I was passing through town and stopped by here because it was late and one of the few places that was open late (open 24 hours). The service was good at first but our waitress stopped coming after we got our food. The atmosphere was nice and it was pretty quiet on Monday night. I ordered the "Celtic Breakfast" with scrambled eggs, ham, potatoes, and wheat toast for C$18. It wasn't bad. I give it three stars because it was good but not anything exceptional. read more

Came a long way to try some Newfoundland pub fare . . . First meal, I ordered cod tongues as an appetizer to share ($11.00). They came lightly battered, with a small pot of sliced green pickles. Ummm, sort of fishy tasting, some more gelatinous than others. Pickle helped. Nah, they can keep this on the Rock. For the main I ordered the Jiggs dinner pie: local cabbage, turnip, carrots, potatoes, peas pudding, salt beef and savoury dressing in a gravy, baked under a puff pastry with two golf-ball sized potato croquettes ($14.75). A local in the group said it was not how Jiggs dinner would traditionally be served. Oh well, I actually liked it; reminded me of leftover pot roast, gravy and veggies stirred together, and reheated. Comfort food on a Monday night. The croquettes were nicely crisp fried, but the potato centre could use more seasoning, and butter or something so they are less dry. A couple days later, I ordered the lobster Mac and Cheese ($19.75) for dinner. It came with a slice of garlic toast. The rich cheese-cream sauce and pasta was well done, but quite a small portion. What was most deficient was the lobster. Not much lobster for the price - had to keep searching for tiny pieces. As a comparison, Nautical Nelly's in Victoria, BC serves twice as much pasta baked in the dish last winter with noticeable chunks of lobster for about the same price, although the lobster was briny. Still looking for the perfect lobster Mac and Cheese outside my kitchen . . . . Others in the group over two nights enjoyed a variety of entrees, and most were a hit. The couple misses were the lobster (too small for the price and considering we are on the Atlantic coast) and the A Taste of Asia Salad (taste and freshness at issue). Cider expensive here - $7.04 for a Strongbow. Good and friendly service. read more

I order my meals on Door Dash and never saw Celtic Hearth before so I decided to give it a try. Boy, I am glad I did! The bacon and spinach dish is just delicious. I also tried the taquitoes, seafood chowder, steak and fries, club sandwich...that what I can remember now. All freaking delicious ...delicious. No trouble when you call and ask for something else to add and friendly service. The two guys Rodney and Cody are absolute gentlemen. You will not be disappointed if you order from there guys. No matter what time of day, evening, night or morning you can always expect great service and a hot meal. The late night menu has a great selection, however I'm always a little sad to see my favorite side option not available. With that being said, always a great excuse to go back earlier in the evening. read more

Went here with a few friends, it was my first time here and I was pleased with the decor and the staff we encountered were very nice. We ordered drinks and got them very quick but once we ordered food we waited 1hr 45mins before we got our orders. Our waitress gave us free refills (which is the norm at most places) for our long wait. The food was good but some of our dishes that were quick to make were left in a/on a "warm area" while the other dishes were being prepared, instead of waiting to make the easier dishes. The music that was playing was very nice, we had a lot of fun with it. Some of the staff did get a bit loud while laughing with some customers which caused us to have to speak louder. Had a lot of fun though, mainly because of my awesome friend selection, but I will return. read more

This place has a typical English pub atmosphere and like everywhere in St. John's, friendly and charming staff. Their prime rib dinner special on a Friday night, however, was pretty much inedible. Half of what was on the plate had to be discarded it was too fatty even to give to the dog. The meat that remained was tough and stringy. I'm sure it's a great place to have a beer, but would never consider returning there to eat. read more

We visited St John's via cruise ship in August and decided to walk the town. After hours of walking we ended up in front of the Celtic Hearth where customers in a booth told us to come in as it's a great place to eat. We listened and came on in and were not disappointed. The staff was super friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was great! We had our first shot of Screech and after a few more wanted to purchase a bottle but stores were closed due to Sunday. An employee went out on break and went to a store they knew and got us and another group a bottle. We paid for the bottle but wanted to give extra for their trouble which he replied no. What a lovely person as well as the other staff. We are looking forward to going back to St John in the future and will definitely go back to the Celtic Hearth. read more

Worst Service I have EVER gotten. I returned to this place not by choice, dragged by friends who wanted to go TWICE after my first bad experience and it just got worse. The first return me and my 2 friends were the only ones there and the guy at the bar payed no attention to us, we waited forever. and when we got our stupid food he didn't come back to check on us, despite me slurping my empty water loud enough for him to hear and whisteling for him to come over. The second time the place was PACKED and I actually got in a fight with the people I came with for bringing me there, as we watched the server seat his friends before us when we had been waiting 20 mins and they just walked in. I will never go there again. I would NEVER recommend the place. read more

I arrived with my wife on Sunday morning a bit after 11:00. Irish/Newfoundland music was playing (which I like) but too loud to be able to converse across a table. While looking for a quieter table, the waiter said he would turn down the music. He was polite and friendly. We asked for tea while we looked through the menu. It arrived quickly in pots so we let it steep for 3-4 minutes. My wife poured some and said it is not hot. I stuck my finger in my pot and found I could leave it in there without burning. We flagged down the waiter and asked for hot tea. He boiled a kettle and brought us more tea. I ordered toutans. The dish comes with a slice of bologna, so I asked if they would sub blood pudding...no, they would not. I asked for my eggs fried hard...nothing runny. When the dish arrived, it came with a small container of molasses. The container is like those little cups I see pills being brought to patients in hospitals. I had two toutans, but the molasses barely covered the bottom of the little cup. I squeezed it onto the top of one toutan but it was sparse...I ate one mostly dry toutan. It took a while to flag the waiter down again. When I did, he brought me another cup, this one filled. In the meantime, I cut into my eggs to find both of them were runny. I flag the waiter down again and in a few minutes he brought be two eggs on a pan. They were not cooked as much as I like them but there were not runny so I guess I got what I asked for. When finished, I went to the cash by the door and waited. After a few minutes, the waiter arrived and directed me to another cash in the buffet area. While paying, I commented that it was getting busy. He replied that it is not as busy as usual. Bottom lime, the place is nice and the waiter is friendly. Wow! Talk about some educated characters at this place. I'm from the US and have been fully vaccinated for months with the single shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine. I've been engaged to a Newfoundlander for over two years now and haven't been to NL since before covid this is my first time back. After a night of unmasked partying at the local NL watering holes we decided to close our night at Celtic hearth like we normally do with another couple. Hold that thought the fully educated and brilliant staff at Celtic hearth decide the JnJ vaccine is not approved by the Canadian provincial government as they frequently repeat to sound intelligent multiple times. How did I get in the country you buffoons. I've been fully vaccinated and you acting an ass isn't saving anyone. I'm not even kidding the doorman was so offended he wanted to fight me when I argued about my vaccine legitimacy. This guy got so offended his eyebrow was twitching. He's truly lucky my fiancé was there or I probably would've shown that eyebrow the wood floor. I will never come to Celtic ever again. read more

Went late at night as I wanted to have a restaurant experience and not much else was open. After coming here many times getting lobster etc... I was very disappointed. We were sat by Tue wait staff and waited 30 main for drinks....they never came nor did menus.... 1 hour very frustrated at this point....went up looked around was seen and went and sat down...2 hours .....never got served in 2 hours. I can tell you I'm very patient...but this is too much I walked out and heard " sorry" on the way out. Never again read more

Ordered the apple and blue cheese salad with a French onion soup. Food was subpar, however the service was good and beer was outstanding. They were out of apples for the salad so strawberries were substituted, which may or may not have been a mistake. The soup had too much bread for my liking. Broth and cheese tasted good, but the texture put me off. Best time to come here is after the bars/pubs and order something greasy, it's the Hearth's wheelhouse and as long as you can get a table, they seem to knock it out of the park every time I've come here with a jag on. read more

We came to Celtic hearth during the week of the George Street festival. This is an incredibly busy time for downtown restaurants. Our server Chico was very welcoming and gave us good suggestions for exploring NFLD. I had the homemade turkey soup and potato bread. It was loaded with turkey and veggies and the broth was great! Went here for supper this past Saturday, had a poutine called "the big dirty". Funny and delicious. Large portions here for a great price. The service was adequate, however not sure how it would have been had there been more people there. Nonetheless an excellent meal and enjoyable time. read more

I've had good food here on one occasion. Nothing amazing. The last time I was here they definitely didn't have enough staff and we were completely forgotten about in the back. Waited over an hour for two dishes before we left. The menu was pretty bland anyway though and overly pricey. read more

Worst place I've eaten in the whole of Canada. There was no meet and greet had to find my own table then call waitress. The had only one menu which we had to share, there was no prices on any drinks on the menu, ordered a glass of Merlot and a Stella beer. Beer was flat and wine was cheap and tasted like vinegar. Had ordered chicken wings to share for starter when it came 30 mins later it had no sauce. Meanwhile we notice about 20 people turned away as the staff were saying there's a hour wait for food. We called the floor manager to see where our mains were 1 hr 15 mins since we had arrived, we did convey our disappointment in the service but she just smiled as if she couldn't have cared less, and said there was one kitchen and 2 restaurant s working from it,. We paid bill in full as no discount was even offered. The management/owners need to review the staffing front of house and kitchen. I wouldn't give this place any star read more

I'm not fussy, but my meal was cold and I had to ask them to heat it up. My wife had a burger advertised as being voted "best in town" and it was terrible. We came here after flying all day and half the evening from the West Coast. We were tired and it was midnight, so we ordered a couple of simple things--a chicken quesadilla and a bowl of seafood chowder. Then we sat and waited and waited and waited some more. At 1 a.m. I asked the server how long it takes to make a quesadilla and ladle up a bowl of soup. He said there were tables in front of us (there were only about 10 people in the bar and restaurant and more hadn't come in since we'd arrived). When I said, forget it, I was leaving, he said, "Oh you're next." Another 15 minutes passed and finally our food came, but my soup was lukewarm and I sent it back for rewarming. My soup NEVER came back! I shared my friend's very average quesadilla. When we went to pay, I refused to pay for the soup and they charged my friend an extra $4 for a small salad that they'd said was one of the included sides (the quesadilla was $17, not cheap). We paid and, for the first time ever, I didn't tip. I would not return to this restaurant ever. Poor service, terribly slow kitchen, average food. read more

No complaints. Food was good. Dan had 2 piece fish and chips and I had jiggs dinner with croquettes. Mine could have been hotter temperature wise and the croquettes needed a dash of hot sauce. We arrived about 8PM without reservations. Were told it would be about 20 minutes. After about 15 minutes we were offered a table in the bar area. About 8:30 they took our order. They were out of ribs which were the Saturday night special. We ordered gin & tonic and were told after getting the drinks they were out of tonic we so these were the last gin & tonics. By 9:15 we had not received our food and no one had been by to check on us or to update us on the food. I finally asked a server if they could check. No one came back to update us, but we did get food about 9:30. A pasta dish which was seafood fettuccine had penne pasta, but at that point we didn't bother to say anything. When we asked about desserts, they were out of all but one. For a place which serves food 24 hrs a day, they appeared to be very poorly supplied and they also appeared to be very disorganized.
