the middle. yum. I ordered a double burger but Carolyn (bless her heart), made me a patty melt instead. I didn't have the heart to tell her she was making me the wrong thing because I hate to see good food go to waste. Boy, am I glad I didn't. The patty melt was great! My wife got the philly and was not disappointed. Fries were good, too, cooked in fresh oil. The food was delicious, pretty quick and cheap. I got the prime rib and hash browns or french fries, which came with soup for $5.99. One of my friend got the steak and eggs special for $4.99 and added delicious texas toast for only $.69. And my other friend got some type of breakfast skillet. Everyone loved their food, loved the prices and liked the service. We ate, played keno, and really enjoyed the entire experience. Will go again when we return to Reno. read more

Well if you want a divey and kind of falling apart casino, then head downtown to the Cal-Neva. The plus is that the tables are cheap. $.25 roulette and $2 blackjack. Awesome. Sadly I had no luck with the slot machines. Parking is free. The building is a little confusing and the decor definitely needs an upgrade. But the karaoke in the bar area was really popular. Don't expect any great singers, but it was definitely entertaining. read more
