I came here for brunch this past Saturday and got: - The seasonal soup (Chicken tortilla): It was fine. Typical chicken tortilla soup - Chicken and waffles: Also fine. - Cheesecake: Had that weird fridge taste when you put something into the fridge for a long time uncovered Overall, I wasn't super impressed. I had expected a lot more, considering how this is one of those "famous"/timeless establishments of Tulsa. At other restaurants I've eaten at during Restaurant Week, it seems like we always full-sized portions. Here, they seemed kind of stingy with the food. We have been meaning to try this place for quite some time. We came for Sunday Brunch; made reservations two days in advance and showed up on time. We wore masks and waited at the bottom of the stairs. At least 4 servers came by and acknowledged us by saying someone would be right with us. 10 minutes later we were finally seated. We waited another 15 minutes before being given menus, while we waited we watched 4 servers run around; but not wait on any tables. There was one older waitress who handled everything. Almost all others took care of people they knew or "regular customers". They ignored those of us who were not Known. The food was good, but way overpriced. Food for two at over $100 with tip. The meal was a set price for the evening so we were good to go ! No surprises right !! Well that's when everything started un raveling , our server was overworked with too many tables to give proper attention and had no idea about any of the Wine selections featured so we went with a blind choice and it was terrible .. We tried again after waiting a very long time and missed again .. Christmas drinks were a miss !! Finally when dinner did arrive the presentation was like you would receive from a diner . . This restaurant is unbelievable. The kitchen teams' ability to masterfully execute simple dishes is astounding. We were in Tulsa for a few days and ate here three times in a row. It's that good. The details of the plates were simply amazing. From a perfectly dressed arugula salad lightly softening on top of a flawless frittata to a fried poached egg that added a creamy thickness to a sublime sauce and a nice crunch to the bites of flakey fish, every plate was perfect. I cannot stress enough how enjoyable this restaurant experience is. It's classically elegant without being stuffy. The waitstaff balances being both attentive and casually relatable. Came here on a Sunday after running the Route 66 Marathon. It has a great speak easy environment and super chill ambiance that promotes conversation. I ordered the breakfast tacos while my wife had the omelette while our friends had waffles and a rueben. . Flavors abound in every dish! The breakfast tacos where filling and perfectly balanced between the eggs and chorizo, probably one of the better tacos I have had in some time. Purple potatoes paired nicely and added good color to the plate. The rueben was great and the jalapeño was a pleasant addition to the sauerkraut without over powering the other flavors. The omelette followed this trend, flavorful and cooked to perfection. Will definitely return next time I'm in Tulsa. read more

I've stayed at the Ambassador Hotel, where the Chalkboard Restaurant is, for 3 nights. During my last night I brought a group of 14 friends from Zimbabwe for dinner and one of the waiters mistreated, disrespected and was very rude to one of my guests while she was trying to ask questions about the menu, before placing her order. The incident was witnessed by my wife, my daughter and 2 other friends. I tried to explain the issue to the owner in an attempt to help him address the issue but I do not think he took my constructive feedback seriously so I will not return and will not recommend this place to anyone looking for a good dinning experience. read more

Only a few new chips on the plate. So that sucked. The ceviche was ok, but not the best I've ever had. Moving on to the main entree. I got the roasted chicken with a million corn sides. Lol I like corn so I didn't mind. The chicken was really good. Nicely seasoned. The corn purée was a bit cold but good. The cornbread was the worst thing I've ever had. I had been looking forward to visiting The Chalkboard for awhile. I was so disappointed by the food and the service received. My friends and I went for a girl's night out. Every single of one of our dishes were cold. One of our dishes was burned and cold (not sure how they managed that!). Service was slow, and the waiter was really inattentive. When we told him about our meals being cold, he questioned us. It took asking to speak to a manager to get any kind of service. I would recommend checking out another spot for a fine dining experience, especially for the price point. Recommendations are Juniper and Oren :) read more

First time here and I was really glad I came. I had a house salad with apples and candied pecans, it was very good with the perfect dressing and mixture of greens. The filet was cooked to a perfect medium rare with a great demi-glace. The chocolate samosas were not so great. They tasted like a greasy egg roll with chocolate filling. Over the years never had a bad meal. Always expected to pay a bit more but the food was worth it up till last night. First up was the cheese plate mostly okay except the roasted garlic. The chutney was also a bit off putting. One thing that should come easy to a restaurant is to cook a steak. I ordered the 12 oz rib eye and was not sure what they brought me. First up it was not med rare. Second the protein did not resemble a rib eye or strip steak. For reasons unknown the meat had been sliced up prior to resting. Why present a steak pre sliced anyway? However any chef knows you don't slice meat before it rests. It resembled and tasted more like old rib roast, very tough and chewy. I have been going to that restaurant since the early 80s. Last night was my last supper there. I sent the steak back, they asked me if I prefer the filet since it was not sliced. I had no confidence in the cook. The prices at lunch fine are actually super reasonable! Everything was fresh and had a great flavor. The service was friendly and the place is very clean and cozy. I am leaving a review because the service here has declined steadily for months, particularly at lunchtime. Yesterday, I flat out felt unwelcome. I was having a business lunch and asked to be seated somewhere more discreet as not to have conversations overheard. The server acted completely out out by the request and put us in a high traffic area between two very loud parties to avoid the lower room. Usually, my people come here for brunch on Sundays - which is top notch - you can't go wrong. But we missed a Sunday and so, we had the urge and came for dinner. O.M.Duck!!! They have a new chef and a new menu and it's workin! The duck is incredible - not underdone and not greasy. They have a beet salad - if you're into beets, it's perfect. I am writing this review on behalf of myself, my husband, and the other couple in our Thanksgiving dinner party. Each one insisted it should be said... On a positive note, when I made the reservations I was informed the cost for each person would be $45.00, and even though the actual menu price, confirmed by the waitress waiting on our table, was $60 for a two-course meal; $75 for a three-course meal, when we got our final tab, we were only charged $45 per person...not complaining, really, but puzzled as to why the waitress insisted otherwise?? Anyway, on with the review...the husband of the other couple, ordered a "Starter," shrimp cocktail. The "cocktail sauce" was like none other any of us had ever tasted! Unfortunately, it was very bitter, and so hot it was burning to our entire mouths. He asked the waitress for an ordinary shrimp cocktail sauce, and she said the "chef" would have to make it, which he/she did, but it was obvious it was quickly thrown together with ketchup and maybe a wee bit of horseradish???; not sure, but it did not taste like cocktail sauce either, but was at least edible. My husband ordered turkey, which came with some kind of unknown dressing, mashed potatoes that tasted as if they were from a box, and a weird mix of vegetables. I ordered baked halibut, mixed vegetables, and potatoes. The other couple ordered prime rib, and halibut. The "mixed vegetables" consisted of romaine lettuce, and three tiny, fingerling potatoes..actually, only one and one half fingerling potatoes since they were cut in half...we each had three halves. the prime rib roast was mediocre, but okay; the turkey was tasteless, the halibut was probably the best choice, but all of the meals were barely warm, and all had extremely small, EXTREMELY SMALL, portions of vegetables. The size of each plate was a small oblong plate, that would likely be used for an appetizer at other restaurants. Bread was not served before, or with the meal. The desserts we chose were the pecan pie, and bread pudding. The pecan pie was not much more than a sliver, and was obviously purchased elsewhere; definitely not made in-house (surely, they would never admit it even if it were true???) The bread pudding with a "scoop" of ice cream, was the largest, but tasteless dessert. I left approximately half of it on my plate...no one else wanted it either. The table next to us had dessert before we did, and they were also disgusted with the small sliver, and store bought pecan pie. When they brought the tabs (two separate tabs), they had already included a 20% tip, "gratuity," which was definitely off-putting, but not surprising since we were sure they didn't want the wait-staff punished for such a disgusting excuse for a Thanksgiving holiday meal. Again, the charge for each of us was $45 plus the additional 20% gratuity; NOT the $60-$75 per person stated on the menu, which made us wonder if they were trying to compensate for the poor quality of the food??? One more thing: The waitress had bright silver "hardware" hanging out of her nose, which did not help our appetites....WHY would any "upscale" restaurant allow their wait-staff to wait on their paying dinner guests with ANYTHING hanging out of their nose??? The ambiance was nice, but we seriously doubt this restaurant will make it, even with some of the glowing reviews, unless we simply had a unique experience. It was the first time we had eaten there in several years, but we were hopeful it would be a new favorite for future dinners downtown since we, and the other couple, love to try new restaurants on a weekly basis. Surely, SURELY, The Chalkboard can do better than this!!! read more

We arrived at the Ambassador Hotel around 6:30pm on a Friday night. Decided to try the Chalkboard for dinner knowing we had no reservation and it would be busy. We sat at the bar and had a couple drinks plus the Hummus Board while we waited. Bar staff and the Hummus were excellent. After 30-40 minutes we were seated at a table. Waited at least 10 minutes with no service. My wife finally got up and asked the hostess for help. The bartender actually came to the table for our drink and appetizer orders. We were then being completely ignored by the servers in our area. Finally, we had to tell a server we were ready to order our dinner. Server never explained the menu to us. We enjoyed the Burrata Caprese and my wife liked the Eggplant Lasagna. I had the Seared Halibut which was extremely dry. I would have returned it but at this point we were so disgusted we just wanted to get out of there. read more

ProTip: Try not to inhale the bread and butter (you'll be so tempted) beforehand. Brunch: When I came for the restaurant week 2015 3 course bundle of happiness we sat on the porch. My favorite dish was the hashbrowns with brisket entree. It was cooked perfectly - the hasbrowns just the right amount of crisp and the meat oh-so-tender! A drool-worthy experience. Even through I didn't indulge in the giant mimosa canter then, I saw other tables with the enormous carafe and thought of all of the excuses I can make to come back for one soon. We had a wonderful experience at Chalkboard while in town for work. As it was a quiet Monday evening, we had a large table to ourselves in the back room, which felt even more secluded than the restaurant itself. We started with salads, which were perfect. A pro tip from our server regarding the field greens salad suggested we order dressing on the side; I'm glad she told us because I used a fraction of what they provided. The salad was large and perfect to split, which they did in the kitchen. A few enjoyed cocktails or a glass of wine, and the selection was great. For dinner, I opted for the bone-in breast of chicken. It was flavorful and delicious, served with the skin on and heavily seasoned. The chicken was actually a touch salty. For someone else, it may have been too salty, for me it was perfectly fine because I like certain things, chicken being one of them, very salty. The garlic mashed potatoes were delicious and the rainbow carrots were very good. I could have eaten several more carrots and would perhaps liked to have seen a few more on the plate. Do not, under any circumstances, pass up the bread plate. Even if you're on a low carb kick or even if you don't normally do bread. Both the bread and the butter are outstanding. When in Tulsa, make a reservation, bring a good friend, allow plenty of time and enjoy a truly wonderful meal. read more

My husband and I were staying at the Ambassador Hotel over the weekend and wanted to make it easy for dinner when we got there, so we opted to dine at their in-house restaurant, The Chalkboard. It was about 7:30/8 when we arrived and it was verrrrry slow - we were their 3rd table. I'm not sure if that is normal on a Friday night, but it was definitely unexpected. However, we received some very attentive service which we appreciated very much. As for the food, here's what we had: APPETIZER: We got two - the Crab Cakes and the Hummus. Both were great, but the hummus was spectacular. It's house made and so so good and ultra creamy. Served with warm pita and slices of carrot, celery and red bell pepper. Great dish to start off the meal. ENTREE: I had a hard time deciding, but ended up with the Beef Short Rib. It was nice and tender. Sitting on top of a very delicious rosemary polenta, which might've been the best polenta I've ever had. Really lovely flavor. Hubby got the lamb chops special. They are generally served medium rare, but these came out very rare so we had to send them back. Our server was very calm and apologetic about it and offered to pay for dessert as compensation. Handled like a pro. We did get a side of Burgundy Mushrooms, which sounds yummier than they were, which were actually rather average. The wild mushroom medley on my husbands plate tasted better than the side of mushrooms - so I recommend they start serving these instead. DESSERT: There was a chocolate torte in a handmade pie crust, which was delicious! We also got the bread pudding with white and dark chocolate. Heavenly! Then we decided to eat them both together in the same bite, and it was divine. An explosion of chocolate, creamy and cool, yet warm at the same time. Also wanted to mention I had a Basil Daiquiri cocktail, and it had the perfect amount of basil flavor. Really nice! Then for dessert we split a sweet cocktail - can't remember the name, but it had pistachio liqueur plus white and dark Godiva chocolate.. Yum! Overall, a nice job at The Chalkboard. I hope this is short. I just don't want to think about it. Mother's Day Brunch Daughter made reservations weeks in advance. Sometimes she's absentminded. She didn't know it was a buffet & really didn't care. She just recalled we'd had brunch there before and enjoyed it. We arrived nearly (early) on the dot as usual. The hostess, who said she's been there ten years, was nice. After 15-20 minutes of getting out of the way as we were in that small entrance/exit, they asked if we'd like to wait further in the bar. Yea, this was ridiculous. According to the hostess there were two tables they were hoping would leave so we could have one. (BTW this was totally bogus, I always watch who comes in when & how seating is going) For a while we were understanding & patient. But, had they just taken in anyone who walked in? For the $$$? Once @ a bar four top the bartender came over and offered us a drink. I thought, "All right. They're going to do the right thing and comp us a drink!" NO. Once we ordered 2-3 mimosas, he offered us a "pitcher" he said (actually a carafe) for $15. Well, there was the answer. Not even an "oh, we're sorry for your extreme inconvenience on a special day" comp. 15-20 minutes & a carafe of mimosas later, three guests who entered after us, disappeared from the bar. 5-10 minutes after that, the table by us in the bar was seated (4 adults + 1 child, I think). WTH? Had no idea they'd been stuck in the bar too. (But maybe they didn't have reservations!) Then the three came back. They'd given up and were seating themselves in the bar! I understood. I didn't want to give up our bar table for the unknown of the overbooked, overrun abyss, full of underdressed bubbas with precarious plates piled high. But about 55-60 minutes after our reservation time, I was outvoted even tho it was "mothers' day". Soooo, we sat at a four top facing (me) the KITCHEN, crappy screen doing nothing, with one person in a cramped corner w/ no way out unless I moved, on the route between kitchen & buffet. Thanks. Order more mimosas please. The food was abominable. Absolutely no flavor what so ever. Name a dish: flavorless across the board. Not even the common prime rib. No. The "carving board" was pork loin & beef short ribs. I can't describe the one sauce. The shrimp was fine (rather small, hubby said), the crab knuckles a bit watery. Heard a couple people say they liked the bacon. Whoop, whoop! Can you imagine Caesar Dressing w/ NO flavor? The buffet was in the hotel lobby, seating in the restaurant rooms we know & hubby said people were on the elevator w/ food so there must have been yet another area. Small, yes. So of course there was no omelette or waffle station. But, you know, if there'd just been tasty little bites, I'd have been thrilled. We all would have. Quality over quantity. The desserts were the pre made type: little crusts filled w/ lemon, chocolate shells filled, little square crusts w/ something we couldn't quite figure out. A pseudo cheesecake? And BURNED cookies! YEA! Daughter actually saw an employee trying to retrieve the despicable morsels. They must have heard someone, maybe us, going, "Oh look, burnt cookies!" I've been to "special day" buffets from Southern Hills, all the big hotels, 624, F & M's private dining (in the day), Summit Club, etc. Buffets are inevitably flawed. I met a business connection in the industry from Tulsa here for a drink recently after he recommended it as an option. Of course I checked Yelp and immediately chose Chalkboard after reading the reviews and pics. Once again, my fellow Yelpers didn't let me down. I arrived before him and sat at the bar. The bartender was super friendly and greeted me with a great attitude. I ordered an old fashioned and asked if he did egg whites. He didn't bat an eyelash. My drink was perfect. A "bourbon latte" as I call it. After a great conversation about the oil and gas industry with the new contact, he had to head to a dinner commitment with his wife. I stuck behind and asked for a menu. I had the mussels as the starter and fish of the day. It was an orange roughy simply seared and serves with greens and roasted potatoes. Both were excellent and perfectly cooked with tons of flavor profiles. I strongly recommend this place for cocktails and dinner. I will be back the next time I'm in Tulsa. Well done. read more

The chalkboard is very quaint, intimate and cozy. I stayed at the ambassador hotel for a bachelorette weekend and the restaurant was a major plus. The hotel itself is full of character all while being modern. We ordered something off of the dinner menu - only to find out their was a secret menu! Well it wasn't secret - it was the bar menu. That is where they hid delicious delectables that included but weren't limited to- cheeseburgers and Mac n cheese!!! Which were amazing. The chef there also just decided to make us an appetizer on the house to try- which was the tuna tar tar. He was very nice and said he had been experimenting and wanted to test his results. Great happy hour specials on apps and drinks in the bar. They have the best pretzel in town served with Seikel's mustard and beer cheese. It's a must try. This is a review based solely on their breakfast. My wife and I ate breakfast here since we were staying at the Ambassador. I ordered the chalkboard skillet which was hashbrowns, tomatoes, onions, and peppers with scrambled eggs and cheese on top. It also came with bacon. The hashbrowns were incredibly oily and too soggy and soft for my liking. There wasn't much flavor in the dish, even with the eggs and cheese over top. The eggs were cooked decently, but a little bland. The bacon was solid, though - nice flavor and good texture with the right amount of crunch and chewiness. The bacon was what redeemed this dish (and bumped it up to 2 stars instead of 1) in my mind. My wife ordered the yogurt parfait, which included home made granola and fruit. It was mostly granola, and the granola was just ok. It was lacking in crunch, but had decent flavor. She was underwhelmed. I also tried the pecan pancakes - I was unimpressed by the lack of pecans, and the pancakes weren't anything special. The coffee wasn't that great either. Tasted a bit watered down. The service was lacking, especially for a "nicer" restaurant like this one. We walked in and no one really took noticed us. We had to seat ourselves, and still no one noticed us until a good 5 minutes passed. It wasn't like there were many other people there, either. Good breakfast, strong mimosas, but overpriced! $7 for one mimosa? I live in Dallas, and that's WAY higher than mimosas there. I've also had good mimosas on 15th Street in Tulsa for less than $7. Breakfast will run you $10-12 a person, so not bad, and parking is ample with a free lot next door. I would go back again if a friend wanted to go, but it wouldn't be my first option since it gets a little expensive when you want to drink 3-4 mimosas! They are served in slim champagne flutes too, not big glasses like some other places. read more

I hadn't been to The Chalkboard in years and thought it would be great to see how it had held up, unfortunately I'm sad to say it was disappointing. The service was okay but the food was not good. We had the cheese board which was very underwhelming. For our entrees we had the filet with mixed veggies and mashed potatoes. The best part was the mashed potatoes. Seriously the steak was very overdone, the mixed veggies were hard and undercooked. My husband had the short rib and it was okay at best. We were out with another couple so we thought we would try dessert to see if maybe there was a redeeming for the food and continue to enjoy the company sadly we tried the bread pudding it was the best thing but still not worth the money. In the end we spent $200 and it was truly the worst food we've had out in a long time. I hate writing this as I love supporting the local restaurants but this is a lot to pay for food as bad as we received. Lastly, the ambiance was also odd at times. The music accidentally got hit up which was strange but a lady came out a few minutes later and shouted sorry to everyone which made it more akward. read more
