This is my first time leaving a 1-star review, and I'm truly disappointed today. This restaurant ruined everything I had planned for celebrating my husband's birthday. It wasn't just the management--the food wasn't good either. If you're considering this place because of the 4.7 rating, don't bother. The only things this place has going for it are that it looks nice for photos and has a decent drinking atmosphere. The food, however, is not good. The cocktails were great, though. We ordered appetizers--there was uncleaned grit in the escargot. The best dish we had was the grilled octopus, but it was only "good" compared to the main courses. The French onion soup was average, nothing special. For the mains, the chef's choice was lamb chops, but no one asked us how we wanted them cooked. We also ordered the pork chop--it had no flavor, the meat wasn't tender, and it simply didn't taste good. We had no idea what we were even eating. All of the above might've been forgivable because the ambiance was okay. I had noted during the reservation that this was a birthday celebration. When we were seated, both the host and server said "happy birthday," so I thought they had it covered. But when it came time for dessert--the most important moment--I asked two female servers if they could add a "Happy Birthday" decoration to the dessert. Both said yes. I had seen photos online of birthday celebrations at this restaurant with candles and decorations, so I knew they were capable of it. But when the crème brûlée arrived, there was nothing on it. A male server brought it out, and I'm certain they never communicated with each other. This crucial, basic detail was completely overlooked. I've never had a birthday dinner go this wrong at any other restaurant. It was just... served, plain. So I ended up not being able to celebrate my husband's birthday properly--just awkwardly handed him a gift and ate dessert in silence. The crème brûlée wasn't even freshly torched--it was cold from the fridge. This was honestly such a disappointing day. I rarely write long Google reviews, but I hope no one else has to experience this. No one wants to deal with such an amateur mistake when celebrating someone's birthday or anniversary. And the food isn't cheap--our bill was $250 for two people. For that price, you can find far better food and service in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood. read more

First and last time! The whole experience felt rushed. Our dishes took over an hour to arrive, yet the waitress showed us the dessert menu before our main courses were even served. We were informed that some dessert takes 20 min to prepare. To make it worse, she asked if I still wanted to finish my meal (of course, I do want to finish my last slide of steak). At that point, we'd only had our main dishes for about 20 minutes, so it's not because we were eating slowly. Aside from the horrible service, brussel sprouts were burnt, the he steak was amazing but nothing more special than any other steakhouse. This is a fine dining restaurant that is located underground in a "cellar". The vibe is old time/traditional steak house, dimly lit with antique features and decor. The food was amazing with a very traditional take on all the dishes we ordered. My favorites were the steak tartare and the short rib, which was cooked so tender. The sides that came with it were also delicious. The potatoes were like a chunky version of mashed potatoes. Overall, the food was amazing but I will say the service wasn't 100% for a $600+ meal. Which is why one star is off. I had made a reservation for 5:30 PM for four for myself and my parents for my dad's birthday. My parents arrived at 5:20 and we were told that they could not be seated because me and my fiancé had not arrived yet (even though the entire place was empty) and my parents had to stand or sit on a fireplace edge. My mom went to try to sit in a chair off to the side, but was told she could not sit there and could stand or sit on the fireplace edge. I feel like it's odd to not see people when it's the time for the reservation and it's only a reservation for four when your entire restaurant is empty .... It also took an incredibly long time to get our steak tartare appetizer because it was actually given to the table next to us by mistake. I've been here a couple times and it's typically been a good experience, but this last time I came was awful. For starters I wanted some fun cocktails so I could make this fun review. And our server Heather H. was rude when it came to answering my questions just trying to find the cocktails with the fun cups. The bone marrow was good. I was very disappointed with the French onion soup. It was so salty And truly had hardly any onions in it literally was only able to take a couple bites of it. It was that salty. I ordered the filet mignon and you're supposed to get vegetables with it. I got four little pieces of zucchini. But all the other yelp reviews got green beans or carrots. They actually got vegetables. I got four small pieces of zucchini. And because our server was rude, I decided not to address this. This was supposed to be a fun dinner and I literally couldn't wait to get out completely disappointed will not be going back. But the ambience of this restaurant is super cool. It's underground. Old world dining in the Cellar was a tremendous way to start our holiday party evening. Gorgeous downstairs restaurant in an attractively decorated room with impeccable service. Imaginative cocktail menu and extensive whisky list led to my smoked old fashion with Whistle Pig whisky. A knowledgeable wine steward poured red and white wine and Champagne. We sampled the charcuterie platter, fresh bread, asparagus topped with a fried egg and steak tartare. Their French onion soup was fabulous. This is my second visit ... celebrating a birthday event tonight. The first time I came to this restaurant was over 7 years ago ( lol) I am not sure what happened maybe the chef changed? But the food tonight was a bit disappointing. It was a mixed feeling throughout the night. At first I thought it was my taste buds but all I could taste was salt. We had a party of 6 people and everybody was complaining they couldn't taste actual flavor of the food. Everything was heavily seasoned with salt. The lobster bisque had a really salty aftertaste, huge chunks of salt in the New York steak, side of mushrooms) and the dessert (chocolate soufflé) was a bit too sweet . The experience was just odd and I really didn't expect it to be like this after returning again. The drinks were good. I wouldn't recommend getting food here but drinks to end the night would be great. It's a romantic setting perfect for date night. However not sure if I will be returning in the future. I joined my friend for dinner and drinks at The Cellar, which is his favorite go-to spot. I could totally see why he loves the place so much. Everything about my experience was fantastic. Outstanding food and drinks, amazing bar and wait staff, and the coziness and intimacy of the restaurant's ambiance. I had the pleasure of meeting Troy and Dustin, who were the bartenders for the night. They were friendly and highly talented in their craft. I learned that each of the bartenders contributed to their seasonal menu, and I enjoyed everything I tried. I had the Frostbite (refreshing gin-based cocktail), Ice Age (tasted like a cinnamon toast crunch with whiskey), and "The Cuff" (surprise concoction of the day). I also put them to the test of whipping up a drink based on my likes - gin, fruity, bitter, and creamy (i.e. egg white) - and was blown away by how delicious and unique the drink was. Shannon was our server for the night when we moved over to our table, and she was on point. Attentive, personable, and knowledgeable of the menu. I appreciated her recommendations, and she did not disappoint. She even set expectations on how long food takes to be made (i.e. baked desserts) in order to encourage us to order in advance. My friend and I ordered several things to share including the French Onion Soup, Escargot, Veal dish, and side of Lobster Mac. Their French Onion Soup was on par to French Onion Soup I've had in Paris, but what makes The Cellar's special is their added filet mignon bits. Their Escargot appetizer was surprisingly different as well too. I was expecting to see 6-8 Escargots drenched in a garlic butter sauce, but their dish is a puff pastry in a savory broth with Escargot. I loved how this dish was reimagined, and it was so tasty. The veal medallions were tender and were over a bed of cooked broccolini and mashed carrots. Whole thing was drizzled with a sweet glaze. The lobster mac was a bit on the salty side and could've used more lobster pieces, but it was still solid. I liked that they used gemelli, which I hardly see being used in pasta, so that was a nice change. Gemelli was perfectly al dente. read more

If you're looking for a great cocktail go sit in the bar area for a delightful treat. It's pretty busy often so I recommend coming on a weeknight instead of a weekend. The bar area does serve food so you can get the lobster bisque, Mac n cheese, charcuterie board and small bites. For drinks the seasonal menu is always great but order "off the cuff" for a surprise! We recently had dinner here for our anniversary and it was delicious with great service. It's pretty pricey so definitely good for special occasions. read more

Overall it was a good experience. However, we found it to be overpriced and overrated. It is a unique place in that the decor was different. The service was very good, but not the excellent service we expected for the prices they charge. The food was good, but not worth the almost $300 we paid for two. We had one cocktail each (avoid the martini), one small glass of red wine each (mediocre selection), the Chateaubriand for two, two slices each (good, but slightly overcooked), lobster bisque - split, very small cup each (excellent) and Cesar salad - split, small portion (very basic, nothing special). Our experience should not have cost more than $200 with tip. We've had better food and service for much less. I hovered between 3 and 4 stars; I'd have put 3 1/2 if it were an option. We'd been here 20 years ago, and even then the consensus was that it had been surviving on its reputation. I think it's still kicking because, frankly, northern O.C. is a bit of a fine dining desert. We wanted something special for Valentine's Day--dark, quiet, and romantic, and with celebratory dishes, not the glorified pub food a lot of places here offer. The Cellar delivered, but at the level we expected, that is to say good but not great. Atmosphere was perfect--we had a very private booth in a corridor lined with wine storage. Our server was pleasant and the service speedy and correct (except for putting a used knife back on the tablecloth when taking away a finished dish). We did the Prix Fixe menu for the occasion. Our dishes in order: Potato Croquettes: a bit too runny inside and sort of ordinary Tomato & crème fraiche tartine: very tasty but a bit too sweet for an app, more like dessert Asparagus Bisque: a winner! Where do you get that bacon? Black Kale salad: greens nicely tender but the coconut dressing was just weird Filet Mignon and Lamb Wellington: both meats were less tender than we expected, doubt they are buying choice instead of prime cuts, but tasted that way Vanilla soufflé: tasty enough, but nothing to distinguish it Chocolate Cake: the black peppercorn sauce was very interesting, cake unctuous, but the plain sliced strawbs on top need some attention--a bit of glaze perhaps, or at least a quick dunk in sugar syrup as they were not naturally very sweet Wrote this in solidarity with the few here who found fault; an awfully lot of rave reviews that we feel are undeserved. Perhaps an audience that has not much to compare it to? We're not snobs, but do appreciate the best on occasion so hoped for a bit more. Phenomenal restaurant for a special occasion. Their cocktails are handcrafted, seasonal and on the strongside. For the first round we opted for their Mai tai made with aged rum. It's $45 but pretty amazing! The lobster bisque is truly the best soup I've ever had. For the main entree the wife and I shared their Chateaubrand (20 oz. Filet Mignon, cut and served table side) and it was also the best filet I've ever had. We finished off our meal with an old fashioned and a large vanilla soufflés with grand marnier. Our soufflé was slightly over cooked however I won't hold it against them as I've had it before here and it was perfect (accidents happen). Last but not least our server Jocelyn provided excellent service and we appreciated her attentiveness and suggestions. Went to this place over a decade later and the ambiance, service, and food was still top notch! We ended there on a Friday evening with no reservation but host was helpful enough to find a spot at the bar. I started with Blue Velvet - a Tequila drink with lavender. A great drink and not too strong. It was well balanced and if you like lavender, this drink is highly recommended. For appetizer we had: Beef Tartare: Absolutely amazing! Meat was tender, low on fat, and it was full of flavor. Very unique (I would say in French way) and nothing like new American Cuisine are doing it. Highly recommend if you like taste of meat itself. Bone Marrow: Ah the sauce on top of marrow! Right amount of marrow and full of flavors. Great dish! For main course we had: Maple Leaf Duck: I love duck and all its flavor. The combination of celery root puree, raisins, caulilini, onions, and shiitake - simply wow! Chef got this dish to its perfection. For duck lovers, this dish is A MUST! Nordic Blue Salmon: Salmon was cooked perfectly with medium texture in center and crispy skin. Seafood Veloute, Mirepoix, and veggies made it so well balanced and super light! I would recommend this dish! 10oz Cape Grimm Filet Mignon: If I know correctly Cape Grimm is straight from Australia. Meat was super tender and delicious as it was in beef tartare. Very impressive with the tenderness in center compare to how thick the piece was. Garlic mashed potatoes were straight to the point! Great dish. We were impressed with our experience at the Cellar and enjoyed our time very much. Service was outstanding. The servers are trained very well to maximize your experience. The atmosphere is romantic with dim lighting, dark leather and wood. It's a classy place. Despite what they say on their website, no one was turned away for wearing shorts and not wearing a jacket. Food was impressive and very well executed. I had the French onion soup. It was probably the tastiest that I've had even in France or Germany. There were chunks of filet mignon in the soup that gave it a richer flavor than what I've experienced before. I agreed with our excellent server, Gwyneth, that why settle for the original onion soup when you can get all the extra flavor? My wife had the tuna tartare. She was disappointed that the tuna had bits of skin and membrane that made it tough to chew. Perhaps we were expecting an experience like the poke that we had in Honolulu recently. On the other hand, she really enjoyed her salmon dish. It was a good sized portion perfectly cooked and served with an excellent sauce. Presentation was very good. Since my wife can't handle beef, I was delighted that I could order a 10 oz filet mignon which was about half of the chateaubriand. I'd missed the chateaubriands that we ate as a young couple in Germany and France. It was difficult to find restaurants that did this dish well. In those days in Europe the filet was strongly supported by a palette of wonderful cooked fresh vegetables. Here in the US the chateau is primarily the beef with the few veggies as kind of an afterthought. At the Cellar, the accompanying asparagus was done perfectly, but that was about it for veggies. I noticed another couple who were probably sharing a chateau and were served with asparagus and some carrots. I'm not complaining. I just have to set aside my expectations form Europe many years ago. Even the vegetarian said that even though there aren't a lot of vegetarian entree options, they still like coming here because the service is amazing every time and you feel special. The presentation was good; I like how they counted in French and uncovered the entrées at the same time. Sole Bolle - sparkling water, $7.50 Beach Bonfire - interesting cocktail: sweet, smoky, and the presentation was cool (when the rubber(?) cover was removed, it was smoky) Bai Tai - sweet, really good. Highly recommend. We got The Odyssey, but we didn't like it (tasted basic/not special to me, and another person didn't like mezcal). Rouge Ballet - also good, but I liked Bai Tai more Lobster Bisque - creamy, a solid bisque. Not a huge portion. Braised Lamb Shank - wow. Huge portion, meat was soft. I enjoyed the heirloom pearl onions, cheese slabs, and pomegranate reduction. Venison rack - this was the server's recommendation and favorite. I tried a bit, and it was really good, though I liked my lamb more. The meat was nicely medium rare, but the parts I tried were too tough for me. Truffle Macaroni & Cheese - amazing. They do the truffle flavor right. Roasted Eggplant - a solid dish. I liked the cheese. Sautéed Mushroom Medley - soft mushrooms made me keep coming back for more. Asparagus Milanese - wow, the asparagus were done so well. Soft but still crunchy, the sauce was so good. I liked the shaved parmesan. Charcuterie/Cheese Board - my favorite cheese was the drunken goat, and I liked the fig jam. It also came with paté, brie, and blue cheese. Small Chocolate Soufflé with Grand Marnier Anglaise, Small Vanilla Soufflé with Seasonal (blueberry) Anglaise (both types of Anglaise were $2.00) - so good. Beautiful ambience and the service was great. Our server was knowledgeable and checked in accordingly. Escargot was a 9/10 it had good flavor. Lobster bisque was a 10/10 very delicious with very good flavor we had ours split hence the smaller portion. The bread that was complimentary was subpar has well with the resort butter they serve. The Caesar salad 4/10 was a miss for me had onions and corn bits not enough dressing in my opinion. For dinner the steak was nice 7.5/10 they didn't have ribeye which is what I prefer though online it says the 18oz steak was a ribeye. We did chose the location specifically because they had ribeye listed. The risotto was a chefs special and was good the texture was a new concept for me so I don't end up finishing the plate it was thick and creamy. The mash potatoes were your average mash potatoes!! We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday on a Saturday night. We parked at the parking structure across the street for free. It is very easy to make reservations on open table, if you fail to make it to the reservations, the restaurant will charge you $40 per person. I was not aware the cellar was designed in the 60s by someone that created the pirates of the Caribbean. And so many people mentioned the place is hard to find, it got me nervous that we wouldn't make it to the restaurant on time. After walking by somisomi, you will walk through a gate into a plaza, and the restaurant is located at the end of the hallway to the right. There is a very dark staircase going down into a very dark place. The vibe is very unique with the whole restaurant built underneath in the basement. Watch your steps! Not sure if it's just me, but the place smells a little like dampness or urine..... Salty food alert We ordered bunch of food to try. Cocktail: 5 stars He ordered the odyssey, he mentioned one of the best cocktail. Not overly sweet bur great flavors. Appetizers : Escargot with mushrooms and puff pastry - 2 stars I got so excited for the escargot and puff pastry combo!!! However, I have tried Escargot multiple places, this is the first place Escargot failed me. There is no butter or garlic flavors but salt, a lot of salt. It is too salty to eat. Thank God, the server brought some warm bread, dipping with bread and butter, we managed to ignore the saltiness. Lobster bisque - 4 stars Very very tasty Lobster bisque with small chunks of Lobster. Order one bowl to split for sharing is a must, it feels quite rich and salty at the end. Main course: Salmon with black rice : 2 stars The salmon is something that I can easily make at home, rice is tasty but it gets very salty at the end. Lamb shank: 2 stars The lamb meat is cooked long enough to fall off the bones. However, very salty flavors and kinda gamey. We started to doubt ourselves at this point.... Is our taste broken or this chef very heavy on the salt?? Brussel Sprouts : 2 stars The type of Brussels Sprout easily to make at home with honey, nothing special. But it helped us to balance the rest of the food since they are sooooooo salty. Also 6 glasses of water really help. Chocolate souffle with caramel sauce: 4 stars It is hot and fresh and very tasty, bit lack of chocolate flavors like any other comments mentioned. Service : 6 stars Best service we have for a long time dining in OC. The server truly takes care of his table, he is knowledgeable about the restaurant and the menu. He refilled water frequently and cleaned the table often. And he brought us on the house creme Brulee, that was really tasty. Every server in the restaurant carries very high standards, that's very admirable. Vibes: 4 stars If you can disregard the weird smells and no cellphone reception, this restaurant has a unique dark vibe and we had such a good time with great conversation. And I noticed all the other tables were also having really great conversations without the distraction of a cell phone. It was definitely a very special experience even though the food is not great. Overall, spending over $200 for very salty not so great food just makes it hard for us to come back. (...I'm not salty about it at all...) I would love to see this restaurant keep going for another 50 years, but with all these reviews mentioning overly salty food. Please gather the staff and try the food yourself. No matter how nice of ingredients or dish preparation, overly salty food kills all the flavors. Took the sis here for her birthday over the weekend. Very cool location and great ambiance inside. Started our meal off with lobster bisque and it was chef's kiss-good. A little on the saltier side but overall nice & creamy. Sis got the escargot and she did not like it- it wasn't prepared the way she is used to eating it but our server explained that this was a house's spin on a classic. For the mains- my sister ordered the 40 day dry aged pork loin. She thought the meat was cooked perfectly but aside from that, the dish itself lacks flavor and something special. It was paired with cubed caramelized apples and duck fat potatoes which she felt was a little too oily for her liking. For $55 it was definitely not a homerun in terms of price for taste. I got the scallop gnocchi. 3 fat pieces of scallops paired with a creamy sauce and gnocchi's. It was mild in flavor and overall okay-good. It wasn't bad but it wasn't something I'd come back for. We also got a side of sauteed mushrooms which was a regrettable decision because it was just so salty. I think sodium is a little heavy handed here so I would caution that if your diet is more salt-conscious, you may need to request for them to be light with the shakers. Service was impeccable. Our server was so friendly, knowledgeable and super accommodating. The price is high but the flavors are not matching up to that so I doubt I would come back. read more

Wonderful Filet Mignon. Great atmosphere and kind waitstaff. Good sequence of service.

What great service from start to finish! First off, it may be a little tricky to find if you aren't familiar with the area. If you're entering by Wilshire you'll just go into the white building and keep going straight until you see the sign right above and the stairs are just to the right. Throughout the restaurant it's dimly lit and the more on the quiet side. Now the service was just amazing. We were greeted by the hostess who was very friendly. Our server was Heather and she was great! Explained everything thoroughly and always keep our water glasses full and checked in on us at all times. Service can make or break an experience and she definitely added to our dinner experience. The best part....the food! We got the bone marrow which had such great flavor. We also got the lobster bisque. It was very flavorful and had chunks of lobster in it. Fun fact: they haven't changed their recipe for the bisque in 20 years! Our main course was the shareable filet mignon. It was cooked perfectly and had great flavor! The sauces they paired with it added more flavor. This is a big portion so I'd bring a empty stomach so you can finish your meal. I'll be sure to come back again! Such a great place! read more
