Went in with my well-travelled daughter and a friend recently moved from Dallas,TX & We all concur...best restaurant in the area--OH AND BTW, America's Best Restaurants also thinks so, because they were there filming an episode! We all got cocktails which were generous pours of top shelf liquor and, of course, delicious. And the foooddd!!! Just so well done and inventive and fresh! First of all you should visit Corning NY (I live an hour away but you should go if you live across the world). After spending the day at the Corning glass museum, which is totally incredible, you should eat at The Cellar. The menu looked fine when I looked online - honestly the fact that this new American, farm to table-style restaurant had so many international dishes gave me pause...usually this is a bad sign in my experience. Often these places make bad interpretations of international classics. I could not have been more wrong. Upon entering the cellar I was still not convinced. The decor was certainly nice but did not read "culinary genius"...in the end this was one of the best meals of my life. To start, my hazy NYC IPA was fruity and scrumptious and my wife's strawberry elderflower basil cocktail was to die for. Perfectly balanced, shards of crushed ice - complex even. We got a focaccia appetizer because we needed something to come fast and it wasn't the expected overcooked bread with forgettable olive oil. It was the best focaccia I've ever had. Crunchy on the outside, unrealistically moist on the inside, two ramekins of olive oil that were rich and bitter and wonderful. For an entree I had a piece of expertly pan seared halibut over polenta with avocado salsa verde, and orange and fennel salad. I literally licked the plate, embarrassing my wife enormously. The fennel and orange was fresh and crunchy, the fish melted in my mouth, the polenta was shockingly full of flavor. She got the Harissa Cauliflower (though she agonized over whether to get the harissa shrimp) and again it was otherworldly good. On our honeymoon, we had Moroccan dishes with harissa at the famed Paris mosque (couscous merguez) - this harissa cauliflower was probably the best vegetarian plate I've ever had (certainly better than the meal I had at the famed Moosewood vegetarian Restaurant in Ithaca) Incredible, fragrant harissa cauliflower, strongly tahini hummus, perfect local cherry tomato halves, vibrant cilantro chutney. The dessert options all looked amazing and after a perfect meal, we had confidence that they would all be good. We went with the banana split, which is a personal favorite of mine. Cleary house made stewed, cherries, pineapple sauce, bitter chocolate sauce, and vanilla ice cream with flecks of bean. We literally ate every last bit of every last food on every plate that touched the table. Even the tiny pots of olive oil were completely empty. Every drink completely empty. Our waiter was the only remaining member of the wait staff who had been there since the place open 17 years ago and he was a delight, we overtipped given this being a once in a lifetime meal. There you have it, that's all I have to say. Skip this place at your own peril. I told my wife this chef deserves a Nobel prize for Peace and literature. I was flabbergasted. read more

The restaurant deco is very nice. The service is good. Our waiter was friendly. If it is only these 2 factors, I would give it a 4 stars. For appetizer we ordered the Mutabal. It was good. I was looking forward to the New York strip steak. It was a let down. The flavor was good and was cooked to order (medium rare). However it was VERY tough. I don't even know if it is a choice grade. My partner and I ordered the same, but he had a real steak knife with serrated edge. It looked the same as mine and I did not realize that mine had a smooth edge. Being celiac is very hard when going out to eat many times there are things labeled as gluten-free but they're really not. This is actually gluten-free. Hands down the BEST nicer dining experience on market street if you are a foodie and wine aficionado. The vibe can be casual but also nice enough for business dinners and special occasions. Surprisingly, the vegan cheese board is drool worthy (even for non vegans) and the spicy chicken and waffles is always a favorite. Lamb lollipops are to die for. The smores dessert is the best experience in the winter and their extensive wine cellar and cocktails are fantastic. From the outside and inside, you'd never get the impression this is a place that serves delicious food and has a bartender that really knows his fine cocktails, but it was all that and more. I had the lamb lollipops and was blown away. The attention to detail with presentation and taste was perfect. The arugula salad with strawberries was good as well. I added an interesting blue cheese. For dessert I had the cannoli. I'd say it was a 7/10 (a bit dry) but I loved the story about it being the bartender's grandmother's recipe. The menu is varied and I only wish I had had room for more. We were excited about dining here because of all the great Gluten Free reviews. Perhaps expectations were extremely high because of that. My guy enjoyed the food more than I did and he has to eat gluten free. He loved the lamb lollipops and the sauce. They were perfectly cooked medium rare. I thought the one I had (which was two bites) was okay but nothing special. He ate the other two. Didn't like the chickpeas as they were too salty for me. My guy puts salt on everything so he ate them but they were not special. The flat bread was gluten free. I use Namaste GF pizza crust you buy in a box when I cook at home and like that GF crust better. The pesto on it was tasty but the chef put too much pesto in the center so it made the crust soggy in the middle. The chicken had good flavor & was hot (temperature) and crisp when served and the maple syrup had a nice kick to it. The chive waffle was crisp on one side but the other side was doughy. The Kale and sweet potato hash had too much garlic and he said it was too bitter but that's what kale tastes like. I love garlic and liked the hash. He loved the chicken & waffles. He tried the local Finger Lakes wine. The white was good; the red not good enough so he left most of it. The restaurant gets crowded and has a loyal following so eat early if you don't want to wait long in between dishes. I thought the dishes were over priced for what we got. We had better meals in Poughkeepsie when visiting the FDR Library & Vanderbilt Mansion for far less money. Our waiter was good. We don't live in the area so we do not expect to be back. read more

I chose this place because I'm vegan and I noticed they had a vegan cheese plate which was absolutely incredible to see on a non-vegan restaurant menu. IT WAS DELICIOUS. I loved all the cheese selections of course and the pickled fennel was a delicious complement. I also had the veggie tamales, marinated olives and focaccia and oil. YUM, YUM, YUM!!! The vegetables were my favorite because they were sauteed and cooked to perfection. The shrimp was a great addition to my meal.
