My husband and I have been on one date night since my birthday...which was last August. So, in an effort to spend a couple hours together, he made a belated Valentine's Day reservation at The Chalkboard for a Friday night. Yay, Husband! We arrived right at 18:00, the time of our reservation, and there were three people at the bar and two tables occupied. No reservation needed after all, which was a tad surprising. Since I'm pregnant and could not partake of the wine (le sigh), no drinks for me. The menu was small, as it should be, and each dish sounded excellent. We started off with the hummus and the crab cakes. The hummus was good, but when you're married to an Arab man and you make your own hummus, you can be kind of snobbish about it. I gave it a solid 7 as it could have used more lemon. The crab cakes were divine and not overly breaded as some can be. We ended up splitting the bone-in pork chop ($4 dollar fee to split an entree) and it was so, so good. I'm vegan but my pregnancy is making me want all the meat so I happily oblige and go with it. I cannot tell you the last time I had pork. Maybe ten years ago? This chop was so juicy and full of flavor. My half was very fatty though so perhaps inquire about the cut before ordering. Splurging, we ordered the salted caramel creme brûlée. I would have much preferred the traditional version as this one was a tad too sweet and almost too rich to eat. Overall, service was not rushed and the food was great. I'd love to try brunch here as this dinner put me in the mood for more of what The Chalkboard has to offer. read more

Disappointing. You can tell that maybe this place used to be better once upon a time. But now, the food is sorely lacking. Maybe it is inconsistent, since from the other reviews, it looks like some people had an maxing experience, while others walked away to never return. Either way, inconsistency is bad for business. I gave it two tries, dinner and brunch, and they missed the mark both times. For dinner, we got the beef Wellington and the duck. Beef Wellington was disgusting, the pastry is supposed to be flaky, enveloping the meat. Nope. It was soggy and gross. The meat itself was supposed to be medium rare. It was more like well done. The duck was slightly better, but not by much. The experience just made our nice dinner extremely disappointing. The tab was not cheap, and considering how much we paid, we expected better. Go somewhere else and don't waste your money on a nice dinner here. So I thought, you know what, let's try again. Let's do brunch with some girlfriends since they wanted to try it. Brunch was overpriced for what we got. I really got something simple, eggs and bacon and potato. Tasted like something I could have paid a third of the price for the same quality. The other girls were not happy either. Needless to say, none of us has come back since. Just go to savor for brunch (more casual), or Roosevelt's, bramble or smoke. read more

This was my first experience at the Chalkboard. The ambience and start of our dinner was going good, good cocktails and appetizers, but then all of a sudden our waiter ghosted our table for well over an hour! We waited for our main course over an hour and a half. I think the only reason we didn't wait any longer is because we approached the manager ourselves because our waiter was clearly avoiding our table at all cost. It was really strange. There were people around us who came way after who already had their meals, so Im not sure what happened. All it takes is some communication. We never knew what happened, did the waiter forget to put our order in, was the ticket lost? No one knows. Then we told manager we didn't want our waiter back at our table to compete our meal. She obviously failed to tell him and he magically reappears after our food arrives as if nothing had happened. It was truly the strangest experience. They did comp us a round a drinks and appetizers. But our food was terrible. My husbands porkchops were overcooked, my entree and my friends were lukewarm. 10 STARS!! I would give more stars for The Chalkboard if I could! We celebrated my parent's Surprise 45th Anniversary in the Tuscany Room back in February. I must point out that I planned this entire event from out of state and had no issues with communication or experience being thousands of miles away. My sister and I enjoyed our experience from beginning to end. Josh was so easy to work with and put up with all of my emails regarding details and questions about my parent's Surprise Event. His staff was very accommodating and attentive to all of our guests. We started the event with Cocktail Hour in the Lobby / Lounge area of the Ambassador Hotel and then moved into the Tuscany Room for the actual Reception. The food was fantastic and we loved that our guests could choose from several different entree options! Everyone raved about the food and the presentation. I enjoyed the beef short ribs, my personal favorite. We truly appreciate The Chalkboard staff and highly recommend for your next event! I've been here twice for lunch in the last few weeks and enjoy the food. The first time I went I had the burger which was extremely good and easily one of the best I have had in Tulsa. The second time which was last week I talked them into making me a Beef Wellington for lunch because I had always wanted to try one. The steak inside the wellington was very good. I always order my steak rare so when I cut into it the batter/breading of the wellington got soggy right away. This is probably just the nature of beef wellingtons in general though since it normally is served with a sauce on it. I think I was expecting it to be a high quality steak with a crispy fried batter on it. Once again the actual steak itself was cooked perfectly so I have no complaints in that regard. I will definitely go back and will probably get the burger again for lunch. read more

My boyfriend and I went here tonight for a drug rep dinner. It is a very nice atmosphere. I haven't been here in years and had never been to the upstairs room for groups. Not as nice of an atmosphere as the main dining room but still lovely. My boyfriend ordered the spare ribs and I ordered the chicken. We were there for a medical educational program and they didn't serve the salads in till probably 45 minutes after we had gotten there. They didn't even serve dinner until after the entire program was over and it was 8 o'clock. They had to send dessert home with us in containers because of that point it was almost 9. We only had one waiter for about 20 of us and we didn't see much of him for a large stretches. The chicken was excellent and I would definitely order it if I went back again. It came with roasted cauliflower which I'm not a fan of so I didn't eat any. I would definitely go here again and I can't complain much since it was a free dinner. read more

Had the beef wellington and found it cooked EXACTLY the way I ordered it (which isn't easy if you have ever tried to cook one). Instantly became a top restaurant for me in Tulsa and where I plan to bring future visitors who want a taste of what Kanye would call the Good Life. I had the petit filet for my the main course and it was without question the best steak I've had in town. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection, and each bite was tender and juicy. This place is a must in our Tulsa rotation. Located in the bottom of The Ambassador, it is a smallish darkly lit but comfy space. We have a go-to wait person named Eric(sp?) that ranks up there with the top 3 we have ever had. Because of that we request him ahead of time every visit. We usually start with a cheese board which is always delicious. (We almost never get it as served bc we don't like blue cheese but they always accommodate requests to change or substitute). I have had a few different iterations on their short ribs which are always amazing...literally perfectly cooked every time so far. As of my latest visit they changed the sides and I have to admit the "potato salad" was not very good. It was rather flavorless and just odd. They have plenty of other great sides and even potatoes so try those instead. read more

I love this restaurant and because of that we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner here at their buffet. This review is strictly based upon my experience today. Wow... Extremely disappointed. The food was not up to par and very low quality. I understand that it is hard to cook for a lot of different tastes, especially buffet style. However, the quality and preparation of the thanksgiving feast here was horrible. The food was bland and really just appeared to be of low quality. I am wondering if the deserts were even made in house as the cheesecake bites looked and tasted exactly like the ones at Sam's club. Very disappointed with the food. This is one of the only restaurants within walking distance of my office. I went there once before and loved the ambiance and the stuffed portabella mushroom was delicious. I had a much different experience this time around. They recently redecorated and it still looks fantastic and the atmosphere is cozy and chic. The server, while somewhat attentive, seemed a little scatter-brained and rushed (however since it was around lunch time on a week day I won't fault him for that). I ordered the stuffed portabella again since I had been craving it. I was severely disappointed. My conclusion was that they must have changed chefs because this was not the same dish I had back in November. The mushroom was practically raw (not baked as it was the previous time) and had a pile of very bland black beans and corn on top. The butter they serve with the bread is delicious, and I ended up eating more bread than my meal. When it came time for dessert we asked for a menu (which they don't have). The server came back and recited the options and I decided to go with the plain new york style cheesecake. I was slightly disappointed with that too. The cheesecake itself was decent but the crust was soggy. Overall I think I'll reserve this place for an occasional happy hour drink since I still love the atmosphere. read more

My husband and I stayed at The Ambassador Hotel, which houses The Chalkboard, for our first wedding anniversary. Our experience at The Chalkboard was probably the worst we've ever had at any restaurant. We are young but accustomed to fine dining and had anticipated eating at The Chalkboard for a long time. We entered The Chalkboard and stood at the entrance of the restaurant for almost five minutes without being greeted. After deciding there was no sign of a host, we seated ourselves. The restaurant was not busy, as it was breakfast time. Three or four waiters passed us over a span of 15 minutes without even greeting us. Finally we decided to leave. While The Chalkboard may have an excellent menu, the service (from our experience at least) is bottom of the barrel. read more

I'll be back! Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Started off with the mussels and the caprese; the mussels were well prepared and the caprese came with a fantastic, smokey balsamic. My entree was the Beef Wellington. I was originally going to get something else until I saw a gentleman who had ordered the Wellington, and his facial expression at his first bite told me I needed to try it. He did not mislead me. Cocktails were good as well, and the waiter was attentive, knowledgable, and friendly. My beautiful date had the diver scallops and curry risotto and she throughly enjoyed it. Finished the night with my favorite, a [Grand Marnier] creme brûlée and a cappuccino, and requested to move to the patio for dessert. My husband and I visited this restaurant on one of our 1st dates, Bout 8 years ago and have always wanted to go back. When you walk in it has that dim lit 5 star dining experience ambiance. White linens and upscale dinnerware. One of my favorite things that I observed was the chef doing a tasting for the nightly specials with the front of the house staff. We had a driver early so he was explaining the specials and they were able to taste these plates first hand. To me that was like YES, coming from my culinary background this was a nice surprise!! One of the top meals I've had in Tulsa. The food was excellent and the ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. Service was great as well. The house olive bread and herb butter is amazing. I think I hate an entire loaf. The Chalkboard House salad was really a great combination of flavors. I liked how the berry vinaigrette wasn't too sweet like many fruity vinaigrette. For our entrees, I had the Colorado Lamb Chops and my wife had the Beef Wellington. Both were outstanding with tons of flavor and cooked to perfection. For desert, we had the bread pudding and chocolate lava cake. They were both very good, but not on the same level as the entrees. To respond to a previous poster, it's not overpriced either. It's very reasonably priced for a restaurant of this caliber. Apps $8-12, salads around $8, and entrees $25-35. Portions are nicely sized...you should be pleasantly full but not miserable after a salad, entree, and desert. read more

It was overpriced though for three courses and a glass of sparkling wine for $73-85. Service was attentive but there was a mix up once on an order of wine that was easily fixed. I had the Scallop boil two weeks ago and the 'Market Price' was about $40. They don't actually tell you the price, so I thought it was overpriced, but a pretty good entree, nonetheless. Fast forward to tonight. Back in town and I order the same dish (same quantity of scallops, mussels, and shrimp that I remember). When my check came, it was $70 for the entree!!!! You would think that an entree almost doubling in cost would be mentioned. Nope. No notice at all. I asked the server if it was right. She got the manager (owner, maybe?) and he offered '$5 or $10 to make me feel better' and then lectured me on what market price meant. Ridiculous. Bottom line? Good food. Pretentious management. Located in the basement of the Ambassador hotel, this place is like a little slice of European food. The father and I ordered a plate of hummus with fresh pita bread and carrots, and assorted cheeses with a variety of sides. The hummus was fresh and topped with olive oil and spices, the pita bread was warm, and the carrots were crisp. The various cheeses came with grained toast, prosciutto, walnuts, berries, and some garlic and olive oil black olives. It was so delicious. Dad had an Italian Pilsner beer that he said was good. We ordered off the small plates menu, since the larger plates were more expensive at about $20-$40. read more

The bartender obviously took pride in his drinks and was very attentive the whole time I was there. I then had the Romaine wedge salad which was the perfect starter. I hate salads that are soaked in dressing. This was not that salad. It was light and flavorful. I then ordered the pork chop as recommended by the bartender with a nice glass of Pinot Noir. The duck tasted like boiled chicken with no seasoning and the charcuterie board was the most basic of them all. As a person from Portland looking for a DT place in Tulsa I trusted the reviews. The food at the Chalkboard is superb but the wine list sucks and the service is equally as impressive. Nice server but I ordered a $75 bottle of 2009 deep red wine and they served it in a Riesling glass. I asked for a larger mouthed glass and was told they only had two and they were in use. Hmmmmm. After visiting for a few days go to the Brady District instead. Hope the Chalkboard wakes up because their current chef is excellent. read more

The only thing that is bringing my rating to a three is their fabulous bartender Marisa and I'm probably spelling that wrong but she worked Christmas night. Other than that, I was extremely disappointed in their food considering they have a 4 star yelp rating. My shrimp bisque was ok but too thick and luke warm. I ordered the carpaccio which was a grave disappointment as the portion of the beef was almost nonexistent but they did try to build it up with way over the top Parmesan things, cracked black pepper and micro-greens. I left more on my plate than I ate. My friends ordered the pretzel and fried mushrooms. The pretzel was as you would expect in a bar and grill but nothing significant. The well touted beer cheese was thin and tasteless and their fried mushrooms did not match the menu description. Thank you for being open on Christmas and I'm sure that's why you were so packed but I can't see any reason to return on a regular night if this was common fare. Our dining experience was so exceptional, we went back the following night. We were attended by the same server, Erich, who is a true professional. What a treat to find The Chalkboard as we were driving through Tulsa. We had an excellent, socially-distanced meal. The cheese board to start was mouth watering and beautifully put together. Our waiter Kevin offered up just the right suggestions and was very attentive. Entrees (duck and chicken) were very good, as was the wine list. Overall I was underwhelmed. It was crowded and seating took longer than our reservation but we were given options and chose to wait a bit longer for a better table. There was about a 5 minute delay from some dinner plates arriving at the table. We had good flavors on the plate but the beef Wellington was different temperatures when 4 people ordered medium. They didn't seem properly rested before cutting and the Demi had been setting long enough to make the dough soggy. There was some delay with getting checks. read more

My girlfriend and I chose this place for Valentine's Day. The menu is limited but that tells me there is very little frozen pre-made junk. The staff was excellent, we met the manager within minutes of being seated, and there was complimentary teasers and champagne before our appetizers came. The atmosphere was dark and candle lit which complimented my girlfriend nicely. The food is expensive and focuses on delicate pure flavors not drowned in heavy spices and sauces. I had the 6oz filet steak med rare. I'm Cajun so this showed me a different side of food, a subtle beauty. 4.5 stars! This place has AMAZING food. We sat downstairs in their converted cellar (?), the atmosphere wasn't great but boy that was the only thing I would change! We had the crab cakes, steak tenderloin flatbread (maybe the best I have ever had), Atlantic salmon and beef Wellington. Every bite was tremendous. For dessert we had a lemon curd platter and the white chocolate mousse ice cream. I've eaten at quite a few fine dining restaurants and this is right up there with the best. This restaurant wouldn't look out of place in any major city and is a credit to Tulsa. Sure it's a little expensive but it is truly superb. read more
