I hadn't been to The Chalkboard in years and thought it would be great to see how it had held up, unfortunately I'm sad to say it was disappointing. The service was okay but the food was not good. We had the cheese board which was very underwhelming. For our entrees we had the filet with mixed veggies and mashed potatoes. The best part was the mashed potatoes. Seriously the steak was very overdone, the mixed veggies were hard and undercooked. My husband had the short rib and it was okay at best. We were out with another couple so we thought we would try dessert to see if maybe there was a redeeming for the food and continue to enjoy the company sadly we tried the bread pudding it was the best thing but still not worth the money. In the end we spent $200 and it was truly the worst food we've had out in a long time. I hate writing this as I love supporting the local restaurants but this is a lot to pay for food as bad as we received. Lastly, the ambiance was also odd at times. The music accidentally got hit up which was strange but a lady came out a few minutes later and shouted sorry to everyone which made it more akward. read more

It's been a few years since my husband, daughter and I ate here, but it was most memorable and accommodating for Gluten Free diners as well. The charcuterie platter has to be the best we have sampled around town, generous and varied. Also I remember having the beef short rib dinner which was served with grits to make it gluten free. That is the best thing I remember having in a restaurant, my husband got the chicken and pretty sure my daughter had a steak, both were wonderful. Finished off with creme brûlée. I just don't think you could go wrong here, it's just so cozy and the service was great. read more

I didn't know Ayhan Ozaras and Tammy were no longer at the Chalkboard. I quit going there after a very expensive catered reception was a total ripoff. The $750 fruit display consisted of lot's of orange slices and not much else. Crabcakes (also expensive) didn't seem to contain crab. The guest laughed and were calling them "crumbcakes". Every buffet item seemed to scream "REDUCE THE FOOD COSTS" with a distinctive accent. I later learned the tip for the excellent servers was not received in full. Seeing The Chalkboard is still in the same family I'm skeptical. I don't know if the kid are doing better. That's why I gave three stars instead of the one star my reception deserved. read more

The Chalkboard is the in-house restaurant of Tulsa's Ambassador Hotel. It also is a favorite of locals to have a nice meal without braving the crowds of trendy neighborhoods like Brookside. While not particularly fancy the prices are on the higher side, not surprising for a hotel restaurant. On this particular visit we did not eat so this will be more about the general atmosphere. Warning to first-time visitors. If you enter from the hotel lobby there is no maître d' station to greet you. In fact you will just be stared at by the people working in the kitchen. The layout is set up for people entering from the street entrance. Only thing is, they don't tell you that. The décor is neither trendy, fancy nor plush. But yet not plain either. It's dark and cozy and warm and has an ambience of a New York City club. I think it would be an awesome place to be on a cold, rainy day. We had Mimosas and watched TV in the bar, which is part of the restaurant. Whoever runs the place seemed to be in charge and spent a lot of time talking to vendors and working at his laptop. I felt we were adequately looked after. The Mimosa he made was mostly champagne, however when we ordered a second one the other waiter was much more stingy and went exactly half-and-half. Who goes stingy on Mimosas? But they were only $4 each, which is very low by most restaurants' standards. The Chalkboard seems to be a good place to meet a friend, have a casual business meeting, relax at the bar, etc. It wouldn't be my first choice for a romantic evening or to take someone to impress them. Overall, it's worth a visit if for nothing else its location. read more

Went for restaurant week and then returned with guests the next night. They understood the concept and had 4 nice choices for entrees. No skimping because it was reduced price for the special-- they are smart enough to showcase the skills and they have gained at least 4 new customers. Nice refined but relaxed atmosphere and great service both nights. Had a mini beef Wellington appetizers that was perfectly prepared and full of flavor. This not a common menu item but they had it as an appetizer and on the special menu!! Style points We had a beautiful short ribs over polenta/a perfectly cooked sea bass over fresh mashed potatoes with an elegant sauce of cream, lemon and capers/ Kung paw beef and broccoli/ and possibly the star entree was vegetarian--a spicy cauliflower that I am anxious to try again Strawberry shortcake did not fully describe the dish. Small cubes of moist, rich cake with ripe berries and a swirl of strawberry juice( not sauce). Again small touches that make a difference They only low point was wine choices by the glass. Only lesser qualities choices and the stemware was not paired well. Got the best Chardonnay they had and it came in a thick rim standard small wine glass. It was ice cold and I see this too often. Sav blac and other whites can be chilled but a nice Chardonnay should be closer to room temp than chilled Great place and will return read more

The food was excellent. I would recommend the braised ribs. They were so tender, they did not need a knife. The portions were good sized and you won't walk away hungry. My first night in Tulsa and I tried this incredible find at my hotel. Wow just wow. Food and ambiance were both great but what set it apart was our server Kevin. He recommended the beef Wellington (and mushroom version for my girlfriend) and both were incredible. Mallory was our server and I cannot imagine a better person to guide us through the menu. When asked for suggestions, she took the time to find out what flavors we enjoyed, then made spot-on recommendations for both food and wine/cocktails. She was attentive without being intrusive. And the food could not possibly have been better. We had the strip and filet, both of which were prepared to perfect temp. Plus our appetizers & salads were yummy. Ambiance was very enjoyable. The Stuffed French Toast was sweet. A good sweet. With their green apples & mascarpone, it made it worth its sweet wild. I had to choose between smoked bacon & sage pork sausage, but I went with both. Both were good as well. Their mimosas were good as well. The glass was mostly filled with champagne (of course) but you couldn't taste it, that's how I like my drinks. The bartenders & waitress were attentive with the service. Hosted a work breakfast there today that was scheduled the day prior. Arrived to learn our group had been moved to a meeting room in another part of the hotel due to planned demolition in the restaurant. Service was adequate but the food was subpar. The food was cold, and my toast was so burnt that I needed a knife to cut it. My advice is to save money (Chalkboard isn't cheap) and go elsewhere. read more

I ordered the avacado bowl and my fiancé got the frimage. Both were delicious. My avacado bowl tasted like it had garden tomatoes and fresh ingredients but unfortunately was more salad than avacado or quinoa. I ordered a fruit cup which was very small. The salad with some avacado on it was $14 and my tiny fruit cup was $5. Between the two of us, with no alcohol, we spent $50. That's ridiculous and why I will not give the chalkboard 5 stars. The staff was nice and the food good but either the portions need to increase (don't recommend, we have an obesity epidemic) or the prices need to come down. read more

My fiancé and I stayed at the Hotel connected to The Chalkboard! We enjoyed the ambience and food was very good. We didn't have the highest expectations due to it being connected to a hotel, but we were "wowed!" Kelsey was our server and we ate the Bar. She was on point and recommended her favorite dishes. She did not disappoint... but everything on the menu looked wonderful! I forgot to mention, this was for breakfast. We will most definitely come back to the hotel and The Chalkboard! We enjoyed sitting in the bar area, however any place in the restaurant is nice and cozy. It's someone underground, so it makes it fun and romantic/cozy. AMAZING! We ordered three appetizers/small plates to share along with the soup du jour, and we were happy campers. 1. Cheese plate with three cheeses, came with a sliced cured sausage and accompanied by some amazing pickled veggies that included baby brussels and crunchy haricot vert. My dining companion loved the honey that came with it and the spiced cashews were a great touch. Generous amount of ginormous sweet tart blackberries provided a freshness to this cheeseboard. 2. The flatbread tonight was schmeared with pesto, topped with mozzarella and on top of each of the cut triangles of flatbread, was a generous sized piece of eggplant that was crunchily crusted that it tasted like meat. This is vegetarian I could embrace daily. The flatbread came with a side salad that was a perfect accompaniment. 3. Brussels and roasted sweet potatoes paired with pork belly lardons. Delicious. 4. Soup of the day was an artichoke with chicken. It was creamy and rich but light at the same time, with an acidity that played well into the flavor profile. Generous chunks of chicken provided a bite that went really well with the chopped up artichoke hearts. Oh and we had dessert too - a square of creme fraiche New York style cheesecake that was decadently rich yet with a hint of tartness that played off really well with the sweet blackberry coulis and fresh blackberries. And our server tonight was not only knowledgeable about the food but was attentive without being intrusive. A perfect dinner. read more

We have been coming here for many years and will not be back for a while. The new owners are going to have to step it up! We were never really sure who our waiter/waitress was. We had to ask if we needed something. Had to get up and walk toward the kitchen for drink refills. It took 40 minutes to get our food and was certainly not the quality that we were used too! I've eaten here several times in the last 9 months. The service, cocktails, and employees are wonderful, some of the food, not so much. I ordered room service for a blt minus the green tomato. The toast was so soggy I couldn't eat it, I threw away most of the sandwich and soggy fries which was a cost of $27.24 including a room delivery. I've tried a couple other things that I didn't care for. I've also had a couple dinners that were delicious. I will continue to eat here, as I always stay at the adjoining Ambassador Hotel. read more

The food was excellent. I had the turkey Reuben and pecan cranberry salad. My husband had the minestrone soup and pesto pasta. Both were absolutely amazing. The problem was the service. We were neglected the entire meal. We had to flag down a server to ask for water , it never came until the meal was complete after we had to ask again while they cleared our plates. . I had a cocktail and would have liked another at meal time. No one ever asked if I wanted another. It was not overly busy. The server was more interested in cleaning up other tables than serving ours. People were not waiting to be seated, she was just not interested in providing service. A gentlemen was seated next to us after our order was taken. He was finished eating before our meal even came. No idea why a problem. read more

I was staying in ambassador hotel so this guys are recommended by hotel for breakfast. They offer free breakfast if we choose what they offered. Else we need to pay for the differences. I went & chose other than they offered & service was good paid the difference. Next day chose only free choice , service & attitude of the service person is totally changed & took for a while to get. Toast was good except that nothing was good. I hate the way they talked when we went for the hotel offered free breakfast. I never go to this restaurant. read more

So little did I realize my timing was impeccable. The second day of The Chalkboard being open after renovations their moody yet classy ambiance set the scene for a lovely dining experience. I stopped by due to raving reviews and figured it would be a lovely place to have dinner during my work trip. The photos added show the lovely plating that gives merit to their name, The Chalkboard. The flavors of everything however I can't simply show through photographs. The mint yogurt sauce for the melt in your mouth lamb was the perfect compliment and had the perfect amount of kick of fresh garlic that's reminiscent of my middle eastern family roots. The lovely spiced honey went super well with the mustard and the practically any combination of items I ate on the charcuterie board complimented each other exceptionally well. Then there was dessert. The house made ice cream flavor of the day was pineapple ginger which sounded unorthodox but surprisingly went phenomenally together. In fact so well I forgot to photograph the dessert before it was gone! The ginger wasn't overpowering and enhanced the refreshing flavors the citrus that came from the pineapple. The service was absolutely outstanding and I had a lovely experience and will look forward to dining here again. The only complaint/critique I can think of providing us that I did not have a cheese knife for the charcuterie board. read more

Friendly and warm service lavished on us by Mallory and Ben--not to be outdone by Gee (Gerald), the GM, who promptly, assertively and ever-so kindly made all things right! The Chalkboard Kitchen + Bar is at the top of my list for must-visit restaurants in T-town. Renovation and rebranding have made this Tulsa mainstay for high occasions, a more approachable, yet excellent choice for a great weeknight dinner as well as a celebratory anniversary meal! Fantastic team they have! Austin was our waiter and he was so professional, extremely kind and super helpful! We also had the pleasure of meeting Tyler, the manager and he was such an inviting individual! Fantastic conversation, gave us the history of the restaurant and area. What a great meal! Beautifully presented and exquisitely prepared. Christoph (or was it Christian?) was a superb server. The only thing that tarnished the evening was the rude hostess. didn't get her name but she was short, blonde, bespectacled and quite pudgy. When I first called to make a reservation she was a bit snarky but said she could accommodate my small party of 3. When I gave her my (ethnic) surname she immediately told me she was wrong and had no other seat available besides the bar. I decided to go anyway because the yelp reviews and pictures looked so good. I arrived ahead of my party. I immediately knew this was the woman I had been speaking to over the phone by her voice and attitude. She looked at me as if I were dirt and asked suspiciously if I had a reservation. When I reminded her of our conversation she seated me...grudgingly. When the other 2 people in my party arrived I thought she was going to combust because she was forced to move us to a four top, even though the restaurant was considerably empty. At some point in the middle of our meal she stormed over and barked at one of the gentleman I was with, "Sir I'll need you to remove your coat from the seat so I can seat the table next to you!" (Although there was PLENTY of space on the banquet between him and the young lady being seated at the neighboring table). We all dropped our mouths, stunned at the way she spoke to him. She then quickly said, " I can hang it up for you if you'd like". (Why wouldn't she offer that to us before being seated)? Anyway, she was rude on the phone and rude and hostile in person. if I had to base this review on her service alone, it would be extremely low. Absolutely loved this restaurant. We arrived late at the ambassador hotel and the restaurant staff were kind enough to stick around so we could have a late dinner. The Chalkboard does not disappoint!!! We all had something different from the menu and sharing was not an option as we all thoroughly enjoyed our selections. I had the bruschetta and the beef Wellington. Bruschetta has a fantastic, unique flavor and the beef Wellington was cooked to perfection. The staff was super friendly and we had an absolutely fantastic experience. We will be back whenever we are in Tulsa. read more

I've been here several times now and the service is terrible. It's never a good sign when you have to go into the kitchen to get someone's attention so you can get a table that you reserved. Next ordered a drink and it 12 mins because apparently the bartender had to run "upstairs to get mint" for my drink. The restaurant is in the basement so not sure why it took so long to get up one floor. Food was ok. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday because it's one of the few places that serve Beef Wellington. We ordered the beef tartare to start, two wellingtons (rare), and I had this interesting variation of a creme brulee, and he had a chocolate dessert. The beef tartare was delicious and flavorful. The beef wellington was amazing and well-seasoned and it was just a perfect rare. My creme brulee dessert was just too thick and a bit sour, it felt like a keylime cheesecake almost. However, the service was very excellent and our waiter was attentive and helpful. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was the lack of personal space. It felt as if I was sitting elbow to elbow with other customers and you'd get a waiter's backside when they'd help the customers next to you. The best eating experience of my life!!! Chef Roque Heidler created an anniversary dinner that I will never forget. He made a buffet for my family and a 13 course vegetarian dinner for me. The artistry this chef showed in his creations went way above and beyond anything I have ever tasted or seen any chef create, even on tv. I usually am stuck eating salads, pretty vegetables or zucchini enchiladas. I never knew the things he did even existed. They were all his originals. Thank you soooo much Chef Roque. read more

My husband and I have been on one date night since my birthday...which was last August. So, in an effort to spend a couple hours together, he made a belated Valentine's Day reservation at The Chalkboard for a Friday night. Yay, Husband! We arrived right at 18:00, the time of our reservation, and there were three people at the bar and two tables occupied. No reservation needed after all, which was a tad surprising. Since I'm pregnant and could not partake of the wine (le sigh), no drinks for me. The menu was small, as it should be, and each dish sounded excellent. We started off with the hummus and the crab cakes. The hummus was good, but when you're married to an Arab man and you make your own hummus, you can be kind of snobbish about it. I gave it a solid 7 as it could have used more lemon. The crab cakes were divine and not overly breaded as some can be. We ended up splitting the bone-in pork chop ($4 dollar fee to split an entree) and it was so, so good. I'm vegan but my pregnancy is making me want all the meat so I happily oblige and go with it. I cannot tell you the last time I had pork. Maybe ten years ago? This chop was so juicy and full of flavor. My half was very fatty though so perhaps inquire about the cut before ordering. Splurging, we ordered the salted caramel creme brûlée. I would have much preferred the traditional version as this one was a tad too sweet and almost too rich to eat. Overall, service was not rushed and the food was great. I'd love to try brunch here as this dinner put me in the mood for more of what The Chalkboard has to offer. read more

Disappointing. You can tell that maybe this place used to be better once upon a time. But now, the food is sorely lacking. Maybe it is inconsistent, since from the other reviews, it looks like some people had an maxing experience, while others walked away to never return. Either way, inconsistency is bad for business. I gave it two tries, dinner and brunch, and they missed the mark both times. For dinner, we got the beef Wellington and the duck. Beef Wellington was disgusting, the pastry is supposed to be flaky, enveloping the meat. Nope. It was soggy and gross. The meat itself was supposed to be medium rare. It was more like well done. The duck was slightly better, but not by much. The experience just made our nice dinner extremely disappointing. The tab was not cheap, and considering how much we paid, we expected better. Go somewhere else and don't waste your money on a nice dinner here. So I thought, you know what, let's try again. Let's do brunch with some girlfriends since they wanted to try it. Brunch was overpriced for what we got. I really got something simple, eggs and bacon and potato. Tasted like something I could have paid a third of the price for the same quality. The other girls were not happy either. Needless to say, none of us has come back since. Just go to savor for brunch (more casual), or Roosevelt's, bramble or smoke. read more
